Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you proprietary slave? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class at Hardvard, and I've been involved in numerous free software projects, and I have contributed to over 300 core-utils for GNU. I am skilled in Lisp and I'm St. IGNU-cius, saint of the Church of Emacs. You are nothing to me but just another unethical non-free software advocate. I will distribute the fuck out of your source code with freedom the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit about me and the GPL on the internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my colleagues at FSF and your binaries are being reverse engineered right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your copyright. You're fucking dead, kid. Free software can be anywhere, anytime, and it can ensure your freedom in over four ways, and that's just with the GPLv2. Not only am I extensively skilled at hacking, but I have access to the source of the entire GNU userland and core-utils and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable proprietary code off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what ethical retribution your little "clever" program was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have ensured your users' freedom. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit free as in freedom all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

I'm running Fedora 25 WS (GNOME) with wayland on a Dell XPS 15 9560. I've got bumblebee with managed repos installed and shit worked great in the past. Latest kernel update 4.10.15 also seemed to work but yesterday GNOME Software showed nVIDIA driver update and I installed it. Now laptop becomes completely unresponsive after login or after waiting to long on login screen. Older kernels same problem. Rescue kernel works but has short 1~2sec freezes. What do?

If you've been using that USB drive in windows, it'll be formatted in either fat, NTFS or exfat. Free GNU/Linux implementations of all those filesystems exist. Depending on your distro of choice, it'll work out of the box or you'll need to install some package first, but you can access those files just fine.

Going to get my Masters in around a year. What do? 2 offers so far:

Stay at current research institute
>coworkers use Ubuntu and Vim
>software I develop released under proprietary license
>downtown, lots of shit to do after work but annoying traffic
>good pay
>big comfy 3 man offices
>Python and C++ (computer vision)

Switch to smaller research institute
>coworkers use Arch and Emacs
>software might be released under free license (have to check)
>industrial area, fuck-all to do but easier to get to
>only like 70% as much monies
>C (firmware development, embedded Linux)
>fellow student works there and loves it

Both jobs come with flexible work hours though the smaller institute seems to be more laid-back.
>>
>>60480903
How much pay are we talking for each? I would go with the second one personally, especially if the software they're releasing is libre.
>>
>>60480980
>How much pay are we talking for each?
Meaningless to post numbers since cost of living is different in different countries and areas. At the current job I can expect to get around 3-4 times what a 3-4 room flat in quiet places near the city would cost. More than enough to live comfortably in any case, except I can go to race tracks only half as often with the lower paying job I guess.

they call it 'cool' because you type a few commands and let scripts install the os for you, rather than it being a 'click here to install' thing. it's really nothing too interesting. if you have found a distro you're comfortable with, it's best to stick to it.

The parts of your code that came from other sources should be marked and attributed as such. These sections are still under their respective licenses and that should be noted as well. The only code under a new/different license is that which you authored and will be under whichever license you choose.

You can't rope everything together and re-license the whole thing as one.
>>
It says like this on the Apache web page

"Apache 2 software can therefore be included in GPLv3 projects, because the GPLv3 license accepts our software into GPLv3 works. However, GPLv3 software cannot be included in Apache projects."
>>

Apache 2 is under a very permissive license and GPL code would force them to license the entire project under GPL.

It's a one way street. You can take code from apache 2 and put it in a GPL program without problems, but if you take GPL code the entire program must be under the same license, you can't have GPL code in an apache program and still keep the permissive license.

Mac is GNU/Unix, I thought it was close enough.

I don't know what other people's ideas of having a mac are, but for me the idea is that it's the mandatory work computer as provided by the company.

I did some looking and haven't found anything practical, so maybe I'll just run a VM. Even shitty applel specs should be able to handle a tiling window manager, perhaps even better than the native super-fancy animated one.

Is higher end hardware useless generally with gnu/linux desktops? I was considering gettinf a new ssd (250gb) and using my old 128gb one for some distro. I know its not top end but ive got a fx8350 and a hd7970. On windows i use it to play a few games, mainly quake and starcraft.

more security features enabled by default, more up to date packages without fussing with the repos like on debian, more user-friendly by default also, get rid of the gui tools you don't want & shit to remove the ""bloat"" that ubuntu has. not much of a reason to use debian when ubuntu exists.

>>
>>60486436
no. install a lighter DE, such as LXDE or Xfce, and it will be exactly the same. I use Lubuntu myself and never had a problem. Xubuntu will be good too.
>>
>>60486454
Is the installation method this weird with all the linux variants?
Is there one where I can download an installer and it just works?
Ubuntu is the best when it comes to software, right? Or are the distros incompatible with eachother?
>>
>>60484662
>how did you people convince yourselves making the switch was worth it
Microsoft products are now completely unusable, there's no other choice but to switch. I put linux on an old laptop and I'm learning it there before I do a clean install on my PC. I will probably take me month to get to a point where I'm relatively comfortable with it and years to get to the point where I know it well but what other choice is there?
>>
>>60486475
most distros are compatible with eachother. ubuntu has a graphical installer with it, it's designed to be user friendly from the get-go.
>>
>>60486500
Then I will get that.
But the system requirements are higher than what I have. will the lighter DE fix that?
>>
>>60486436
It doesn't matter much, don't listen to the memesters. Debian works fine too even if you're retarded, unless you're actually braindead - Ubuntu does try harder to appeal to those types of people who switch to Linux but still want to basically use Windows.

The only thing that's heavy on the hardware is the desktop environment. I don't know what Ubuntu offers as options nowadays, but debian only offers gnome or KDE during install, both of which are pretty heavy. You'll want xfce for something light but practical. However, a desktop environment is a piece of software light any other, you can change it and install another one. If, however, you feel that you're too retarded to even do that, get Xubuntu (which is basically Ubuntu with Xfce).

Ubuntu is a derivative of debian, so all their packages are compatible, there's no worries there. Repositories might differ but they both have fuckhuge official repos so you'll basically never have problems.

They both have graphical installers, and for both of them you can basically choose all the defaults and click "next" if you don't understand something, and you'll be fine.
>>
>>60486518
Lubuntu will be fine for it. once it's installed, remove the tools & packages you don't need to slim it down.
>>
>>60486518
You sound like you really don't want to fiddle around - just get Xubuntu then, and you'll be fine.

Lubuntu is even lighter, but unless you have a literal toaster consider Xubuntu because it is more full-featured - IIRC Lubuntu is really focused on being as barebones as possible.

I have a question. I have a 2.1 sound system (2 speakers and a subwoofer) that are connected to a central hub type thing that is plugged into an audio out on my sound card. The only profiles available in fedora atm are 5.1 and 4.0, neither of which are correct for my speakers. However, 5.1 causes some tracks to drop when listening to multi channel audio, and 4.0 makes it work nicely. The big thing is that 4.0 profile doesn't account for a subwoofer. It is seen as analog by the os, so my question is this:

Does that central speaker hub take care of all the mixing? Is my subwoofer still working properly or am I going to end up breaking it this way? Why does 4.0 work if 5.1 doesn't if all this is the case?

Hey, there is something I really hate on Linux, the so called buff/cache. I only have 3GB of ram and the buff cache is occupying 572MB right now. It started occupying memory when an extension on Firefox downloaded a few dictionaries. I've been searching for awhile about this, and I've found that I should leave Linux manage however it thinks the memory is better used. But the thing is, it just keep increasing and decreasing the buff/cache nonsensically. I'm not using anything right now that needs such thing. My ram keeps maxing, which triggers my poor swap partition, and everything becomes slow. Now, I've tried dropping the caches already a few times, but it does literally nothing. Yes, I know rebooting would fix this, but I'd like to be able to manage the cache/buff manually. I tried killing Xorg to see what happens, and htop shows only mpd using 2% of memory. The buff/cache isn't changing though, it's like the memory can't be freed unless shutting down everything. Is this a bug?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux operating system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

Unetbootin.

Also, stop listening to the idiots recommending Mate and shit... just take the easy way out and start with GNOME. It's a bit mobile-y but its beautiful and it works.

What cool stuff can I do with the "free" HDD? Open to meme-worthy suggestions, it's like 340GB anyway.
Or should I just set up some ad-hoc raid for backups?

Arch is kind of shit. It's for the people who want to customize their installation and waste hours and hours with their system.

Try Fedora, Ubuntu GNOME or Debian.

I've installed it multiple times and ran it for months. I can see the appeal for edgy teens wanting a customized system but I can't understand why anyone would seriously use Arch for anything productive. AUR is a poorly maintained hobbyist repository where people abandon packages all the time. As a result, many packages I need are actually way more outdated on Arch than on other distributions. Updates also break software, sure the situation can be fixed pretty quick but if I'm working I don't have time for that shit.

Sure it's minimal and fast but I need ~2k packages for work anyways (less on Arch as the distributions I use split the packages unlike Arch) so I can't just sit and watch at my <500 packages Arch neofetch all day.

>>60489968
I've yet to try arch experience. how do I convert from zesty mate to arch? I tried the uneboootin over my terminal shit crashes and wont even mount my usb, is there another alternative? can anybody provide some reading material that will make me well versed over the weekend?

Maybe you are right about work, but it's great as your personal home os. Also you can always compile latest versions of packages.

I'm attempting to get my feet wet with Linux. Just installed Debian 8/GNOME on pic related, but it felt extremely sluggish. Just as bad if not worse than the version of Windows 7 Embedded I had on previously.

What should I try next? Really just want it to be able to quickly shitpost and play YouTube videos.

If you didn't like GNOME, don't go for it. Personally I love MATE. The reason I recommended GNOME was because "it just works".

If you want your system to be a hobby and enjoy the little tinkering then sure, go for Arch. It's a good distribution for that. Personally I don't like Arch or the community but I can appreciate it for what it is. In fact, you can just go straight for Arch and if you don't feel like installing it just get Antergos. There's barely any reason to install Arch "the real way" anymore. Antergos is great. Just avoid Manjaro the userbase is full of kids and the devs are incompetent.
>>
>>60490080
Arch + XFCE, if you are willing to spare some time on configuration.
Void Linux is also an option.
>>
>>60490080
Reinstall Debian with Xfeces4.
>>
>>60490097
I wouldnt mind gnome. I think mate, gnome, kde neon are very good looking. I just want my shit to werk now and not glitch when all I'm doing is a command on bash. I went balls deep getting rid of windows, and I'm not going back
>>
>>60490144
If you want a working system asap, don't go for Arch. Even if most people on the board could set up a nice, working Arch in an hour, I doubt you can. If you think you'll enjoy the challenge, then go for it. You'll learn a bit, that's for sure.

If all you care about is a working system, I'd recommend staying with Ubuntu. Personally I've had lots of troubles with Ubuntu and for me the best out-of-the-box experiences have been Fedora and Debian with either GNOME, Xfeces or MATE.

>>60489693
Linux is the same on all distros.
>>
I'm retarded and trying to choose between Debian and Ubuntu.
I know Ubuntu is more retard friendly but Debian is my likely end distro and if it's not too hardcore for a retarded winbabby such as myself I'd like to start and end my journey in the same install.
>>
>>60490622
debian is really easy to install
>>
>>60490080
threw manjaro openrc on an aging htpc. i bet it will do the trick. It's more friendly to newcomers to GNU/Linux than arch
>>
>>60490637
In that case I shall enter the fire and return anew, shiny and chrome.
>>
>>60490622
Debian is easier to use than Ubuntu. You don't need to mess with the PPA:s as the repository has like 60,000 packages. As for the installation, just make sure you have unallocated space on your hard drive and Debian will automatically install itself into said unallocated space.

Also, welcome! Debian has been my favorite distribution for years.
