I've got an old pavilion with a celeron d and 512mb or ram.

Looking though the specs it says that it supports up to pentium D.

It has a socket 775 motherboard. But I was wondering if I could put a core 2 duo on it even tho it doesn't say it's supported.

To the anon that told me it could fry the mobo, why? the pentium d is a literal housefire compare to core2duo.

I would understand if it didn't boot tho

why does Thunderbird store IMAP accounts locally by default? Isn't the whole point of IMAP to only store remotely? I purposefully set up this account on IMAP only to find that it saves messages to disk (including any malicious emails)

Isn't it a major security risk to store any email locally because you can't control what is sent to you or does it not matter too much? I assume that there is no risk because the worst that you can store is HTML which means you actively need to enter info into a phising page sent via email.

Will a 1080 with a slower core clock be faster than a 1070 with a faster core clock?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

I want a quiet, reliable 2tb HDD at 7200rpm for the desktop I'm building.

I know WD is reliable, but all they have that qualifies are WDBlack HDDs and those are loud af.

Then there's Seagate Barracuda, but I'm not sure how reliable or loud they are.

What the fuck could be causing my upload speeds to drop like this? I'm pretty sure it's not my modem, and it's definitely not my router.

green is normal, red is what it's like now.

This keeps happening to me, every few weeks / months now, last time in march it was bad enough I called out multiple techs that themselves couldn't fix the damn problem. Maybe someone here has an idea?

I've been through multiple modems and it doesn't fix the problem. I'm thinking there's something seriously wrong with the shitty Cox cable infrastructure in my area.

The weird thing is the vast majority of the time it works just fine, what I pay for, yet when it goes down like this it stays like it for fucking days, until out of no where it pops back to normal.

Also, here's my modem page. I don't know much about what a good power level / signal to noise is, but the modem page seems fine from what I looked up.

The strange thing is it's almost exclusively my upload speed that's affected. My download speed drops SLIGHTLY, but not to unusable levels like my upload.

look up steel series mousepad on amazon and pick the size you want
generally they are all about the same though unless you buy corsair's gayming rgb mousepad

>>60382975
depends on what you want
a more expensive 1070 would be a better cooler than a cheaper 1080, which would mean better oc'ing if you're into that
I would just check to see if there were benchmarks of the specific high end 1070 and 1080 models you were looking to get
>>
>>60383109
I don't really want to oc. I thought as a rule that a cheap 1080 would outperform an expensive 1070, didn't realize it would be a bit more complicated than that.
>>
>>60383146
not really, if they had different amounts of vram it might be different but because they don't the high end 1070 might be slower but not by an extreme amount
plus you get cooler that doesn't make your pc a furnace and probably rgb bullshit as a bonus

I have a 250 GB SSD 840 EVO and a 500 GB SSD 850 PRO (just bought not yet installed). I am about to reinstall my OS (w7)

before i was considering taking out the 250GB and installing the OS and all my apps on my new 500 GB SSD (have other HDDs for long term storage) but now I am thinking I can use both.

Maybe I can dual boot with the 500GB SSD with windows and 250 GB with linux? I dont really plan to use it, so maybe I can use the 250 GB for the OS and 500GB for games/apps?

So I heard about the idea of encryption with backdoors and I imagined how it could work. What I can't imagine is how it could be done without it being obvious that there is a backdoor.

The way I imagine it is that an encryption stores the password itself with the file using a different, static password to encrypt it, which is the backdoor. The problem with this idea is, couldn't you sniff out backdoors in an encrypting program by just looking at how big the encrypted version of a really small is with a really big password?

What am I missing? It can't be this easy.

In javascript in an array if you search for say numberArray[8][4][5][2][5] it doesn't search through 95635 entries before it finally gets to 84525, it goes straight to 84525, I presume. Or does it search though 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 on the first level, 0,1,2,3,4 on the second and so forth? Does it do the latter with objects?

Is there a way to do this when searching for objects in html and altering them? When you use getElementById you are just giving it the id not its location, it would have to search through everything to find it. Is there a way to avoid that?

If you alter it what happens next? Does it reload the entire page with that 1 tiny alteration?

I have found this and it seems to be what I am looking for, but I have no idea if I am on the right track or out of my depth.

How much of a security risk is it to store messages locally (Thunderbird, IMAP)? Can sophisticated malware do anything sitting locally as a wdseml downloaded from an email server?

BLOGPOST:
It's really bothering me that I ignored security completely when I set up Thunderbird for IMAP. I simply assumed with the general definition of IMAP that there would never be any messages downloaded locally but fucking Thunderbird syncs IMAP to disk anyway apparently by default. All I wanted was to integrate my mail interfaces stored remotely yet Thundershit has been downloading all these messages and with the large volume it's obvious that there are some malicious ones. I only use Thunderbird on shitdows and got a malware flag on something sitting in my locally downloaded inbox.

tl;dr What type of security compromise can WDSEML files sitting in your INBOX folder on your local disk have? I don't need to be spoonfed if there is some good writing about the topic
>>
>>60383402
It goes directly to it. That's why all elements in an array have to be of the same type, because they are all the same length, so the offset to any value is known.

Do you have a habit of spreading your files across your hard drive or something? For example I save everything I download or create in a single folder on my main drive then manually copy it over to a large HDD that I mirror backup on occasion. I guess you're probably looking for something that takes all the thinking out of it and just creates gigs of backup files that you may never need.

I'm fairly stupid when it comes to what I consider the back end of computers. I have my operating system and a few programs on my SSD and then a separate hard drive serves as my storage, so yeah I guess they are kind of spread out.

Basically I'm looking to back up my information so that in the even of a hard drive failure I can just jump right back into things with a fresh drive and a restore.

I do have a separate backup hard drive. I would never back-up within the same drive that would defeat the purpose if it died on me.

I do however want to figure out how to back up both my SSD and my HDD as separate drives but going to the same external hard drive. Eventually I'll get another external or do some sort of Raid configuration but for now, all I have is just 1 external that I can use.

I installed Debian 8 yesterday on a 13GB partition on a desktop I barely use anymore. I chose KDE in the install. I boot the computer up and it takes me to the GRUB (I set it so I could dual boot with Windows 7), I don't touch anything for about 3-5 seconds and then it starts up Debian. The problem is, after it boots up and gets through the command line stuff this gray-dark green screen is what I end up with. There's nothing I can do besides shutting the computer down using the hardware button.

ctrl+alt+f1-f8 switch between different virtual shells, with f7 being the default one.

Since it's only KDE that isn't working, that sounds like it's probably a problem with GPU drivers. You can most likely fix that by installing the proprietary drivers.

Python is widely recommended for complete beginners
Get a good grasp of how the program is understood by the machine, how to write efficient code, how to use objects properly
After this you should have a good enough idea of what you want to do with the skill and where to take it after that, the important thing is that a lot of skills are transferable and adapting to a language like C after learning in Python is relatively easier than learning C from stage 1, for example
>>
>>60385326
Depends on your download speed and write speed. If your HDD can write files to the disk faster than you can download them, there will be no difference. If your HDD writes slower than you can download, then the SSD will be faster.
>>
>>60385326
if your download speed exceeds your HDD write speed, then yes.
So if you're downloading with more than 1Gbit/s then yes, a HDD might potentially bottleneck it.

I've encountered a strange problem /g/ and I need a bit of help. I recently replaced my mouse, I now have a Corsair M65. Often, when I boot up my PC I get a warning saying that there's a fan not spinning. This I believe not to be true, because my cpu fan only has 2 pins instead of 3, so I guess the extra one is for monitoring purposes or something.
My problem arises when I press enter to skip past the message. Previously, before I changed mouse, there was no problem. But with my new mouse, my keyboard doesn't work (though the lights come on). If I remove the mouse, the keyboard lights go off and it still doesn't respond, but if I reset it works without the mouse plugged in.
I've found that it works with my mouse plugged into a different set of USBs but that's taking up one of my 2.0 slots which I'd rather not. Also, I tried turning off the monitoring in BIOS but it still happened the next time I booted.
Sorry for the long post but I don't really know where to start with this.

I want to set up a weekly backup for Windows 10 using this http://pureinfotech.com/schedule-windows-81-system-image-backup/
Which is just adding a weekly task that does
"wbAdmin Start Backup -backupTarget:<TargetDrive>: -include:<WindowsDrive>: -allCritical -quiet"

I'm planning on writing it to a samba drive, and to schedule it when I'm most likely to at least have my PC on. However, sometimes I bring my PC to other places, which means I'm not connected to my samba drive. What will it do then? Will it write to a default location, or just not execute?
And what will happen if I turn off my computer in the middle of a backup? Will it stop mid-way and give me a borked backup? Or will it finish the backup first, and then shutdown?

These are worst case scenarios which I don't see happening often or maybe even at all depending on how well I choose the time, but I obviously want to be careful with my backups. I'll be backing up the backup to an off-site location weekly as well, so in the worst case I'd have a 2 week old backup for Windows, which isn't a disaster for me.

I have uBlock origin with all the filters installed, is there a need to install BetterPrivacy and NoScript? I mean, BetterPrivacy deals with cookies, does uBloc Origin deals with cookies?
>>
>>60386420
I don't think uBlock does anything with cookies. I'd suggest to install uMatrix alongside uBlock though, that does basically the same as NoScript, and can also block cookies by specific sites and stuff.
I'm not really sure how BetterPrivacy would offer additional functionality if you have uMatrix blocking cookies. Also, I suggest self destructing cookies, which deletes cookies of non-whitelisted sites after you close the tab. Helps not breaking sites while still preserving privacy.
I could be very wrong about some of this stuff.

Trying to see if there's a way to block ads on the bottom of the page. Looked up the page source and the ads seem to spawn from a pseudo-random 10-character string that labels the div class, so there's no way to reliably block just a few elements (26^10 combinations?).

Is there a way to whitelist everything but those div elements using Adblock Plus instead of just trying to blacklist 26^10 string combinations? They could always just add more characters so manually blacklisting div names isn't sustainable in the long-run.

Normally I'd leave the ads on but there's been so many weird political ads that it's been getting annoying.
>>
>>60386658
try using uBlock origin instead of adblock plus. adblock plus lets some ads through when people pay them to.
>>
>>60386547
Breaking the XP ram limit of 4GB. Breaking the 2TB drive limitation for data drives via GPT supported added in server sp1. Those are only two benefits
>>
>>60386658
You need to disable acceptable ads. Or just switch to uBlock origin or adblock edge.
>>
>>60386677
>>60386687

I don't understand how UBlock could be more effective at circumventing the pseudo-random string generator than Adblock Plus. It's not a matter of extension, it's a matter of method.

Can you confirm that uBlock successfully removes these ads or am I just going to go through a half dozen other adblockers that similarly fail?
>>
>>60386698
>I don't understand how UBlock could be more effective at circumventing the pseudo-random string generator than Adblock Plus. It's not a matter of extension, it's a matter of method.
It's not. Those particular ads are just whitelisted by the "acceptable ads" filter.

Does that include booting from a GPT-partitioned drive? XP supposedly can work with GPT too if it's not a boot disk.

yes, the higher end versions of 2003 can do up to 64G in 32bit/PAE

you can boot XP from a GPT drive by;
a. ensuring everything needed by XP is located <2TB into the drive
b. making a partition entry for it in the protective MBR of the GPT disk

If you're unsure, just dualboot or use Windows in a VM(with PCI-e passthrough, if you want to play games).

Though I've found that unless there's some windows-only program that you absolutely MUST use, there's very little reason to ever touch the windows partition.
>>
>>60389054

use either channels 1 6 or 11
but desu it wont matter much since many routers automatically choose the least congested of those 3 so you're never going to have a channels to yourself

you want to get in to terminal for some reason? ctrl+alt+F2 will get you to the next TTY session/terminal
ctrl+alt+F1 gets you back

but maybe you want chroot
you boot from usb containing arch
you mount your old arch installation to your /mnt
you make sure /boot is mount too to /mnt/boot if you have separate partitions
and then you
arch-chroot /mnt

and you are in your old installation

Windows cannot read most linux filesystems like ext*, xfs, btrfs, zfs, etc...

For extra protection, you can left the drive "OffLine" on disk management.

Finally beware that windows can lock filesystem for other systems for example if you have a third drive with NTFS and windows has fast boot enabled, then this drive will be locked when you reboot to your linux partition, and so will be the drive with windows, the solution is simple, just disable fast boot or press shift when you're shutting down the windows system.

no.

Highest tempature a CORE reached was 80 degrees Celsius (for like a second), while the package temperature was averaging 65-70. It's an I7-3770k running with a corsair hydro H100i v2. I hear that as long it doesn't run hotter then 90, then you're gucci.

Everything is running fine it seems, but I have a question: During startup, the cpu temp averages around 50-60 degrees for a little while after login, then drops down to the standard 35-45 I get on idle. During this short time of higher temps, I notice that things are running a tiny bit slower. After about 30 seconds to a minute, the temp goes down and everything goes back to normal. Is this an issue I should try to resolve or this a small side effect of the overclocking?

Also forgot to mention the core voltage idles @ 1.18v's and under load, goes to about 1.2-1.21 v's; which, if i'm understanding right, is a good voltage for going from 3.5ghz to 4.5ghz. I don't plan to overclock any further either.

In ubuntu I saved files onto the windows partition. Now when I open windows, the files aren't there. When I go back to ubuntu, some of the files are missing and the ones that are there are unreadable. I can't delete them either.
I don't really care about the files, but is there any way I can prevent this from happening in the future?

Other answers that pertain to stuff happening in the same table. I can't into the first request because I'm not sure how to change a second table based on a condition in a first table. I can't into the second request because I have no idea how that would even work. Would it be like discarding the changes before they're done or something? Basically I know roughly how a trigger is and I change stuff until it works. This is a practical class I should've taken years ago when I was taking SQL, but it was full back then; now I don't remember shit. Hello
I saw an anon asking the same question I have another time I was in a /sqt/ thread but I couldn't stay long enough to read the answer to it so forgive me asking again please.

I too am looking to upgrade from a pirated Windows 7 (activated with Dazloader, which was NOT downloaded from official mydigitallife forums but somewhere else I don't remember)

I too would like to upgrade to a purchased version of Windows 10 Home 64 bit because my cousin gifted me an official version (the USB-stick version)

However I too wonder if it wouldn't be better to just replace my HDD (I've got two in there, both had Windows on there activated the same way) or perhaps even other parts of my computer to prevent any issues (thinking of maybe Motherboard because flash memory or BIOS memory)

I will explain why I think it could give me problems.

I'm a bit worried the pirated version or the loader I used it with which may not have been completely safe will leave it's tracks on my HDD (read about cleaning HDD only hides the files and allows them to be overwritten but doesn't delete) which then may cause my official version key, which my cousin has bought me, to be duplicated and used in the dazloader program or something else that the pirated version had that's left on either the motherboard or HDDs might rip / duplicate my official version or bug it in a way or another.

TL;DR - Would it be better to replace certain parts of the computer for maximum safety when I want to upgrade from a pirated Windows 7 (activated with Dazloader downloaded not from mydigitallife) to a purchased official Windows 10?

I'm looking very much forward to receiving answer(s), hope someone can help me out, would be great!

There's sqlzoo which is okay for learning but it's interactive which is nice. For your problem:

Read the doc on triggers thoroughly:

1. Look up how INSERT works on triggers

Sorry, I'm super stupid.
By after you finished copying the file, you mean that i shouldn't press sync while it's in the process of downloading right?
I didn't copy it there, I downloaded to the directory directly.

By the way, do I need to specify that I want to sync the windows partition in particular? (as in, do I cd into the directory first?) If I just write "sync", wouldn't that sync only the home directory on my linux partition?

I have a question regarding Wannacry and a virtual lab I run in VMWare 11.

I run two Win 7s, a Server 08 R2, and Server 12 R2 virtual machines. I use them for testing things including firewall tests but don't keep their Windows update going.

A few questions:
- Are they at risk of being infected? I've read of a kill-switch that the infector worm uses that engages when it detects that its in a sandbox environment.
- If they are infected and it sticks, will it spread through the virtual subnet? I have multiple networks within my lab.
- If infected, could I roll back to an earlier snapshot and cure the infection?
- Finally, if infected, could it escape the virtual lab and encrypt my host machine?

why is it that speedtest says my ping is 20 and i get ~1.5 mb up/down, yet when i play games my ping is over 250 and i get packet loss out the ass?

the fuck is going on
>>
>>60395158
because the speedtest server is closer to you than the game server and might have better routing.
>>
>>60395158
Speedtest uses the nearest server. The game servers you're playing on are probably located half the way across the continent.
>>
>>60395158
Depends where the server is. Speedtest often connects you to a server geographically close to you whereas a game's servers could be far away.

For example, I used to play WoW on Whisperwind who's servers are physically located in Dallas, TX while I am in Washington state. My ping from my house to Seattle is irrelevant to my ping connecting to the Dallas servers. That concept is why you choose your geographic location in games: to get the best possible ping.

About this whole cryptolocker thing, I saw someone post a link to a microsoft website saying what update to apply for W7 systems (KBsomething112) or alternatively disabling SMB1 on said systems, because I did not want to go through the Windows Update process I simply tried downloading KBsomething112 but couldnt because reasons. So I decided to edit the registry meanwhile and disabling SMB1 by adding it to the registry with the value 0. Lurking a bit more around /g/ I founf this image (unsourced) it seems to me it implies SMB2 is compromised too. So should I disable it?
