I installed elementaryos, and I tried installing AMD proprietary drivers so I could use the Vulkan SDK, but for some reason DKMS mysteriously commits stupid and the installation fails. Is there a known fix for this? My card is an HD 7850, which I'm fairly certain is supported.

Why are the colors for this x265 vid fucked in windowed mode but fine when any scaling is done? Vid also breaks when moved from one monitor to the other. Using the latest mpc-hc, madvr, and GPU drivers.

Hi guys! I was trying to tune SMB when I noticed that I have low write speed on a disk that it had not that speed. Sorry for my enghlish.

I tried some dd test and all gave me around 15MB/s when googling said I should be able to hit 70-80 with no problem.

May I be helped with which test or checks should I do to know why is behaving that way? I already discarded cable to the disk (ethernet and converter) and bad SMB performance. I'm pretty sure is the disk itself but I don't know how should I keep researching.

I can no longer start certain programs via the start menu search on Windows 10. Normally I just press the windows key, type the program name for a bit (for example Keepass, cmd), and press enter which should start it. But now it finds the program just fine but I can't start it from that view. If I search for it in that folder view that you get in the start menu I can start it just fine. And some programs do start by searching for it, like Steam, OBS, battle.net, teamspeak. I don't recall changing any significant settings, aside from creating a system restore and installing AMD drivers, which these specific drivers didn't introduce this problem before. I don't use anything that changes the explorer or anything.
What could've caused this?

which disk do I keep, /g/uys?

disk #1 is newer but had a current pending sector count SMART warning a week ago, which I cleared overwriting the drive with all zeroes.

disk #2 is older and has way more power on counts and power on hours, but has never given me any errors.

i will be using one of them as external USB3 drives for my NUC server that I keep running 24/7, mainly for storing movies that i stream from other places on my network and that sort of crap, nothing too intensive.

I just installed Linux Mint. I had some issues installing the native drivers for nVidia and my wifi card but after copypasting a few million commands everything seems to be working fine. I have a major annoyance though, the default font is absolutely horrible. Can you recommend me some decent fonts?

Halp, what's a good program to rip subtitles from hardsubbed videos?
I tried SubRip and AviSubDetector.
The first is quite clunky and difficul to setup imo, I can't adjust the "subtitle area" properly because the program doesn't let me.
The second is a bit better, but is only useful to extract the timing.
As ignorant as I am, I think it should be a relative simple task to create a neural network that does this, but apparently it isn't.
Have you any suggestion?

Why is the icon to toggle location input disabled on my Linux Mint? The light interface is form a random tutorial I found online, the dark as my soul one is what I actually see. As you can see the pencil icon to change location input is missing.

Connect to interweb and download Windows 10 Accessibility Upgrade

same performance, same cost. Go for either unless your monitor supports either freesync or g-sync, then go with the relevant card maker that can use that feature. If you don't have a monitor that does, but are thinking of getting one, go AMD as freesync is cheaper. Otherwise it literally doesn't matter, both are good cards. Look for specials.

So my computer takes anywhere from 40 seconds to 5 mins to boot. Also when I load games the first map or level takes forever to load then the rest load in a few seconds. I'm running everything off an hdd. Not sure why everything varies so much.

You misunderstand. Daz literally is only used for the 5 mins of activating the upgrade. Once it's upgraded, a real, legit digital license will be generated when you upgrade to Win10. No more DAZ needed ever, your Win 10 is now showing as legit, you have all features for the upgraded type, can have fast boot, and even can log in with your Microsoft Account so you will always have that license associated with it, so you never have to use Daz for that machine again.

Yes, HDDs have moving parts to read files. If your disk is highly fragmented it has to move a lot which is a lot slower than an SSD.

I haven't had any issues with any of the motherboards I've worked on. If it has a special feature, it usually can be disabled in BIOS/UEFI settings. Otherwise, make sure you're using version 2.2.2, make sure you disable call-to-home services, disable internet access before and during the activation, and then go straight to the upgrade once it's activated. It's never failed for me.

I still think I would at least need to reinstall W10 as UEFI with the disk using GPT after upgrading. Daz might work with UEFI with MBR though. Nevertheless, with how easy KMSPico is and how cheaply the keys can be bought from 3rd party sources nowadays, I don't see much point in going trough W7 first. Especially since those Windows installations are almost exclusively for gaming, with Linux being my main OS.

It's best to reinstall from scratch, yeah. Once it's on the second restart, I never really let it finish the upgrade. I just do a clean install, deleting the existing partition right away. Still works as the hardware fingerprint was done beforehand.
It doesn't matter which OS version you use beforehand, I've just got a blank Win7 setup image on a USB that's minified and altered to work with current hardware. It's just a matter of speed and personally choice.

Used the HDD from my old desktop, everything connected correctly, no peripherals beside keyboard and mouse.

Why is windows failing to start? Loads up until about a second into the windows logo animation, then says windows failed to launch. I've run the automated repair and system restore but neither worked.

why do you need to OC?
if you aren't sure on how to do it, it's usually best not to do it yourself unless:
a) you have someone in person as a guide
b) you aren't doing it on your main pc, only a spare that you don't mind killing accidentally.

For testing if it's stable, pick a program to stress the CPU, AIDA64, Prime95, IntelBurnTest are common, and pick a program for monitoring temperatures etc, HWiNFO64 is good.

depends what you're doing and if the CPU was the original bottleneck in it. If it's gaming, but you have an older GPU, the CPU isn't likely to be the bottleneck. If you have a good GPU, plenty of RAM and running on an SSD, and the only thing holding you back is the CPU, sure go for gold, it's likely going to help and actually be noticeable.

Ran into a strange problem using my surface pro 3.

All of a sudden chrome would close, no crash message or anything. Opened it again and it closed agian.

Then about 35 task manager windows opened one after the other. I tried closing them but they seemed bottomless. At this point my computer was slow as fuck, even the mouse motion. Basically, I have a big set of questions and answers. Here is an example, similar to what I want to work on:

So, basically, ALL questions end with a "?". I want to separate questions and answers in a dictionary or something like that. But generally, the questions and answers go for more than one line. So, for example, I want to save as:

It isn't.

The problem is, you didn't add a newline.

When you do printf("aaa"), it won't be printed to the screen until you do a \n like so:

printf("%c\n");

The computer adds everything you want to print to a buffer, then when a newline (\n) is detected, it will print it all at once.

it takes the input text and splits it by two newlines.
so you get each answer and question together as a string in an array.
then loop through it and split it by questionmark (plus newline to remove it, any other language might handle this different than JS).
first part is the question, second is the answer.

How familiar should I be with a command prompt in a world where windows 10 is the dominant OS? I really don't know much about it at all.

Im having some trouble booting windows 7 from a usb. Im using windows 10 right now. I used rufus to format it then put a 7 iso on there.
It shows up in the boot menu but if i select it i just get a blank screen and nothing happens. Waited 10 minutes or so just to make sure it wasnt being a slow bitch but no dice.
I ran the windows 7 iso in a vm so i know it works.
