Private companies asking for a copy of your ID is illegal in alot of countries. They are allowed to ask for it to show it to a human, but not a copy which sending a picture to them is.

Not him, but here in the Netherlands, the only organizations that are allowed to make a copy of your passport/ID card are government agencies, banks and your employer. I've never used Airbnb, but I can't imagine they ask for a copy of your ID here.
