I'm running Fedora 25 WS (GNOME) with wayland on a Dell XPS 15 9560. I've got bumblebee with managed repos installed and shit worked great in the past. Latest kernel update 4.10.15 also seemed to work but yesterday GNOME Software showed nVIDIA driver update and I installed it. Now laptop becomes completely unresponsive after login or after waiting to long on login screen. Older kernels same problem. Rescue kernel works but has short 1~2sec freezes. What do?

If you've been using that USB drive in windows, it'll be formatted in either fat, NTFS or exfat. Free GNU/Linux implementations of all those filesystems exist. Depending on your distro of choice, it'll work out of the box or you'll need to install some package first, but you can access those files just fine.

At the current job I can expect to get around 3-4 times what a 3-4 room flat in quiet places near the city would cost. Mac is GNU/Unix, I thought it was close enough.

I don't know what other people's ideas of having a mac are, but for me the idea is that it's the mandatory work computer as provided by the company.

It doesn't matter much, don't listen to the memesters. Debian works fine too even if you're retarded, unless you're actually braindead - Ubuntu does try harder to appeal to those types of people who switch to Linux but still want to basically use Windows.

The only thing that's heavy on the hardware is the desktop environment. I don't know what Ubuntu offers as options nowadays, but debian only offers gnome or KDE during install, both of which are pretty heavy. You'll want xfce for something light but practical. However, a desktop environment is a piece of software light any other, you can change it and install another one. If, however, you feel that you're too retarded to even do that, get Xubuntu (which is basically Ubuntu with Xfce).

Ubuntu is a derivative of debian, so all their packages are compatible, there's no worries there. Repositories might differ but they both have fuckhuge official repos so you'll basically never have problems.

They both have graphical installers, and for both of them you can basically choose all the defaults and click "next" if you don't understand something, and you'll be fine.

I have a question. I have a 2.1 sound system (2 speakers and a subwoofer) that are connected to a central hub type thing that is plugged into an audio out on my sound card. The only profiles available in fedora atm are 5.1 and 4.0, neither of which are correct for my speakers. However, 5.1 causes some tracks to drop when listening to multi channel audio, and 4.0 makes it work nicely. The big thing is that 4.0 profile doesn't account for a subwoofer. It is seen as analog by the os, so my question is this:

Hey, there is something I really hate on Linux, the so called buff/cache. I only have 3GB of ram and the buff cache is occupying 572MB right now. It started occupying memory when an extension on Firefox downloaded a few dictionaries. I've been searching for awhile about this, and I've found that I should leave Linux manage however it thinks the memory is better used. But the thing is, it just keep increasing and decreasing the buff/cache nonsensically. I'm not using anything right now that needs such thing. My ram keeps maxing, which triggers my poor swap partition, and everything becomes slow. Now, I've tried dropping the caches already a few times, but it does literally nothing. Yes, I know rebooting would fix this, but I'd like to be able to manage the cache/buff manually. I tried killing Xorg to see what happens, and htop shows only mpd using 2% of memory. The buff/cache isn't changing though, it's like the memory can't be freed unless shutting down everything. Is this a bug?

I've installed it multiple times and ran it for months. I can see the appeal for edgy teens wanting a customized system but I can't understand why anyone would seriously use Arch for anything productive. AUR is a poorly maintained hobbyist repository where people abandon packages all the time. As a result, many packages I need are actually way more outdated on Arch than on other distributions. Updates also break software, sure the situation can be fixed pretty quick but if I'm working I don't have time for that shit.

I'm attempting to get my feet wet with Linux. Just installed Debian 8/GNOME on pic related, but it felt extremely sluggish. Just as bad if not worse than the version of Windows 7 Embedded I had on previously.

If you want your system to be a hobby and enjoy the little tinkering then sure, go for Arch. It's a good distribution for that. Debian is easier to use than Ubuntu. You don't need to mess with the PPA:s as the repository has like 60,000 packages. As for the installation, just make sure you have unallocated space on your hard drive and Debian will automatically install itself into said unallocated space.
