Paying for an actual antivirus and firewall and keeping Windows updated.

What's the best antivirus to use?
In addition to other recommendations, have a properly set up firewall (router is usually good, but if your pc is directly connected to the Internet, block _all ports_ you don't need or don't know what's it for in Windows firewall)

You forgot the most effective:
Make backups often.
>>60390442
Isn't there a way you can do this seemless file level encryption and every time you open the file the file is decrypted while keeping everything else encrypted?
>>60390442
Use linux with the hardened kernel and put everything in a sandbox.
>>60390750
1. The already encrypted files would get encrypted again but by the ransomware, so it'd be useless.
2. You'd have to put in the decrypt key manually nonetheless because if your system knows it, and it gets compromised, it will be again useless.

>>60390491
First part I agree with. Second, you don't need all of the updates. You just need the hotfix Microsoft made.

Can vouch for. Been using it for over 10 years and it's served me well. Bulldog is said to be the best but it's not as user-friendly as Kaspersky

Don't be stupid. Stay up to date. Always have off-site back ups of your data not directly connected to your main machine.

Keep your machine up to date with security updates (including both the operating system you use AND the software you use on it), backup your data on a regular basis, and don't download shit from shady websites.
Really, even if you just back up your data on a regular basis, and don't focus on security at all, you can manage to recover easily from a ransomware attack.
Use Linux
>>60390482
Listen to this person.
No common ransomware defeats a strong backup policy.

>All pre-March Windows machines were vulnerable
It is now May whoever didn't install the update that specifically addressed this vulnerability needs to step away from there PC and get there shit together.
Patch has been available for a month
Wanna cry didn't come out into the wild until a few days ago
Windows is not at fault for this wannacry bullshit, it's the stupidity of the users and lack of common sense for not updating
>>60396294
>Windows is not at fault for this wannacry bullshit
only yesterday there were patches released for old versions of windows
yes, microsoft is to blame here for, among many other reasons, their retarded, buggy update system that is now putting ads in their OSes...
