The USA has lost their influence in Africa to the Chinese and with the republicans in charge we'll never get it back. The Chinese are already building military ports in sight of American military ports. Expect us to even lose our ports.

Yeah, China is making a serious play to expand its influence into Africa by making all kinds of infrastructure investments in Africa.

They see Africa as a potentially huge booming population. If China can put themselves in a leadership relationship over Africa -- essentially treating Africa like a vast colony of workers and customers -- then they see a huge potential for increased world influence in the future.

It's an absolutely brilliant strategy, and the USA and EU are idiots for not thinking of it first.

No, only the very best and brightest Africans are cherry-picked to go to China.

For the vast majority of Africans, China will simply treat them as a huge manual labor pool.

The Chinese will be the owners and managers, and the Africans will be the labor force. In that system, only a very small number of the very smartest Africans are needed to serve as low-level-management liaisons who are fluent in both Chinese and the African languages.

China definitely has big enough balls for that.

But the USA and EU are too squeamish about the social injustices in their colonial past, and so they're too pussy to go to Africa and exploit their vast resources (both natural and human) for corporate profits and political power.

Although I am kind of surprised that we haven't seen at least some of the most evil of the USA corporations (like, say, at the "Halliburton" level of evil) try to sneak into Africa for some good old-fashioned colonial raping. Well, of course they've STARTED doing it. But they're like 1% of the way done with the job.

We'll know that the Chinese have made some real progress when Africa finally becomes a place that people actually want to visit. We're decades away from that, and the Chinese have a shit ton of work to do before they can make that happen. But the rewards for China will be beyond imagination if they succeed. China has already taken the first baby steps, and they've proved that they have the balls to eventually get the job done.

Really, the only question left is: Is there enough time for the USA and the EU to get in on some of the action? Or will Africa be 100% Chinese owned and operated 50 years from now?

Their numbers were probably added in many districts without ever being subtracted in another location. And then there were other unknowns, like the homeless and those reported millions said still to be living in caves. And, of course, under China’s one-child policy, many families failed to report childbirths. Officials had to compensate for all sorts of factors.

After the estimated figure was tallied and passed up to the county level, it was adjusted upwards, again, for similar reasons—just to be on the safe side—and then it happened again at the provincial and national levels. At each stage, some officials in charge thought it prudent to add to the final figure. This was China, after all. No one would ever doubt a larger figure, naturally.

China had a motive, of course, for inflating its population statistic. For hundreds of years, the government has been selling the promise of a large consumer market to foreign investors. Conservative estimates helped no cause, and in China political concerns always took precedence over the truth.

The best part about census estimates, however, was not what happened inside China, but what went on abroad. In just about any year, no matter what figure the government reported, financial analysts, journalists, and other researchers were all willing to stake their professional reputations on the officially reported figure being on the low side.

“China itself doesn’t know how many Chinese there are,” they would say. When China was claiming that it officially had a population of 1.3 billion, foreigners who had “done the research” came back with a figure rounded up to 1.5 billion. And these people were never criticized or asked to produce their methodology—in part because there were too many who wanted to believe a higher number. Who needed any “friend of China” when you had these sort of enablers around?

Westerners who visited China for the first time had no problem coming away with the impression that China was enormous. They popped into cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, and they imagined a similar urban density cast out over a landmass the size of the United States. They guessed that China was uniformly populous, without stepping away from these coastal, dense urban centers. They did not understand how the interior of China was unlivable, that mountainous regions and other geographic barriers did not lend themselves to agricultural or even residential development.

They also failed to take into account cultural differences in urban planning.

Their intent has been to instill a sense of grandeur and awe. Why these observers did not report the same on India—a country that visually appeared more crowded—was curious.

China was supposed to be unimaginably big, but for those who lived in China for longer periods, the place shrank over time. For me, the phenomenon was not only related to taxi drivers; I also bumped into people—other Westerners, especially—that I knew, in airports, restaurants, on trains, and on the streets. Part of it was perception. Foreigners who were on the ground tended to know of one another.

Their communities were more tight-knit, and they were more visible. The Chinese who lived in China at least, those who held positions in government and industry, were also more likely to know one another. The perception of China as a small place had something to do with demographics. There were many who had very little, and then there were the principal players in the economy.

It was important for the game to be won, and it mattered less how the score was achieved. Appearance over substance was a cultural theme in China; it quite likely weighed on the reporting of population statistics. The Chinese had a nationalistic need to feel superior

If you wanted to help out you'd hand them some technology for free and teach them how to use it and how to make more. No colony's ever gotten anything but exploitation from western countries. They're at least some tens of years behind everybody thanks to that at least in part.

There was an old joke that used to make the rounds: “What’s the definition of a 50-50 joint venture in China?”

Punch line: “It’s an investment vehicle where the foreign partner loses 50 percent of his money in the first year and the other 50 percent in the second.”

If it was funny, it was only because it really used to be like that in China. Foreigners came in with large sums of cash and left without it soon enough. At some point along the way, local operators came to understand that this practice was bad for the economy in general, and the word was put out that fraud of this sort was not to be tolerated. Those who cheated foreigners were not prosecuted necessarily; the
behavior simply stopped on its own.

Outright fraud cases had gone and were replaced with a more sophisticated model. Rather than an entire investment vanishing into thin air, foreigners who came in with capital found that their businesses went nowhere special. The money was not lost exactly, but then there was little or no profit. It was a con all the same, but one that was more subtle.

Foreigners doing business in China were inclined to say that they were doing well, even when they were not. I knew this from working with many clients whose secrets I shared. Like a gambler, they exaggerated their wins and had selective amnesia about losing streaks. And they justified their adventures in any way they could so that they could at least say they had broken even.

It was what Frank was doing. He knew that the business was not a success, but at the same time, he wouldn’t admit that it was a failure. The venture at least gave him bragging rights back in New York and New Jersey. While the joint venture did not generate profit, he could tell everyone how wonderfully well things were going for him in the Far East. The result of such a pattern of behavior was that even more foreign companies were jumping onto the bandwagon. “If those guys can do it, then so can we,” the competition would say.
