I've had

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129006

for a few years now. It still functions pretty alright.

Is it considered to be an acceptable keyboard?
>>
>>60418748
Its a rebranded Filco, which means you can replace the controller to make it programmable.
You have two options. Either the Frosty Flake, or the Voice of Reason
>>
>Budget
Up to $300

>Location
USA

>Preferred switch type
What's best for typing. I'd like buckling spring, but I hear that Unicomp has poor QA. So I guess greens.

>Layout
ANSI

>Form Factor
Full, or TKL. Either is fine. TKL would probably be best.

>Backlight
Is there one best for night typing, like f.lux, but for keyboards? If no, then no backlight.

>Current keyboard
Whatever chiclet keyboard is on this laptop.

I also prefer PBT keys.

Don't fall for the K70 RGB meme. It's a waste of money. I had at least 1 dozen LEDs go bad on me. Corsair told me to send it back to them to be replaced. I had to pay for shipping to send it back and now they are telling me they won't accept it and want me to pay for it to be shipped back to me.
Their reason for not accepting is "NO/MISSING WARRANTY SERIAL LABEL". However, I have not removed anything from my keyboard, incurred physical damage to it, or modified it in any way. The only possible way it could be missing a serial label is if they failed to put it there in the first place. Fuck Corsair. I will never purchase anything with their brand name on it again.

Pic related: It's my $150 paperweight I'm letting Corsair throw away for me

Don't fall for the meme!

>>60418830

Programmable? Why?

It functions as a keyboard, is there something wrong with that?

Not trying to intentionally sound like an idiot here when I ask this.
>>
>>60418845
want to go for the topre meme? you can get a realforce or a topre leopold for that price. they both come with PBT keycaps.
otherwise, something with cherry clears is nice for typing but they're harder to find than the usual cherry switches.

>>60418898
with a fully programmable keyboard there's a lot of potential for rebinding keys, such as moving escape to caps lock (for vim), etc. You don't have to rely on software like autohotkey.
>>
>>60418898
To do whatever you want. My keyboard is already programmable so I set a function layer to have a numpad that I can use for alt codes, despite being a TKL. I also made it so that the F keys are actually dedicated media keys. If for some reason I need them I can quickly switch the layer. I also have a few macros set for trading in mmos on that layer. It makes trading a whole lot easier.
>>

Ducky One with PBT keycaps
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2167
The one with white and grey keycaps is out of stock. I have one and the PBT keycaps are nice and thicc.
I also have a model M and I enjoy typing on it much more then the Ducky.

I recently tested out a Logitech G413 (pretty sure it was this one) at a store. Man it's been awhile using a mechanical keyboard that feels like that, feels great. Can any other anons that have/had it confirm the weight of it, light/rather heavy? Also the second USB is only for the USB bypass, it's not required to just use the keyboard itself right?

The LEDs ruin it.

The keys were pretty bad but if you replaced the black plastic outside case of the keyboard as well with another you could've stayed on theme.

But then the LEDs? Just. God. It's ugly. So ugly. Not the good kind of ugly either that's aesthetic, that's just non-ironically ugly.

the reason they're kailh is because kailh makes the hotswappable socket thing but being able to swap the switches isn't all that special in and of itself. and i don't think they're "designed by some guy" they're just kailh switches with light pipes because of the way the LEDs are mounted with the hotswap system.

Almost all the stuff in here always seems so new. Anybody else kind of found what they like and stuck to it for awhile? I haven't changed up anything for a couple of years. Long enough for the ABS to wear shiny smooth on my alphas and my switches and springs to really break in.

Though I do have a nice old 70's terminal coming in the mail that I'm going to build a controller for, just as a fun project.

Because they're trying to sell you something. Never trust anyone who wants your money in exchange for an unproven product.

Lmao, they are selling multiple switches for the same price. Halo true is not the selling point for this board. Autists will buy the board regardless.

cons: cost and the membrane will get mushy over time
pros: more durability
topres are rated at 50 million key presses with no key chatter, while cherry is rated at 0. Plus since the switch is capacitive you can change the actuation distance from 1.5mm all the way to 3
>>
>>60431390
They're fancy rubber domes, totally different sort of beast. What you should ask is what Topre offers for the price over other old capacitive buckling rubber and slider designs or even the lowly common rubber dome.

what's your definition of mechanical? The only purpose of the rubber cups is to provide tactile feedback.

>>
>>60429965
>Are mx blue switches loud?
Not louder than other switches but the click is very high pitched, which makes it quite annoying, to answer your second question.
>>
>>60431725
They're capacitive rubber domes. Completely different beast to mechanical or rubberdome over membrane.
>>
>>60431808
It is. The spring under a topre dome can barely hold up its own weight. It's only there to provide the change in capacitance as it compresses, which the pcb senses.
>>
>>60431610
>Oh god they sound horrible

*fart* *fart* *fart* *fart*

Seriously though tactile Alps style switches feature tactility that is leagues apart from MX switches, and Matias makes modern dampened ones that are quieter than a lot of rubber dome boards

What is /mkg/'s opinion on the CM Novatouch? Looks cheap for toprememes and I'd be able to use the PBT cap set I had for my old keyboard that I sold off.
>>
>>60431623
It can go either way as the rubber ages. It depends a lot on the environment the board is kept in.
>>
>>60432796
They're fine. If you want cheapest toprememes then any old slider and rubber dome on PCB will do the trick. That's a bunch of old BTC's and every keyboard marketed as "mechanical feel".

My opinion is that it's discontinued and in high demand by faggots that want to "novatouch" their realforce boards so good luck finding one.

I don't know. Probably the obsession with lighter weight switches. It's my favorite though. Well, grays are my favorite, but they're basically the same thing with different spring weight. The tactile bump on them is heavy enough that they tend to fuck up at low weights so the god awful browns fill their niche in the low end and probably give people a bad idea of what cherry tactiles feel like.

worth the wait?

Is it possible to get a set of keycaps like that, or do you have to buy 4 or 5 different sets and mix/match the different colors yourself?

huh, maybe it's a placeholder or random stock

reading up on it, I don't think I could be bothered
Blues are loud (i need something quieter than my Browns)
and I also have a horrible problem with my sweat on aluminium surfaces

why must all 60/72/82% mkb's be US layout...

mfw found out there are people with mech keyboards who type under 120 WPM

mfw found out most of your are in a geriatric 60~80 range.

Time to find a more fitting hobby like knitting sweaters or something. Though I'm unsure you are dexterous enough for that.
>>
>>60438921
>>60438662
No-one makes it because people hate it and think it feels horrible
>>
>>60439659
Why do you think owning a mech necessitates fast typing, or that only fast typists can appreciate a mech?
>>
>>60439776

Because paying a lot for a "better feel" is a nonsense meme unless you type fast. Also taking artsy photos of your keyboard while in reality you type like a snail is just silly, period. It's poser behavior.

Imagine a kid getting into playing guitar and immediately ordering the most expensive 9 string because they find regular guitars "unusable". Sure kid, just don't forget to learn to play somewhere along the way.

I'm more bothered by people who have mechanical keyboards and have to look at the keys to type.
>>
>>60439821
>Because paying a lot for a "better feel" is a nonsense meme unless you type fast.
You already said this, so I'm asking why.

>It's poser behavior.
You're the one attributing skill to the kind of keyboard one buys, not me. For me it's about the time spent using it.

>Imagine a kid getting into playing guitar and...
I know nothing about instruments, so can we not use analogies and actually provide evidence for your claim?

>"unusable"
Crappy dome and membrane boards are perfectly usable, I just don't know why I'd bother, given the option.
>>
>>60439821
It sounds like you think all mechanical keyboards cost $200. FYI you can get some as low as 20 bucks
>>
Where do you buy different switches? I want to replace some but they're like a dollar fifty a pop.
>>
>>60440256
You get them from china for like 20 cents a switch. If you don't want to wait a month for shipping winkeyless and techkeys sells some for a higher cost

>You already said this, so I'm asking why.
Because you're imagining shit and falling prey to confirmation bias.

If you sit there stabbing at the keys like a butcher at snail's pace and you're just enamored with the idea of there being springs under the keycaps, you're *imagining shit* bro. It could be anything else that the hivemind convinced you must "feel good". I can very easily imagine it being the other way around - mechanical keyboards never went out of style and they recently came out with rubber domes. There would be keeb nerds orgasming into a coma and insisting everyone should jump ship on mechanicals and hop onto the rubber train.

>You're the one attributing skill to the kind of keyboard one buys, not me. For me it's about the time spent using it.
How about you convince me there is something inherently better about that "tactile feedback" and sounds of trench warfare? Oh you just like it better - dude, if it was made for you, you'd be able to tell why it's better. It's not though. Just like that Ibanez 9 strings is not for the kid who's still struggling with the Paranoid and Smoke on the Water riff.

>I know nothing about instruments, so can we not use analogies and actually provide evidence for your claim?
If you're gonna pretend you don't understand what I'm saying, I'll put it in a way where you can't possible do that anymore: specialized tools are for specialists.

>Crappy dome and membrane boards are perfectly usable, I just don't know why I'd bother, given the option.
And this right here is the entire point. You nerds lack the imagination to spend your money better, so you hop between various circlejerks like mechanical keebs, smartphones, watches, wallets, pocket knives, fucking anime figurines and other equally worthless crap that gives you that consumer rush you use to justify another day of doing fucking nothing special or legitimately interesting.
>>

>only fast typists can benefit from mechs
>keyboards are only a tool, and good tools are used by professionals
>>
>>60440165
If you're a slow typist many of the properties of a mech keyboard just have limited utility for you.
Tactile/audible feedback and mid-travel actuation won't help you speed up much comparatively if you aren't fast enough to already have your next finger in position during the prior keystroke.
Every time you press a rubber dome key you bottom out with much more than the actuation force, by virtue of the dome's resistance disappearing when it collapses. You do that long enough and fast enough and it can lead to RSI in the form of tendonitis. Mech keys resist more as you get closer to bottoming out, effectively braking the impact, and if you use ones with feedback you can lessen it further by reaction or even avoid bottoming out entirely.
>>
>>60440353
And you can't get upvotes on 4chan either. How about you go back, but before that, have a $1000 rubber dome keyboard
>>
You guys do know how to type at least like 90 wpm right? It's trivial even with out proper form. If you use your computer at all you should be able to.
I've been using a computer 10+ hours a day for about 13 years now, since I was 12 and never took a typing class, it's just something you pick up.
>>60440413
My thing is that they just don't use the fucking keyboard. If you use your computer regularly you'll be able to type 100 wpm without much effort.

Are there any keyboard with a big ass enter key like pic related?
Literally all I can find is dick sized ansi shit and ISO, which admittedly isn't that bad. But I'd really want this.
>>
>>60440565

You think you want that, but I've only ever seen one big ass enter keyboard with a normal sized backspace. You're gonna hate clit sized backspace a lot more than dick sized enter.
>>
>>60440565
steel series 6gv2 and 7g
>>
>>60440585
I've been using this layout for a long time on my current rubber dome.
It's the best layout there is.
I always miss the enter key on ansi
>>
What kind of a fucking company name is "steel series" anyway. Series of what? Products? Why are their products not made out of steel then?
>>
>>60440459
Nice. Now go be pretentious somewhere else.
>>
>>60440612

You get used to it. Better get used to that ANSI layout so you can meme effectively. Big ass enter keycap can be hard to find.
>>
>>60440618
Their keyboards have a steel plate in them, but they are out dated. Back then if you want a nice keyboard steel series was one of your options, but now they're lacking when compared to the competition.
>>
>>60440644
He makes perfect sense, you know. The least you can do is learn to type so you don't look like an idiot while you meme your board across various internet hugboxes.
>>
>>60440659

It's kinda sad when you stick with a name like that but then proceed to release plastic shit. If I were them, I'd meme out a steel Sensei, should weigh at least a kilo. Somebody's gonna buy it anyway, I mean, people did buy the original Sensei which is equally stupid.
>>
>>60440596
The 7g looks okay. the only problem with the layout is super modifier missing on the left
I'm not sure about the switches though

>>60440649
You make a reasonable argument, but I'm not planning to change the keycaps
Maybe I go with ansi after all
>>

>If you sit there stabbing at the keys like a butcher at snail's pace and you're just enamored with the idea of there being springs under the keycaps, you're *imagining shit* bro.
None of this is true. I'm not excited that there are springs (I'm using a novatouch right now for heaven's sake), and I'm not hunt-and-pecking either.

>Oh you just like it better - dude, if it was made for you, you'd be able to tell why it's better.
I could, yes. Do you want me to explain why I like my novatouch over some HP OEM board? The stroke is smoother, it doesn't have that lazy squish at the bottom, there is much less wobble, it's more consistent, etc.

>specialized tools are for specialists
It's just a fucking keyboard my man. What specialisation are we talking about here?

>And this right here is the entire point. You nerds lack the imagination to spend your money better...
Again, you presume too much. I'm not into any of those other "hobbies" (I don't consider my mech enthusiasm much of a hobby).

>>60440440
I type at 60WPM, of course I'm not getting all that I can out of a keyboard. I'm not denying this.

Except how would you know they type like shit? And even if they showed off some nice board with shitty typing, who the fuck cares? They could be the type of person to buy something so they get more involved in the hobby, like buying a nice instrument instead of a rental so they commit to learning music theory. Either way its an implication and doesn't matter.
