I actually did this for a long time before i built my pc and honestly it worked but I'll never go back.
It turned my laptop into a strictly desktop pc because of how long it stayed on the charger so taking it anywhere turned useless.
my own fault but it slowly got worse over time so its bound to happen to you.

I use it for a few years, but I'd rather have a regular desktop with two monitors.

I did this with my T420. The dock is super comfy.

I even used the Expresscard slot to hook up an external GPU for muh games. It was good.

Can definitely recommend the dockable thinkpads for something like this.

I have multiple inputs on my monitor and when i don't want to use my desktop, i usually plug my laptop into my monitor

I would go for a laptop that has both decent docking support and of course, no, not a fucking 2011 laptop that you can find for $200. I tried for a while to work with my X220 and that shit is still quite slow to work with despite the SSD upgrade for tasks that I would do on a desktop (and no, I don't mean shit like games or movies)

Really if I get a new PC it might be a laptop, but a decent one, something around the price of an alienware 13, maybe without the bells and whistles.

W530+GTX 960+Dock all at home for video games. I remove the GTX 960 and undock (obviously) whenever I take my laptop to class.
