Flowblade, shotcut, kdenlive, davinci resolve (surely you know what the last one is). Flowblade I've liked over shotcut, but it doesn't work in Solus which I've taken to using lately. Davinci resolve apparently should work like it does on any other OS, but I have never had a successful installation of it on any distro.

Could a kind anon try installing flowblade (py file) from source and/or davinci resolve (sh file) on their GNU+Linux distro?

I remember hearing about some sort of GPU run-through for Linux where you use one GPU exclusively for Linux and another exclusively for a Windows virtual PC, where can I find out more about this?

Does this work with two separate video cards rather than only a card and integrated graphics?

How does that work when it comes to adaptive refresh rates like Freesync? Can I have Freesync running in the VM and it successfully eliminate screen tearing?

Does the Linux GPU need to support Freesync for it you to get the benefit of Freesync in the VM?

My 6 year old laptop could barely run a browser when I had Windows 7 installed on it.

After lots of research, I decided to replace it with GNU/Linux fully. I downloaded Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Fast forward 3 months, I am running Linux Mint XFCE in a virtual machine on Antergos XFCE, and the virtual machine is running flawlessly.

I can have 3 programs open, while using a virtual machine to torrent and browse the internet with zero issues.

Look, I understand how Windows is good for programs like CAD, Photoshop, and gaming, but nothing compares to the feel you get from using GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>60604057
When there is a distro specially for a DE it usually gets lots additional stuff like patches, theming, etc it not really a good idea to install multiple DEs unless you really know what you do, but you can install as much as WMs you want.

Okay, I've tried about three times but I can't get Lubuntu to install. It's the latest build (17.04, I think) and everything goes fine until a certain point where it just says:

The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB bootloader, the installed system will not boot.

I am getting a bit frustrated here. I checked the ISO, and it's ok, so, what could it be?

I did mount the partitions correctly; the default EPS (I forgot the actual term) partition size was around 579 MB.

Just finished installing Gentoo on my x60t. Went from Parabola to the mustard race in only a few hours. First time working with Gentoo too. Honestly was really straightforward. Just a bit time consuming. Glancing at the handbook a few times was all I needed. Course I only barely configured the kernel from what the defaults were but I'll do that after I've messed around with it a bit more. Really liking portage.

DEs are like Ubuntu or Windows, but they take up a lot of resources (storage and RAM). Window managers are just that, they manage windows. You will need a separate program for everything (music, file manager, terminal, etc.). This is great because it follows the UNIX philosophy but also puts more control in the hands of the user. This is bad if you don't like configuring things.
Openbox+tint2 are a good combination, which I personally use.

Arch isn't minimalist.

"It has never been a minimalist distribution. Splitting packages is rare compared to other distributions, and dependencies aren't made optional whenever possible."

"It has also never been a distribution offering much user freedom / choice compared to Gentoo and even Debian. There are very few cases where there are multiple packages offering different configurations of the same project. There's no equivalent to update-alternatives or the comparable uses of USE flags. Changing /bin/sh from Bash will be broken, as will changing the python symlink to point to python2 instead of python3 even though this works on some other distributions. "Arch is the opposite of a user-centric freedom. The opinion of users has no weight here. Only the developers have an opinion, and there aren't voting systems as there are in Debian. Technical decisions are made based on merit via consensus among the developers, not popularity."

"Arch has never been minimalist... a Linux kernel with every module available and every feature enabled at least when there's no non-bloat related cost, feature-packed/complex GNU tools, nearly all optional features enabled across all the packages, etc."

"It has always used significantly more disk space and a measurable amount of additional memory than Debian and especially Gentoo as a consequence of keeping things simple (again, from a development perspective)."

Best distros for GNOME?

I hate Fedora's release cycle.
I don't like Arch or AUR.
OpenSUSE installs SO MUCH shit. 4 shells, two network managers etc. I've tried ticking almost everything off but it resulted with a system without Zypper or Yast (even though I had chosen to install them)
Ubuntu is way too bloated and PPA's are stupid
>>
>>60606095
Large scale projects will benefit immensely from programs like Eclipse or Notepad++ but you should also have a good lightweight (specifically text based) editor for working remotely or otherwise. I use vim with a lot of customization and once you've got the navigation down, it's insanely fast for typing.

You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You're saying i should keep my regular stuff on kubuntu? and leave windows only for games?
>>
>>60609000
i gave points for using regular things on kubuntu

Does pacman have a system similar to apt-pinning?

Using manjaro and really enjoy it, but I'd like to get the most recent versions of the nvidia driver so I can test a few bugs I've been having, but not at the expense of using the testing repository

What type of encryption is used when i choose to encrypt my disk? Using fedora if that matters. Also i chose to encrypt my home folder too, so does that mean youd need two passwords to access my home folder? I dont get it since you could just boot with the encryption password then change the root password and get into the user folders

It's not open source fault that the developers were that lazy, probably some idiotic code monkey.

Hi /fglt/, winfag about to switch here, what is this I have heard about compiling a program to your CPU for extra performance?
>>
>>60609989
pure horror, people have no idea how fucking large a repo can get when they push and delete wallpapers and binaries all the time
>>
>>60610039
You could get a performance boost by tailoring it to your processor, but results will vary. Usually it's fine to use the precompiled binaries from the repos unless there is a feature you really don't want it to come with.

If you compile certain programs optimized for your processor, you can get sometimes considerable speed increase.

These are usually cryptography, encoder/decoder, 3D and similar programs which have to do a lot of math.
>>
>>60610144
what programs would you suggest compiling to test if i can get gains? i have an 8 core fx8350 and am curious about getting those double speed gains

systemD (système Diable) is free but doesnt follow a really old standard. Its only available for linux so if you develope for it you limit yourself to linux (see gnome 3 how it was dependant on systemd for a while). Because it does so much its also a securitytt concern.

The "testing" repository is just Arch stable.
>>
>>60610464
yeah, I know that. I just don't really want to use arch stable/manjaro testing for drivers.

I find it too hard to keep things stable on my desktop, even though I use arch on my laptop.
>>
>>60608001
Because to me it is the most intuitive and easy to use wm with sane defaults. I just find it very comfortable.

Also, I'm used to it by now.

In part, its also a realtime kernel and that brings in other performance options as well as bfq.
