Also, do other brands have anything similar to ThinkPads/Latitudes/EliteBooks/etc? If I remember correctly Toshiba had Tecra or something, and Sony sold some metallic VAIOs in the era of the Core2Duo Merom...

Gotta say, running ChromeOS on my X301 isnt that bad. I use my T420 with Fedora 26 as my DD, so I dont care much about the loss in 'functionality' on this one.

Pretty much all X/T/W series Thinkpads come with a fingerprint reader, it's not a special feature.

Okay /tpg/ here's the question. I'm looking for a laptop with a real i7 not an """i7""". What I mean is it must have 4 cores and 8 threads. Here's what I have my eyes on:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude-E6420-Laptop-Intel-Core-i7-2720QM-2-20GHz-4GB-No-HDD-OS-Batt-/162533389853?hash=item25d7beb61d:g:ehMAAOSw8HBZLEoy

It's a Latitude E6420 with an i7-2720QM for 120 Ameri-shekels. Doesn't come with HDD, battery or AC adapter but I would have gotten a new battery and SSD anyway.

Is there any reason I shouldn't get this for the price? Is it a housefire? Will the screen suck worse than the one on my T420s? Please help, bros

>>60686579
Okay. Fair enough. Is there any reason why a laptop such as this one in better shape wouldn't be a good buy? I'm sure there are plenty of them for under 150. I'm just concerned about the screen quality and the possibility of it throttling too much.

I like my T420 but the screen kills my eyes and I could use a couple of more cores.
>>
>>60686606
I would look into something with an ivy bridge cpu and USB 3.0, if you wanted an upgrade.

Wasn't fast enough to reply before the thread was archived.
I think the x200 is a good option and I've been thinking about getting one myself. The core2duo processors are still decent for web browsing and watching youtube videos. If you get one of the later DDR3 models I think it's a good idea.

Thanks man. Last question. This:

>Latitude E6420
Huh.

I accidentally stole one of these a few years ago. Someone left it at a FedEx print shop. There's a sticker on it that said "property of xyz consulting" and a phone number. I called and left a voicemail, and tried to call again the next week. Even let the FedEx guys know I had it in case they came back. No response, and it had a BIOS password so I kinda just shelved it. I actually just went to go check it, and I come back and I see you're looking to buy the same exact model - interesting coincidence.

Is a BIOS password reset possible? I've got flashing hardware if that's required, I know that's how the ThinkPads are reset.
>>
>>60686728
seems decent but then you need a battery +50$ and charger +$15 (don't know actual prices but should be around there)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Elitebook-8470W-Intel-Core-i7-3610QM-2-3Ghz-8GB-500G-Win-7-Pro-14-/112406377207?hash=item1a2bf132f7:g:VdUAAOSwjqVZF4Y1

this seems like a pretty good deal to me, looks really clean and it seems to have the extended battery

doesn't come with a CD drive but there is something in the drive bay, probably a hard drive caddy, which are cheap but nice to have to begin with IMO

Similar T430's seem to go for about $400

bios-pw.org to remove the password, takes out most of them.

Thing is that, it may have computrace in the worst case scenario and maybe you might get pinged at 'stealing' it.
E6420 mobos are cheap and plentiful, I think you can get one as low as $27, and $45 for an nVidia one. Just look at if you have an intel or discrete heatsink... the HSFs are not interchangable, Dell slightly moved the CPU on the iGPU and dGPU models.
>dude, its a Dell
>>
>>60686728
Just took a close look at the pictures in that eBay listing. Haha. Seller claims it has a 1600x900 display but the pictures are of an e6420s not an e6420. The former only came with a 1366x768 screen. Lol. eBay.
>>
>>60687025
I'll give that a shot.

Don't care if it gets pinged, it's not like I swiped it off someone's lap, I'll just tell them I found it and give it back. This was like 2-3 years ago, and they'd have to pay to keep computrace up on it (which, if it's a consulting company, is definitely possible I suppose via some bulk package).

Unless it's worth the $27 to resell it or give away later, I don't care enough to buy a motherboard, I have like 4 ThinkPads I use and 5 other absolute trash laptops sitting in a bin. I only just realized that the Dell one might have been one of the business meme ones with a trackpoint.

Does it have coreboot? At least the xx20 systems can plug in an IvyBridge.

Don't need the extra performance? Get the t420 it's overall a nicer laptop
Want the extra performance? Get the t430. It costs more, the keyboard isn't as nice, but you get FAR faster 3d performance, and a decent amount faster cpu.

it should be noted that I had a hard time fitting it in my T530.
Hopefully you can see the grind marks the battery on the right side. I had to cut a tiny bit of plastic to make it fit well. It wasn't particularly complicated. On the left is a genuine battery for comparison.
It could be different on your model, but if you have a hard time fitting the battery, you'll know what to do.

My 2560p just arrived. I can see what people say when they say that the screen is garbage, but, honestly, I don't mind it too much. I've never owned an IPS monitor or laptop so it's usable to me. The only things I dislike is the lack of a third button for use with the pointing stick, and the fact that I have to hold the Fn key for Page Up/Down. It's also a little loud. probably something Ubuntu-based. Plain Ubuntu is usually frowned upon around here, and I think its stock desktop environment would use too much of screen real estate on a 12'' laptop.

I'd go with Mint. It looks similar to windows and works well on a tiny display. It's also rice-friendly if you'd want to go there.
And since it's Ubuntu based you can use Ubuntu PPAs, and if you have a problem with it you can ask on ubuntu forums.

quad-core T530/W530.
The autists here will say that the keyboard sucks, but it's only because they're used to old layout. It's pretty nice to type on, especially for a chiclet.
You could also go for newer models like T540 or T550, but it's not a REAL thinkpad and they're not much faster anyways.

good luck. AyyMD GPUs don't have nvidia optimus, which is literally the only reason why eGPUs work fine with very limited bandwidth.

I think the best GPU that isn't chocked is the 960 or 1050 (or they get a bit chocked, but not much).

But you can forget heavy cpu bound games. Total War games, for examçple, are so cpu heavy for calculating the movement of every single unit that between medium and ultra graphics settings, the performance is literally the same.

I'm one of the few that have done it.

First off, you have to take apart your ENTIRE laptop down to the motherboard. I've done this over a dozen times for various T430 systems. No big deal, just a little annoying. You need a Pi with linux and flashrom ready to go, along with jumper cables and an SOIC8 clip (like the Pomona). This is the easy part.

You have to extract both of the EEPROM chips, concatenate them, extract the Gb, ME, and Descriptor binaries. You have to also extract the vBIOS (good luck getting help with this), and then make sure you have PS/2 enabled in compile settings and make sure you set your compile settings EXACTLY or you will have no idea why your shit fails to boot.

Coreboot itself is annoying to compile, but doable. If you're on Linux, something like SeaBIOS is fine and the bullshit ends here once you set up power management (which you DON'T need to do on Vendor BIOS - but I assume most of you will anyway).

Ever need to boot Windows? lol @ your life.

If you're on Windows 10, you are using UEFI - which means you can go fuck yourself. You have to reinstall your entire OS in Legacy mode to get it to boot through SeaBIOS.

Alternatively, you can set up a second toolchain from scratch that has no documentation and compile the tianocore payload (I had someone provide me with an ivybridge compile). Then, when you actually build the damn thing and chain tianocore to coreboot, you realize there's no power management built in, and it takes over a fucking minute to boot. Windows sucks at this if it isn't spoon fed by the BIOS. Legacy installs need to do this too.

Coreboot+SeaBIOS is great if you're a full time Linuxfag. If you EVER think you need to boot into anything but Linux, don't even dream of trying coreboot.

So yes, the T420 supports IvyBridge. I haven't seen a single faggot here prove they have a fully working T420 with CoreBoot and IvyBridge, because the process of getting a proper install is a full weekend project.

Hi lads

My dumb ass roommate hosed down the boat we live on after placing my thinkpad x1 carbon underneath a leaky window. The thing is very well fucked now, and I loved it. Not only was it my first lenovo computer, but I fell in love with the thinkpad keyboard and the fact that it could run dark souls 2 at around 40-50 fps even though I only bought it for school.

While I want another thinkpad, I would really like to get ahold of something a little more powerful with a dedicated GPU. Would anyone recommend the Y50 or Flex 3? The specs look good on paper. My only concern is the keyboard performance. I just can't go back to shitty keyboards.

I've had problems with the trackpoint of my t460s since like forever. Older models were fine and I loved it. Basically the trackpoint was unusable with very bad scrolling, lot of drifting and just had to push the trackpoint very hard into one direction because it was slow as hell.

I've put a little bit of paper into the cap so it stands like 1-2mm higher and now I love it.

72Wh may not be enough though (for me).

ULVs get nice battery life and they require about that much to run around 10-12 hours. Quad cores take almost triple the juice (15W vs 35W). I wouldn't be happy with 72Wh battery. The t h i c c quad cores have ~94Wh batteries (legal limit for planes). That's what I would expect from a high end "thin" laptop. I know it doesn't happen because of space issue (they'd need to be 17"+ to fit in a larger/flatter battery), but still.

What's the newest Chinkpad I can get with a traditional (as in, non chiclet/island) keyboard? Preferably one with a discrete GPU, but an integrated one will work if it's my only option.

I currently have a T400 (P8400 2.26GHz, 8GB RAM, HD3470, SSD) and I am more than happy with its performance, but I am afraid that a day will come when a C2D no longer cuts it.

W/T520, or W/T530 with keyboard mod.
C2D is still fine for coming to /g/ and shitposting, maybe some light games such as AoEII or maybe even III... It'll last for those tasks for at least three more years before all companies add even more bloat disguised as "features" to their products that will render them unusable on older hardware.
Sorry for the blog.

Makes sense.

>or W/T530 with keyboard mod

Can you give me a quick rundown on the keyboard mod? Is it just replacing the keyboard itself or is it more involved?

Also I have no issues with the current Core 2 Duo, I just figure that until the industry unfucks itself and starts putting non-shit keyboards in notebooks again (which will probably never happen because everyone is up their own ass about buying thinner machines) it would be nice to have a little extra futureproofing in my machine.

>>
>>60703931
It's a bit more complicated.
First, you isolate some cables and reroute the connections.
Second, you mod the BIOS to restore full functionality, unless you like to have a spaghetti keyboard.

I mean, it's not as complicated as making Ivy Bridge work on xx20's, but it's a bit of a process.

Personally I like the feel of the T530 keyboard, but I might order another one sometime because the keys are really worn off. Not that big of a deal, but it kind of bothers me sometimes.

Also, if you do get a T/W530, there's the option of a Full HD (1920x1080, or 1080p) screen.

well there is more to it than that. Some keyboard modification and the pin that needs isolating(although most of the time its fine).
>>
>>60705413
Very few people do this / very few people (if any at all other than the one) have reported actual failures from not doing this.

I have had two keyboard mods work fine without the extra pin isolation. The problem resolves itself after it shorts.

That has the 1600x900 IPS panel in it and also the Nvidia Quadro NVS 4200M 512MB GPU as well so, it should be a nice machine if you can snag a battery, HD or SSD + tray cover (little piece of plastic for a few bucks on eBay), and the OS can be whatever you want.

Realize that it has no returns on that one because it's listed as "for parts or not working" - that seller's fine print says if it's listed as that type of product you get no warranty and no return capability at all so, if it's dead on arrival then you're out the $100+.

Since it doesn't say "WORKING" in the title or anywhere else in the list I personally would probably take the chance on it given it shows it's booted enough to get to the BIOS Setup screen (the E6420 does support UEFI as well but in a limited fashion).

The Nvidia models with the Quadro GPU and the 1600x900 display use a totally different heat sink as well as a different dual channel video cable (it's not the same as the 1366x768 models with or without the Quadro use, so be aware of that).

I own an E6420, would get that and swap the parts for it if I could afford it but look around, there are even better deals for the E6420 on eBay going on right now, some with 8GB of RAM and a hard drive for $140-ish and well worth it.
>>
>>60687054

There's never been an E6420s model, just the E6420, E6420 ATG, and the E6420 XFR, you're babbling on about shit you know nothing about, son.

The Service Tag for that specific one shows it's got the "premium" IPS 1600x900 panel from Optronics in it, same panel I have in my E6420.

Also, if you have the Nvidia model as I mentioned in a post above you have to have the dual channel/link video cable or else it won't work with the 1600x900 panel, the single channel cable only works with the 1366x768 panel, a lesson I had to learn when I upgraded my E6420.

For T530/W530 it's pretty easy.
There are some tiny plastic tabs on the bottom of the palmrest that you'll need to break off.
You'll also have to grind off a tab on the keyboard where the middle scroll button is.
On the top you'll need to cut off a bit of plastic near Esc and PrtSc keys to make the keyboard fit perfectly. It will fit if without this step, but removing it later is a pain.
Then you need to flash custom BIOS, search for thinkpad-ec on github.

All of this may sound complicated but it's actually pretty easy, certainly easier than on X-series (see>>60704142)

The cheapest laptop with a FHD IPS display

All I want is a laptop with a IPS display but none! None! Of come with an IPS display...
I could buy a 23" IPS monitor for $120 and connect it to a $280 laptop and have a nice IPS display and a celeron laptop but! No $400 laptop comes with an IPS display!
Why!

If that is literally all you care about and you're willing to scrape bottom of the barrel garbage for it, look into an xx40 series ThinkPad. They have FHD IPS displays and can be as cheap as under $300. I believe nearly the entire line has FHD IPS options.

That was my mistake, I meant to say e6430 and e6430s. Since you know something about these, will the screen look okay or will it be a shitshow like the one in my T420s?

There are probably Atoms that outperform that Celeron. It's nothing like the desktop Pentiums, where you still get respectable single-core performance and just have less cores than the higher-end CPUs.

Wrong, the Celeron is still better than the Atom. (Both are found in Chuwi models)

It's just a tier like how the desktop has i7, i5, i3, pentium and laptops have i7u, i7, i5, i3, celeron, atom
as long as you have something 1 tier better than an atom you're safe

Which models in the T470 lineup come with IPS?

And is 1440p worth it on a 14" screen?
>>
>>60707570
No, 1080p on 14" is already more than sufficient. Only on the very largest laptop screens (17") could it be argued that 1440p is useful.
>>
>>60707878
Even at 17" 1440p is way to small
I have a 25" 1440p desktop screen and thats about as small as I'd like to go

35-38c is pretty good for idle (assuming that you didn't just wake it from sleep)
99/104c is the max it should ever hit, and if it hits 100/105c (forget which it is for sandy bridge) it should turn off to protect itself
but if your computer ever hits 104c it will throttle to prevent damage
>>
>>60708383
I couldn't find any W530s for that price. My T530 is pretty decent anyway, it has a 1080p AUO panel and a quad core CPU. I'm missing a dedicated GPU, but I wouldn't need it anyways so fuck it.

What replacement hard drives does /tpg/ recommend for the x220?
It takes standard 2.5 SATAs right?
>>

no it has to be a 'slim' 7mm height drive

most 2.5" HDD's are 9.5mm

almost all SSD's are 7mm though

you should be getting an SSD anyways

yes an X220 should last comfortably for a few more years (minus the battery)

and you can always take the hard drive out and stick it in another machine if you decide to upgrade (just get a 250gb ssd)
