This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Yeah, unfortunately at the moment only the black is available in 18mm, 20mm and 22mm. For all the rest of the colors (gray, brown, royal blue and red) only 20mm is available yet.

I'm sure that will change eventually.

So I could spend more on a seiko and I am stuck in this process of trying to decide. I can save money and have a pretty nice watch for 60 bucks... i could spend 120 and get a 4r36 based watch

that's quite a bit bigger than the blue one. and looks very different. there's more to a watch than the movement.

>>60791700
or do i spend 330 on a 6r15 based seiko... I just can't justify the price jumps for some reason. I know the 6r15 is better than the 7s26 but is it 270 dollars better? I feel like at 60 dollars that is an almost unbeatable deal.. really have no idea what to do at this point. Is the sarb nicer in other ways? is it worth it?

>>60791723

yeah that is honestly out of the running at this point. I could get an nh36 somewhere and shoe horn it into the cheaper watch according to a forum i just checked out. No idea how accurate that is?
>>
>>60791754
So from my personal experience and anecdotes from others on and off /wt/ the sarb033 has great finishing for its price point backed by a great movement. The 6R15 has the best inherent accuracy of the listed, more durability (debatable), and the 50 hour power reserve is handier than you'd think. Honestly it's such a solid movement. Again though think past the movement. People buy skx007s like mad and they have 7S26s in them. Because they like the watch and its other purposes (nice diver in that case). If you want the day date function and prefer the aesthetics of the other watches and can give up on movement quality and better finishing then go for your original choices.
>>
>>60791754
A SARB will have quite a lot better build quality and finishing, and its worth the price difference for that plus hacking and hindwinding on the 6r15c, in my opinion.
>>
>>60791754
yes the sarb is nice than a seiko 5. the jump in price just for the movement wouldn't be worth it, but it's worth it for the whole watch.

and you'd need a different stem for the NH36 afaik.

I am glad you got such a good price on it because it normally sells for over 200 usd used. You are clearly trolling saying its 45 usd .. You also linked a 150 dollar leather strap that does not come in the correct size to fit on that watch. I am not sure what you don't understand about that part of the comment. if you are asking whether it would look good on a similar leather strap. i would personally go with something darker and more textured but it actually does look ok on leather.

Delusional in how people don't realize that even chink brands can tell time using their own "chink"/seagull automatic mechanicals accurately and are cheaper then the seiko. We already past the point where a automatic mechanicals of any kind can tell time well. If you really want a watch that keeps time perfectly accurate go get a quartz if you really are into that.

So I have no idea wtf you are talking about when you say an expensive watch cannot tell time accurate as a 60 dollar seiko. Even a Seiko 5 sport loses around 30-60 sec every week. Whatever happen to the unknown European brands that were good like stuhrling or even the luxury ones like Nomos.

>>
>>60794676

No the post is pointing out the absurdity of people talking shit about expensive watches but accepting cheap ones just because they are Seiko's. I agree even Chinese movements are keeping very accurate time. Picking a movement now is more about what you like than function. I mean you pay 6 grand for a Rolex to get a chronometer grade watch but a 60 dollar watch is probably accurate enough for most people.
>>
>>60794763
Yeah I am agreeing with you there that sentiment, but it is absolutely garbage that people think Seiko is "the pinnacle of all pinnacle"> I think I seen that green seiko with the leaf that looks like garbage in every thread that gets made.
>>
>>60794676
>>60794763
Chinkshit is garbage because of the complete lack of QC. Mainland locusts culturally don't believe in quality control or not scamming your customers as much as humanly possible.

Since Seiko actually does QC, they are automatically better than all mainland Chinkshit watches.

Then you obviously have been buying literally shit Chinese brands like Winner and Bagelsport. There are good brands out there like Seagull, Beijing Watch, Longio, and there is just way more popping up that are hidden gems in the Chinese market.

A lady's Rolex is a very good choice as women love Rolex simply for the brand. Cartier is a good choice too.

We don't even need to discuss horology here, just what women actually like which is what you should be doing when shopping for your gf.

I'd just like to interject for moment.

What you're referring to as Omega, is in fact, ETA/Omega, or as I've recently taken to calling it, ETA plus Omega. Omega is not a watch manufacturer unto itself, but rather another Swiss marketing division of a fully functioning watch conglomerate made useful by the ETA movements, Chinese cases and vital dial components comprising a full watch as defined by COSC.

Many watch owners wear a modified version of an ETA movement every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the model of ETA movement which is widely used today is often called Omega, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically an ebauche, developed by the Swatch Group.

There really is an Omega, and these people are wearing it, but it is just a cosmetic part of the watch they wear. Omega is the brand: the advertising agency that determines the names and cosmetic designs of the watches. The design is an essential part of a watch, but useless by itself; it can only function when fitted with a completed movement. Omega is normally manufactured in combination with an ETA movement: the whole watch is basically an ebauche with Chinese parts added, or ETA/Omega. All the so-called Swiss watches are really distributions of ETA movements in Chinese cases!

>>60795209

First of all Omega does not use off the shelf eta's and the movements they do use are of a very high quality they do have an in house engineering department and its not just for their cases. They extensively use their co-axial IN HOUSE 8500 movement in many of their watches. I also cannot find a single source saying any major part of an Omega is made in china besides the bracelet links. Seiko and Citizen also have various components manufactured in China.

I've also seen this wall of text copied and pasted here numerous times and am frankly tired of your shit.

Too bad co-axial is a marketing driven meme that makes the 8500 more fragile and more sensitive to punctual regular servicing than an ETA 2892-A2 while offering zero advantages whatsoever.

Also too bad that a $4,000 Acqua Terra has hilariously cheap build quality and finishing on the dial, hands, case and bracelet. Literally worse than a Seiko Brightz, having handled both up close.

>Tudor Pelagos:
+ more prestigious
+ much better movement

- chunkier, thicker, blockier than the Seiko
- more bland (matte everything)
- Ti scratches very easily
- bezel sticks out a little, risk of popping it off when snagged

>Seiko Transocean:
+ case and bracelet very interestingly designed
+ interesting textures & materials (shiny bezel, very finely textured dial, chrome accents)
+ thinner than the pelagos, and a lot less blocky
+ date doesn't take the place of an entire lume marker

- meh movement
- giant generic S E I K O logo
- virtually zero options other than standard bracelet

I like the Seiko a lot, but I definitely think I'd feel much prouder about wearing the Pelagos.

The aesthetics of the Tudor are much better to my eyes. The Tudor looks and feels more special. You can see in the photo how substantial it is. The Tudor has the better movement by far. If anything puts you off a watch, just don't buy it, unless it's for purely practical use (ie. buy a beater).

Nah, not really.

It's just that this specific Seiko is meh compared to the Pélagos.

A grand seiko (spring drive maybe) is more comparable in price, and you get original design, much better finishing and a better, still in-house, movement.

My issue with the Pelagius is, paying 4000$ for a sub homage, while the exact same sub used to cost less than that in 2008. And then Rolex decided to just double the price.

Sounds like a broken mainspring.

But if you need to buy tools etc. to disassemble the watch and replace the mainspring, might as well buy a whole movement if they're cheap enough.

Honestly if you try that and it doesn't fix it you've just spent too much time and money trying. I would not do it. Also that watch kit is not even worth 5 dollars. Everything in it will break and may not work to begin with. I am not sure what watch you have but check the movement information and you can get one for 30 bucks on this site. https://meranom.com/en/movements/vostok-watch-2414a-movement.html

Unless the integrated bracelet is like the ones on the Road, Nautilus or Overseas, I would avoid them.

Don't underestimate the utility of a changeable bracelet. That being said, the pelagos looks too brutish;I prefer the meme blackedbay, more versatile looking imo. Pelagos is a chunky looking sports watch, through and through, but the blackbay would do for the odd dress shirt/tie/blazer outing better than the former.

The Seiko had some nice elements, but as a whole I say no.

Don't. I know it's cheap, but don't.
Buy an honest ripoff (rolex) for your money and not this "swiss" piece of shit that has a bracelet, case, dial and hands and probably half the movement made in China and Thailand for all we know.

Many a time wandering through some airport, alone and far from home after another waste of time business trip I come across the inevitable Omega boutique in duty free, and in my weaker moments I've almost been tempted by these submariner wannabes. And they're so cheap in duty free, too!

Then I come to my senses and remember that it's a glorified, Chinese made swatch with a stupid movement.

Get a rolex. At least you can be assured that it's made where it says it is, and that it doesn't have a retarded movement with a gimmicky escapement that is there purely for marketing purposes (to try to compete with rolex, lol) rather than for any tangible benefit. It increases complexity, and thus ensures future service fuckery, and yet others that go with the tried and tested escapement types manage to go toe to toe or exceed the co-fagsual without the bullshit.

If you want to LARP James Bond get the pre coaxial plain jane ETA SM.
The 2254.50 is the last good looking semenmaster, but its price is climbing because of this. The blue wavy Brosnan sm can be had for cheap.

Still a chinese made swatch though, so be sure to buy cheap.

The reason why watches like a Patek Calatrava or even a humble datejust or day-date are such common heirlooms is because they are simple, refinedn(more or less, in the case of the rolexes) and classic.

A simple, refined watch of a reasonable, not faddy size will stand the test of time better. The tide is already turning as China isn't allowed to buy shit anymore.

You don't want to be passing down some fucking garish blingy dinnerplate that says to your progeny that their father or grandfather was a trend following moron suckered in by mountainjew marketing engineered to entice the mainland Chinese and tasteless Arabs is was likely some kid of nigger.

Aesthetically I like the design, and it looks well made, but $675 USD is just too much for a watch with a Miyota 9015. At that pricepoint I'd want an ETA 2824-2.

>>60802240
Anyone trying to sell you an ETA 2824-2 powered watch for more than $1,000 is treating you with Apple levels of customer contempt. There's no excuse for not using the far superior 2892-A2 at $1,000+.

As for Tudor specifically, their in-house models are close enough in price to their previous ETA 2824-2 powered models that I couldn't remotely justify buying the ETA versions. Tudor's in-house movement is a massive step up from any 2824-2 derivative.

The Pelagos is titanium, so it's going to get scratched up horribly in no time at all.
Just look at all the refurbished 1-2 year old Pelagi for sale on chrono24.

The Seiko on the other hand has an all-ceramic bezel that takes up a lot of the watch's height as well, so it's going to keep looking pristine for ages.
The bracelet supposedly also has a scratch-resistant coating.

So there's that.

Whelp, I retract my earlier point. I would totally buy the Halios over those two, and now that I think about it, I would probably buy it over any of the Seiko divers in the same price range. That doesn't make Halios' $675 price fair, mind you, and I still wish Miyota would make a version of the 9015 with a damned micro-adjuster for the regulator.
>>
>>60806469
Bi-directional winding would be nice too.

Honestly any alternatives I've been able to find to the halios are either more expensive, ugly, or both.

If the BB36 had a rotating bezel, the tudor in house movement, and be <=12mm thick it'd be pretty much perfect.

that wouldn't leave a lot of room for a caseback, a dial, hands and a crystal.

>>
>>60806697
I don't see why not, the bb36 is rated to 150m. Maybe you couldn't have something rated to 500m like the pelagos at 12mm.
