Treble boy, pop music will definitely come as harsh and sibilant with those 2. HD700 has treble spike around 6-7k like HD800 but much worse and Amiron looks to have wide spike around 10k. Amiron came out recently so it's price is same as official of 600$, HD700 are older and you can sometimes find them for 400$. If you can, go to the store and listen to HD700 and see if you can handle the treble. Otherwise I would suggest you HD600 or DT880. What were your previous headphones?

Forget it. Just get some earbuds or iems, or on-ears like the portapros or px-100 (sadly not durable). Can't really rest your head on the seat with full sized. Even if you could, they'd just eventually break.

So none of those that you tested came as bright to you? Memeron has looser clamp from DT1990, it's for professional use while Amiron is more for consumer use, so you might give it a chance if you didn't find DT1990 to be bright. You might really like HD700 tho if you like treble and WON'T GET FATIGUE from it.

Remember, what sounds crispy and nice in the shop can backfire easily at home over long listening sessions. How long you spend time with headphones? You have HD598, I had them too great headphone. I suggest you strongly try HD600. It's a clear upgrade from HD598, at least it was for me, in terms of sound. Everything is better, just better, bass, incredible vocals, better treble and pin point imaging, altho narrow soundstage. And you can listen to them hours and hours without getting fatigue.
>>
>>60517490
Some things sound faster tho, at least perceived. DT880 sounded 'faster' to me than HD600, I don't know why but it was very apparent on rock and I tried them before getting anywhere into audio world, previous headphones were HD598.
>>
How much of a difference is there between Etymotic MK5 and HF5?
>>
Hi guys I've been slowly building up my battle station and headphones are up next. I bought a focusrite 2i2 dac/amp, this is the specs for the headphone out

Dynamic Range 107 dB (A-Weighted)

THD+N <0.002% (minimum gain, -1dBFS input with 22Hz/22kHz bandpass filter)

Maximum Output Level > +10dBu

Impedance 10 Ω

I'm after some all rounder type headphones for gaming, music, plus I use a video chatroom a lot so it would be nice if they can produce clear vocals.

budget of around £100-£130 (say $110-150)

Also I really don't know much about these sort of things, so should I be running headphones directly from my speakers (m-audio AV42's) or through my dac/amp? (I heard I prob gon fugged up buying this model)
>>
>>60518179
I got some replacement velour pads from Amazon. I would check there.
>>
>>60518489
Sennheiser HD599 > AKG k702 > HD598 > HD558.

Through DAC/AMP.
>>
are ATH-M50Xs worth it? I generally want to spend around 100$ on a pair of closed back headphones for studying/working at the library but I'd be willing to spend a little more if they're well worth it.

>>
>>60512604
no, when you want monitoring capabilities for nearfield listening, this is pretty much your best bet.

if you want something more musical and have abit more space, get Dali Zensor 1 maybe
>>
>>60519489
>amp 10 Ω Impedance
>k702s are 62Ω
Generally the lower the amp impedance the better.
Ideally, you'd want 1:10 between amp and headphones. in this case it's 5:31, which isn't as good, but should be OK.
Here's an intro to all this shit: https://nwavguy.blogspot.ie/2011/09/more-power.html
>>
>>60519652
Why exactly do ''normal'' speakers not do well for nearfield? Also, there's gotta be something in the price range. Something like Yamaha NS-10 or something.
>>
>>60519791
because near field speaker are optimised for low distortion, very neutral sound, and narrow soundstage. also the bassports are mostly on the front so the bass isn't emphasized by reflection of your wall behind it

a normal speaker with typical rear port uses the space it has to create a wider soundstage while also building up more dynamics

both sound better when you grant them some space to breath, no walls near 1m.

speakers indoors usually rely on one principle which is called room modes [collection of resonances] which gets defined by your surrounding walls.
>>
>>60519855
forgot to add.

defined by your surrounding walls and how much they reflect sound, if they are made out of wood or concrete.

and then the layout of your speakers do the magic

It's OK to use the abbreviation "PC" to refer to a certain kind of computer hardware, but please don't use it with the implication that the computer is running Microsoft Windows. If you install GNU/Linux on the same computer, it is still a PC.

The term "WC" has been suggested for a computer running Windows.

>>60518312
The term "consumer," when applied to refer to computer holders, is loaded with assumptions we should reject. Playing a digital recording, or running a program, does not consume it.

The terms "producer" and "consumer" come from economic theory, and bring with them its narrow perspective and misguided assumptions. These tend to warp your thinking.

In addition, describing the holders of software as "consumers" presumes a narrow role for them: it regards them as sheep that passively graze on what others make available to them.

This kind of thinking leads to travesties like the CBDTPA "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act" which would require copying restriction facilities in every digital device. If all the holders do is "consume," then why should they mind?

The shallow economic conception of holders as "consumers" tends to go hand in hand with the idea that published works are mere "content."

To describe people who are not limited to passive use of works, we suggest terms such as "individuals" and "citizens".

If I don't love them, they seem to have a solid resale value.
How do they compare to the 880's?
>>
>>60522037
The 880s I find are a bit brighter than the HD600. I had the 250 ohm version which doesn't have as pronounced of a treble spike as the other versions. However, the HD600 sounds noticeably more clear. It's much more pleasant on brightly mastered recordings. I enjoyed the bass on the 880s more than the HD600.

Fidelio M1mkII (original model M1 are good also, but slightly bass heavy)

The plain black/silver ones are very conservative looking, fairly light but with a quality build, they isolate sound really well, have a warm detailed sound signature - not exactly neutral, though... also selling for really cheap these days.

This is mostly the best monitor in that price range, lots of comparisons came up with that when I was looking into it a while back (also considered Mackie MR5MK3, KRK RP5G3, Yamaha HS5, Presonus ErisE5).

Is that the only option for good speakers at that price range? Since they're monitors they sound great when sitting at a particular place. What'd be good to get great sound across a 4x4m room withour having to point the speakers at a certain place. (No room conditioning either)

>>60526251
I do. I said no opinion on the product itself. I commented on the graph. Did you perhaps misread?

CSD is near pointless stuff with headphones. The specific one there severely masks frequency domain information due to the smoothing applied, overlaid channels with poor transparency make it hard to to read, windowing removes low end response and because I don't have the plot here, it tells nothing important about the time domain response either. Knowing the HD 600's phase response there's really nothing interesting in the time domain. The headphone can be considered minimum phase through the band shown in the CSD.

Previously owned ath m50x, loved them, had to sell them because my dad bought me some shitty pair I don't want to talk about, and I couldn't keep using the m50x without hurting his feelings.

Later moved out of home and upgraded to akg k7xx through one of the Massdrop promos. Love them to death, but I need something close backed because my roommate is loud as fuck.

Will I be disappointed by the 770s or can they pull their weight? Any other cans in a $300usd or less price range I should consider?

I didn't say that. Go read what was said and cut the act.

If we look at the headphone which was posted, the HD 600, we know it's a single driver headphone that essentially operates in minimum phase. Phase is part of the frequency response and response of the HD 600 is measured by various sites for good confidence. Because it can be considered minimum phase, the frequency response already tells us the time domain response and vice versa. We don't need a CSD to look at it as it's inconvenient and masks the more important frequency magnitude. We definitely don't need a CSD which is smoothed, L/R channels overlaid and non-interactive so that we are left eyeballing what part of the decay is implied by the frequency magnitude and what could be a product of something else. Understand that you can't see both time domain and magnitude simultaneously.

Take an equalizer to that and you'll end up with a waterfall which barely looks like one. Pic related is a perfect minimum phase inverse function of a headphone response convolved with the original response itself. We normalized the frequency magnitude and the waterfall disappeared. The resonances are gone, ringing is gone and decay is as fast as it can be.

If you think it gave us something else in the example, please enlighten us. Could be that you are better at time/frequency analysis than I am.

How do I get line level output from my o2dac to my speaker amp? Apparently you can use the the 3.5mm 'input' as line level output when it is powered off, but I want to do this whilst it's powered on, and preferably with a 3.5mm jack in the rear.

Sennheisers fit just fine, but they clamp super hard when they're new.
>>
>>60528034
Mostly minumum. Looking at the phase will show that it is roughly proportionate to the derivative of log magnitude.
Multipath propagation and other things do induce observable phase shift, but all-pass shift makes minimal shift in decay time.

Directivity of the driver and ear doesn't mean much for our single point measurement. As serious a problem this is this is in practice, our mathematical corrections concern the transfer function with spatial variable held constant.

This is only $20, and people saying it's better than the FiiO E10

https://www.amazon.com/Syba-SD-DAC63094-Headphone-Amplifier-Packaging/dp/B00KGK5I38/

My FiiO E10 3.5mm jack is busted, and won't play audio unless it's plugged in a very precise way, so I'm looking for a replacement.
>>
>>60535016
Any measurements of it? I personally wouldn't buy an audio product that hasn't had someone take it apart, inspect it, and measure the performance.
>>
Something seems off.

I got a HD 380 Pro for cheap recently, and I swear it sounds better than my HD650.

And by better I mean clearer, as in I'm hearing things in songs that I couldn't hear before, or only heard vaguely.

The second weirdness it is the HD 380 actually sounds better running on the Modi/Magni than the laptop or phone, unlike the X2. I am all sorts of baffled. What's going on?

Great bass that are not overwhelming but very tight and punchy, good mediums that are neutral and not too much treble although I'm not too sensible about that

650 is darker than the 380 Pro and helps the being on an amp though my dumb ass can't read those graphs on Golden Ears for Impulse response and such. Metal571 last night said Tyll has his 380 Pros at the moment so we might InnerFidelity measurements of the 380's pretty soon.

I got these: https://www.amazon.com/Shure-HPAEC840-Replacement-Cushions-Headphones/dp/B002Z9JWZS

They're a little loose so what I did was get black hair ties and put them around the lip of where the pads attach to keep them more secure.

hd600: It's good, but definitely doesn't suit my preference in sound. Very comfortable, has fallen about 1ft onto my table a good handful of times and is still working just fine. Rolled off bass and not as much treble as I would like, but still sounds nice

dt770: I got it to try and complement my hd600 since those don't have much bass. I learned that I shouldn't have bothered with trying to get the bass I wanted with headphones. Somewhat uncomfortable with glasses, sounds good otherwise.

M100: Uncomfortable for more than a couple hours. The most bass out of any of my headphones. Sound pretty good overall.

1more triple driver: Emphasized bass, but I don't notice it as much when I'm walking with them for some reason. Sound very nice for the $68 I got them for and are very comfortable. I'm very happy with them, although I really wished they had detachable cables.

Shp9500: Very bright and have little bass. Suits my sound preference perfectly and makes me wonder if I should get a t90 or t1 sometime in the future. Pretty sure it requires the most power out of everything I have, which is pretty weird since the sensitivity is pretty high.

ath-ad500x: They didn't come with the stock pads, and the shure pads they came with sounded horrible, so I bought a $6 ebay replacement pair. I don't think the replacement pads are very good, they're extremely stiff and my ears can't even fit in them. They sound less bright than the 9500's with a bit more bass, maybe due to the pads.

Monoprice 8323: A little dark, but pretty good for around $18. Completely unwearable stock due to comfort, but stretching them out for around 4-5 days straight seemed to make them a little better. I just got a pair of brainwavs pleathers today, so I'll see how they sound with them.

urbanite xl: My ears don't quite fit into them which makes them a little uncomfortable. Emphasized bass and rolled off highs. Very annoying cable. Don't like them that much.

Ath-m20x: Somewhat comfortable. Some highs seem emphasized while some others don't feel emphasized. Don't seem like very good headphones overall.

grado sr60e: Not as bright as I thought they'd be and have more bass than I thought they would. Uncomfortable due to clamp, but that's probably solvable. I don't really like them, especially not for the $80 they retail for.

Brainwavs hm2: Straight garbage, I've never heard a worse headphone. Way too dark, way too uncomfortable, headband is way too big. Everything about it except the pads is a disgrace. They look over ear, but they're on ear. Matte material is a grease and fingerprint magnet.
