this >>60689952 was for you
just look up emacsgifs anything emacs is cool
>>60689554
>>60689943
it's based off of Darwin/BSD you retard.
BSD has been around longer than linux.
You must be underaged.
>>60690932
>using the mouse so much
Please tell me you can do that with just the keyboard?
>>60690994
acme a text editor that uses the mouse a lot
thats acmes thing
>>60690932
oh my that is so sick
>>60690976
I just wanted to say
older things can copy newer different things
your argument makes 0 sense
>>60690932
What editor is that?
>>60691026
It's a UNIX-like system, so is Linux. You are so autistic there are no words for it.
>>60690994
not possible in Acme.
can't even configure key bindings.
I wish someone would make a modern version of Acme.
>>60691035
Acme
>>60691063
>Plan 9
I thought that I recognised it.
>>60691035
acme, instead of keybindings it uses mouse chording
>>60691055
I didnt say the first thing I just said how your argument is shit just because something is longer around doesnt mean shit
>>60691026
>graphical editors use mouse a lot
You know this is false right?
You are more likely to use a mouse with vim than with a graphical editor
>>60691093
I never use my mouse with vim, but you can. It's useful for scrolling, if you have that enabled.
>>60691093
>graphical editors use mouse a lot
said who?
I just said acme uses the mouse a lot
>>60690932
>Selecting everything with the mouse instead of Edit ,|awk ...
>>60691026
>acme a text editor that uses the mouse a lot
>thats acmes thing
Ok, I heard a lot of good about Plan 9 so I'm willing to be open-minded here, but how does acme manage to make editing effective using the mouse? It's pretty much universal consensus that keyboard input is much faster and more precise than mouse input.
>>60691234
I have no idea, I use emacs and no mouse at all so dont ask me. but some people like it apparently.
according to http://acme.cat-v.org/ Dennis Ritchie uses acme too
sidenode, I've always looked at acme as a why would you do that editor but that doesnt take away that the concept is kinda cool. maybe people with 1 hand use acme and a 1 hand maltron keyboard
Figuring you Fagott

>>60690932
tfw someone posted something i made
>>60691234
there is NOTHING wrong with using mouse. chording is faster and overall better
>>60691560
hey man, cool gif appreciate it
>>60691560
>there is NOTHING wrong with using mouse
Except moving your hand from the keyboard to the mouse.
Chording does sound interesting though, but nevethreless I'm skeptical whether it's worth it. I think I'll try it out though.
>>60690932
jesus nigger you are a slow typer
>>60691896
1 hand on keyboard, 1 hand on the mouse? thats what i do
>>60691951
Do you type all your text one-handed? That explains why it took you five minute to type a 50-character script in the gif.
>>60691896
>>60691972
>>60691999
Amazing artistic skills. But is efficient use of acme achievable without a $500 meme keyboard?
>>60690932

>Amazing artistic skills
thanks man
and idk and idc I am just here to explain why and how some people might work and how it might be efficient.
I still havent tried acme nor ever will
>>60692060
Fair enough. I'm still interested in how you could make it work on normal hardware though, if >>60691560 would be so kind as to explain his setup

>>60692105
idk i use plain keyboard with normal 2button+scrollwheel mouse. people are angery im not typing the fastest tho
>>60691560
I thought it was really cool, so I saved it for threads like this.

Hm, how about a "Actually useful things text editors can do gifs" thread?
And I totally take formatting plugins, column/multicursor editing and macros/scripting for granted.
>inb4 you post weird semi-visual experimental editors where text is actually parsed into visual token and structures while you edit them
how can i easily make a gif on GNU+Linux?
this is something i've begun doing, its really neat how you can load stuff from other files into the current file in Vim
still somewhat new to it but i will probably never leave Vimnnoremap ,cppm :-1read $HOME/.vim/.skeleton.cpp<CR>/{<CR>:noh<CR>o
and .skeleton.cpp#include <stdio.h>
#include <iostream>
int main(int argc, const char **argv)
{
return 0;
}

>shitty ad hoc music player

Next you're going to tell me that a tetris game or email accounting in a text editor is a useful thing.
A useful thing in a texteditor would probably have something to do with editing text.
it gets annoying after a few minutes, but it's still fun
Stop fucking posting gifs you shits. It's 2017, webms are a thing now and you can actually pause those to see what's being done. Take the OP gif, if you're not "fluent" in vim yet and want to learn something you're SOL.

In the browser. Sure I can download it and open it in mpv or something but I want to just expand all images and videos and be done with it.
>>60694933
Exactly. Any other examples of functionality that has nothing to do with text editing and could be done better in a dedicated program if 9fag it such a thing?
>>60695014
>9fag it such a thing?
*had
>>60695014
it would NOT be better. sending an email is basically editing text. of course you can use mail in regular terminal but its inferior to acme's mail. dedicated non integrated programs are bloat

why is cool shit always done on macOS???? why are all these developers always using macs?
I ask coz whenever I go on Github, all the screenshots of some of the biggest projects are from macs.
WHY?????
>>60694066
> semi-visual experimental editors
What are some examples of such editors?
I am interested.
>>60695901
https://github.com/makepad/makepad.github.io
https://github.com/createuniverses/praxis
These are two I know of.
The first one uses webgl to render the UI. So everything is rendered on the GPU. I don't like that it's in Javascript, but that enables you to do some cool things. For example you can edit the code of the UI and reload it in real time. There's a nice presentation of it on youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOiuJ_Gll_E
The second one is a 3d live coding environment that integrates a few languages directly into it.
It's not really a text editor, it's more like a tool you'd use as a demoscene artist. But I think it looks really cool. It doesn't seem like it's still in development though.
Here's a demo of how it looks like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN_pF2YjoEA
>>60695901
http://4coder.net
4coder is another one. It's targeted towards programmers and aims to be as configurable as emacs but more efficient, and it's written entirely in C++ without the integration of elisp. The configuration is also done in C++.
I guess it's trying to become an editor with good support for many programming languages without being as bloated as an IDE.
It's still in development, but not open source unfortunately.
what screen capture software do people use here to make these .gifs?
>>60695738
1.Vim is also on GNU/Linux and *BSD and even windoesz i think
2.Hyper is a shit terminal that only a macfag could ever use
3.the last one is not even on macOS
>>60697165
I use LICEcap, would be nice to find a better alternative though
>>60697183
thats not my question. ALL of the animations I linked to were clearly made by people on Macs.
>>60697165
QuickTime, then ffmpeg to convert to webm or gif
>>60697183
Last one IS actually on OS X. i used mavericks (can tell by cursor), but acme is cross platform (at least 6 platforms)
>>60694066
Just write some lisp. Boom, now you're editing data blocks
>>60695219
