Why is US internet so shit?

>The EU got internet way after the US, so their infrastructure is newer and therefore delivers better speed.
Bullshit. We had internet before fiber, and have replaced old infrastructure to achieve today's speeds.

>We can't do the same in the US because our country is too big
30x the size and population means 30x the subscribers which means 30x the money, i mean 90x the money, your ISPs charge you about 3x compared to EU ISPs. There's more than enough resources to expand fiber.

What's REALLY stopping the US to become first-world when it comes to internet connectivity?

Because it is run by leftist government officials instead of private citizens. Fortunately Trump is fixing that.
>>

>>
>>60716005
The isps have no need to improve their infrastructure since they have so little competition and still charge their customer exorbitant prices. They can pretty much do whatever they want.
>>
dumbasses will say because it's so big.
>>
>>60716024
But it's only during recent years that the US has been catching up.
>>
>30x the size and population means 30x the subscribers which means 30x the money, i mean 90x the money, your ISPs charge you about 3x compared to EU ISPs. There's more than enough resources to expand fiber.
"fiber" doesn't help everything when circuits are still copper, all these dense areas need asics upon asics upon asics upon asics upon asics, 20 layers of redundancy, 20 ports dedicated to more throughput than a port can allow on its own

the way population is distributed is why things suck

>What's REALLY stopping the US to become first-world when it comes to internet connectivity?
first word is an alliance status
>>
Having shit internet is a good thing. The faster your internet connection is the easier it is for governments to spy on you.
>>
>>60716097
that's retarded. why would you say that?
>>
>>60716005
>30x the size and population means 30x the subscribers which means 30x the money

Except everyone lives 30x further apart, in small, scattered, local population centers, farm towns, when not in a suburb or a city. So 90x the network cost.
>>
>>60716141
90x the network cost should be ok though with 90x the money, no?
>>
>>60716096
>the way population is distributed is why things suck
most of the population is grouped into a few cities. you could provide a fiber connection to millions just by installing fiber in the top 10 cities.
>>
>>60716024

Trump has done absofuckinglutely nothing to help internet quality.

Nothing.

At the very least Leftists stopped corporate fuickwacks from fucking everyone in the ass and going turbo-overjew on everyone.

Post proof that trumps helping internet, at all so far.

I might take your shit with more then a grain of salt.
>>
>>60716167
found the cuck whiteboi
>>
>>60716155
bitch fiber is "installed" in the top 10 cities, that's how those distances are connected in the first place

the local consumer having "fiber speeds" is only going to make a more congested network, again from being a problem of throughput on the damn switches

a switch might be rated for 40gbps out a port but it's only able to handle about 200gbps, and then you need another switch, and that switch needs to be connected to two other switches, and when that maxes out you need another two with 4 connections going to each one, and it expands to a point where it isn't fucking viable
>>
>>60716005
When Yuros say they only pay €20 for a 100/100mbit connection I cry every time, its just not fair bros. that service is like $100 for me, not even symmetrical.

the FCC crawling up cable ISP asses in the past several years got my local ISP to fuck off with their Broad-Band Limitation and subpar Up/Down speeds.

Show me some good that Orange Julius looking motherfucker has done for my Internet infrastructure.

I do like that he told the Paris Accords to go get fucked tho. I'll give'em that.

>>

fiber isn't some kind of magical connection, it's just a fucking wire made of glass instead of copper

we've been running it for decades, it isn't cheap to run copper any notable distances, because you need to keep shoving new powered links in there
by the time you got off dial-up as a resident, you were already taking advantage of fiber links

>all superior fiber infrastructure is owned by the big communications companies, but ultimately unused because "fuck you, use the shitty cable lines instead"

>active lobbying to prevent any smaller companies from competing or using/creating any infrastructure; have to live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere to be away from Comcast/Spectrum/ATT - even then, the internet plans suck harder

The ISPs control the nation's communication lines like the fucking mafia. It's a big "take it up the ass or be left in the dark" sort of deal.

They won't upgrade the network just because Korea or elsewhere has 100x faster internet. There's no valuable profit to gain from that because there's no competition in America. When your business dominates the market for a particular service, you're naturally going to cut corners and make the whole thing barely working enough to meet minimum expectations as a functional service, and priced just tolerably high enough to back the consumer into a corner without losing them completely.

Fundamentally, I believe the mentality is flawed SPECIFICALLY when it comes to net-societal benefits from certain critical things. There's a lot of shit I AGREE should be locally funded, petitioned, whatever. But there's some critical stuff which needs external funding. EG, the other big thing being education, where people not wanting their nickel going towards Tyrone's education in the poorer county didn't do the educational or social class gap any favors, which isn't good in the long run for everybody. Same shit with communications infastructure, it's simply too critical to 2005+12 like fucking drinking water is.

I doubt you'd agree to LEAVEGOVERMENTOUTOFDRINKINGWATER and welcome our Nestle overlords with open arms. So my question is basically why you think healthy telecommunications infrastructure isn't important for net societal benefit.

You need 10-20,000$ and some heavy machinery rentals and any locals who are knowledgeable.

It can be done.

They will charge you for using it even if you pay for every piece of hardware and cable. A lot of places have laws preventing you from forming your own ISP, but if you've got neighbors you might be able to get people to chip in for the line costs since it can benefit them too.

>>60717300
> who would want to compete with Comcast and why

Google. Amazon. Etc. Literally every internet based company that's bigger than Comcast. They need as much of society as possible using them, and Comcast getting in the way of that is bad.

Google fiber is a fucking dream where it's been rolled out. The biggest reason they didn't completely fucking crush established ISPs is due to decades and decades of laws funded by ISPs to prevent exactly that.

>why you think healthy telecommunications infrastructure isn't important for net societal benefit.

Look the internet is a really cool and potentially powerful thing. The thing is it was a cool and powerful thing at 14.4kbps.

Really all the societal benefits are realized at 5Mbps. Past that what you're really talking about is letting you, your wife, your wife's son, and you're wife's bull watch separate things on Netflix or Jewtube in 4k.

What's really missing is free market competition. Paying $50/mo for 5Mbps here is certainly annoying. It's not like it's harming society. Frankly if competition did bring the price down to $10/mo it would just let more ghetto niggers on. Does the internet really need more screenshots that have been through 100 generations of lossy jpeg compression?

It's not like water or sewage. Your melodramatic hyperbole serves no purpose. My neighborhood isn't going to have a designated shitting street because Jamal can't afford 1Gb/s internet

I will dig into the pole access issue a bit more, but I will give you an example for Canada (and to some extent the UK as well)

The infrastructure here is owned by the incumbents that have been around for ages already, Bell and Rogers (cable) mostly, with some other players in the other provinces too.

What the CRTC (canadas version of the FCC) decided to do to spur competition was to mandate that Bell and Rogers *must* wholesale (plus reasonable profit) their lines out to competitors.

While the majority of people still directly go with Bell or Rogers for internet, there are dozens of choices outside of those two companies.
Fed up with Bell ? fuck them, you can get internet through a smaller company that treats its customers much better and gives better prices.

Sure its not the perfect solution, but Bell and Rogers cannot be too complacent otherwise their profits will end up being just from wholesale access.

Can someone explain to me why:
If a government utility would destroy the existing market, why that market is supposed to exist as it does and be left as it does? The whole fucking point of a freemarket is that it can sometimes run better than government in terms of efficiency and innovation. The whole fucking point of government regulation or utility is because sometimes it can run better than the free market running shit into the ground at the citizen's expense.
Why does ANYONE shit on one system but take the other up the ass and ride it all the way into hell like it's the greatest thing ever?

Except they do.

Here's what happens when the government tries to run an ISP:

>Of the 20 projects evaluated, 11 are cash-flow negative.

>Of the 9 that are cash-flow positive, 7 would need more than 60 years to break even. (A network in Powell, Wyo., would take an estimated 1,253 years to break even at its current rate.)

>Only two — Bristol, Tenn., and Vernon, Calif., — are on track to break even within the life expectancy of the broadband network (30-40 years).

>Many cities managing these projects have faced defaults or reductions in bond ratings.

>Municipal fiber is not an option for the 86% of the country that is not served by a municipal power utility
