Just got a t470 and am ready for my first completely GNU/Linux machine. Came with W10 and I fucking hate it.
I have experience with Ubuntu, used it for a few years, only dual booting with Cuckdows 7/8, but I still feel like a noob and I want to move onto something a little more challenging so I can actually learn about Liniux. I'm considering Arch and Debian. Arch because it seems interesting and I feel like I'll learn a lot, Debian because it's similar to what I'm used to in Ubuntu and because a lot of Ubuntu packages are compatible with Debian.
I'm just worried about fucking up and bricking my nice new laptop. I'm worried about getting lost installing Arch or not being able to get the right drivers in Debian. I could always install Xubuntu or Kubuntu but that'd be lame.
What do you guys think? Do you guys have any tutorials/guides I should look at? How hard to get used to is Arch?

And yes I just copy pasted this question into this thread, FGLT seems close to reaching reply limit and I want a response.

I am legitimately retarded. For real, I am feeling, right now more than ever, the effects of me not having pursued math.

What I want to know is how much money I'd make if I were to put $100 into my savings account every month for the next 30 years if my savings account has a rate of .5%. When I say how much I'd make, I mean the number coming only from interest, not from what I put in. Holy Christ, I can't remember the last time I felt this badly about myself.

Let's eliminate all external factors and assume .05% interest is being made every month. No compound and forget about inflation and whatever might happen in those 30 years. So if I were to continue to add 100 each month, I'm interested in what would be made after 30 years of doing that

Easiest way to do this sort of stuff without thinking about the math is by excel.

0.5%pa /12 = 0.0041% per month, so each month you have 1+0.000041 * what you had the previous month, + the new 100. Stick that in an excel formula using the cell above as previous month, drag down.
>>
>>60398618
Then if you want just the interest, just subtract the 100*360 = $36000 you put in, so $270.6 total.

The main rules are:
>No more than 100mts for all cables
>Cat5 or Cat5e its good for 100mbits/s links, but its prone to noise by power lines so it must be routed on his own conduit.
>Cat6 its good for 1000mbits/s links but the same rules for Cat5 apply(it falls to 100mbits/s though)
>Cat6e or Cat6a are better protected against noise so you can put them along power lines(not recommended though) and still get 100mbits/s

So you need to know what its the speed of your switch (10 don't bother just use WiFi /100 use cat5 /1000 use cat6).

Both wrong. If you make 5 from 100 for one month, then the next month you'll have made 10 from that month because you have 200 in there, then the next month you'll have made 15 that month because you have 300 in there and so on. Which means after 3 months you'd have made a total of 30. That's where I'm struggling to calculate. Because you have to add all the numbers up. I did it manually and it turned out to be 350k after 30 years.

I don't know if you're a troll or not. For one, it's 0.05% per month, so the first month you get 5 cents, not 5 dollars. Second your method doesn't include the interest made on the interest each month. Check the website linked, it has formulas and shit.

Thicker its better(for cables at least), but the cables you posted just lack the word gaming to make them a full meme so i wouldn't if they are good or not because i build my own cables with RJ46 connectors and S/FTP cable, i mean they are good in paper but they don't seem like proper S/FTP to me, in the worst case scenario you will fall gigabit to 100mbits/s.

The rule of thumb when installing wires is to leave extra cable on both ends and to leave a line of galvanized steel wire in case you wanna throw an extra cable in the future.

Saving files directly onto the windows partition while using ubuntu doesn't work.

>Second question
At a lower resolution (1080) and with a decent GPU, you wont have low frames so G-SYNC it isn't as effective as it should(compared to freesync), however at 2K you will have more frame-drops and free sync doesn't like that. so you're screwed either way.

G-sync its a module Nvidia makes and sell to lcd manufacturers, supporting free sync would be counter producing(for (((them)))).

TF2 should run fine if you don't go too aggressive on the graphics settings. The game may dip below 60fps on some scenes and maps due to CPU load but with multicore rendering on, no vsync and fps_max 60, it's playable on either the i3 or i7.

PCSX2 might work on at least native res but don't expect software emulation for graphics to be fast at all, leading to some compatibility issues with the hardware renderer. Some games are more CPU intensive than others.

Overall the graphics paired with DDR4 memory will be a major boost over the old system.

Wait for Ryzen Laptops, or look for an APU.
Intel IGPUs aren't exactly strong but work, but their CPUs are good.

Unless you wanna spend $900-1000 on a laptop with a dedicated GPU.

With GTX cards the last 2 numbers are which version is it and the first/first 2 are the generation.

Example.
GTX 1050m is the low end version and GTX 1060m and 1070m are the high end versions of this generation.

GTX 940m was the lowest end of the last generation, 970-980m were the high end ones.

GTX 800m series were 2 generations ago.
GTX 700m serires 3, and so on.
>>
>>60401640

Sure, I definitely hear what you say, but I don't feel like that is enough for me to be satisfied. This is the first time that I have actually had money to spend on a laptop and could afford something beyond entry-level (if I desire) or second-hand from a friend (with a fried battery or no working battery at all).

Is there anything that you (or anyone else) would recommend to determine how much more computer I'll be getting if I upgrade and so I can make an informed decision and purchase? I'm looking at an online purchase, so I can't test it in person before hand.

Right now, I'm watching youtube videos of people playing games with this i3 7100u processor. I probably won't need the i7 at all, but figuring out how much ram is another consideration.

CPUs are pretty much the same power wise, what has changed with time are IGPUs and efficiency.
Recent ones are cooler, use less energy and are a bit stronger.

The only thing you should look for is, if you wanna a quad core CPU look for QM CPUs.

>would an i7 2000 be faster than an i3 7000?
No, they are literally the same when it comes to power wise but huge difference when it comes to efficiency(i7-2KM is rated to use 35W but I3-7KU is rated for 15W) and integrated graphics.
Also that i3-7100U uses DDR4 which is another boost to graphics and overall performance.

I don't think that I will need a quad-core.

So, if I'm upgrading from an i3-2030M to an i3-7100U, the CPU itself will not make a significant difference in regards to speed (with the exception of unique attributes such as the DDR4). I would also want to upgrade my ram and other things because my current computer is just shy of what I would like to run.

So, I'm working on a .NET tool to manage inventory of something and fetch competitor's pricing, suggesting prices based off of that.

Right now, the program:
>Fetches competitor's webpage as raw HTML (there is no API for price fetching)
>Parses it, looking for key information, eventually pulling the price from the page as a string
>Converts it and does some simple math
>appends it to a file as raw text

For each entry, it fetches two pages and parses them.

So, the process of request page -> parse price -> request 2nd page -> parse price -> calculate suggested price -> write to file happens at almost exactly 75/minute (5 every 4 seconds).

Yes, it is all happening on the main thread, and I have no experience with multithreading or async (basically, I have no idea what I'm doing) and I was wondering where I should start if I'm looking to improve the efficiency. Bulk HTTP requests? More efficient text parsing? Multithreading?

I'm not asking for it to be written for me, just which direction to look in.

Hello
I saw an anon asking the same question I have another time I was in a /sqt/ thread but I couldn't stay long enough to read the answer to it so forgive me asking again please.

I too am looking to upgrade from a pirated Windows 7 (activated with Dazloader, which was NOT downloaded from official mydigitallife forums but somewhere else I don't remember)

I too would like to upgrade to a purchased version of Windows 10 Home 64 bit because my cousin gifted me an official version (the USB-stick version)

However I too wonder if it wouldn't be better to just replace my HDD (I've got two in there, both had Windows on there activated the same way) or perhaps even other parts of my computer to prevent any issues (thinking of maybe Motherboard because flash memory or BIOS memory)

I will explain why I think it could give me problems.

I'm a bit worried the pirated version or the loader I used it with which may not have been completely safe will leave it's tracks on my HDD (read about cleaning HDD only hides the files and allows them to be overwritten but doesn't delete) which then may cause my official version key, which my cousin has bought me, to be duplicated and used in the dazloader program or something else that the pirated version had that's left on either the motherboard or HDDs might rip / duplicate my official version or bug it in a way or another.

TL;DR - Would it be better to replace certain parts of the computer for maximum safety when I want to upgrade from a pirated Windows 7 (activated with Dazloader downloaded not from mydigitallife) to a purchased official Windows 10?

I'm looking very much forward to receiving answer(s), hope someone can help me out, would be great!

>>60402160
I have no experience with web scraping, but fetching is going to take the vast majority of your time because you have to wait for the page to load, unless you are running very complex calculations to generate a suggested price. I would batch page requests in groups of maybe 10 and ensure that it takes 1 second per batch (as a form of rate limiting, so that the competitor doesn't see this as a DoS attack). If you're using C#, you will probably want to use Parallel.ForEach.

I booted in Ubuntu 16.04, and it shows normally log in screen. After I log in, it just shows wallpaper, and one of my sticky notes. It doesn't show any of the unity menus, and it does not detect any keyboard stroke such as alf+F4. However, if I right click on wallpaper, I can lunch terminal, and it detects keyboard strokes. I can lunch nautilus, and reboot machine, and whatnot, but the system is fucked up. What to do? How can this be fixed?

tl;dr I boot into Ubuntu and see only wallpaper, but I can right click and lunch terminal

I have Windows 10 installed in Qemu/KVM with PCI passthrough for vidya and it's working great.

My only problem now is I need a way to share files between the host and the guest.
I could use Samba normally however I have passed through a whole network card to the VM since I have two. This means speeds will be limited to the real network and not optimal.

The other option is having a second virtual card in the VM set to "-netdev user, smb=<dir>,id=vmnic, restrict=yes -device virtio-net,netdev=vmnic"
This sort of gives me what I want with having only SMB access through that card and no internet access through the host card however it's too limited. I can only set one directory and it wont follow symlinks. I also need to run as root to use it.

What do?

Also evdev passthrough is the tits, more guides should mention it.

A mix of Arch wiki, the gentoo wiki and misc blogs. I was picking parts from them that looked the best way to do it.

I'm using Arch and rolled good IOMMU groups so I had no trouble with that part. I decided not to use libvirt, set devices to pass through in /etc/modprob.d/vfio.conf and am using this as my script to start qemu: https://pastebin.com/wk6NDjiv

After a while of having a lot of tabs open firefox starts to act sluggish and freezes freqnetly before just freezing entirely and not unfreezing.

What exactly is going on here? Isn't that a symptom of a memory leak? But FF's memory maxes out at around 2gb when this happens and my laptop has 12gb of ram, and everything else combines ads up to 7gb, so I should still have 2gb free, and my understanding is that memory usage doesn't actually impact preformance till you hit your actual maximum amount of memory.

Do any of the firefox forks not have this problem

>savings account every month for the next 30 years

The details don't really matter. You're already on the right track with your personal finances.

1. Imagine how much money you'd need to spend if some kind of emergency came up.
2. Make a separate account at your bank for emergencies.
3. Put that exact amount of money in there.
4. If you ever withdraw from that account, replenish it first before spending money elsewhere.

If you're in the USA:

5. Start a Roth IRA account. You pay taxes when you deposit money, but not when you withdraw money. It's a great deal.
6. Start a 401(k) account.
7. If you've got a job, get your employer to match your contributions to the 401(k). Your contributions will be automatically deducted from your paycheck, and your employer will also match that contribution, doubling it.

Set up as much automation as possible so that money automagically goes to the savings accounts before you even see it. Not sure if your bank has these features. Mine sure doesn't and it's a pain in the ass. Shit should be easy. Ideally, you need to max out your Roth IRA and 401(k) account contributions. There are some yearly limits on them IIRC.

Whatever money is left, go ahead and spend it. Guilt free. You will become rich. It's pretty much guaranteed.

Now use your free time to become maximum /fit/ and actually live long to enjoy rich faggot status.

If you're not in the USA, look for similar long term investment accounts. Go to your bank (I know, it's a fucking pain in the ass) and talk to people. They will educate you about your options.

This is something you gotta figure out only once in your life, and then you just automate it either via the bank or your mind, and let it run its course.

I have a pretty old Vaio laptop with a 32-bit Core Duo processor and I recently removed Windows 7 and put Ubuntu on it, but it's still painfully slow. I was thinking of putting a 128gb SSD in it, but I'm concerned it won't make a huge difference in the computer's speed because of its age. I pretty much just want to know if the age of the components will bottleneck the SSD. I'm also not sure what version of SATA the motherboard has and I imagine that will be the biggest bottleneck in the system.

With ESET it says you can block a range of ports, but it doesn't say HOW to list the ports.

Comma separated? 137,138,139
Space separated? Slashes? Ampersands?
or like: 137-139
or ???

Anyone know? would like a link to authoritative source too if available.

thank you
>>
>>60407959
You can buy new ram and change it with the ones in it.
But ifyou have the money buying a new one would be the best option. You can get i3 4gb ones for around 350. I5 8gb for around 500 and i7 12gb for around 650.
Otherwise I depending on the age it would be hard to find parts to upgrade. If the mobo uses ddr2 ram you wont find much to make it better.

In all of the routers, firewalls and NATs i have worked with it's a slash like this 137-139, on my modem even if you want to block a single port you have to do it like this 22-22.
This is because under the GUI all those applications use IP Tables as firewall.

So while i cannot provide an authoritative source i can say with great certainly that is - separated.

But the best way to check would it be to test it wouldn't you think?

Of course, you can also lower the timings so you don't loose performance, memory speed its a real meme nowadays, manufactures sell you ddr3 1866 modules at 11-11-11 timings for a higher price than ddr3 1600 9-9-9 while in practice its the same module and you can easily set the timings higher to get 1866 speeds.

I suspect your real problem was nothing to do with Linux:

The XFinity cable modem binds to just one Mac address at a time. If your Vista instance gets a DHCP lease, then you switch to Linux, you'll get nothing. Same thing in reverse.

So power cycle that stupid modem before switching operating systems.
