I would just like to butt in for one moment. What you're alluding to as Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I've of late taken to calling it, GNU and Linux. Linux is not an operating system on its own, but really another free section of a completely working GNU system fashioned into something practical by the GNU libraries, terminal facilities and required system components fulfilling a full OS as described by POSIX.

Quite a few computer users use a flavor of the true system constantly, without even realizing. Through a strange series of events, the edition of GNU which is widely used now is often called "Linux", and a substantial number of its users do not know that it is really the GNU system, created by GNU.

There is in fact a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is but a part of the system they use. Linux is really the core: the program in the system that distributes the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The core is an essential part of an operating system, but cannot work on its own; it can only function in the shadow of a whole operating system. Linux is often used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is really GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. Every one of the "Linux" distros are really distros of GNU/Linux.

NVIDIA Quadro K2000M 2GB
8GB RAM

$500 refurb. Was supposed to get the model with an i5 Dual and K1000M 1GB but they sent me the next model up. I'm okay with this.

Got it from Newegg on eBay since their shipping is cheaper than on the actual site.

Love it. So much better than the Thinkpad T410 I was using, which actually started overheating the night before the HP arrived.

It's more for school than for gaymen but I can play most games on high settings excluding the newest bleeding edge titles.

Swapped the DVD Drive for a HDD caddy, got a little 90 degree adaptor so the AC cable isn't sticking directly out of the back anymore.

I'm waiting on a replacement keyboard for it with a backlight. Should be arriving monday.

It came with Windows 10 Pro for free so I stuck with that, ran whatever tool is supposed to clean out most of the botnet crap. Only problem is the fingerprint reader driver hasn't been updated for Win10 so I hope HP fixes it or I find a compatible program.

fucking jews, calling i3 a i7.. A FUCKING i3

I don't see the fucking reason why they decided to screw with the names of the processors.. all the way back to 1156/1366 they fucked with the names.

what is so hard with naming:

dualcore with cucked cache: pentium

dualcore with HT: i3

quadcore: i5

quadcore with HT: i7

hexacore: i9

But no, a i3 over a certain multiplier is suddently a i5, and on laptops even a i7.

Then on 1366 there is quadcore i7's, i7 920, i7 950, i7 975... and they just throw in a hexacore and call it i7 970

WHAT THE FUCK

Samsung X430
I've had it for about six years now.
Only has USB 2.0 ports
Screen is glossy and has terrible viewing angles
3.5mm jack is loose and works intermittently
Battery lasts for about half an hour
HDD is 320GB
Optic drive works like ass
The B kay stopped working
It overheats during summer
It has a shitty low power CPU
It has a shitty low tier GPU
So no, I'm not happy with it. But I just use it to lurk 4chan, download torrents and play movies (on a big ass screen through HDMI) so I really can't complain, because I don't -need- something better.

Bought a refurbed unit in December and it's been great. Had to replace the heatsink, and I ended up replacing the keyboard and battery that came with it, but other than that it's been smooth sailing. Does everything I need it to do, and I even do a little bit of light gaming on it.

Only complaints I have are minor image retention issues and the fact that's pretty heavy for a 12" notebook, but other than that, it kicks ass.

The screen is supposed to be matte and sort of is but glares like its glossy. Only 3 USB 3.0 ports, with two of them sharing bandwidth and power. Would not recommend, but I got it 45% off.

Thinkpad X201
>2.5gh i5-540m dual core/hyperthreading
>Intel Ironlake Mobile Integrated Graphics
>4gb DDR3 ram 1066mhz
>Intel 80gb SSD SATA2
>1200x800 TN display with 54% srgb coverage
>Xubuntu 16.04 Xenial

Overall performance is excellence. All web tasks run quickly and smoothly. High quality 1920x1080 HD video output via the VGA out is good. Color output on the laptop screen is adequate.

Office software also runs flawlessly and has an extremely short start-up. The screen is good and bright, and the color coverage is adequate for non-color critical work.

Emulator performance via RetroArch is good, but shaders are not viable with the iGPU. Stick to screen overlays and bilinear filtering. PC gaming must be done only in software rendering, so your options will be mostly older games.

The keyboard is excellent, one of the best keyboards on a laptop this size. I can type as easily and accurately as I can with my full-size desktop keyboard.

Battery life is very good. 8 hours on a full charge with a 9 cell battery is common. The laptop does not get very hot or uncomfortable in the lap. The fan runs occasionally and is quiet.

Laptop is not heavy. I carry it everywhere and do not coddle it. It continues to work as well as it did the day I received it, and it has had many many hours of operation before I used it looking at the shine on the keyboard. One pixel has gone dead near the upper right corner of the screen.

Highly recommend this laptop.

I bought it with two T400's and a Dell Latitude E6400 from an auction for $30. The Thinkpads all worked, but the Latitude had a bad GPU.

The X201 I had to buy the SSD, drive caddy, and cover for it. I bought the SSD off of ebay for $18 and the caddy/cover for another $8 or so. I traded the 1gb RAM module out of the E6400 for a 3rd party AC adapter for the Thinkpads at a local computer repair center. I sold the E6400 on ebay for $30 after installing 256mb module I had laying around.

Overall I have $16 in the X201.

The T400s are very nice too. Very solidly built. Even more so than the X201. Performance is almost as good. The X201 will effortlessly play 1080p youtube videos, but the T400 will need 100% utilization with an occasional stutter (unless you play through a dedicated media player like VLC, where playback is flawless).

I got rid of all the orange/red accents and it looks like a normal laptop. Model: Asus gl502vs
>>
>>60609276
I have the Lenovo G50-80 and it's running Fedora 26.

And I'm not very happy with it. I replaced the original RAM and HDD with 16 GB and a 500 GB SSD so that's fine. The CPU is fine. There is no iGPU but that's also fine, I have a desktop if I want to play steam games, I don't really need to do that when I'm on the move.

There's three things I am not happy about.

First of all, the screen is a 1080p TN panel. This is the primary reason why I'd like a new laptop. Sadly 99% of the laptops on the market still have 720p TN panels. A $99 panel can have a crisp clear 1080p IPS but it's too hard to put a 1440p IPS or AHVA on a laptop?

Secondly, the camera on it is on par with a 20 year old cellphone. Why is it that a $99 cellphone can have a 13MP camera but a computer ten times the price has a garbage 1MP camera?

Third, the model I bought comes without a ODD. This itself isn't a problem, I haven't used a CD or DVD in years. Lenovo laptops that do come with a ODD have a special little Lenovo ODD connector board that goes between the motherboard and a standard ODD drives SATA/power connector. This laptop didn't include that part which means that I can't use the empty ODD drive space for a SSD or a harddrive (with those standard ODD HDD cases). The part isn't even a standard Lenovo part, you need a "special" one for the exact laptop model which makes it hard to get on epray and sites like that. I've seen them for other models but not for mine.

Absolutely fantastic computer. Performance is great, build quility is impeccable, and the keyboard feels solid and has good travel. I also get a solid 9-10 hours of battery life out of it, which is crazy for me. I was getting 2-3 hours at most out of my T430 before this. My one regret is not getting the model with the trackpoint, but I couldn't find that in higher than HD resolution.

This is a pretty common problems with laptops and laptop makers need to solve this.

Lithium batteries tend to degrade the most when they are fed power while fully charged. Also being empty or near empty degrades them. A cellphone battery will last longer if you charge it at 10% and take it off the charger at 90%. Leaving it in the charger for hours and hours at 100% will degrade the battery over time. This translates into a problem with laptops because we tend to just leave those with the power connector plugged in all the time. There really isn't that much of an alternative either, mine lasts perhaps 2-3 hours or something in that range. Some laptops last longer but there's no normal use all day laptop so we (well, I anyway) tend to have them plugged in pretty much always. This actually wears out the battery over time. But for normal people, what's the alternative? Plug the laptop cable in and out every few hours? Using a timer on the charger that cuts and releases power every few hours? Not sure if there is a good solution but those who make laptops could probably solve it.
>>
>>60619508
>fed power while fully charged

X230T for werk (too lazy to do the keyboard swap as I'm not sure if the frontplate of the T line applies the same logic as the regular line in terms of compat), two Lenovo six cells give me a decent day. I've never had to charge on a typical 9-5. The IPS panel is a piece of shit relative to the X240 stock IPS. It's good enough as a shitdows machine and has lasted without any hardware problems after continuous use for years now.

The TN panel has very poor view angles, the bulldozer cpu on it drains the battery in couple of hours and it's very bulky. It has a quadcore CPU, 8 GBs of ram and a SSD (which I bought and added myself) so it's more than enough for programming. I just wish it was a bit lighter and could last a day without recharging.

there is form and then there is function

that battery protrusion contains valuable electrons that keep the machine running for longer away from AC current.... its just not a design decision although i respect HP for making something ugly than something that breaks

lets just agree apple ruined aesthetics for everyone - you are either a spaceship missing features or an ugly utilitarian.... not much in between these days

Hi /g/, greedy fag here searching for the ideal laptop.

I have a fully loaded XPS 15 9560 but Im thinking of returning it for a Gigabyte Aero 15 instead. Reasons include:

-Better GPU
-1080p instead of 4k for performance reasons
-XPS screen looks good for still images but ghosts like fuck
-Keyboard is kind of 'off'. Feels mushy and slippery kind of... Hard to explain. Sometimes you'll press the space bar and it wont activate, as it needs to be pressed slightly past the actuation point

QUESTION: Is going back to 1080p going to suck dick for a 15.6" laptop?

And are there any possible issues I'm overlooking? Or should I just be happy with my xps 15?

XPS 15 9560 FHD, I love it to bits

>>60633238
FHD won't suck dick at that size, I think it's the more sensible alternative for XPS (matte, more battery).

XPS 1080p was the better choice for me overall (if you get a good XPS thanks to hit or miss QC, but you should already know that).

I prefer the XPS aesthetics way more (I hated how the Gigabyte logo looked) and battery seems to last more compared to Aero which makes sense since the Aero has a smaller battery and a higher powered GPU.

Screen looks better in the XPS but the Aero has less ghosting. Although FHD has less ghosting compared to QHD.

Maybe the smaller travel distance of the keyboard is what you are referring to? I got used to it eventually but can be a bit odd at the beginning.

thinkpad t420BLAZEITFAGGOT

i had a macbook through college that just died last year (made it 6 years with very few issues) and got this as a replacement for like 150 dollars on ebay. the battery life is shit even after buying a replacement off amazon (yes i know that was a risky purchase), but its not really an issue since i just use it at home on the couch and can have it plugged in at all times. for the price, i'm very very happy with it, literally almost 10x cheaper than my macbook and preforms about the same
>>
>>60609276
What's your laptop, senpai?
HP Chromebook 11 (G1)

>Are you happy with it?
Yes, overall. Keyboard is good, trackpad is much better than some other laptops around the same price range, it has a comfy 11" IPS display, and the speakers are surprisingly good, despite the fact that they're hidden. The battery life's alright. I get about 5 or 6 hours. I never liked the microUSB charging and the fact that all of the ports and jacks are on the left side seems bogus.
Performance wise, it's only just now starting to show its age. It was never a powerhouse or anything but it's only just now starting to freeze and shut down unexpectedly. It's still being updated, though, which is cool.

If you see this simple reporting of facts as some sort of misguided bragging then you might have emotional issues.

I'm genuinely considering making myself a laptop with a Raspberry Pi 3, some cheap display on ali, and a power bank.

Thinkpad T460 owned by my employer - it's fine overall, but it's slower than the $600 desktop it replaced, and the Thinkpad probably cost $1000.
