Just one tip, don't use the chink solder wire that comes with these kits. Spend a couple bucks on a small package of something good (multicore, kester). A good wire will work with any iron, but a shit wire will be shit with anything.

Ok, am considering this setup as my first real audio setup.

There's nothing magic about 2010. It's on a case to case basis.

Sometimes, there's luck. Often, it's shit. My current board is alright noise floor wise, but treble's super weak. My previous board (2012) had a high noise floor.

I got the JVC HARX700 a while back, and have been pretty satisfied with them, mainly in value for cost. Got them for around $50, haven't had any quality issues yet.
However, slugging around with a meter long cord is the biggest drawback, so they've mainly become my desktop headphones.
That's forced me to use some shitty in-ear headphones when I'm out and about since then, which are pretty uncomfortable.
So I'm looking for a nice pair of foldable over the ear headphones that can rest well around the neck.
I'm thinking closed stage, around $40-$75 or so.
Anyone have any experience with these? Have any that worked well for you?

am i right in thinking if i dont want to spend 500+ on a pair of ciem's then the next best bet for me is the carbo tenore or some equivalent?

At first i was thinking shure 215's because of the replaceable cord and i assume you can detach one which is perfect for work, but people say they are way overpriced and sound subpar (for similarly priced headphones).

Then hf5, but while those look durable they are apparently very tinny, not much base. I primarily listen to electronic music and like my base.

My past headphones, that i use while active have been the 10-20$ panasonic, or pistons, or whatever looks best at walmart and i wanted something a little better, but i dont want to spend more money unless i can do it less often.

I've had mine for 4-5 years and the cable hasnt broken, even if it did it isnt expensive to replace.

The ear cushion is awful tho, comfy but i've had to replace them twice now at 50AUD each time.

pls pls, just bend the headband. OPen them up to full size and mostly use your thumbs to bend the metal outwards slightly and hold it for ten seconds. Do it on both sides a couple times and test it. You don't do it in one go, you can do it bit by bit and the band is nowhere near breaking point when you do it. It's so easy and you'll have comfortable headphones right now if you do it. I'm the anon who was going to buy hd 558 for music and vr gaming.
Music is going to be of varied genres, mainly Classical, Electro(would benefit benefit from good bass),
Psychedelic Rock, Modern orchestral suites(might incorporate various modern sounds).
VR gaming is going to be done on HTC VIVE so a good soundstage would be important.
Also they have to be good for ASMR of the ero variety.
So why don't i just buy the hd 558's which i was recommended?
Well so it just so happens that for whatever reason sennheiser no longer ships their 558s on any shops in greece
and they've forced the new 559 version of 558s at a discounted price of 109euros.
So when i asked here about the 559s i was told they gimped them on purpose and i should def try to find the 558
specificly. So my only option for the 558s is overpaying for them (170euros).
Are the hd 598 significantly better than the hd 558 for the use i need them for? Also the source is going to be motherboard
headphone jack(soon Asrock AB350 Gaming K4) which has a decent onboard sound card. From what i see the hd 598
are 50 Ohm headphones so i suppose this means they should work great with this audio source? The price for the hd 598 is

No. In €, it's been sold at 99€ in amazon.fr, and usually gettable at ~130€ in EU amazons.

HD600 would be fine, the impedance has reasonable stability so it'll sound the same. What you might find is that the maximum volume is too low, but that's about it. Do not let this keep you from getting the good headphones.

HD598 do on the other hand have quite the ramp in impedance across frequency, so these do sound different on different sources. Any amp will do, but they do really need one.

Deal breaker... My main motivation for changing headphones is because they sound like shit when loud
and i enjoy listening to music at loud volumes.
I might be able to get my hands on a very expensive amp that is 20years old(maybe more) it works fine,
my father uses it for his vinyl player - speaker setup because he's fixing his other newer amp.
He also has a different one which is the the thousand euros range(similar to pic related) but he told me
it doesn't have ports for me to connect to pc or headphones to so i don't know if there are any kind of options there.
The thing is my father might change his amps next year so i can't really count on buying a headphone for amp use
and just wait, so my plan was to get something that would work well w/o any amp and just buy better headphones
for use with amp/dac setup at a later time.
