In like 2010 I was supposed bring some stuff from the office down to an old server room in the basement of the company I worked at.

The moment I turned on the light switch was quite a magical one because the whole place was filled with old computers from the late 80's, all connected, spider webs everywhere but shit's functional and preserved, like a time capsule. Even the computer chairs were there. EVERYTHING.
The place even smelled like old computers.
It probably sounds autistic but I still have goosebumps. It certainly was something special.
Sadly the place got teared down years after I left and even before that they fagged around about giving me one or two 486 or 386 machines.

Anyways, I love time capsules so fucking much, especially computer related ones.

Saw this on Ebay a couple weeks ago.

Some 286 clone that was sitting in some abandoned warehouse for over two decades.
Original packaging.

The seller (of course) didn't have a fucking clue and shat all over the ad the usual "SUPER RARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER OLD RETRO COMPUTER!!!!!! ONE IN A LIFETIME CHANCE!!!! SUPER COOL!!!!!! RARE!!!!! and wanted like $500 for it.

Finding old shit and flipping it is one thing, knowing literally nothing about it and be a faggot is something else.

As soon as you get in there, you are going to find hundreds of broken laws and building regulations that need to be updated. And, as soon as you know about them, you are legally abided to fix them or lose the property.

It's better just to let it fall down on its own.

Only the basement levels are abandoned. At the end of the video, one of the guys takes the elevator up to the first floor and he sees it is an active hospital. Maybe the lower levels were abandoned because there was water damage.

Also a lot of hospitals have to close down or downsize because poor people w/ no health insurance just use the ER and then never pay their hospital bills

I can't remember exactly which model it was...

Also, don't know what that original purpose of that room exactly was. It looked more like a schooling room with a dozen similar workstations and a couple random other computers.
They just called it "server room" because they had their recent server near the door in a rack.

How the FUCK is it not possible IF those fucking forms are necessary to just let the receiving end fill out the forms if the university is ~too busy~ to spend time on this?

The problem with this is that hard drives of that era (80's, early 90's) are getting rarer and rarer. A disk that has only seen 10,000 hours of use and then stored for 20 years is rare as rockinghorse shit. The thought of disks of that era getting ragefucked with a clawhammer makes me cringe.
>>
>>60580695
Gee, I wonder why companies do the same.
Recycling old hardware is usually barely profitable (if at all) so no one bothers because that's just a waste of energy.
>>
>>60576506
i wonder why this particular computer cannot afford any downtime
>>
>>60580751
Well and now they just rust in moist cellars until they get hammered with the pc casing around them a couple years later. Better rescue most of it and sacrifice the HDD than letting the whole thing get mauled.

>>60580761
I'd rather say it is fucking incompetence and ignoring opportunities since no one expects money behind it because of said incompetence and fucked priorities.
There are tons of recycling companies that make good money with this shit. Even one-guy companies. They're just fucking lazy when it comes to this (and a lot of other money sinks).
>>

When the alternative is the entire machine gets trashed, a destroyed hard drive is the lesser evil.

You seem to suffer from this one condition almost all of the young STEM students suffer from - you think you can optimize everything. Which is impossible in large structures and often shouldn't be done even when available because splitting hairs can be dangerous for business.
>There are tons of recycling companies that make good money with this shit

Tons of hipster ride these and when I went to a bike auction last year, it came CLOSE to a mass brawl of about two dozen university faggots who wanted to get the only peugeot bike available there. of course only one guy could have it and when he got it, he got flocked by a mob with offers and two chicks were crying over it.

This is why you steal that shit.

My old school's robotics club met in a server room, with shelves packed to the brim with Dell shitboxes but also more importantly, tons and tons of boxes full of PCI, ISA and AGP cards. Literally over the span of a month I would just sneak into the back of the room while the rest of the team was working on something, and stuff as many cards as I could fit into my backpack.

Literally 30+ cards total and nobody ever fucking noticed. So much good shit. Dual Voodoo 2s with SLI cable, Voodoo 3 3000, AWE64, Sound Blaster Pro 2.0, Geforce 256, Geforce 2 Ultra, Aureal Vortex2, much much more. Literally, at least $450 worth of cards. As a person working for a company that receives e-waste for recycling, I want to assure you anon, that anything particularly special is not destroyed.
We've gotten near mint SGI machines, old school TI computers, IBM PCAT's, and that stuff isn't just "well rip the metals and toss the rest". My boss is a fucking nerd and has a personal collection of the really special stuff. Not only does he have a pink Indigo 2 Extreme, he has a matching monitor, keyboard, mouse and a second set new in the fucking box.

Because for how much shit we get, its 99% shitty compaqs and emachines with nothing really special inside. Some older stuff maybe comes in but not much anymore. I see maybe 1 or 2 386/486 machines a month.
I don't feel bad ripping apart a crappy Pentium II machine, but if I see true retro hardware it gets moved to the side for assessment. Its worth more in resale than it is as scrap and the company knows it.
Of course of its not valuable and not special, even if it is really old cool stuff, it may be tossed or sold to a local nerd who shows up at the gate looking for old pcs
I had to tear down a pallet of Amiga 600's and felt so fucking bad when I found one that was in such good shape it looked near new, but it wasn't anything worth keeping around.

This is how I got my dads birthday present a few years ago. An old Apple II kit, still worked for the most part. Bought a new HDD and battery, cleaned up the plastic and had a fake box made up at UPS. He was elated as an old mac fanboy

This is exactly what happens. The hospital I work at as a nursefag has about 25 percent of its beds shut down because it had been operating in such a deficit specifically because of the constant loss from the ER.
>>
>>60586092
I seriously doubt it. The hospital is breaking HIPPA laws by leaving all those patient records just sitting there abandoned in the basement, so that random people like the youtubers can easily flip through them. Why would they give anyone permission to expose that they are breaking the law? If they needed money, they could get 10x more than any of those youtubers could ever pay them to go down there just by selling some of that unused equipment
>>
>>60587253
You're assuming this hospital had some sort of online or intranet patient charting. And even if they did, it's unlikely the servers remain.

End-point PCs since Windows XP were part of a domain controller system that doesn't allow patient records to be saved to any one PC - the entire user account et al would be on a server that SHOULD not remain in the facility.

>>60587989
Oh believe me public hospitals get all kinds of government gibs me dats but it's not nearly enough to make a hospital turn a profit. The biggest issue is that people use the ER as a primary care provider because we can't demand any kind of up front payment. People wonder why healthcare is so expensive and blame it on the wages being payed to physicians and nurses. Well it's not that. At all. It's because we have to make some kind of money and there are some people out there that actually pay their bills. So the price is astronomical and because that percentage pays it, it keeps the doors open.
>>
>>60576617
Oh man, that kind of reminds me of this surplus place that used to be in my area. We had a lot of aerospace back in the day, and this place was just row upon row of incredible electronic and mechanical components from WWII up to about the '70s, including a lot of early computing stuff. It was a candy store for a hardware nerd like me.

Sadly it closed down a decade or so ago and I have no idea what happened to all the stuff, I hope it didn't all end up in a scrapyard.
>>
>>60578075
If that pic is the plant I'm thinking of, there's no radiation to worry about. They built the whole plant and then politics happened and it was never put into service, so there was never any fuel there or anything. The only dangerous thing there, aside from typical abandoned building stuff, is some active electrical equipment that they repurposed to handle power from an adjacent conventional power plant.
>>
>>60581634
The government doesn't pick up the tab, so the hospital generally eats the cost through inflating the billing to insurance companies.
That's why it costs so much to go to the hospital out of pocket, since they usually have deals cut with the insurance companies.

It's a backwards and fucked up way of providing care for everyone. Instead of just providing a level of care for everyone all the time, we force people to avoid the medical system as long as possible for fear of financial ruin, and by the time they *have* to go to the ER, they're much more damaged than if the problems had been caught early.

Insulin costs something like $1.5k/yr. A diabetic foot amputation costs upwards of $60k for the initial procedure, and at least that much in follow-up costs.
The only real problem is with the elderly. Should we spend hundreds of thousands, or even millions, on an 87 year old?

This is why CF/IDE bridges and SDcard/IDE bridges exist, so you can use modern storage on old machines.
>>
>>60600277
'80s stretches back to old Xebecs and hardcards.
>>
>>60600346
You can use XTIDE+CFIDE for anything with an ISA bus.
>>
>>60600360
Nice, honestly didn't know there was something that lived on 8-bit ISA rather than just IDE.
>>
>>60600260
>proving my point
why spend time and effort securing yourself from a group of idiots that does everything in their power to marginalize themselves and their shitty ideas on their own and feels proud of it

do us a favor and bleed out yourself, future generations will thank you

Hundreds, probably thousands of dollars just sitting inside there. If it's really abandoned I bet there is at least a box of old mechanical keyboards that are pretty much guaranteed ebay sales. If you live nearby you should try to buy it out.
>>
>>60600994
>pay tens of thousands of dollars for a dilapidated store that may or may not have a few hundred dollars worth of shitty off-brand ancient keyboards only hipsters want
Take it from someone who actually works in the antiques business:
No.

Anyone know much media with loads of this shit? All I can think of is Lain.

I have a T1960CS, looks exactly the same except it has a color screen. Surprised it still works since it spent a decade in a shed. Wish I could find it a good home.
>>

Thinkpads are robust motherfuckers.
>>
>>60601029
Who said anything about buying the actual store? You offer to clean it out. There's not-unlikely chance the person in charge of it will just give the shit to you if you approach them in the right way.
>>
>>60601578
"If you live nearby you should try to buy it out" strongly implied that to me. There's definitely no harm in doing what you're suggesting however.

You'd be surprised, though, that place looks like a typical hoarder shop. The dude would probably tell you to fuck off long before he parted with all of that.

What definition of abandoned are we going with?
>>
>>60602814
replace parts
you can't say "been working for 30 years" if it's a 2 year old replacement
but if it was just say, a replaced hdd, then it's still more or less the same computer

You overestimate local news. If it's not all new, it hasn't been replaced in 30 years. He hinted to the truth.

they did mention parts, though they weren't specific about what had been replaced

people really need to learn the difference between "old" and "broken"

It's honestly similar to what I mentioned in >>60596735 . Why hasn't Namie been repopulated or looted? Why hasn't Centralia?

It's sad, my family was from there but escaped with my grandparents. It's beautiful country, just... Beauty can't fight making a living.

They never used a key to turn the system on, not even PS/2 or PC/XT/AT machines did that.

Normal - Workstation use
Locked - Server use
Service - Installation/Diagnostic use

No. We shouldn't on anyone. Our life spans are so short that their all equivalent.

This. For the ones that don't pay the bill goes to collections and the amount lowers and lowers and lowers.

Having said that, I had undiagnosed celiac when I was a kid and doctors said I 'was fine' cause they couldn't find anything wrong. So my folks also said I was fine. I knew I wasn't fine and it sucked. Late puberty, no muscle development, allergic to fucking everything. I found out on my own what it was recently and I haven't seen one since. So, aside from broken bones etc, I think most mainstream doctors are arrogant shitheads.

Contracts. Company x agrees to take all the machines company Y is disposing of, for service charge Z per year. It doesn't matter if company Y disposes of 1 machine a year or 12000 a year, the recycling company will still receive the hardware, their service charge, and the ability to resell the hardware they WERE PAID to take.
