I have a very old VAIO laptop (pic related, came with vista about 11 years ago i think) and after several years using it i think it's time to upgrade to something better, it can barely handle 3d rendering anymore

i do not have much money to invest on a new laptop and i am considering a refurbished thinkpad

which model would you suggest with these specs:

- cpu faster than 2.26GHz
- at least 8gb, ideally 16gb but would that even be possible?
- 13"
- less than 500$

would this even be possible?
from what i understand by reading the wikis, the x200 model would be the only sub-15" option, is that correct? pity it's fucking expensive

t. clueless and poor
>>
>>60778247
What's your use-case? Btw CPU clock speeds don't really matter anymore since about 2008 or something.

>>

That's a 14" laptop.

>>

Yeah 1" doesn't really make that much of a difference, it's still better than the piece of shit you posted.
>>

X230
>>
>>60778422
Better in not meeting the requirements? Or better in worse trackpad and keyboard?
>>
>>60778271
I normally use my laptop to sustain myself, freelancing in these fields:
- programming, usually scripted frontend faggotry (using vim or sublime text)
- running a lamp server for testing
- working with vector and bitmap images for print (using photoshop, illustrator, indesign)
- editing videos (aftereffects and premiere)
- making music (fl studio)
- 3d rendering (usually blender, other programs are way too heavy)
- live vjing (resolume)

It's very clear to me that such tasks, especially 3d, should be done on a well perfoming desktop; but I travel often on foot or bike and stealth camp around 3/4 of the yea, so i need something portable; 13" would be ideal compromise between retardedly small and too big to fit in my backpack / bike bags (14" hardly fit during colder months because of all the extra bullshit i have to carry with me)

It's also very clear to me that it would be better to switch to FOSS software and hardware, and where I can i stick to software that interjects for a moment.

> Btw CPU clock speeds don't really matter anymore
ah thanks!

>>60778338

My question stands
>>
>>60778446
Better in every conceivable way minus the non important 1" difference in screen size. I personally offended you would even suggest someone buy a *40 series thinking.
>>
Retro when
>>
>>60778465
Ok sure *50 and newer have the better touchpad keys again, but apart from that Thinkpad keyboards are still better than any Dell imo.
>>
>>60778487
>Thinkpad keyboards are still better than any Dell imo.
You're probably right. I just had such a bad experience with the *40 series touchpads that they should never be recommended.
>>
>>60778456

I wanted something portable with good battery life and almost got an X260 myself from the lenovo outlet. I found cheap t440s with a 1080p screen / swapped trackpad and got that instead.

If price isn't a concern, I think the main advantage of the x230 is that it can be corebooted. Libreboot will be available by next year too, supposedly.

all of the other specs are kind of important too

if the X260 has a 1080p screen, 16gb RAM, and a 500gb SSD then yeah that would be a much better deal than an X230 with 4gb ram missing the hard drive

and vise versa...
>>
>>60778456
My opinion: if you're actually using your mobile computer as a mobile mobile computer at uni, work or elsewhere absolutely get the newer models. The battery life is just so worth it.

If it says no optical drive does that mean it was taken out and there is now just empty space. Or did it not have it in the first place.
https://m.newegg.com/products/9SIA5HA45Z6592
>>
>>60778805

That model doesn't have an optical drive.
They probably put it in the name because at the time that model was released, the concept of an ultrabook with no optical drive was still new.

It wouldn't have been out of the question for someone to buy a laptop having mistakenly assumed that any computer would obviously have an optical drive.

Honestly if you're doing it for i7 and usb 3, I wouldn't. Some low percentage improvement in some benchmark is not worth it... and for usb, I can't remember the last time I transferred data via usb, so that's the only usecase usb 3 matters right? I don't charge my phone via laptop.

seems like a good price yeah

>>

depends on the reseller, usually they define what their 'grades' mean

(it's pretty irrelevant)

depends on the person selling it.
Generally though, Grade A is going to appear to be brand new, while Grade B means there might be subtle signs that it was used (tiny scratches, etc) but no significant wear n tear.

The T430 only has 2 usb 3.0 connections, but intels data on the chipset says it supports up to 4 and something like 10 usb 2.0 ports.

Intels schematics also mention that the usb lines do not need any resistors, it seems to be a straight trace to the port.

It'd be neat to add some usb 3.0 ports, but I doubt those traces are exposed ;(

Should it be fine as long as the vents are not blocked?

cpu fans are fine, screen hinges are fine

although the X220 and X230 are prone to cracking the corners of the palmrest

2 questions;

Any battery bands for the x220t that are reputable?
The OEM battery costs more than half of what I paid for it and I don't feel like spending that much for just a battery for such an old laptop.

Also how's the Thinkpad Yoga S1?
I've been looking for a replacement for my x220t, the 2520m is chugging hard in things like Photoshop and the 1366x768 display is pretty low res to do graphics stuff on now. I enjoy drawing and editing, and the digitized display is more appealing than a tad more powerful laptop with a standalone graphics tablet.
I know about the soldered on ram and such, but the 8gb model should be enough.

If you want it to work on an internal monitor, you need to screw around but I can't remember the process right now.

But if you're okay with an external monitor, then all you need is the ExpressCard adapter for the eGPU, the monitor of your choice and a power brick made by Dell (forgot the model) or, if space isn't a concern, you can use just about any regular ATX PSU.

>>60784774
I'm on 4GB ram with 4GB swap, it's fine up until I get to 30 chrome tabs, then it starts swapping.
Previously, I had only 2GB with a 4GB swap and it would thrash my SSD constantly.
I would max out the ram if possible, 2x4GB is currently $53 and it's only going to skyrocket in the coming months now that the only 3 ram manufacturers are price fixing.

I agree with this anon, I used to lug around a crappy 15.6", low-spec Toshiba daily, to high school, and on top of that I sometimes walked about 2 miles from the bus stop to my house because I lived in a place where there's direct buses ONLY at 6:00 AM.
I feel no big difference from the T530 nowadays.

And the way that piece of shit Toshiba laptop was built kinda reminded me of those Lanix desktops that were full tower but had these Intel Atom processors and motherboards inside.
Felt like I could play dodgeball with them.

Google the pinout for connecting a raspi to an SOIC8 ship.

use the program flashrom to dump the both of the flash chips (there's two chips usually).

concatenate the two dumps (8MB + 4MB).

use idftool to extract the firmwares.

use me-cleaner on the extracted ME firmware.

repack it, split the 12MB image.

flash the 8MB image back on.

Windows 10 does

but it does not work very well and I don't believe you can set it up to turn on laptop + log in via fingerprint swipe, I think it only stores the fingerprints in the OS/on the hard drive while Lenovo's software stores it in the BIOS chip, allowing you to also use it for BIOS supervisor password, etc.

two sticks at different size and capacity will:

you need mSATA
~$150 for the base unit
~$60 for 8GB DDR3 new
$60-$100 for a new genuine 9cell
~$100 for a 128GB mSATA SSD
$90+ for a 7mm 2TB HDD

you can buy RAM used to get it cheaper, can't recommend buying used storage. the HDD has to be 7mm height, standard 9.5mm drives won't fit in the SATA bay. don't fall for the SSHD meme.

also little sense in buying any battery that isn't a new genuine 9cell, knockoffs aren't reliable enough, smaller batteries aren't cheaper enough, and you'll likely already have a used battery so there's no reason to gamble on another used one.

who the hell needs a 2tb hard drive in an x220?
Just get a 256gb msata ssd for now (those are like $150 or less) for now, then if you really need more space pick up a 500gb normal sata ssd for $150-$200
Then get a chinky 9 cell for $30 and that will give you a good year or two of use instead of an official one that would give you 2-3 years for $90
Plus a lot of thinkpads ship with 1 4gb stick, and getting a second 4gb is $20 used (no reason to buy new ddr3 ram)
>>
>>60790966
>one charge
The X220t have 6 cell batteries?
>>
>>60791650
When I said 8GB I actually meant getting a second 4GB stick. Also, I don't mind about hdd space. Don't thinkpads come with a 320GB HDD or something? Or is it the one it comes with considered slow and unusable? About the SSD, I found a 120GB MSATA one (new) for about 60 eurodollars. Is that worth it?
>>
>>60791747
don't buy new ram, they all have lifetime warranties
And even adjusting for europoor prices they should be less than 30 eurobux for a 4 gig stick
Same with msata drives, If you are buying a used laptop buy used parts (except for batteries). No 99% of used ssds will stay good long enough that they will be irrelevant before they die
60 eurobux for a 120gb ssd should be fine, but imo get a 250 gig drive
Thinkpads usually come with 250-500gb hard drives
but it's $CURRENTYEAR hard drives do not belong in laptops (especially the ultra portable ones), so try to avoid them at all costs

No, it isn't. The only time I have ever gotten a ThinkPad off eBay in 'Grade A' condition was when I bought one that was literally never used. They'll call it 'Grade A' generally and I'll see keyboard wear and at least 10 scuffs all over the chassis, and that's just from the grainy smartphone images they take. Doesn't matter to the average eBay ThinkPad buyer though, seeing as they're all dirty scrubs who probably don't even clean the laptop upon arrival.

My X220 gets about 6 hours with a relatively new 9 cell battery, which is not great. And I'd prefer to not have to mess with the FHD mod. Newer models look nicer as well.

I've put in a new fan and cooling unit in my W510, but the trackpad stopped working after I un-plugged and plugged it. The trackpoint and everything else works. Any clues to where I should start looking for the solution?
>>
>>60792973
Maybe you should start looking at the trackpad connector, maybe? Isn't it obvious?
>>
>>60778599
Yes.
>>
>>60792608
>fucked
But the trackpad is useless. Remember the thinkpad with only the trackpoint? I wish they would drop the trackpad for reduced weight.
>>
>>60784706
i do fine with 2
>>
>>60793206

I'm not talking about the trackpad you fucking brainlet. I'm talking about how he fucked up the removal.

>Remember the thinkpad with only the trackpoint? I wish they would drop the trackpad for reduced weight.

You're incredibly fucking stupid. Do you forget that the LAPTOP needs the screen and bottom portion to both be the same size? Yeah, no, they can't just lop off a quarter of the body chassis around the trackpad and palm rest. Or do you think the actual trackpad assembly which weighs like 50 grams should go for saving weight?

The plug doesn't seem to have any physical damage/alterations and fits right back in.

I've tried looking for software that recognizes what hardware is connected, but the mousepad seems to be connected through the moterboard. I tried looking through the BIOS startup, but I couldn't find any settings related to it there.

I'm meeting a woman tomorrow to buy her x200 for £50 ($65 for amerifags). She mentioned the battery needs replacing. Other than that it seems too good to be true. 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Intel Core Duo 2.40ghz, charger and great condition. Have I found a good deal or am I missing something?
>>
>>60793562

She's a woman who's done no research and doesn't know what the laptop is worth. Not uncommon even on eBay with female sellers. All this woman sees is some old looking black laptop that she thinks is worthless.
>>
Convince me to get a Thinkpad 13 (silver, 7th gen) over an X260 for $30 less.
>>
>>60793591
She's not wrong

>I wish they would drop the trackpad for reduced weight.
mate it's not like they're making a satellite where they need to save every gram
in the grand scheme of things the trackpad is nothing and if they didn't have one, normrods wouldn't be able to handle the trackpoint and they would either introduce it back, or drop the thinkpad line due to shit sales
>>
Is Thinkpad x131 for ~$90 a good deal? Please respond
>>
>>60789262
my mum uses an x201t with 8GB of RAM for internet, email, Word, and Excel and I've never had any complaints form her, and she would complain if there was a problem
>>
>>60789262
it's fine, just make sure to get the good screen and the good battery
>>
>>60791255
they don't usually talk about them because they don't have the money, but like you said, their performance up until recently has been shit
>>
>>60785931
>P71
what are you going to be using it for?
>>
Is Libreboot possible on a x9100 T400? And please don't say Coreboot, I want muh maximum freedumbs
>>

Are you retarded son?
>>
>>60787574
I have an X200T I use mostly for watching media and the odd bit of handwriting.

I recommend you get a regular X220 and only later get a X61 or X200 tablet if you really feel like you need it. They are very handy as well a 'tablet', but not so much as a graphics tablet.

I bought a X200 for very cheap, only it seems to be missing half the screws. Does anyone know where can I get them for a reasonable price?
>>
>>60794785
they're standard screw sizes

depends which ones specifically but they should all be between m2x3 and m2x5

just go to the hardware store or hobby store and they should have them
>>
>>60793383
That's the only way to remove the x240 trackpad dipshit. There are no screws.
>>
>>60794742
it's super overkill for that
>>
>>60792944
Are you at least overclocking?
>>
>>60794917
Shit, are you serious anon?

I'm so glad I fell for this meme. I just found out the other day the power cord was also standard.
>>
>>60790992
Slap pfsense in it and use as dedicated firewall

>>60791343
It's good, and how did you get it for that price?
>>
>>60793562
I know exactly which one you're talking about and yes it's fuckin excellent. A new chink battery should be around 20 quid with shipping. Watch out for vans and good luck!

If the t470p would come with thunderbolt, would it be worth it?

Jeb uses a ThinkPad. Trump uses a Mac.
What's your excuse?
>>
>>60796576
>probably that thinkpad has worse battery life than the mac
LOW ENERGY.
>>
>>60796547
I was thinking software side.
Checking if the BIOS is password protected is obvious.
But what about the other stuff?

I was thinking of getting Hirens bootCD or Gandalf's on USB flash drive to test the CPU/RAM/Battery/HDD.

T series or X series for a dev?
>>
>>60796714
X is small enough to carry around and large enough to use as your primary machine.
>>
>>60796601
That's exactly what Linux ISOs are for. Stuff you listed is borderline cancer.
Boot Ubuntu or Mint, click around for a bit, and you're done.

Are ulv processors good?
>>
>>60796852
Not until the seventh generation, and only then because they get ddr4 and other little things.
>>
>>60796396
er-go-nom-ics my dude. If your bag fits correctly you can carry more weight before causing damage.
>>
>>60796852
X-series generally use the same processors as the T-series.
>>
>>60796872
Only possible with backpacks with a good back support.
>>
>>60796882

According to the wiki, somo are not ulv

>>60796867

welp, cant buy a new one
>>
>>60796435
Hardware defects rear their ugly head shortly after unboxing, if it's made it this far, the hardware is fine, you probably still want to clean it out and reapply thermal paste if the heatpipe is conveniently placed, x series need not apply.

Not necessarily.
Maybe the previous owner switched the HDD with dying one, or the RAM is not as it advertised.

Why?

I wonder which laptop is more American, the chinese factory lenovo thinkpad or the chinese sweatshop apple macbook

I'm actually curious which one might be more American, like if any parts are still made in anywhere that isn't china
