>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you don't want to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good; may have heat issues even at stock clocks
>R7/Xeon - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for LoL, dota2, rocket league, etc
>1050Ti at ~$105. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings for some games
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider only if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA)
>1070 - 1080p@144hz/1440p@100+hz
>1080 - 1080p@90-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings
>Freesync2 & Vega soon

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>Go mATX form factor for cheaper board+case
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>Computex in a few days, wait for it

That's terrible if true.

My 1600X is at around 40C with just light gaming while twitch is going and I'm posting on 4chan, and that's at 1040RPM.

Grats on your housefirelake though, I guess.

Why'd you get a Z270 board if you only have 2400MHz RAM? There are so many mistakes here.

>>60533727
You're embarrassing yourself.

1440p puts less load on the CPU, not more.
1080p means higher frame rates, means more draw call per second, means a faster running main game thread.
The 290 will be bottlenecked so fucking hard at 1080p by a G4560, let alone 1440p.

>>60533745
Shill site that recommends bad hardware because they're paid to.
Leads to really bad builds that makes no sense like a z170 + i3-6100 + single SR DIMM + 550w crappy PSU + 64GB SSD.
But worse is the particular brands/models they recommend and how reading their guides will leave you more clueless than you were before visiting them.

Just a recommendation for the OP here but for people who plan on building a cheap computer with a G4560 it might be worth aiming for the G4600 instead since it's using a better iGPU and isn't that much expensive than the G4560.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaby_Lake#Desktop_processors

But ONLY if you plan on only using the iGPU and not buy a GPU just to play Blizzard games and such. If you plan on buying a GPU anyway just go with the G4560.

What do you guys think about my build? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Mswj9W

I thought long and hard about which way to go about it in terms of hardware and decided to go the Ryzen route.. I will primarily be gaming, but I will also be doing some multitasking. Currently I have a 1600x900 60hz monitor which I will be switching out in the near future for a slightly better one, maybe 144hz or less to get a better experience on CS:GO, currently I play CS:GO, LoL, some crappy asian FPS games, but I am looking to play BF1, ArmA 3 DayZ, H1Z1, GTAV, Overwatch and some upcoming games later this year. Any recommendations with peripherals for FPS games and should I keep the mobo or go with a full size one? Will there be any issues if I keep the mobo that I chose in terms of upgrading?

Because no, pumping more money into a build doesn't make it better
List i5 7600k as outstanding build while the R5 builds are at best "Excellent" (worse)
List R7 1700 as Enthusiast which is better than 7700k's Exceptional, when the choice between those two depends entirely on the usage

There is no logical steps anymore. That was maybe true when intel was dominating and we had the same shit slightly more powerful the more money you pumped in, but when Intel & AMD have different advantage & disadvantages it's very stupid to believe these are some sort of increments you can do.

It's shit.

Nothing wrong with a mid-tower, even for cooling. It's the most popular type of case size for a reason.

I'm planning to get an RX 580 and a monitor but I'm having a hard time figuring out which. Is freesync useful for locked and stable 60fps? I'm guessing 1440p ultrawide is a bit much? I looked at a couple of benchmarks and while they definitely don't reach 60 maxed I have no idea how lowering the settings a bit would affect things. I've read a lot of people say 27" is ideal for 1440p, is that accurate or should I consider 24" or 32" as well? Thanks for any info.

I just obtained the case of an IBM PC 300 GL and I'm going to put new gaming hardware inside.

My main problems will be the cooling. I'm going to use an uATX board to have more place for fans. But once the case arrives I'm going to measure anything. Still I think watercooling would be impossible.

Any suggestions / hints?

Not really, just good luck? Are the standoffs for a uATX even going to line up with that case? IBM/Dell/etc have some weird proprietary bullshit going on in their cases sometimes, especially from shit back in the 1990s. Doubt you'd be able to fit a rad in there without serious modification so yeah, water is probably out of the question.

There's also some smaller rear exhaust coolers that the dell SFF PCs use like this one http://www.ebay.ie/itm/231616825089

logicalincrements used to be useful a few years ago when the landscape was much simpler. He's tried to compensate for this by adding several more tiers but really at this point it's just making it more complicated than it needs to be. At any given point in time there are only a handful of core components worth buying depending on what you're going to be doing.

Noobs would be better off just going off of pcpartpicker builds that can be retarded on occasion but more often than not make much more sense than going straight across a tier list on LI.

AMDGPU open source is better than Nvidia non-free in some cases, but a bit worse on average. Works fine, just not quite the performance on unpopular games.
On popular games, it can be way better. Like Fury X matching 1080 good.

I'm personally waiting for Vega and hoping those GPU virtualization features are on the consumer cards as well so GPU passthrough can be done on a single card.

Water cooling is more capable than air cooling. Why the hell do you think air cooled cars aren't a thing anymore? Almost every single car out there, excluding some exceptions designed from the 1930's to 1960's, have been water cooled.

On the upside, cooling performance is fantastic. On the downside, when you're done, it takes a while for the temperature to come back down because water doesn't transfer heat quickly.

get that over gtx 1080, considering you're building on a budget your wallet will thank you if
you avoid g-sync. Also consider sata ssd over nvme if you don't plan to do any specific task
that benefits from those high speeds, you will notice no difference otherwise.

If your budget allows both 3200mhz and r5 1600 go for it if going 3200mhz forces you to
a lower ryzen then stay at 2400mhz.
I personally think it's worth the extra ~30$ for the higher speed on a ryzen build.

Last time I posted someone suggested I upgrade my ram. I have a 2600k and 8gb of 1333mhz ram right now. What speed should I get? I don't want to overspend on DDR3. Aiming for 1440p60 which is hopefully doable with the cpu and a RX580.
>>
>>60536363
>-10C=50F
isn't 0C=32F though
>>
>>60536425
Don't bother spending on anything else than gpu, just upgrade everything
else when there's a meaningful upgrade to do like the 4c/4t model getting
outdated for games you wanna play or if you want to do any workstation
stuff on your pc. Would recommend if you don't already have a 1440p
monitor to just buy rx 570 4gb and stick to 1080p you'll have a more
compact experience considering your setup. Then with the money
you save you can probably make a bigger jump in the future.
>>
>>60536379
I think the issue is compatibility. Even modules listed on the QVL can still not run at the rated speed. I think I'll go with 2400 for now and wait until a bios update fixes the bullshit.

>memory diagnostic says everything is fine
>get fed up and downgrade back to my old 8gb ram

>PC runs fine after that with no crashes or BSODs

I then went into my UEFI options to try to find clues and discovered that my UEFI has this boot failsafe thing where if it fails to boot 3 times it will load the bios with the original settings. So that thing is the only thing saving me from being able to use my computer right now. I wish I knew what these original settings were so.

New agesa bios update is already in beta for crosshair vi and actually improves ram support as well as ram speeds, at least wait 1-2 weeks like i will to see how that goes.

Not like it'll be super pressing either. from what I understand ram speed matters a lot more for gaming on higher end GPUs, and less so on my 1070

At 60-100fps, or just for shit like CSGO that gets 250+fps no matter what? No, 2666 is fine.

I don't mind waiting and can put some more money into it if it's not smart to upgrade the current setup. In that case I'd probably want to go for a RX580 early and get the rest later. I don't generally play demanding games or mind lowering settings when I do (been doing that for years already anyway) but I'd really love to have Tekken 7 maxed in 1440p, so I can hopefully skimp on some parts since I have a clear target and I'm not that concerned with futureproofing and upgradeability.

>>
>>60536828
Well, if you have a 1440p monitor already go for it, the reason why i'd recommend staying at 1080p is because we are waiting for freesync 2 and also rx 570 4gb will be able to run that game maxed out at that res maybe get rx 570 8gb for 1440p if that game isn't really as demanding as other AAA titles. Generally when it comes to price/performance rx 570 4gb is the king of performance per $

okay guys, after many weeks of contemplating building a pc i have finally decided to start purchasing parts this Friday. my budget is 900 dollars. It has to perform flawlessly for school and light gaming. IE: Civ, Rocket League maybe some FPS's later down the road. How does this build look?
>>
>>60536910
a budget psu guide would be nice,
also an advanced ram guide would be great too,
for your sata ssd recommendations consider
just making a list of ssds most people might
find questionable that are actually proven to be
great value for money options.

oh god that's terrible
at that budget you can probably pull off
a very respectable ryzen build that will
be much superior to this both for gaming
and workstation stuff
But you can probably build a 400$ g4560
build that will do everything you mention
flawlessly so it depends really.
>>
>>60536960
>a budget psu guide would be nice,
I wish I could contribute to that, but my knowledge of capacitor quality and PSU contents are lacking. I should probably study some EE textbooks I've got laying around. I'll probably start looking into 80+ and 80+ Bronze PSUs to start with.
>an advanced ram guide would be great too
"Advanced" as in? There aren't that much more you can know about RAM other than where the flash is made (SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron, etc), the process it's made on, and who slaps the flash onto PCBs. Info on the effects of CAS timing and latencies are already out there, and it's really basic as is.
>just making a list of ssds most people might

great value for money options.
I've got several in the first dozen SSDs by size and flash type categories. Mushkin, PNY, and ADATA, mostly.

>>
>>60536958
Drop the motherboard for an H110 ITX. You're losing almost nothing with an H110 chipset over the much more expensive H270 chipset that loses over half its features over the H110 anyway due to the ITX form factor. ASRock makes an excellent H110 ITX/ac motherboard.
You can always buy a second 8GB DIMM later, so ignore the idiots complaining about using a single DIMM. You're only using half the memory channels, but you can always install a second identical RAM stick later.
I don't think you'll benefit that much from an NVMe drive if you're just playing games on it. You need an SSD with higher read speed, which the lowly Intel 600p delivers sufficient amounts of.
$50 for a 1TB 7200rpm drive seems like $5 too much IMO.
The Phanteks case is XBox huge, poor quality, and overpriced.
You don't need an 80+ Gold PSU. 80+ Bronze Semi-Mod is fine for your build because you're not leaving it on 24/7 nor are you stressing the PSU by very much with the hardware you have now.

With the $80 or so you've saved by dropping needlessly expensive parts, you could buy a GTX 1050 or RX 560.
>>
>>60536979
Samsung 850 evo is pretty good but Crucial kingston and corsair make good ones too just buy whatever is cheapest per gb in your area. Consider 500gb over 250gb if you're willing to invest.
>>60537039
It's just often that people making budget builds having trouble finding that perfect semi/non-modular 80 plus bronze psu that is actually made of quality material.
>"Advanced" as in?
For example ryzen builds benefit from ram speed much more than they do from low cas and they could also use a list of proven rams that run at higher speeds atm considering the issues alot have been having with their ryzen builds. Also that low cas benefits intel builds. And what the sweetspot of price/performance is for higher speed rams and how should one handle their budget for that matter.
>>60537049
i5 7500 was decent value for money but for not much more you can do alot better now that ryzen's out. Considering the use you wanna do a ~500$ g4560 build with a rx 570 4gb would even allow you to do some high end gaming as well(at medium/high depending on game).

>>60537313
Terribly bad. My i5-2500k bottlenecked the fuck out of my 7970 in newer games, and the 580 is twice as fast as that.
I was thinking I needed both a new CPU and GPU. Now that I got a 1600X, I could really probably go a year or two without a new GPU but I'll probably buy Vega anyway once there's a good 4K HDR10 120hz+ monitor to go with it for sale.

>>
>>60537559
Some will be, some will not be.
You should never set a starting bid that close to what other people are selling their things for in general because it attracts less attention than somehting that works it's own way up to that price for one, but sellers will also be looking at things like the particular make and model of the card and how much feedback you have as a seller which can lower what you should expect.
Also i dont know how you calculated that trend, i'm seeing quite a few go for under $100 in completed listings. You're definitely being optimistic if you think you can ignore those.
>>
>>60537559
The RX560 is almost as good performance but is new with warranty for $100-$110, and like 1/5th the power consumption.
Maybe some certain 280X models do go for that, but you shouldn't be too attached as it'll only go down in value as you sit on it.

I'm having difficulties installing Win7 on my MSI B150I mobo -> Intel SSDPEKKW512G7X1 (600p Series 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive).

It's proving to be a superbitch. Used MSI's tool for Win7 install disk, throwing NVME drivers on the usb (disk) and installing from that - all seems to go well, but I get a boot sector error when Win7 tries to launch from it.
Twice now.

I used a Linux LiveUSB to make the NVME card GPT, but that didn't fix a damn thing.

Is the issue just that I need to run the MSI tool on my Win7 USB disk again and re-do? Am I a meme for thinking NVME wouldn't cause me any issues?
>>
>>60538150
Why are you trying to add NVMe drivers for an SSD that's not NVMe?
Why did you buy literally the worst SSD, too?

Oh, I mean you bought an i5 or something so I guess you just make bad decisions.
>>
>>60538150
>600p Series 512GB M.2-2280
nvm it is NVMe. An NVMe that's slower than SATA SSDs. But costs more just because why not. lol.
>>
>>60538197
I dunno lol
I'm gonna buy a WD Blue 2.5 SSD (250GB) for booting off of on regular ol' SATA and forget about the Intel drive until I can get it working IN Windows

Thank for you telling me the issue, though. Troubleshooting in the dark is really aggravating - at least I know I made a bad purchase. ---> >>60538209 to you, as well
>>
>>60538219
Na that wasn't the issue. It is an NVMe; I was wrong. I just thought it wasn't based on benchmarks I've seen that show it slower than cheaper SATA SSDs.
So you do need NVMe drivers, I'd guess.
>>
>>60538237
Hmm... I did try explicitly shoving those NVMe drivers onto my install stick via the required tool to do so - I don't really care to go through the 1-2 hours it takes to write to that thing (it's been through a lot of writes, probably going to fail soon)
So a new drive will have to do.

Thanks for the clarification, though

could use some advice, right now I have a ryzen 1600 paired with an asus x370 pro mobo. Brand new build on all components.

The motherboard whines like crazy, already returned one and got a second one, still whining, even when idling. Should i try to replace the cpu? should i blame the psu? its a corsair cx550m brand new. should i opt for another motherboard?
>>
>>60533745
the shills won and removed it from the OP.
>>
>>60538484
Neither.
That x370 has terrible memory support and that B350 has worse VRMs than a similarly priced MSI or Asrock B350.
Also you dont need more than a 4+2 phase VRM setup to overclock ryzen 5, 3+2 is enough to max out the quadcore ones. X370 is for finer OC controls like base clock adjustment which can help get cheaper memory than the flare Xs up to higher frequencies and per core overclocking. For basic (but still ~4GHz capable) overclocking B350 is fine

Interesting in overclocking my system when I make it (both my CPU and GPU, plus will need to enable my RAM's XMP profile to get its actual speed). Gonna get the fractal r5 which comes with one intake fan and one exhaust fan, should I add another fan or two?
>>
>>60540518
4.2-4.4Ghz is pretty easy to get, and pretty much all chips should be able to hit it.
>>
>>60540604
Depends on your GPU.
If you've got a 290X or some shit like that you'll need another fan but if you've got somehting under 200watts it should be fine with 2 fans as long as they aren't piss weak.
Not really sure what the r5 comes with but as long as it's around 1500RPM or higher it'll probably be alright.

They probably look "shabby" because the 1050ti really doesn't need a cooler that big.
It's got a TDP of 75 watts, it can even be cooled passively with a big enough heatsink

That case looks rubbish, invest more in a better case.
Define C mini is a good mATX case, you get 2 fans (probably decent ones, but 3pin) with it as well, and you should place both of those fans as front intakes. You might not have to buy premium fans for this case, so you basically make up for the price difference right there.

2x8gb Ballistix sport LT 2400mhz, a bit more money, but way more value for the money... Doing the opposite of what you're asking for, but 8gb just isn't enough ram. You'll have to get a completely new kit, and sell your old, if you want to upgrade it again, if you get 2x4gb.

That looks like a pretty bad case. At the moment I only know of Define C mini being a good mATX case. You get a couple of fans with it, they just might be quiet enough to not distrub you too much.
A bad case will have vibrations, which is an extremely annoying sound that really can't be dampened, and have bad fan configurations with cheap ass loud fans, that just makes your computer sound like a turbo jet.

No, you're pretty budget already, and your build isn't really balanced.
Maybe if EVGA 500B are cheaper, but you really can't skimp any more on your PSU. The motherboard is good, and I don't think there's any cheaper alternative.

If you're not going to upgrade your PC for another 3-5 years, then you could go with a cheaper gigabyte board.

2x4GB is pretty bad though, 8gb isn't really enough for gaming anymore.

I'm pretty sure they recommend gtx 1060 for pro players
playing on 1080p144hz monitors. The 1060 has less
memory bus but higher clocks than the 570.
From what i understand probably gtx 1060 will be a good
option if you buy a g-sync 1080p144hz monitor because
with the higher clock speed will be able to reach 100+
fps if you drop settings to medium. The rx 570 on the
other hand will be able to keep 60fps stable on ultra.
If you plan to play competitively the gtx 1060 and a
high hz 1080p g-sync monitor is the way to go(g-sync
monitors are costy) otherwise you can get rx 570 and
play at 60hz 1080p freesync monitor(they're cheaper)
while the game looks pretty in ultra.

480 8gb/570 and up are fine for most VR. RE7 is where they start to hit the wall but still run fine if i remember right
VR is still immature, so those should do you fine for a year or three. I'm doubting any really graphically intensive VR will come out in the time. Reason being that headsets are still costly.
There should be a few more titles like RE7 that make use of VR as a side gimmick, that'll require better than a 480, but as said it'll be a side gimmick. Not really worth investing in a high end card now for. Better off saveing for whatever comes in future.
