I installed elementaryos, and I tried installing AMD proprietary drivers so I could use the Vulkan SDK, but for some reason DKMS mysteriously commits stupid and the installation fails. Is there a known fix for this? My card is an HD 7850, which I'm fairly certain is supported.

Hi guys! I was trying to tune SMB when I noticed that I have low write speed on a disk that it had not that speed. Sorry for my enghlish.

I tried some dd test and all gave me around 15MB/s when googling said I should be able to hit 70-80 with no problem.

May I be helped with which test or checks should I do to know why is behaving that way? I already discarded cable to the disk (ethernet and converter) and bad SMB performance. I'm pretty sure is the disk itself but I don't know how should I keep researching.

Thanks for taking your time, guys.

I can no longer start certain programs via the start menu search on Windows 10. Normally I just press the windows key, type the program name for a bit (for example Keepass, cmd), and press enter which should start it. But now it finds the program just fine but I can't start it from that view. If I search for it in that folder view that you get in the start menu I can start it just fine. And some programs do start by searching for it, like Steam, OBS, battle.net, teamspeak. I don't recall changing any significant settings, aside from creating a system restore and installing AMD drivers, which these specific drivers didn't introduce this problem before. I don't use anything that changes the explorer or anything.
What could've caused this?

which disk do I keep, /g/uys?

disk #1 is newer but had a current pending sector count SMART warning a week ago, which I cleared overwriting the drive with all zeroes.

disk #2 is older and has way more power on counts and power on hours, but has never given me any errors.

Halp, what's a good program to rip subtitles from hardsubbed videos?
I tried SubRip and AviSubDetector.
The first is quite clunky and difficul to setup imo, I can't adjust the "subtitle area" properly because the program doesn't let me.
The second is a bit better, but is only useful to extract the timing.
As ignorant as I am, I think it should be a relative simple task to create a neural network that does this, but apparently it isn't.
Have you any suggestion?

Does this watermark only exist on the desktop or will you also see it on other windows (i.e. Firefox or a game)

You can change the wallpaper pretty easily btw, but im sure you already know
>>
>>60607430
Install fresh Win7
Use Windows Loader by Daz 2.2.2 to activate
Connect to interweb and download Windows 10 Accessibility Upgrade
Once the PC restarts at least once, your hardware fingerprint should be already loaded into their activation server, meaning even if the upgrade fails, just fresh install Win 10 and it'll auto activate, legit copy, digital license.

It overlays everything, which is sometimes annoying. Not that I notice it too much while gaming, but I probably couldn't stand it when watching videos fullscreen.

>>60607480
Already done that once, too much of a hassle. Of course I also feel a bit bad about abusing the Accessibility Upgrade. UEFI boot with fastboot options is nice to have too, something which Daz loader can't handle as far as I know.
>>
>>60607261
Sorry, I said that badly, I can select the area, but the spacing between the first and second line on the subs gives me problems, I can't adjust it as I want because the number doesn't go high enough for my video, it stops at 40, or semething like that, I don't remember.
>>
>>60607508
same performance, same cost. Go for either unless your monitor supports either freesync or g-sync, then go with the relevant card maker that can use that feature. If you don't have a monitor that does, but are thinking of getting one, go AMD as freesync is cheaper. Otherwise it literally doesn't matter, both are good cards. Look for specials.
>>
So my computer takes anywhere from 40 seconds to 5 mins to boot. Also when I load games the first map or level takes forever to load then the rest load in a few seconds. I'm running everything off an hdd. Not sure why everything varies so much.
>>
>>60607508
RX 580 if you care about using open source drivers and want the least painful update experience. GTX 1060 usually performs a bit better though using the closed source drivers.
>>
>>60607542
What's your question?
>>
>>60607516
You misunderstand. Daz literally is only used for the 5 mins of activating the upgrade. Once it's upgraded, a real, legit digital license will be generated when you upgrade to Win10. No more DAZ needed ever, your Win 10 is now showing as legit, you have all features for the upgraded type, can have fast boot, and even can log in with your Microsoft Account so you will always have that license associated with it, so you never have to use Daz for that machine again.

Why does it do this? Why is it so inconsistent? Should I get an ssd?
>>
>>60607571
Yes, HDDs have moving parts to read files. If your disk is highly fragmented it has to move a lot which is a lot slower than an SSD.
You should have gotten an SSD 5 years ago already.
>>
>>60607542
Get a SSD for your system, upgrade the amount of RAM in the system and check your HDD health with something like CrystalDiskInfo.
>>
>>60607542
Some programs are just really inconsistent in startup times. You should disable most of them anyway, except the ones you actually want to use at startup.

>mobo has an antipiracy thing, DAZ wont work
I haven't had any issues with any of the motherboards I've worked on. If it has a special feature, it usually can be disabled in BIOS/UEFI settings. Otherwise, make sure you're using version 2.2.2, make sure you disable call-to-home services, disable internet access before and during the activation, and then go straight to the upgrade once it's activated. It's never failed for me.

I still think I would at least need to reinstall W10 as UEFI with the disk using GPT after upgrading. Daz might work with UEFI with MBR though. Nevertheless, with how easy KMSPico is and how cheaply the keys can be bought from 3rd party sources nowadays, I don't see much point in going trough W7 first. Especially since those Windows installations are almost exclusively for gaming, with Linux being my main OS.

It's best to reinstall from scratch, yeah. Once it's on the second restart, I never really let it finish the upgrade. I just do a clean install, deleting the existing partition right away. Still works as the hardware fingerprint was done beforehand.
It doesn't matter which OS version you use beforehand, I've just got a blank Win7 setup image on a USB that's minified and altered to work with current hardware. It's just a matter of speed and personally choice.

shows the working out process. It's just multiplying it by the ratio you find with the side you already know to scale up by.

So in this case, it's like:
900 Ć· 1080 = 0.8333...
Then multiply the ratio with the other one:
2560 x 0.8333... = 2133.333...

>>60608096
the other one might cost money, this one is free if you want to try it. I just haven't tried this one.

what do i need to download to go about OC-ing my cpu?
>>
>>60608158
why do you need to OC?
if you aren't sure on how to do it, it's usually best not to do it yourself unless:
a) you have someone in person as a guide
b) you aren't doing it on your main pc, only a spare that you don't mind killing accidentally.
>>
>>60608158
For doing the actual overclock, nothing, you do it through bios setup.

For testing if it's stable, pick a program to stress the CPU, AIDA64, Prime95, IntelBurnTest are common, and pick a program for monitoring temperatures etc, HWiNFO64 is good.
>>
>>60608181

It's alright if you want to see the current temp, but other monitoring tools keep check of max and min over the entire time monitoring usually. Good for keeping an eye on spikes.

>>
>>60608278
Speccy usually uses the mobo's CPU temperature sensor sitting under the socket, it's better to use the readings from the CPU die.

4GHz is easy on a 3570K.
>>
>>60608396
>4GHz is easy on a 3570K.
should i go higher then?
will OC-ing to 4.0 even make a difference?
>>
>>60608419
depends what you're doing and if the CPU was the original bottleneck in it. If it's gaming, but you have an older GPU, the CPU isn't likely to be the bottleneck. If you have a good GPU, plenty of RAM and running on an SSD, and the only thing holding you back is the CPU, sure go for gold, it's likely going to help and actually be noticeable.
>>
>>60608126
tried using the paragon program but didn't work, I'll probably use the easyre one you have to pay for
>>
>>60608419
Sure, I'd expect somewhere between 4.3-4.5 to be achievable with your cooler.

At 4 you'd be ~10% faster than stock for CPU bound workloads. For things like gaming you'd probably be GPU limited unless you've got a really high end newish one, so gains are smaller, maybe even zero
>>
>>60608474
bummer to hear that mate. I'm sure there was one more option that actually injects generic drivers for newer chipsets. I'll keep looking around if you want to hold off from using the easyre yet. At least it's an option as backup.

Whatever's cheap is fine.

If possible with your displays don't go VGA, go HDMI/DVI/DisplayPort
>>

miracast can only be done if your pc is compatible (Intel WiDi 3.5 and above) but you can extend with it, not just duplicate.

For a USB adapter, I'd avoid the absolute cheapest models, since they're usually quite terrible. But if it states it can output with HDMI and even up to 4K, and has a reputable brand name, should be good to go with.

>>
>>60609309
you could try balancing it on the tip of your nose.
>>
>>60609340
the xeon would be a slight improvement in speed. the SSD is likely to bring the biggest difference.
but also, over time you'll slowly create your optimal development environment, which might result in your performance needing to be improved over time due to the programs you're choosing to use, how much you run at the same time, how many tabs of chrome/firefox you keep open or what you have running in the background. There's also the way you'll want your system actually setup physically. If you have a single monitor at the moment, I can assure you getting a second will be a huge improvement for productivity. You'll never turn back. And if the multi-monitor bug sets in deeply, you might slowly increase how many you have, increasing the hardware requirements you need to drive the extra displays and also changing how much you're running at the same time, pushing things further. Things slowly evolve over time, so just have fun with it and upgrade when you actually feel the need. Enjoy the journey!

min 16gb RAM, SSD for sure (large IDEs like android studio or visual studio take forever to load from HDD, compare 45 seconds to 18 minutes), CPU with large cache if you can afford the cash. but if u upgrade the CPU, you'll probably need to upgrade the motherboard too.

SSD would be the most bang for your buck in performance boost
second is more RAM
3rd is CPU/mobo

I'd simply like to hold you up for one short while. What you're proclaiming to be Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I have lately taken to calling it, GNU with Linux. Linux isn't an operating setup on its own, but really another free piece of a fully functioning GNU setup made of service by the GNU core libraries, terminal facilities and essential setup components completing a full OS.

There are many holders run a subspecies of the true setup everyday, but do not know. Because of a strange series of situations, the version of GNU that is being utilized these days is often called "Linux", and many of its holders are not aware that it is basically the GNU setup, made by GNU.

There truly is a Linux, and they are using it, but it is simply a part of the setup they use. Linux is really the core, the program in the setup that distributes the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The core is a necessary part of an operating setup, but relies on the rest of the system; it is only operational in the shadow of a complete operating setup. Linux is most commonly utilized in combination with the GNU operating setup, the whole setup is basically GNU with Linux added on, or GNU/Linux. Every one of the "Linux" releases are really releases of GNU/Linux.

they are similar

a library is a set of pre-written classes & functions for a programming langauge that is designed to be widely implemented for a variety of applications

an API is a set of classes and functions that allows you to interface with another system, this system sometimes not actually being written in that language. for example, openweather API (you CAN google that) offers a set of functions that will make queries on their constantly-running database that will return weather information based on your queries. you can interface with this system using any language you want, so lang as you can make HTTP requests to the system

that's a broad definition. expect to see a bunch of socially maladjusted neckbeards angrily say that this is completely wrong and play hairsplitting olympics to desperately appear to all the other anonymous faggots like they are in fact king of this sad digital jungle

Though you tend to have more choices for cheap wifi only devices on the android side compared to apple. Hello everyone!
I'm a complete retard(not only on this subject) with regular expressions, and am trying to fit some text in a way I want. I'm using Python.
Basically, I have a big set of questions and answers. Here is an example, similar to what I want to work on:

Do you suck dicks?
Yes, I do!

Wanna suck mine?
Nope.

So, basically, ALL questions end with a "?". I want to separate questions and answers in a dictionary or something like that. But generally, the questions and answers go for more than one line. So, for example, I want to save as:
>{question:" Do you suck dicks?", answer: "Yes, I do!"}
Anyone know how I could deal with it? Do I really have RegEx as my only solution?

How are RMAs supposed to work when Amazon is involved and the manufacturer insists on processing the RMA through the retailer that sold you the product?

I've had to do this twice so far, and both times I explained very clearly to the Amazon customer support rep that this was a RMA, according to the manufacturer's instructions, they authorize a return, and then refund what I paid minus a restocking fee. I didn't complain too much since in the couple years since I got the GPU prices had gone down and I was able to get a small upgrade with the money rather than the exact part I was replacing, but still strikes me that this is probably not how the process was supposed to work, so what was I supposed to do here?

are the questions with answers separated by two newlines like in your examples?
as in do you have line by line or one large text with them?
then I'd split those first by the two newlines, loop over the results and split by the question mark.

The problem is that this is a gigantic text file with not only questions and answers, but a lot of other stuff too. So, in my head, I believe I have to: grab everything from before the "?" until it grabs the whole question, and grab everything from after the "?" until I gets to the stopping point from the question code.

>but a lot of other stuff too
This will be your largest problem. Regex cannot determine whether or not something is a question, it is impossible to do so.

You are interested in NLP (natural language processing), which should be able to determine with relative accuracy as to whether or not a given statement is a question, an answer, or something else.
>>
>>60612882
I know what is a question because they're the only sentences with question marks. I can't deal with "could" or "couldn't" be a question, it has to be 100% sure. Can NLP do it?
>>
>>60612882
Let me rephrase -- regex can tell you if a statement is a question, assuming it has a question mark. (However, it cannot detect rhetorical questions.)

But your main problem will be determining what are true questions and what are answers -- for that, you will need NLP.
>>
>>60612866
if that's your input then split by two newlines and then by question mark, no need for regex.
>>
>>60612904
I don't know much about NLP, but I do know it's not an exact science. However, it's the best chance you have at solving the problem.
>>
>>60612911
Can't I make two functions, one that gets what's before the question mark, and other that gets what's after, and the part where they break will be the end of the answer and the start of the new question?
>>
>>60612836
Thanks mate
>>
>>60612946
Yeah, you can.

I'm assuming you're dealing with real world data. If you're dealing with real world data it will almost certainly give you bad results. If you're doing a hw assignment, it sohuld be fine.

What gate is this? "Nor"?
>>
printf("gimme char");
char a = getchar();
printf("%c", a);

why is getchar running before printf?
>>
What are some common everyday tasks I should consider automating?
>>
>>60613284
getchar() receives the character from keyboard input, then stores it in a variable "a".

printf prints the character a to the screen.
>>
>>60613322
but in the code, the expected outcome is for the first printf to ask for a character, then getchar asks for it.
but the output of the code asks for the character, and when the user inputs one, it then prints both printf's one after the other.

getchar is, for some reason, the first thing to be called.
>>
>>60613265
NAND. Only when both transistors conduct (input 1 1) is the output 0.
>>
>>60613284
>>60613355
works for me
might be your terminal
try "gimme char\n"
>>
>>60613355
It isn't.

The problem is, you didn't add a newline.

When you do printf("aaa"), it won't be printed to the screen until you do a \n like so:

printf("%c\n");

The computer adds everything you want to print to a buffer, then when a newline (\n) is detected, it will print it all at once.
>>
>>60613398
>>60613355
>>60613284
So, you'll watn this:

printf("gimme char\n");
char a = getchar();
printf("\n%c\n", a);

>>60613414
my current code is now:
printf("Enter a character.\n");
char a = getchar();
printf("\n%c\n", a);

and it still calls getchar() before any of the printf's
>>
>>60613514
try:

char a;
printf("Enter a character.\n");
a = getchar();
printf("\n%c\n", a);

Also, make sure you compile it and run the newly created file.

>>
>>60613538
nah same problem.
i guess it's my compiler/terminal? i'm using mingw with notepad++'s default terminal.
>>
>>60613553
it takes the input text and splits it by two newlines.
so you get each answer and question together as a string in an array.
then loop through it and split it by questionmark (plus newline to remove it, any other language might handle this different than JS).
first part is the question, second is the answer.

an object of it gets created and put into an array.
>>
>>60613553
>>60613597

Also, it doesn't depend on exact one paragraph for question, one for an answer. It broke when I put some longer questions and answers.
