/sqt/ because old one is almost kill

You know the drill:
-post your small tech support questions HERE, don't create a thread for them
-don't just bump the thread, most people look for posts without replies
-take at least 10 seconds checking your problem with a search engine

I have a desktop I use for muh games. And I have thought about dual booting.

I was wondering, though, with how deep Windows 10 is in everything that goes on with the operating system, would it even make a difference? There will be some record of what you have done on your hard drive when Windows 10 loads back up.

This is partly theoretical, but I am seriously paranoid about this.

Aside from that, I haven't really been into muh games recently, so I thought about just wiping Windows 10 off entirely and going full Linux. I actually tried this right when I build the machine, but I kept running into compatibility errors with the graphics card.

So i guess 1) why dualboot if its all the same shit and 2) how do I fix graphics card compatibility errors in Linux.

I installed Ubuntu (LXDE) on my desktop and compared to windows my cursor moves very slow and trails really far behind, like using stabilization in an art program or something. Turned off acceleration and it's still just as bad. My specific mouse is recognized by it, too. Is there a fix? I'm only finding fixes for it refusing to move at all for a second, not being constantly lagging.

What is the best all around laptop between the prices of $800 and $1000? I already have a desktop, but I want a laptop too. I was eyeing this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-natural-silver/5617100.p?skuId=5617100

I looked at it in the store, however, and noticed the screen has this very blatant criss-cross pattern all over it, which was an instant turn off no matter what's inside. Size is not the biggest concern, but 15.6" or bigger is preferred.

I found an old HP m7067c in my garage, and I know it has a composite/s-video/rf capture card on the back and on the front like pic related (which may not be the exact same HP, but the case/layout look the same).

Does anyone know what the capture card(s) in this system are specifically? Can I take them out and put them in a new desktop provided the motherboard has a slot for them?

I believe the capture card may either be a Hauppauge or Asus.

2 SQs:

1. I'm planning to write a small script (probably in python) to check for tv series epsidode updates.
Is there a better way to check than to grab data from sites that already do this same thing?
I don't know a better way to find out when episodes get released

2. Are VMs perfectly safe in terms of isolation from the main partition?
As in you could screw around and mess up the VM with as many dodgy things as you want and it would never manage to leak out?
>>
>>60787696
you could just take one that isn't, extract it's squashfs file, chroot into it, and uninstall stuff you don't need on it and generate a new squashfs/iso to bring it under 700MB

1: have you looked at sonarr?
2: that's the intention, though vm-escaping malware is a thing that has happened, you could consider sandboxing the vm software with another tool for an additional layer of protection, such as with firejail. unless you're deliberately fucking with malware in it though, you'd have to be pretty unlucky for anything to happen
>>
>>60787940
sonarr is basically what I want, but I just wanted to make a personal super lite version rather than sign up for a site or have to install an external program

my question is basically where do services like sonarr get their data from on new episodes?
i'd rather cut out the middle man than take it from someone who is already taking it from someone else

sonarr is a standalone program which pulls it's information from public databases such as the thetvdb.com
you'd probably want to do the same thing in your own program
at the very least you can use sonarr's sources to help you make your own

Can I boot without an IGPU?

Was just running my R5 1600 with GTX 1070 when the computer froze and the speaker emitted a horrible screech before the video failed entirely. Been working fine for about a month. Trying to see if my GPU died, but I can't even get a display when the monitor is plugged directly into mobo, probably because no IGPU? Everything else works fine, can even log into windows (I hear the login sound, but no display).

If you didn't change any hardware the windows should automatically activate online (click skip key during install), provided it was successfully activated on upgrade from 7 to 10.

If not try to use win 7 key.

>Well seeing the R5 1600 has no iGPU, how would you even check?

That's exactly my problem. I can't get any display. Mouse/keyboard work fine, fans are spinning, can login to Windows I just can't get a display. Monitor works fine with other devices. So with no IGPU I get no signal at all even plugged into the board. I'm guessing my 1070 died.

What should I prepare for before studying I.T. (Information Technology) I'm fresh out of highschool.

Is the course math heavy?
What language should I prioritize studying on my free time?
Any habits to avoid? or sometype of beginner's mistake to avoid.
>>
>>60789825
step 1: do a full backup of everything from in TWRP before you go further (than installing TWRP). this is your fallback if you end up wanting to go back to how it is now
step 2: use something like oandbackup (foss, f-droid) or titaniumbackup (paid) to do an app-level backup, which can be restored individually on other roms
step 3: install the new rom, don't format internal or external storage, that's where things like pictures/videos/whatever is and shoudn't need to be messed with when changing rom
step 4: restore what you want from your app backups

some settings will need to be done manually, due to differences between roms, and anything that modifies the system (usually root apps) will need to be done again, as system edits are done in the space that was replaced with the new rom (for example, installing busybox, applying adaway...)

once everything's back to how you want it, consider a new backup, so you can always come back to it
>>
>>60789900
>>60789825
also worth noting that in some cases you can keep your /data, meaning no app backup/restore needed, but you should only expect that to work if it says it does
for example, updating lineage to a new version of lineage is seamless, needing only system edits to be done again
>>
>>60789900
Thanks
>>
>>60789900
>>60789940
oh, and to give a quick explanation of the storage locations i mentioned;
/system: this is the rom contents, typically read-only, needs root to edit it
/data: the editable part of the system, apps, their settings and system settings are stored here. typically will need to be formatted when changing to an different, incompatable rom
internal storage/sdcard: self-explanatory, they're their own spaces, and are usually rom-indepedant, though there are things that can make them partially dependant, "moving" apps onto them

>Is the course math heavy?
depends, but for me it was okay in my country.
>What language should I prioritize studying on my free time?
Depends what you're gonna be studying. learning C before going in might teach you the basis, and force you to code algorithms. Some people might argue you should go with C++ or java or even python since it's more high level and teach you OOP.
Different point of views there are pros and cons and you're the only one to take the decision in the end.
>Any habits to avoid? or sometype of beginner's mistake to avoid.
always save your work, always test your code (don't wait to have done a lot of things else you'll have too many things to debug), try everything that comes to your mind, try doing some projects. You'll do mistakes that you'll correct and won't do during your courses + it will teach you'll have more experience in how to structure your program.
Linux is the best OS when having to program
use makefiles, even if you use an IDE, use a custom makefile (very useful when programming with other people).
use git if you have to work with someone on a project
don't skip any course and listen to the teacher. IT is quite easy, just by attending and doing the projects to graduate.
If they don't give you projects to do, do some, using what they teach you.

They'll pay you once and expect free tech support for that device til it explodes.

If they even pay you at all that is.
>bu-bu-but we family why u charge monies?

My advice is when they start asking you about a tech problem start off with the diagnostic fee and just keep listing things off from there.

If they were expecting it for free they'll fuck off or complain. If they're serious about paying you back they'll stay or negotiate.

I charge a few bucks to diagnose, but that's just something I tell people. My price is negotiable. I once fixed a weird boot issue with my neighbor's pc and I got three tupperware containers filled with the world's best gumbo. Another neighbor paid me back with a twelve pack of beer.

It's small stuff like that that builds trust.

If raid10, I could just use 4 of the drives.

I'm using streamlink to play internet streams through VLC. I'd like to add a selection list of hardcoded streams + titles that can be selected easily.

I've looked into .bat arrays but I'm not really getting anywhere.

SET /P variable=[promptString]

streamlink %variable% best --player "I:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"

This is what my current .bat looks like.

Basically I want something that looks like this:

Select an item from the list:
1. Stream 1 (contains the URL)
2. Stream 2 (contains the URL)
3. Enter your own link (prompt like the example)

Any idea how I could make this?

i didn't say 10 because
a, it needs a multiple of 2 drives and
b, it's main advantage is lower cpu and write overhead compared to raid5/6, which nowadays isn't as big of a deal
to explain, partity calculation (needed with 5/6) on modern (even low end) cpus is such a small strain that it won't affect anything else you run, and the write performance loss isn't that big of a deal for home users with modern disks, a 5 disk raid5/6 of common drives will deliver at least a couple hundred megs a second write throughput easy

there's also;
raid6 supports *any two* disk failures, while raid10 supports two specific drive failures (one is safe, but the other is only safe if it happens to be part of the other mirror)
raid5/6 can be upgraded and downgraded one disk at a time, instead of two (relatively minor, but a consideration for small scale uses)
>>
>>60793010
What combined storage do you get with 6 vs 1+0?

And while I have off number of drives, I can just use 4.

I don't need data redudnency. I was gonna do raid0 with just 2 drives, but I'm considering using 4. But not with raid0, and since I don't need redudnency, I don't want to waste money on unusable storage.
>>
>>60793010
>while raid10 supports two specific drive failures (one is safe, but the other is only safe if it happens to be part of the other mirror)
-- for a 4 disk setup, i should say, the number of supported failures scales with each pair of disks you add, but still only one per mirror
>>
>>60793043
>>I don't need data redudnency. I was gonna do raid0 with just 2 drives, but I'm considering using 4. But not with raid0, and since I don't need redudnency, I don't want to waste money on unusable storage.
sounds like you should be leaning towards either raid0 or raid5

raid0 is as you probably already know, 100% storage capacity, and the best performance, with the caveat that if one disk fails, you lose everything, and i mean everything. any file larger than the stripe width (which is typically very small) will be partially on the failed drive, and therefore corrupted
raid5 is with a single, striped parity, it's a bit slower than raid0, but can support any one disk failure, you lose only 1 disk worth of space (not half of all disks like raid10)
>>
>>60793094
>>60793043
>What combined storage do you get with 6 vs 1+0?
and raid6 is double striped parity, you lose 2 disks worth of space in exchange for any 2 failures without loss
>>
>>60793094
>>60793133
Raid5 sounds best.

How much slower is it than raid0 if I use 5 drives, will it be faster than 2 drives in 0?

theoretically, it should read as fast as 4 disks, and write a bit under the speed of 4 disks
look up some benchmarks, or even better, test it on your hardware, the disks are unused right now, and it takes moments to setup mdadm (you can even try it out right from a linux livecd!)

Found a raid calculator, says that raid5 does not benefit from write speed, and going from 4 to 5 hds only gains me some space, and write speed.

Using the 3 hds I have now in raid5 will give me the combined storage of 2 drives which is what I was gonna gain from raid0, but with raid5 there won't be a write speed gain.

Is this accurate?

Ram - 16GB G.Skill 3000 Mhz
Graphic - 6GB GeForce GTX 1060

I think that it depends on the program he uses? You'll also want to check whether the program(s) use CUDA or OpenCL before deciding on the GPU brand.

Contact the seller. Some sellers are merciful and will give you a partial refund, if not a full refund. Others, not so much, especially without the original box.

What I do with electronics is ask the seller for the serial number before shipping so that the seller can't claim that I tried to return a different product of the same model.

That way I can claim to ebay that the seller was in contact with the product and knew that it was physically damaged when it was listed as new.

Isn't here some inexpensive usb 3.0 dongle to which I can connect 2x external HDs, and connect that to my router, and have it treat it as a raid0?
>>
>>60797197
That should be sufficient, yes.
>>
>>60797241
I doubt your router has RAID capabilities
>>
>>60797281
It doesn't, I'm looking for a dongle that does. Router has only 1x USB 3.0 port, I have 2x identical USB 3.0 drives I want to either jbot, or raid1 and turn it into a network drive.

Right now I have just the one hooked up.
>>
>>60797189
Do you have the mobo manual?

Maybe you're using slots in a wrong way.

Also have you tried another software? I remember having a similar bug on Speccy a couple of years ago where it showed an incorrect ram speed.

How does flashing an Android rom work with your settings and apps and stuff? Do you have to redo everything again or do you keep things? Also have the same question with just rooting alone.

Also, what's the best custom rom now that Cyanogenmod is gone? I know there was one being developed called Lineage or something like that but I don't know how it turned out

chance of finding a dongle with RAID are quite slim too, if you have an old laptop or computer, you could configure it as a server with RAID.

would allow you to do more things anyway

How do you decide on a distro?

I don't like KDE and I don't know why. I decided to give it a fair go and it's confirmed, I don't like it.

The thing is fanboys will probably tell me everything I don't like can be fixed or tweaked.

I like Unity on Ubuntu oddly, but I heard its bloated and spyware etc. I have Xubuntu on a netbook and its fine, not very exciting but functional. I've tried Mint. I've tried Debian and Fedora briefly but I'm a Linux noob so I can't tell which I like other seeing that obviously the 'buntus are more noob friendly and pretty out of the box.
>>
>>60797400
Ok!
>>60797402
No.
>>
>>60797406

And when I say which distro I guess I mean which DE since I'll probably go Ubuntu for a first desktop OS.

By KDE I mean Kubuntu which is what I'm on on a spare HDD right now.
>>
>>60797408
I thought stupid questions were welcome here but you blew that straight out of the water.
>>
>>60797406

Today I have a pretty stupid question

I installed RAM on my new build but forgot to do it until everything was in the case already
Instead of taking it all out, I layed down the computer on the side, and tried pushing in the RAM like that
It went quite difficult and I pushed pretty damn hard with much force to get both sides to click at the same time, then I noticed this was impossible, took them out a couple of times, tried the other slots, tried back the first slots again, didnt go well, took out, put in again then I noticed I had to push one side first then the other.
During my pushing the motherboard bent a little but I'm also worried about the RAM

Could it potentially be damaged?
It doesnt seem bent in any way but still, I don't think you're supposed to apply as much pressure as I did

The golden rule for products that are dependent on either community contributions or aftermarket parts: Get what has the most users.

So basically stick with Ubuntu/Gnome and there will always be someone who already had the same problem as you.

>>
>>60797512
How did you decide on the DE though?

>>60797553
Yeah makes sense hence ubuntu until I know what I'm doing.
>>
>>60797589
I heard Ubuntu was shit and full of spyware Debian seemed like the next-level down for an easy to use OS.
I wasn't really interested in the specific unique features of the distro itself, I just wanted an easy one to use that wasn't the centre of shitposting.

Is there any viable reason to get the R5 1500X over the R5 1400 (with the option to upgrade later on) if your GPU is bottlenecking in either case? There shouldn't be a noticeable difference in performance ingame, right?

int i = 2; // There is now an integer variable named i; set it equal to two.
int *k = &i; // There is now a pointer to integer values named k; set it equal to the address of i.
//or
int *k; // There is now a pointer to integer values named k, with a random value.
*k = &i; // Set the integer at the random location held in k to the address of i;

Even if you were on a system where sizeof(int) equaled sizeof(int*), you'd still be hitting a random location and hopefully getting a seg fault.

Wikileaks says some mails have been verified using DKIM

How is this done? Are all DKIMs just publicly accesible?
In a universal server, or on google's?
Can I still verify this or must I take WL's word of it?
If so, why would Google (maybe pressured by the FBI) not delete such incriminating evidence?

For me it is based on a few critera :
>Is it rolling release or not ?
>How is the package manager, can I install things I want easily (that aren't on the official repositories) ? How up to date are the packages ?
>What is the default DE ? Is there a lot of bloat by default ?
> How is the support ? Can I find informations easily ? Is the wiki or the forums good ?
>Does the devs care about privacy ? Do their work by maintaining properly the distribution ?
>If their is a philosophy behind it, is it any good and will it work for me ? (Example, distro that only comes with free software, minimal environnent..)

For the DE it's simple :
>Is it fast ?
>Can it be customized easily ?
>Get the job done ?
>>
>>60798491
sata cables are supposed to be inside the case and not moved/hotplugged so their case is easier than USB cables.

Is a single DDR4 2133 8GB stick superior to two 4GB ones?
>>
>>60797354
That's easy. When you say :
int *
You are declaring a pointer if type int. Si writting
int *par=&i
will store the adress in pvar
Once declared you'll be able to access the adress it point to using pvar

Once declared using *pvar will tell your program to check the value stored at the adress pvar is pointing to si it do not work cause your trying to give it an adress in your case with &i
They used * for two different things. That's a bit stupid but you'll get used too
>>
>>60798011
What should I use instead?

cock.li is very nice, as far as what you're asking even means:
>How can I trust you?
>You can't. Cock.li doesn't parse your E-mail to provide you with targeted ads, nor do I read E-mail contents unless it's for a legal court order. However, it is 100% possible for me to read E-mail, and IMAP/SMTP doesn't provide user-side/client-side encryption, so you're just going to have to take my word for it. Any encryption implementation would still technically allow me to read E-mail, too. This was true for Lavabit as well -- while your E-mail was stored encrypted (only if you were a paid member, which most people forget), E-mail could still technically be intercepted while being received / sent (SMTP), or while being read by your mail client (IMAP). For privacy, I would recommend encrypting your E-mails using PGP using a mail client add-on like Enigmail.

Tor friendly, no phone, etc. There are people in Grorious People Republic ob China using it, so it's probably as safe as it gets.
