I don't want the clutter and the same tools never work as well as they do on dedicated distros in my experience. Wifite is one example. I've tried several versions from AUR and the black arch repos and used all optional deps. It's not very reliable. The Backbox version just works for some reason. It snatches handshakes fucking fast. I have no idea why it's different, I just know that it is. The kali version also sucks in comparison but that's a different conversation.

I think Manjaro is a fine distro. The only beef I have with it is the "turning back your system clock in order to access our forum" thing, which was VERY wired. Tried different versions of Manjaro in a VM before (really love the i3 and bspwm editions) but that system clock thing ... it's hard to take them serious after that happening.

The link in the OP is broken, that's why I ask: what distro should I go with if I've never used Linux before?

I'm between two choices here:
>1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
>2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.

does the first option allow for a real Linux experience? Tbh, the only reason I want Linux is to learn how to use it and be able to put it on my CV, improve my chances of getting hired.

What's the most common distro used in a work environment? thx guys

Hotkeys.

>>60375916
Modifier only ones. You cannot bind Super and Super+D or Ctrl+Shift and Ctrl+Shift+C at the same time. It can partially be solved patching Xorg (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865), but it still doesn't work in Xfce: you have to patch libxfce4-whateversuffix library, and it's not very reliable.

Use xbindkeys, it's not the responsibility of the wm/de to bind keys.

Yes, you're right. But some wm accet external commands. So you can still use xbindkeys for everything.

I dont actually use windows, fuse sshfs shit is ezmodo on linux but i need a way for my friends to connect without them having to install shit.

They want to be able to play anime right off the drive so i'm not sure ftp is an option there. Webdav is the only other thing I can think of since samba or nfs are a shitfest over the web to a consumer connection.

I actually do plan on using plex but this setup involves them being able to write to an amazon cloud drive that gets duplicated to several google cloud drives for plex access. Plex passes end up just being cheaper than dedicated servers. I also just want the option for whoever wants to be able to just play the video files through their mapped drive.

Okay I've experimented with Linux in the past, mainly in the form of Ubuntu and Debian and I ended up reformatting and moving back to windows because I found a lot of the choices that were made in their default set ups annoying and the communities for them insufferable, but I've been thinking about giving linux another try and I think part of the problem was I didn't really understand how the systems actually worked and how to get around them and avoid common traps the way I do on Windows

So if I wanted to actually learn how to get stuff done in a Linux environment should I install slackware on an old laptop and fight with it until I can make it work, from what I've heard about it its much more bare bones than anything I've tried before and more geared towards paring everything back to its most basic

Something arch based is your best bet. I'd go with Manjaro.

>debian based rolling release distro?
Stretch, kind of. They freeze it when a new release is near because it transitions into stable. And it is really unstable during the dev phase in my experience. You'd think it would be comparable to Arch stable but it's not. My theory is that they since they patch everything for some reason it causes bugs that wouldn't be present with vanilla packages. I bought into the meme that Debian was better and ran it for a while that's just my experience with it.

That's not what it means. Security through obscurity is when something is supposedly "secure" because nobody knows how it works and nobody can look for bugs in the source code. I think kernel developers have much higher standards for security than Microsoft, but Xorg is horribly insecure due to how bloated and hackish the whole thing is.

Of those listed, most are actually dead or barely maintained. BLAG and Ututo are literally dead so don't use them. Dynebolic and Dragora are also basically dead. The only ones left designed for desktop are Trisquel and Parabola (i dont know about gnewsense, but trisquel is probably better). Parabola is based off arch and rolling release so obviously can be unstable and requires a little maintenance. In my opinion parabola is great if you like arch without the bullshit, but there's no real reason to use Trisquel. Do you care if it's actually endorsed by the Free Software Foundation, or just want 100% free software? Debian is 100% free software and has proprietary drivers removed, but it has an optional proprietary software repository, which is why the fsf disapproves. It's disabled by default, so you won't get anything proprietary if you don't want it. I'd go Debian because it's incredibly stable and well tested with a large community, especially compared to the endorsed distros. Many packages not available in Debian's large repos can be found as .debs.
Also keep in mind, all free distros+Debian have kernels with proprietary "blob" firmware removed. Much hardware needs them these days, especially graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA, as well as 90% of WiFi cards. (Basically all WiFi except ath9k needs blobs. GPUs work without them, but have bad performance.) Debian sounds perfect, as long as you don't care about the endorsement. I personally think it's silly that the fsf refuse to endorse them.
>>
>>60382411
I believe gnome uses network manager, and that's the only way to get network settings integrated with it.
1: # systemctl disable every potential network tool (dhcpcd, netctl, networkd etc).
2: # pacman -s networkmanager
3: # systemctl enable --now networkmanager
>>
>>60382461
>I personally think it's silly that the fsf refuse to endorse them
the main problem is not only the repo, it's that debian steers users to proprietary software by recommending it at their documentation (same problem with gentoo btw)
they're still trying to fix these problems, here's a talk https://caesar.ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/debian-meetings/2015/debconf15/Debian_and_the_FSF_Ending_disagreements_by_solving_problems_at_the_source.webm

xterm is/was a long standing standard, then came rxvt, with added speed and rice, then came urxvt with unicode and even more rice

basically all terminal emulators are good enough, but when it comes to rice, most stuff is still based on xressources

there are people who love the urxvt daemon mode, which also saves ram, but IMHO on modern machines it doesnt matter anymore and the downside of daemonizing (one term crashes = all terms crash) makes me panic out

urxvt is also cool when you're a perl monk, since you can basically script everything terminal related with perl

Allow me to expand on that. It is the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
