Also late here but even to a certain extent those companies release the source for software they use that has GPL or other copyleft licenses. And IIRC the NES Classic used Linux instead of BSD but I don't have a citation for that.

Would anyone know how to carve a section of hex data from a file and print it to a new file? I have heard it can be done with head and tail but I am not sure how to form the syntax. Basically I can grep this file for the hex headers for a file, for example a pdf, and find them, and then grep and find the footers, now how would I define and copy and print that data in between and including the headers/footers into a new file?
>>
>>60337522
Basically grepping for and carving this section out into it's own file:

%PDF-1.5
(Insert file data here)
%%EOF

But those would always be the start and ends.

i'm trying out firefox on a fairly recent install of antergos linux using mate desktop, and things look really weird for some reason. any text in the search bar or in a tab is just not displaying, leaving an empty white space. Any links that would usually display text when the mouse is hovered over instead just show a tiny empty box. And the menu is strange and squished looking, as shown in the picture. Any ideas on what could be causing this? I've reinstalled firefox and rebooted the computer multiple times with no change.
>>
>>60337522
To print a section (between line 3 and 5, inclusive):
sed '3,5!d' file
Or a section from word SOF to the word EOF:
sed '/SOF/,/EOF/!d' file
>>
>>60337643
grep -obUaP "\x25\x50\x44\x46\x2D" file

62126483:%PDF-

grep -obUaP "\x25\x25\x45\x4F\x46" file

62324944:%%EOF

That shows me the header and footer exists, I need print from header > data in between > footer, to new file.

I see I can use head to do this

head -c 184293 file > newFile

The problem lies in the fact that this chunk of data is within a block of other data. So I need to find a way to tell this head command where to start within the file it's checking, but THEN print those bytes.
>>
>>60337858
OK so with sed you can gap with the ,

So maybe something like

sed '\x25\x50\x44\x46\x2D\,\x25\x25\x45\x4F\x46\!d' file > newFile

?
>>
>>60337902

If I install GRUB on a USB drive, like going...

grub-install /dev/sdb

That is installing GRUB on the USB's MBR, correct? I can use the USB to hold junk too?
>>
>>60338038
Ok getting closer:

sed -e '/\x25\x50\x44\x46\x2D/,/\x25\x25\x45\x4F\x46/p' file > fileOut

this prints out what seems to be some padding before the header to the end of the file.

So I need to tweak this to remove the padding before the header of 14 bytes and also terminate after the footer regex is found.

Appreciate any help bros

The least aggressive of the easy ways is probably to add /sbin/poweroff (probably worth it to add /sbin/shutdown, /sbin/reboot too) to /etc/sudoers as a NOPASSWD command - you'll still need to type "sudo" but won't be asked for a password.

Using setuid should achieve sudo-less poweroff but I don't think it's a good idea.

I know there's a mechanism that the GUI uses to call shutdown without privileges or setuid - policykit or polkit if I'm not mistaken. I'm not aware of any CLI API for it, but you should probably look into that.

Oh my bad. You could try LXDM, it will not come with that oldschool look but it is pretty easy to customize. Another simple other one is SLiM but it is not developed anymore and does not work at all with systemd I think.

Take a look!
You might be confusing it with IceWeasel, which GNU IceCat was also formerly named. The other IceWeasel was just re-branded FireFox for Debian for legal reasons. It's all really silly.

On the page for the addon, on Firefox's addons site at least, the license is usually listed at the bottom. Mozilla Public License 2.0 is compatible with GPL if I recall, and that is what most Firefox plugins will be licensed with I think.

For typical usage, i.e. plugging into different computers to transfer files, you should probably stick to a filesystem with no file ownership. I use exfat myself - I don't know what legal hoops the developers have had to jump through but it has good support.

For a different kind of usage, it depends on what you want. I just learned that there are filesystems designed specifically for flash memory - f2fs and logfs look good.

The slash is not a separator, it is part of the directory's name, so technically only the second one is correct. In most cases it won't matter, programs are smart enough to know if a given argument is a file or a directory and there is no ambiguity.

Go read
man rsync
and skip to "USAGE" for a case where there is ambiguity and being careless about slashes can have dire consequences.

Such cases are rare, but keep it in mind and be consistent.

If you're autistic or a neet, read this: http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Arguments_against_systemd

If you're neither, here's a tl;dr: it's a huge, monolithic codebase. It's written mostly in C, which is extremely prone to security bugs like buffer overflows - and no programmer is perfect. Yet the code is so vast and complex that you can even find kernel developers complaining that they can't understand it. Also Poettering has a really shitty attitude - read some of the "Absurd bugs and responses" from the article above.

Going into slightly more paranoid territory, Poettering and his buddies are employees of Red Hat, which has close ties to the US Government (and hence the botnet, in much the same way as Microsoft and Intel etc.) For some reason, it encompasses vastly more than an init system ought to, and it has become a hard dependency of far too much otherwise unrelated stuff.
Now, imagine you are the NSA. You want to backdoor everyone, because it's nice to have (and all the leaks over the years show that that's actually true). So you go and buy out Microsoft, Google, various router manufacturers, get them to implement backdoors for you. But then what about Linux? You want access to that too, but it's all open-source - how on earth can you insert your own backdoor in there? Well, you need something which is:
>vast and complex
If anyone can audit your code, it's no good. If you've got half a million lines of C code, nobody will ever find your slight pointer arithmetic error or intentional buffer overflow.
>all-pervasive in the system
Something that normally runs with non-privileged access or which is only running time to time isn't going to work. On the other hand, a PID1 process that has access to everything, runs all the time the system is powered on, and manages a vast amount of system components is much better. How about an init system? Sounds fantastic! But hey, what about an "init system" that also manages networking, system logs...

>all-pervasive in the ecosystem
No matter how well-hidden and well-crafter your backdoor is, if nobody uses it, you're back to square 1. And what better way to ensure people use your software than make everything else they use depend on it?

Now, do those three points sound familiar to you? I hope I've cleared up why people are so wary of systemd.
>>
>>60351525

and what are the user-friendly distros that don't use systemd?
>>
>>60351736
I heard slackware is pretty good. Devuan is apparently systemd-less debian, assuming they didn't fuck anything up it should be good as well.

I'm using void as my first ever Linux distro, it's working just fine. I did do some tinkering, but you don't even need to.

The problem, of course, is that 90% of people are NOT using good non-systemd init systems, so finding out exactly how to do things for runit or openRC or whatever can take a bit more googling. Still, if you can operate a search engine beyond clicking the first result in google, you should be fine.

If you help me figure this, I will stop using microshit botnet and switch to Linux.

First off, systemd is not an init system, it has an init system as part of the systemd suite. systemd is a project to build a standardised lowlevel userland for Linux. The project is pretty comprehensive and it delivers a lot of functionality under one umbrella. It does away with a lot of older, often undermaintained software packages, which were traditionally used to assemble a low level userland.

Which is where the contention comes from, as a system suite systemd is restrictive for Unix virtuosi who are used to tailor a system with wit, ingenuity, a lick and a prayer and a couple dozen of unrelated packages. systemd makes such knowledge useless.

The faction that thinks that systemd is Linux's Hiroshima, finds all the added functionality bloat, unnecessary and dangerous, as it is all under development in one project.

All the systemd jokes stem from the comprehensiveness as a low level system suite. People against it love to joke that one day systemd will write its own kernel.

There is a lot of FUD and hate going around. Some arguments do have merit, a lot of eggs in one basket is certainly true, but as with all things in life, it depends which tradeoff you prefer. Do you want a suite of well designed software, working closely together, so that system management is streamlined or do you want the complete freedom to tailor your own low level system with a lot of time tested, interchangeable components.

I have no desire to be a low level system designer, so I prefer systemd. I don't hate traditional init systems though. If a Linux system has one and I need to work with it, I'm still happy it boots and starts the necessary services.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I just installed "tree". Why didn't I know about this program before? I'm happy. Install tree faggots.

No need for a book, stuff simply doesn't eval between braces, hence the need of eval.

Anyway: http://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashGuide is the best place on bash you'll ever find.

user-friendly means that stuff is made friendly for the user. The term is often abused as substitute for retard-friendly, or newcomer-friendly.

It prints a nice ascii directory tree. Piped to less gives a pretty good overview, makes it easy to search for stuff (/), etc. I really like it.

To have colors with tree and less, use:
tree -C | less -R, took a while to figure it out for me.

Maybe you'll like this too. Same thing, but with processes.

I know this is a copypasta, but for the people who use this as an argument: the problem isn't the existance of systemd, it's the fact that systemd is everywhere and everything depends on systemd.

The pasta says "I don't hate on traditional init systems". Firstly, "traditional init systems" have many flaws - which is why there exist fantastic modern init systems like runit. Also worth mentioning that most people have no desire to be a low level system designer - which is why they use distros which present an already-designed low level system. The absense of a systemd-type suite does not preclude a system from being perfectly usable by people with little motivation or experience in dabbling with the internals of their installation.

Now back to the "I don't hate on traditional init systems": by using and encouraging systemd, you are killing off all other init systems, and further contributing to the absolute monopoly of systemd - and by extension, Poettering, and by extension, Red Hat Incorporated - on all Linux systems, and the death of distros.
