Is 4Gb enough to run modern 3D programs like Zbrush and Maya?
Looking in to getting a cheap tablet to work outside or away from my PC while it is rendering.

Is it worth $150 to upgrade from 4gb to 8gb?

On my desktop PC I idle for around 2gb to 3.5gb.
>>

>Is it worth $150 to upgrade from 4gb to 8gb?
Isn't that enough to upgrade to 16 or even 32? Two sticks of 8 GB Corsair LPX DDR4 are below 150 dollars. 4 GB seems very little for Maya and Zbrush.

I'm going to dualboot Windows and Linux, with each of them getting their own drive. Which file system should I use for Linux (most likely a Debian derivative) and will WIndows be able to see the Linux drive (I'd rather if it couldn't)?

It can see the drive but can't read the files, It can read the files if you install the special ext drivers.

It may or may not list the linux in my computer thingie. If it does, you may hide it.

Two questions. One stupid and one not as much.

To change my Desktop Environment do I just
 pacman -R sddm plasma
? and install whatever I want?

Should I relid my CPU with super glue on the outside corners or silicone sealant on the inside perimeter of the heat spreader.

I am still looking for a cheap vps.

The latest suggestion, scaleway, was a failure. They don't have any mechanism to verify ssh fingerprints out of band. You have to blindly accept them. So I am not using scaleway shit. They even have open issues about this opened at 2015.

How does a Nvidia GT 710 performs for playing 1080p@60fps and 2k videos?

I am planning to buy one for that task only, I dont CAD, edit video or play any video games, so I just wanna spend the necessary amount of money.

Save and buy a GTX 1050 if you plan to play 2k or high bitrate videos.
>>
>>60453357
you have probably a 1/10 chance of putting it back together and not having issues.

issue 1 : you need a torque driver for the screws, they need to be perfectly tightened at a specific torque.

issue 2 : the inside of a hard drive is like a cleanroom area, you don't want even a speck of dust in there or you can get all sorts of issues
>>
>>60453554
without OC your 710 simply wont run 1080p@60, even on ultra low settings. it can barely even pull off 720p@60 on ultra low.

Get a 900 series if you wanna run 1080p smoothly, anything higher will require a 1000 series.

Only thing security related is that the virtual machine almost works as a separate machine with the same IP , So if you download some dodgy shit you'll be fine, If it were to be a dual boot then high chance of being fucked.

I for the first time in years am worried I might have a virus. First things first I'm running windows 10, yes I know it sucks, I only use it for games and porn. I was on an unscrupulous porn site and a pop up different than the usual appeared. It was one of those obviously fake 'Microsoft/Google security warning' things but the next thing I know there was one of those notifications in the bottom right of my screen saying windows defender had detected malware and removed it, along with the notification sound and everything. That panicked me enough that I just shut off my computer via the power button and turned it on a few minutes after.

Everything seems hunky dory now and I dont even see anything out of the usual in task manager. Now my question is: is it possible to fake those little windows defender notifications? Or was it the real deal? I'm by no means a windows power user so I'm unsure how to proceed.

"only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time"
"please close the other application e.g. 'update manager','aptitude', or 'synaptic' first"

You would be better off getting a hdd for storage then another ssd.The price per gb is lower with a hdd then a ssd.
The only raid you could do is 0 or 1,both of which dont help you get more space.
Buy a 2/3/4 TB HDD.

This is what my SSD looks like without any pictures, videos, or games on it.

The standard way to create a RAID 0 destroys all data in the process.

You'd need to image everything off to another drive, create the RAID, then restore the image. Which is also made more difficult by standard imaging tools mostly being Linux based, which doesn't support the common on motherboard "fake" RAID.

Vista was fine on release if you had good new hardware, the problem was the minimum specs were unrealistically low, and driver support for old hardware was terrible.

XP on launch had pretty mixed reviews depending on the point of view. For people coming from 98/ME it was a pretty big improvement in stability/performance, except for where shitty drivers broke everything. Also hardware requirements for a decent experience were also a lot higher, again like Vista a system that just met the minimum requirements really wasn't enough. For the people coming from 2000 it was pretty much a skin on something that was already fine. The introduction of requiring activation was universally hated.

ME was generally disliked as it was less stable than 98SE, higher hardware requirements and dropped a lot of DOS compatibility.

2000 was generally liked, added a lot of features that NT4 was missing including USB, far better plug and play.

98SE was good, not a huge jump from 98, just a few extra features and generally better stability.

Before that, don't really know.

thing is, it starts just fine in windows safe mode

Why is it that even though my HDD can write 120+MBs and speed tests clock my internet at 15-30MBs NONE of my downloads with ANY client or platform can exceed 1.2MBs?

Browser DLs, torrents, Steam, any app at all. They are ALL capped at 1.2MBs. I used to think this was the max write speed for my HDD but I just copied a 34GB file from my SSD to my HDD and the SSD used 20% of its speed to transfer 120+MBs to my HDD, who said it was using 100% of its speed.

Connection speeds are measured in bits and download speeds in bytes. 15 mbits is roughly 1.8 mbytes, so you're pretty close to mx with 1.2 There is probably some base 10 to base 2 fuckery going on too which explains the rest of the difference.

Does this even sound like normal download speeds? I was worried my ISP was screwing me out of speed because I'm on the cheapest plan.

Either choice doesn't bother me, but considering AM4's "4 year" lifespan, would the X370 be worth it over the B350, then possibly upgrading CPU at the end of the lifespan? Or would it be better to get a stronger B350 for cheaper than the X370?

>>60458911
1 byte = 8 bits. File sizes are usually measured in bytes and bandwith in bits.

Also computers use base two numbering while advertisers often use base ten numbering. So a ten megabit connection is actually only 9.53674 megabytes etc. For this reason your torrent program reports mebibytes instead of megabytes. This is also the reason why a "1 terabyte" drive doesn't actually have enough space for one terabyte of data.

>>60461518
I've heard about bootable virus scanners, you could scan the disks with one of those. I've no idea if they're reliable or not, but I guess they're better than nothing. Use them to scan the drive once and a proper antivirus program after that.

My girlfriend is getting a new work laptop and asked me for advice. It seems like she can choose whatever she wants and there doesn't seem to be any strict budget (though I would guess they would complain if it were more than $2000 or so). She doesn't have super heavy requirements but wants something with some processing power (it will probably run some research programs but nothing too fancy) and wants some versatility. She's previously used a mac but since the new ones have virtually no ports other than usb C (except the MBA which is over 2 years old) she's probably going for linux (with windows dual boot for compatibility) now instead.

After looking around a bit the T470s seems like a good option as the thinkpads are usually okay quality, it has good specs and lots of ports such as HDMI which is nice to have for presentations etc. Are there any obviously superior alternatives? The X1 seemed pretty shitty in comparison to the T470, the elitebook alternatives were heavier and didn't have the same customization (that I could find). I looked at the XPS 13 from dell as well but it seems like that one has neither hdmi nor mini DP which means you will always need an adapter until usb C becomes standard, but at least it has some USB 3 ports. Any tips?

I need to write a sentence that makes the following point:
>The gate has been moved further towards the parking lot area. This is to avoid that drivers exiting the parking lot "cut people off" because they fear the gate arm could hit the car roof.

By gate, I mean a physical boom, the kind that is colored red and white, and moves up and down. It has been moved because if we let the boom reside in the middle of the exit area, people will get anxious for getting the boom in their car roof. This could cause them to panic and make stupid decisions such as hitting the road when they should have yielded.

English isn't my mother tounge, so I'm having a hard time writing this in a correct, report-y kinda way. Any1 got any gud suggestions?

Question. I have my network set up like this: gigabit net -> router (with gigabit switch) -> my computer.

I plan on getting a NAS, but I am concerned that I'd get significantly lower speeds if I just hooked that up to the router, compared to having all internal drives. More importantly, I'm worried that since my computer is connected to the router with a single cable, copying anything over to the NAS would reduce my net speed.

The NAS has two gigabit ports though. What would happen if I connected one to the router and one directly to my PC? I'd have a sort of triangular network where each of the three devices are connected to the other two with a separate 1gb link.

Would this be a good choice and increase my throughput, so I can max my internet and my NAS at 1 gigabit both?

OS in question is Windows 10, which doesn't support Link Aggregation, so this is the only other way I can think of getting better performance.

Is it because I installed the MS17-010 patch or could I have Adylkuzz ?
And if I have Adylkuzz, it's not a virus right ? So I can save my files on an external hard drive and they won't carry the thing when I copy them back on my pc after I reset it and install linux or whatever people on this board install ?
>>
i installed linux and decided to just start coding and using all the stuff i've learned to do

but linux is kind of intimidating for me to use to start with. i downloaded allegro from the repositories and i want to start coding. how do i get everything started and set up to start writing, compiling, and executing code using c++?

i'm accustomed to being spoonfed the entire process by an IDE

That's what USB was designed for lol. I tried using an old Samsung drive that was formatted on another system on a shitty HP laptop with W10 and it kept saying device not recognized I had to use an internal connector and reboot. Most hotswap bays will require reboot as well depending on how they design them, ones like Vantec, Rosewill etc. are SHIT it's just a straight passthrough but some motherboards won't realize that something is getting plugged in. I've been able to pull files off an HDD with another OS installed on it before and had some drives require formatting which kind of defeats the point. Most newer Intel chipsets (using RST) You may have a better chance with but it still comes down to the mobo vendor.
>>
>>60465360
yeah i get that, but usb doesnt deliver a fasst enough speed in most cases.
>>
>>60465561
Yep USB 3.0 is good but to a certain point most HDD's aren't going to be able to max that out anyways, unless it's an SSD or even an external array. There's a reason I have my storage attached to my network or all my drives attached internally. You can buy an external dock for about $30 for a decent one anyways, but you'd be better off just keeping it internal and possibly disabling that Sata port (if your mobo has that feature) or simply pull the power plug lol

For websites like this with database queries integral to the experience, how is the backend handled? I know a little bit of programming and I'd like to learn this aspect. I'm assuming it's programmed in a database language, but where would the best place be to start for me?

Okay /sqt/, what's the most cheapest modular laptop out there?
Also is t420 one of them?
By modular I mean easily Replaceable parts without going through any hefty gymnastics. The more Replaceable parts, the better
>screen
>keyboard
>CPU
>trackpad
>ram
>battery
>adapters like WiFi and Bluetooth adapters
>the whole motherboard (less likely)
>gpu(less likely)
The laptop should atleast be relevant enough by today's standards.

People complain about Win10 phoning home

Is there no way that outgoing requests to Microsoft can be blocked automatically?

Meaning wangblows phones home as normal, but the request is blocked from actually going through

Possible?

Yup, it's more of an all-rounder's degree, which makes it easier to get a job, that is, if you have good skills. Either way, don't take my word for it....Go ask other people and also /sci/ .

When parens aren't around the function arguments and only one is specified, Scheme interprets that as taking an arbitrary number of arguments and binding them to the variable. Since we don't know how many arguments are specified Scheme puts them into a list, and since the body of the lambda is just x it returns the list of arguments. Here's some examples of using lambda:
(lambda (x) x) ; Takes a single argument and returns it
(lambda (x y) (list x y)) ; Takes two arguments and returns them in a list
(lambda x x) ; Takes an arbitrary number of arguments and returns the arguments as a list

XP was not good on release, mostly because hardware was shit. A lesser issue that Vista had stronger.

ME was disgustingly bad.

2000 was fine.

98 was generally considered great, but had a whole slew of issues.

Hello, is this tech support board? I have a problem with my PC. It's running the latest version of Botnet 10. After a while of intensive work, entering and exiting full screen, Alt+Tab/Win+Tab, my PC becomes unresponsive for a fraction of a second, loses connection, my monitor says "No connection" and turns off for a couple of seconds then it resumes back on, but this time it's a blank white screen. However, it is still responsive. I can close my open windows, I can Ctr+Alt+Tab (and now it turns into a light gray) and if I guess it correctly, I can restart it with the right amount of Tabs. Sometimes, when I restart it, after the loading screen completes, it pops back into a blank screen. I have everything updated from BIOS to drivers. In fact, I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but this stared happening after updating my Nvidia driver. Thank you in advance.

I posted in here yesterday about my struggles to update Windows 8.

I downloaded the update manually from Microsoft's site, stopped the update service, ran it, and it installed a couple updates and restarted.

Then Windows update was working normally so I had it install all 80 critical updates or whatever (not concerned about privacy on this machine).

Update installed, press restart, and now it gets stuck at my bootup screen where it shows the motherboard information.

It just sits there for hours.

Any idea what the fuck?

Be sure you have your drivers or at least know where to get them before you nuke it.

Its a perfect time to experiment with other OS's too if you are up to it.

You know what? Fuck you PayPal.
Who was the brainfucked one who thought it was a good idea to log one out when "idle" for just a few minutes? Are people retarded? I keep wondering if they have ever used the site themselves holy fuck, I can't even send 1 fucking email on their shit help center platform without login out because, I don't know why the fuck?^ it assumes I am fucking idle!
Not only PayPal, but everyone is fucking retarded around me, how the fuck is this even possible? Like at work for example, the faggots supposed to be my "seniors" don't know how the fuck the infrastructure of what they are working with works, every fucking time they get a problem, they don't try to fix it by themselves, they ask for external help! these faggots won't let me fix the shit because they think I'm gonna break it more than it is, what the actual fuck? With that kind of mentality you'll never learn shit.
Fuck this, really. Fuck this shit.
