Lol, just found this on Reddit, got a good chuckle

>I'm 15 years old, installed Gentoo, when I was 12 (I remember being too young to join the forums) and stayed, because it was awesome. Binary distros was hard to manage, and updates were slow. Gentoo just worked. I use it for desktop, hardest part is resolving the conflicts, otherwise it is really easy to maintain, even if you use patches or want the latest version of some packages. I like, that I can filter licenses in the make.conf, so it is not going to install proprietary software, without my awareness.

Pay toilets are nasty, and ought to be illegal. Those of us who are not poor can afford the price, if we accept the practice; poor people can't. To deny people access to a toilet when they need one is nasty and degrading.

I have concluded that the least we can do, to eliminate pay toilets, is to avoid giving them money. Instead of paying them, I go to great lengths to find some other toilet.

Please join me in rejecting pay toilets firmly.
>>
I asked in the previous thread and it got derailed by toilets.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 17.04 on a thinkpad t470 and on the livecd it says I'm connected to wifi, but I have no internet. I plugged in the ethernet cord and it just loads forever, no connection. I'm the same guy who tried to install debian and got nowhere. I don't really know what to do and I'm pissed. Wat do?

basically this
it isn't even a large program. compared to runit, it's pretty large (about 15 times as many lines of code), but it really isn't very big (300K lines for the entire suite, including udev as of a few years ago). Meanwhile, the kernel and firefox+chromium are both nearing 20 million, Xorg has millions. If you actually care about bloat and want to avoid overcomplicated, insecure software, you should be using tty or wayland instead of X.

personally I prefer a rolling release model like arch. it's more work to do the initial setup and you have to pay attention to things when updating but with aur virtually everything that can run on linux is available and relatively current

No, it's not. Every distribution can be a "daily driver" idiot, since it's completely subjective. Therefore it's not a "concise description".
People who use that phrase blatantly signal that they don't intend to use any distribution, that they're only in it to write a few words in their terminal emulator once in a while when they boot from their Windows computer into their Linux distribution.
>>
>>60459709
It isn't trivial.

I call it a Linux distribution. Everything you install on your computer is a "daily driver". Of course that implies that you're a normal person and not someone who does this >>60459730.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>>
>>60459800
>only in it to write a few words in a terminal emulator
that implies that anyone who doesn't heavily use the terminal isn't really using linux, if that's not what you meant to say then work on expressing yourself better, if it is then my comprehension is spot on
>>
>>60459828
Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system “Linux” is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.

It is right and proper to mention the principal contribution first. The GNU contribution to the system is not only bigger than Linux and prior to Linux, we actually started the whole activity.

However, if you prefer to call the system “Linux/GNU”, that is a lot better than what people usually do, which is to omit GNU entirely and make it seem that the whole system is Linux.
>>
>>60459861
>and make it seem that the whole system is Linux.
But the people that refer to GNU/Linux as just Linux do not think this. In certain contexts it is OK to use Linux or GNU/Linux. For example in this thread I will say GNU/Linux or else I bait the copypasta guy, in a social setting IRL I will use Linux, because otherwise the person I'm talking to has no idea what I'm talking about when I say "GNU/Linux"
>>

Although the developers of Linux, the kernel, are contributing to the free software community, many of them do not care about freedom. People who think the whole system is Linux tend to get confused and assign to those developers a role in the history of our community which they did not actually play. Then they give inordinate weight to those developers' views.

Calling the system GNU/Linux recognizes the role that our idealism played in building our community, and helps the public recognize the practical importance of these ideals.
>>
>>60459889
But even so, then I have to off on a tangent and explain what GNU is, and explain what Linux actually is. It's a waste of time honestly and, most likely the person I'm casually talking to isn't interested.

If your words don't reflect your knowledge, you don't teach others. Most people who have heard of the GNU/Linux system think it is “Linux”, that it was started by Linus Torvalds, and that it was intended to be “open source”. If you don't tell them, who will?

nvidia drivers are proprietary/closed source which is annoying, but they work decently. Maybe a little worse than AMDGPU/Mesa drivers, but they aren't terribly buggy. So you do have a DE, but it doesn't look like you'd expect it to? What DE are you using?

Exactly.
Things like gnome depend on systemd, which is why the latest version of gnome (3.24) works on distros without systemd, like Void and Gentoo. Logind depends on systemd, and elogind works on both those distros as well. Udev is integrated into systemd now, yet udev/eudev works fine on every non systemd distros.

That isn't the problem. Making separate partitions is good for several reasons but not a requirement. The default installation should work.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about having vim run non-interactively according to some script and I have no clue how to do that, but you might be interested in vipe from moreutils as a different approach:

SYNOPSIS
command1 | vipe | command2

DESCRIPTION
vipe allows you to run your editor in the middle of a unix pipeline and
edit the data that is being piped between programs. Your editor will
have the full data being piped from command1 loaded into it, and when
you close it, that data will be piped into command2.

How much do you know about partitions?

If you're aware of what they are: the installer will give you options to e.g. shrink the windows partition, then create a new one (or several) in the empty space where you'd be able to install Debian. Or, if you want to nuke windows, you can just install it to the windows partition - you'll probably need to re-format it to ext4 or whatever.

If you don't know about partitions: it's good to know, look it up a bit.

Essentially yes, at a high level.

It can help to install your system on different partitions - e.g. have a separate for /home (this will allow you to reinstall the OS without touching your files), and also separate /boot and / - this allows you to encrypt the entire OS as well (on /) without touching /boot (because booting from an encrypted /boot is a whole other can of worms).

All of that is optional, of course - you can just throw everything into one partition if you want.

As you can see by e.g. the workspace manager, I'm not going for a 100% faithful recreation, but if I get the time and motivation I'll touch it up later.

In simpler terms: using a separate /home allows you to completely separate the OS and files. Since the filesystem is basically standard on *nix systems, you could even install a completely different distro, and all your files would be completely untouched.
Recent versions of windows try to keep your files when you upgrade, but they basically look at the folders and e.g. copy over your Documents folder, stuff like that. Because it's all on the same disk, stuff can stil go wrong. Using different partitions completely decouples the two.

The rest doesn't matter too much - in fact it probably doesn't matter at all if you aren't going for full disk encryption.

Anyway you can always change all that later.

I don't have numbers, but I wouldn't doubt that we are probably talking single digit pixels that really tighten it up on Windows. The start menu button also needs to be more centered. Its placement looks skewed which is the largest thing that sticks out.

>>60466501
Too complicated.
I will nuke it.
>>
>>60466709
Oh yeah definitely nuke windows. But that doesn't mean you can't use a couple different partitions for your debian.

If you really don't feel like getting into that, by all means, don't. Your system will be perfectly usable. But I'll just say that the installer is pretty helpful - it's not some dark magic wizardry, you just need a general idea of what you want to do.

If it's your first *nix install, though, I won't blame you for just skipping all that.

ok listen here:
>have 5 machines with arch
>it just werks
>make a headless server
>coredumps, segfaults and illegal hardware instructions everywhere
>pacstrapping/reinstalling all packages fixes it
>memtest86+ all the ram, OK
>SMART is OK, check the whole disk with software, OK
>cycle of coredumps begins anew
What the hell is happening to me?

Install ubuntu

So basically the problem you describe is that it works on live but not when you finish the installation? Is that what you're trying to say?

Please be a bit more specific. What hardware is failing? Maybe you missed a crucial step you usually don't think about since you're used to install arch systems?
>>
>>60467085
It's already installed, it works.
Usually after a reboot a random application will behave eratically or fail to load a library. No "obvious" hardware is failing at all.
>>
>>60467115
well, that's pretty spooky

E.g last reboot mpd started taking 100% CPU on one core and stayed unresponsive, slowed down ssh significantly until I killed the process. I tried reinstalling mpd but pacman got an illegal hardware instruction. Then I just ran:
#! /bin/sh
for pkg in $(pacman -Q | cut -d' ' -f1); do
pacman -S --noconfirm $pkg
done

twice to fix it.
I hope going to LTS will fix this. I don't have a clue what's happening.
Here's the most recent dumbass error:
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/bumblebee-status-git- 445.9b0c9a4-1/desc: No such file or directory
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/pulse!udio-alsa-2-3/desc: No such file or directory

That is malware.

For a toilet to be free you need the four essential freedoms.
>The freedom to use the toilet as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
>The freedom to study how the toilet works, and change it so it works as you wish (freedom 1).
>The freedom to redistribute toilets so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
>The freedom to distribute your modified version to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes.

Just installed XFCE in Gentoo, but I have a problem. Non GTK applications look like complete AIDS. How can I fix this? For example Mousepad looks like ass

Use GUI only when mandatory (web, mail, image, videos) and use CLI for everything else.

My XTerm always look sexy.

Ok. Dear anon,
I am waiting for the day when the abomination called QT has disappear. Please be gentle and never talk me about that piece of craps, made by worst code monkeys on earth, even web devs are competent compared to QT developers.
