Nice dac/amp and speakers.

If only if you knew what you're missing out by using DT880 rather than The HD600.

>>60490374
As a HD600 owner, the answer is not much.
>>

>>60490374
>>60490377
I was already set on DT880's after kinda going on a back and forth between K712's and DT880's. DAC X6 was intruiging with it's power output which is why I considered it (apparently there's an amp only version of it on Ali?) and speakers caught my eye for when my girlfriend and I move in together to watch movies and shit.
My main concern is clamp. I like a tight clamp. My small head likes the 668B's and even tightened the clamp on those though the DT880 pads worry me with how retardedly soft they are and I wear thin plastic glasses. Maybe DT770 pads would help with that?

If I love my DT770 and want something more neutral and open, should I go for DT880 or HD600?

I don't find the treble on 770 too much, which has me leaning 880.
Are they different enough to not be redundant?
>>
HI /g/, I'm looking for a new pair of cans, care to help me out?
~100$
Canada
These will mostly be for when I'm at work and plugged directly into a pc. I work in a 3D studio and we've got quite a big aeration system and there's a lot of people who talk loudly. So I'm guessing ideally noise cancelling?
For the type, full-sized? I don't know the difference between that and IEMs
Closed, I don't want to bother others with what I'm listening
I like my cans to be comfortable, I'll have them on most of the day so >8hrs a day
I'm no audiophile so I don't know anything about sound signature at all
I currently have a pair of shitty pone ear buds and at home some Sennheiser hd 419 I think. I really like them.

Thanks for the help mates

A sacrifice, but if it's to be used at an open office or the like, it makes sense.
>comfortable
Ok.
>signature: no idea.
As neutral as possible, then.
I'd suggest Sennheiser HD380 Pro. Good isolation, comfortable, reputable, removable cable, replaceable parts, relatively neutral (although a little bassy).
>$100
On closed, this is going to be an issue sadly. You'll have to stretch your budget a little to get something decent.
>>
>>60490889
HD600 hands off. DT880 isn't even in the same category; if anything, that competes with the much cheaper HD558.
>I don't find the treble on DT770 too much
Then you'll be fine with HD600 rather than HD650.
As you already have some DT770 beyers, I strongly suggest HD600 for something different.

>>

>HD419 > HD380
Not by far. Do not get tricked by model numbers. HD4xx are pleb devices. Super colored.

HD380 Pro are or pretend to be "studio monitors". They're a little bassy but otherwise pretty neutral.

Only according to one overzealous anon who uses them at work with his Fulla 2 as he's said for the past dozen hpg's it feels like.
XPT100 or CB-1 will sound as good and be more comfortable for cheaper.
HD380 will clamp the shit out your head if it's not small.
The only thing they're good at is isolation, and it won't be world's better than what I've listed.

If you want max comfort and improved, though v shaped, sound look for some DT770 pro 80 ohms used.
>>
>>60491721
>Only according to one overzealous anon who uses them at work with his Fulla 2 as he's said for the past dozen hpg's it feels like.
Opinion of anons here are probably irrelevant, but google seems to agree about the HD380 Pro being reputable.
>>
How are the hd598 special edition or the hd280 pro compared to the hd380 pro?
Both are more in my price range but if there's a definitive difference I'll go with the 380 and eat instant noodles for a couple of weeks.
>>60491721
230$, yeah nah that's outta my price range.
>>
>>60491749
280 are garage, I'd stay away. 598se are open, 598cs are also garbage.
HD380 are the only closed Sennheisers worth anything from what I've tried.
>>
>>60491749
>230$, yeah nah that's outta my price range.
That's why I listed two cheaper options than the 380's as well.
>>
>>60491815
Oh! I didn't see that part, my bad. I'll check the reviews, thanks!
>>60491802
Closed and Open only means that you'll have sound leaking outside right? For example would my HD419 be closed? The the 598 we're looking good and I prefer the tissue pads instead of leather, my ears tend to get too hot with leather.
>>
If I like my K7XX's but wouldnt mind an upgrade, whats the logical next step from here?
>>
The Status Audio CB-1 are looking interesting plus there's a sale on massdrop for these. They're looking quite thick tho, doesn't it feel weird? One thing I liked about my hd419 is that they were rather slim.
>>
>>60491006
MDR7506 literally nothing else, maybe m40x if you can find it cheaper, nothing @100 is going to be 8 hours comfortable though unless you put big aftermarket pads on them
>>
>>60491880
419 is closed. Open means you'll hear what's going on around you, and if you have your volume up a lot or people are close they'll hear what you're listening to.
>>60491950
I would consider the thickness a good thing. Pads on them are thick and super comfy. Envelope your whole ear easily and even my huge ears don't touch the inside.
>>
>>60492019
>hasn't tried HM5 or CB-1.
>>
>>60492046
7506 blow those out of the water because it's more neutral.
>>
>>60492168
I can agree with that, but he's looking for something comfy to wear at work, which I wouldn't consider to 7506 to fall under.
Anon doesn't seem like he's too concerned with sound quality, so I would weigh comfort more heavily.

Someone insists that their Stax lambda amplifier works normally with a switching power supply.

Is this claim false? From my knowledge, amplifiers only take linear power supplies. Also from experience I could never get an inspec switching power supply to work with my stax gear. There would always be a pulsating LED and no sound while the original linear adapter worked fine.

Please help. I don't understand where I fucked up with my purchase.

I have an srm-xh with the original JP DC power supply. Since it's being used in the US I assumed I needed to get a DC power supply that matched the 120V input to be safe.

I purchased this http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/410/media-961310.pdf
which is a switching mode DC PS that is inspec with the original in terms of voltage and polarity. When I plug the DC adapter into the amplifier the status LED pulsates lightly and does not stay solid like with the original adapter. While the setup works perfectly with the original I don't want to take the chances of using a PS rated for 100V on a 110/120V system.

The info on the power requirements is really obscure. I wouldn't be asking for all this spoonfeeding otherwise.

I've been looking around sennheiser's catalogue and the HD579s caught my eye. How are they?
>>
>>60501674
First 2 should be the most neutral.
No experience with m70's, but they dont recommended here at all which may not be a good sign.
Either way, any of the mXX series will likely need new pads to be comfy.
>>
>>60502490
Any Sennheiser isn't gonna give you much bass unless you equalize.
>>
>>60502338
They're very neutral in bass, mids are very clean and clear though the treble is what scares most people off from these. As a previous owner of the 681, it can be harsh to the ears. I couldn't really complain as they were my first nice headphones and were so clean and clear for $30. The differences between the 681, 681B and 681F is how rolled off they are in bass with the 681 (Red Ring) model having the most bass and the 681F having the most rolled off though all are very neutral in bass. The Samson SR850 is a rebranded 681 Red Ring with better pads.

I mostly listen to chill electronic music, some psychedelic, and some big band/jazz as of late. I generally listen to music on my phone or on my computer.

Just buy the SR850 for around $30. I owned over 100 headphones, some costing over $1000, and if I was forced to live with that as my only pair, I can. It's that good.

Yes. I have SR950's for when my AC's on. DT770 would be the logical upgrade from there or TH-X00's if you have the money to spend.
>>

Hm, so are the DT770's more isolating than the sr950's? I can hear my computer fan and such pretty clearly with my sr950's on.

That's a loud ass fan unless your PC's on your desk. Toss some noctua fans in that shit and a new CPU cooler maybe to reduce the noise coming from your PC though thats a different solution.
I'd assume they'd isolate less.

My majestic Koss Porta Pro are rapidly dying and I decided to grow my taste in music. So, I've just ordered Beyerdynamics DT990 Edition 250 Ohm. I've heard that they have a very natural sound. But what about fun sound? Which headphones are the most "fun", not neccessarily natural, sounding, in your opinion?
>>

Search the stax thread on head-fi. Are you sure it's the right polarity? Has the right output voltage? Enough current?

The DT 990 has a very "fun" sound signature. Not neutral at all.

>>
>>60504697
>Search the stax thread on head-fi
Trust me I did.
>Are you sure it's the right polarity? Has the right output voltage? Enough current?
positive because I have the original japanese adapter for the unit. Voltage, polarity and current are all in spec.

The only three things that I can think of causing a problem is:
-the original adapter might be linear (heavier brick) while my adapter is switching (I've had multiple people tell me switching should work and that most stax power for lambdas is switching)
-the switching adapter I bought is somehow broken

The only shitty multimeter I have is broken so I can't do any close inspection. I was thinking of just flipping the wires on a positive polarity adapter but that's a dirty solution that I can't even verify

I wonder what the symptom of pulsating LED on the amplifier means in terms of power supply problems. Does it have anything to do with pulse width modulation
http://www.mastechpowersupplies.com/linear-power-supply-vs-switching-power-supply.html

If I knew two shits about basic electronics I wouldn't have to speculate with these blogposts
>>
>>60505272
>(I've had multiple people tell me switching should work and that most stax power for lambdas is switching)

Every single amp I've owned or built for estats has had a linear PSU. Not sure where this comes from.
>>
>>60505163
>Better amp, better DAC
And nothing to back that up.
>>
>>60505379
yeah I don't understand either. The link in my previous post says that audio equipment generally takes linear supplies.

From my understanding, heavier bricks are linear while switching are light smaller form factors.
>>
>>60503026
He's a really desperate and a bad one. Unbox Therapy or whatever is much better and more successful at doing the same thing: looking at things on camera without knowing shit.
>>
>>60505467
I guess just try an appropriate linear supply next. If that doesn't work then you can probably start suspecting the amp itself.
>>
>>60505435
Not like it's hard to make a better product than the mediocrity Schiit churns out
>>
>>60505559
The amp works perfectly when tested with the original Stax adapter I have. It's bulky so I'm pretty sure it's linear.
The only problem is the adapter is designed for 100V input so I'm afraid I will damage it on my US voltage
But like you said, I guess the next step is to test a properly working linear supply.
It's such a bitch getting info on hardware this old. I have the original manuals in English but unbelievably there are no technical specs for the DC power adapter

I wonder if there is a decently priced universal desktop supply with variable voltage and polarity that I could just wire out a barrel plug from
>>
>>60505559
>appropriate linear supply
*Regulated.
>>
>>60505695
That helps, but a regulated supply isn't necessarily in every stax amp.
>>
>>60479252
Being balanced doesn't has to do with much something is V-shapped, just with how close to being leveled the treble and bass are in relation to each other. Strong V-shape or light v-shape can be just as balanced.
>>
>>60501624
you can flip polarity on those by simply connecting the wires in inverse right?

Passively, the response is somewhat skewed. Plenty of unfortunate peaks and dips in its response, even if it is easy to equalize out. You aren't really using this for the passive factor, and it equalizes itself anyway.
Self-implements headphone response adjustment when ANC is activated. Smooths out bass and midrange unevenness. Adds more subbass.
Bose ergonomics has been one of their strong points. It's small and compact. Can be a little too small for those with larger ears.

I spoke with someone else about them too, and was told the highs would be harsh. I heard someone bitching for 11 minutes on Youtube for the same thing. Shame, since it seems they're really accurate.

I have purchased some Shure SRH840s earlier today. Very excited!

Only thing is, I don't know if I'd need an amp/dac. My mobo is nice (Asus X99 Deluxe). I wonder what I should pick up, if I should anyway. Headset only has an impedance of 44 ohms.
>>
>>60508913
They're easy to power, any source you have will be fine.
Unless your mobo has static or hiss you won't need an external amp/dac.
Having a big volume knob is nice though.
>>
>>60508947
Sounds great. My mobo should suffice, then.

Do you think I could even power them with my phone? Laying in bed listen to some tunes sounds fantastic. I read somewhere that these headphones, at their ohms value, could function fine with many mobile devices.
>>
>>60508913
>Shame, since it seems they're really accurate.
If they were accurate, they wouldn't have excess highs. Accurate just means neutral.

And if you go for an amp, get a Fulla 2. E10k is fine, but the Fulla has way more connectivity options and will be useful longer.
>>
>>60508977
Some phones have better amps built in than mobos, so yes.
Don't get hung up on the ohms though, isn't as important as you might think.
>>
First step into audio world!

Fiio Q1 amp and m50x in matte gray got in today.

Holy shit I didnt know a DAC/amp would make that big of a difference. Not sure if I made the right choice on the color since not a lot of my stuff is gray at home, but for one the go it fits perfectly.

If/when I upgrade my headphones I'm thinking of turning the m50x into the strictly mobile pair while whatever else I get would be the at home set, but for now this is a hell of a lot better than anything i've had before.

Seriously having one of the most orgasmic experiences of my lifetime right now, these sound so ridiculously amazing and I've never spent more than $50 on audio equipment before. I tried out the cordless function and it works really well, the noise cancellation is fucking mint and it even has this really weird microphone function where the world turns into a recording session and you can hear the tiniest sounds 20 metres away, I think Sennheiser added it to pick up airplane announcements kek

I'm using them interchangeably on my desktop even though they were designed for portability and there aren't any issues except for no proper integrated microphone for talking, but obviously you can just get an accessory added or use a mounted one. If anyone's thinking about buying these I can't recommend enough desu

Had these headphones called JAM from Target. I liked how I could connect an aux cord from it since it was also wireless.
Would like if I was able to use an AUX cord for it just in case the wire would ever get fucked up.

Well, if we are going to talk about what headphone brands did several years ago, it's always fun to remember that Sennheiser supplied the Nazis with radio stuff for the army.
If i'm not mistaken Dr. Fritz Sennheiser was even reconized as a Nazi himself.

Were you the same guy asking a similar question a couple of weeks ago? Based on the spec sheet, I'm pretty sure the adapter you got is a linear type so it's odd.

I would try a true regulated, linear PS next. This one is more expensive but it's pretty good, based on the Studer 900 power supply. Obviously you need to specify 120V input, 12VDC output. 15W transformer should suffice, I would spend a bit to upgrade to the Talema unit. The barrel size looks correct already.

Thanks for helping out earlier.
Unfortunately that adapter was a switching mode. It wasn't clear on the spec sheet but I think it's mentioned on the product web page. Besides that everything else was inspec. I completely overlooked that requirement. What's wrong with using something like >>60501624 as a permanent solution?

I might also just switch polarity on one of the many center positive linear adapters I have lying around by flipping the wire end

Don't really want to waste more money since I fucked up one purchase already
>>

Think safety. This thing is happy to supply 10A and provides no apparent safeguards.
>>
>>60510791
yeah, you're right, Chinese shit with exposed wires isn't really a safe solution. I was thinking of a smaller amperage of the same item but it still isn't smart

I could do a neater job flipping the polarity on a center positive 12V
>>
>>60510831
Generally, if it's chink and plugs to AC mains, you don't want to look away from it. Not even go to the toilet.
>>
>>60510842
will take that advice to heart. All this bullshit over sourcing a 12V wall plug is really funny.

funniest part is I have all the original documentation in English for the srm-xh yet it doesn't mention the only tech specs that matter, power specs on the wall plug

This looks like the right purchase at this point
https://www.jameco.com/z/DDU120150H4530-AC-to-DC-Wall-Adapter-Transformer-Single-Output-12-Volt-1-5-Amp-18-Watt_203036.html
>>
>>60510881
A wallwart looks sane indeed. Just doublecheck it supplies enough current + a lil headroom.
>>
>>60510764
So does any sound come out when you use the new adapter?

>What's wrong with using something like >>60501624 (You) as a permanent solution?

That's a switching type as well...
>>
>>60510881
That's unregulated so it will be no different than the one from Mouser.
>>
>>60510904
yeah, it's way over the current I need (the amp only draws 0.4A) but it's the only linear negative polarity wallwart I can find.
>>60510906
>That's a switching type as well..
yeah I know, it's just you said it did work
>oes any sound come out when you use the
no, no sound. the status LED fades in and out as if the power delivery spikes and goes back down. I assume this is the nature of a switching mode power delivery.
>>60510922
>That's unregulated so it will be no different
I think the problem is between switcing and linear

The original adapter (the 100V Stax one) appears to be linear unregulated. I can't confirm the unregulated part myself but I've read on hifi that Stax power supplies aren't regulated

If it was switching then the brick would be much lighter

Then flip the wire like you said. Don't risk another unregulated adapter.
>>
>>60511017
yeah, what a bitch this has been.
I mean you can't go wrong with regulated anyway as long as it's in spec.

The only multimeter I had was fucked up so I can't tell you whether the Stax branded one is regulated or not.

Anyway thanks again for the continued input. I'm going to publish a guide about this once I done. The info on stax gear is annoyingly obscure

Hi guys I've been slowly building up my battle station and headphones are up next. I bought a focusrite 2i2 https://uk.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-2i2 to run my mic, synthesizer and speakers from (M-Audio AV42's)

I'm after some all rounder type headphones for gaming, music and making music, plus I use a video chatroom a lot so it would be nice if they can produce clear voices.

budget of around £100-£130 (say $110-150)

Also I really don't know much about these sort of things so should I be running headphones directly from my speakers or through my dac/amp? (I heard I prob gon fugged up buying this model)
>>
>>60509161
It's a matter of being able to deliver enough power across a wide enough frequency range with minimal distortion. High impedance makes the job easier. Making a difference is a relative question and not something you can reliably tell by the ear. A motherboard/phone/whatever can be a transparent source to drive headphones meaning there is absolutely nothing to upgrade for sound quality wise. Or they might not. They aren't built alike and it's always load dependent. Impedance alone really tells nothing useful for you either way.

Fulla 2 is affordable as far as discrete headphone amplifiers go.
>>
>>60511105
Looks right besides the fact it looks like a switching type. It doesn't say which type on the data sheet.

Will keep it in mind if the polarity switch of the existing adapters I have doesn't work

Basically I know I fucked up with buying the wrong type of either:

linear vs switching
regulated vs unregulated

I don't know at this point what caused the problem. I am leaning towards switching being the problem because it fundamentally delivers power in a different way compared to linear. Linear power supplies are also most often used in audio equipment.

Unregulated power supplies shouldn't be that much of a problem because the amp is likely built to have a tolerance range. I don't know this for sure but I've heard that stax doesn't use regulated DC wallwarts

K553 is a notoriously poor at sealing and not necessarily that comfortable either, at least from what people have to say about it. I'd advise never to recommend it without the person having a chance to listen and try them out first. They go from their ideal V-shape to bright, no bass sound from one of person to next and change their sound even if you move or adjust the headphones on your head.
>>
>>60511190
It's a pickle. The Jameco I linked at >>60511105 is both regulated and linear but has the wrong polarity while >>60510881 has the correct polarity and linear but it's unregulated.

Not headphones related, but: JBL lsr305 for €149 or Tannoy Reveal 502 for €182? JBL have rear bass port and my desk might not have enough room.
>>
>>60511323
I wouldn't bother with anything back ported if space is a premium.
>>
>>60511323
>bass port
Literally doesn't matter unless you load the port by jamming the loudspeakers tight against the wall. You need a distance of the port diameter from the wall and you get that by toeing them in for basic alignment. Not a factor here.
>>
>>60511382
>>60511375
