Gross, disgusting, cracked pleather headphone band? Thinking about buying a spare or worse, a new pair? Put your wallet away son. Because boy do I have a solution for you.

TESA tape is adhesive backed cloth which you can wrap around your headphones to give it a clean soft finish.

One roll of this shit will last you for ages and only set you back a few bucks. 51608 seems to be the good stuff but other models might offer different softer or firmer feels to your preference.
>>
>>60293563
Resolution isn't a concept headphones are associated with.

>>60293480
>multibit
In audiophile circles that is usually used to describe some sort of resistor ladder DAC or even segmented DAC like Yggdrasil. It's just another way to build a DAC. Unimportant for the listener.

I bet you think your shitty mobo and a dedicated external DAC sound the same as well.
>>
can someone explain the following meme to me?
I bought a pair of 662 EVO's recently, as I heard great things about them and their pricetag, and they are great, but also seem to share a really really odd flaw.

They have unbalanced highs and lows. And not in the normal term of unbalanced, no, they're literally unbalanced in the right and left speakers. The left side plays higher frequencies on a higher volume, and the right side plays lower frequencies on a higher volume. I've gone trough settings across the fucking globe and switched the sides around, but it's still exactly the same.

Is this even possible? Are the drivers just shit?
>>

>>
>>60295089
I have two pairs, but I'm heavily thinking that it's >>60294865 because switching the channels around reverses the effect.
There's no way they're damaged or wrongly built if switching the left and right to right and left FROM windows makes it work the opposite way.
>>
>>60294762
The Schiit Cans are made in America. But they don't sound any different from your motherboard's on-board headphones
>>
>>60293563
I have both. Anything you hear on one headphone, you hear on the other because they're very similar. The HD600 is just a tiny bit clearer and better for detail listening.

Literally nothing tops this for pure sound quality at the moment.
>>
>>60294694
I hope that wasn't your idea addressing my post. Not only did you not address anything I said, you replied with something unrelated which makes it sound like you managed to misunderstand what I wrote.

Not once did I say there aren't differences between gear of any type.

Go read what I said again and if you still disagree, explain how do you think resolution is applicable to headphones?

>mobo and dedicated external DAC sounding the same
Plausible. Just like it's plausible that they don't. Whether DAC is on the mobo or somewhere else doesn't tell us about the quality. Audibility is another question and since these are devices have an analog stage, the performance depends equally on the load.

>>60294705
Each driver manufactured is unique, they exhibit different frequency dependent sensitivity. The pair of drivers used on your headphone are likely just not matching. That tells of poor quality control and/or very poor tolerances.

You need to attenuate the signal per channel and as a function of frequency. Use an equalizer.

Just got hd650s, had hd599s and dt880s.

holy FUCK do they sound absolutely amazing and I just wish they were as comfortable as the 599s. The headband is waaay too stiff and it feels like it will snap (hehe snapheiser) if I put slightly too much force on it, and it clamps too hard. The earcups are also much less roomy than the 599s and they push on my ears just a bit. Build quality seems somewhat worse, maybe not worse but not much better than the 599s/dt880s compared how much more they cost
>>
>>60296838
There are replacements for headbands on amazon my dude.
>>
>>60296987
you mean to replace the headband on 650 so it clamps less? that's my only issue with it. i would need to look into something to make the cups roomier as well, without messing with the sound then

Pro or Premium DT880's (32/250/600)? How's it sound compared to the 599/650? Anything you liked/disliked about it from the others? Comfort pros/cons?
>>
>>60297384
treble rape

250 ohm premium for max comfy
>>
>>60297509
Thinking of getting DT880 250 Ohm Pros with DT770 pads because loose clamp sounds iffy for my small head. People complain about 668B's clamping hard when they're snug without feeling like a vice grip on my head. I've also heard DT770 pads add a bit of isolation and bass compared to 880/990 Stock pads.
>>
I have studio headphones that have a really long cable that annoys me to no end since I use them with a PC and have a tabletop DAC/Amp.
Should I just cut the cable to the desired length and solder on a new jack?

I'm a bit squeamish about cutting off a perfectly working jack, but given a proper solder job this shouldn't really do shit to affect how the headphones function, right?
>>
>>60297384
880 250 ohm premiums here, upgraded from SR 850 (Superlux 681).

>really comfy, right amount of clamp, pads are like having two pillows against your head
>treble can be a bit peaky for some
>bass is just right for my tastes
>needs amp
>actually made in germany
>nice carry case included
>>
Why would anyone buy from sennheiser.com? They still sell 10+ year old headphones at rediculous prices when Amazon has them for hundreds less.
>>
>>60297960
Same anon from >>60297841
My only worry is I've heard the Premium's clamp is a quite a bit lighter than the Pros and the Pros use the same extremely soft pads as the premiums resulting in your ear touching the driver (which I don't mind) and feeling the sharp edges of the cups. I forgot to mention I wear thin plastic framed glasses.

also the pros come with a coiled cable

Used to own M50's for music listening, but they started to give me a headache for some reason. This is why i now avoid closed headphones. I think it was caused by some minor pressure on the muscles around my ears, which the closed headphones usually sat on. I don't fucking know though.

These days i usually listen to music on speakers, so crazy audio quality is not a priority.

Or when people ended up blaming a boogeyman """CG""" on everything which fit into that certain criteria. Or editing OP to have some personal agenda against a random anon. Or Snapheiser/Beyersremorse image dumps which somehow still manage to fool and bait users to deduct stuff about build quality. Or posting the same cherry picked FR plots over and over again. Knowles driver pricing and Etymotic. Amps I don't like are hiss monsters. People getting mad at HornLoaded or Cummypaws. OP deleted because of half naked Sonico. O2 vs Magni, M50 vs V6, HD 600 vs DT880.

What joyous times.

Depends on how far you are willing to go.
You can just dremel/file a little bit and use a cheap jack with a hex on the outside (pic related). If you do this, the only difficult part is gonna be the soldering So its fairly easy. .https://www.head-fi.org/f/threads/beyerdynamic-dt880-premium-detachable-mod-d.652514/

If you wanna go all out you can use a domed washer and a fancy looking jack with a polished domed washer recessed into the plastic (as i posted). But thats gonna be really time consuming.
>>
>>60301766
The cheap version is fine enough i guess, and i could get some V-Moda cables which is always nice, i'll probably test it on a cheaper headphone first, but it doesn't seem complicated at all, thanks for the link, Anon.

That's wrong you fucking idiot, it has a flat bass response.
>>
>>60298266

Balanced Armature drivers have bass, both in range and quantity...but it has almost zero impact or slam. The bass is there, and you can hear it, you just can't FEEL it.

So you're wrong, but IMO there's no substitute for DD in an IEM when it comes to bass.
>>
>>60302535
This is wrong, it's simply how the driver is tuned, not the driver type.
>>

>>
>>60302613

Care to give an example then? While I haven't heard a lot of BA IEMs, every one that I have has had that issue. They're tonally beautiful, but you can't get the same sensation that a DD pumping air gives. I also haven't heard any PMs or ES drivers, so I have no grounds for comparison there.

DT770 is not bad at all if you want a good closed-back.

overhyped imo. If you do go for them the stock pads are cancer. Dont bother with velour pads, none of them are thick enough and the drivers will touch your ear. Buy monoprice's suggested white polyurethane pads, theyre suprisingly comofrtable.
IMO youre better off buying whatever superlux headphone is under $30 instead of those.

>Balanced Armature drivers have bass, both in range and quantity...but it has almost zero impact or slam
Common, but not inherent.
Two concerns:
-Tons of balanced armature sets are midbassy more than subbassy.
-Balanced armatures are even more leak intolerant than the moving coil counterparts.
I don't think most people recognize when they have a good fit. Too many people talk about foam tips giving them more bass, but a foam tip has some inherent porosity to it

>>60303043
Foobar EQ is broken by design. Get something else, get anything else. I would really suggest a parametric EQ, Equalizer APO being the usual choice as it is system wide. If you want to stick to Foobar integration, there are plugins for that, native plugins and ones that require a VST wrapper.
I would also suggest making a cut around ~150 Hz area and a bit above.

Anyway
Next to the k7xx the m220 feels more solidly built and has a tad bit less China rattle than the k7xx. Aside from the horrible pads on the m220 I like the aesthetics of it over the k7xx. The plastic covering the spring steel rods has less play in the m220. Overall although the k7xx has better materials it feels like AKG gave more of a shit when it built the m220 for itself than it did when they built the k7xx for assdrop.
>>
>>60302914
It's just the output response of BA vs dynamic driver IEMs. The BAs typically have a flat response from 20Hz-1kHz while dynamic driver IEMs can vary a lot with a bell curve in the bass.

The auto adjust has less parts on the m220 and I appreciate the simpler design of it over the one on the k7xx, especially with that clear plastic tab on it. The eslastic bands on the m220 are thinner and tighter than the k7xx. The articulation mechanism in the m220 is better design and freely flows without getting caught and jammed on anything internally like what happens with the k7xx and there is no tissue paper crinkling when it moves like there is on the superlux 668b.

Headband, you can tell there was an attempt to have some padding in it, but they failed. Out the box due to the stronger plastic the headband pressed down too tightly and wasn't that comfortable. I prefer the looser elastic on the k7xx and its leather band which make it the more comfortable headphone.

Left: $6 velour pads from amazon for 668b
Right: stock k7xx
Bottom: stock sph9500

It's like swimming in the ocean for your ears with the 7kxx, 9500 is just the right size for me, still a little cramped for both 668bs

Clamp wise k7xx is the lightest. Will fall off head after one strong shake of the head downwards. 9500 is a little strong and it takes around 2 shakes before the fall off. 668b is like putting my head into a vice, strongest of any headphone I have.

>>
>>60305486
yeah they def need some eq. though experimenting with some different foam ear pads for them, that mid-brassiness and how dark they do or don't sound is 99% space to your ear and how much is physically in front of the driver in terms of material. using pads with holes or doing the "quarter mod" makes it much less dark. moving the driver a bit further by using bigger pads like the hd414 ones seems to bring down that mid-bass hump by a lot.

>>
>>60306007
all high-end daps are not worth it, for the simple reason that an occasion to actually use them for what you would "need" to use them for hardly ever comes up in most people's lives. I listen a lot on the go, but it's mostly while doing other things or traveling. I'm rarely in a quiet place with not much going on so that I can really appreciate the sound quality difference. 99% of the time some decent IEMs and my phone and/or my little chink player are enough. if I had a different lifestyle and money was no problem I could see it being beneficial, but even then I could probably just use an external dac/amp for my phone and not have to bother with an extra, clunky device I have to carry.

The slam is just another description of the response, one without a good definition I might add. The response is dependent on tuning and can vary a lot based on seal making it also subjective.

>>60304998
No that's more of a case because they can. Response accuracy is not found in the "high end" and using multiple drivers only complicates tuning the response.

Cheap Chinese in-ears can have both BA and dynamic drivers for less than 20 dollars. There's nothing high end about that combination. The expensive models tend to have multiple BA-drivers per ear. Some make do with one dynamic, some with one BA.

HD800S is clearly a step or two above the Elear but needs careful gear matching. It's more comfortable as well. The Elear is easier to play with since it sounds nice pretty much out of anything. I'm kind of worried about Focal's QC because in the latest Inner Fidelity article they measured two Utopias that turned out to be completely different from one another. You won't encounter this kind of issues with Sennheiser so that's another plus I guess.

Hmm... the Elear has this very specific tuning to its sound that can be polarizing. It's hard to say but there is a bit of resonance going on in the lower midrange, kind of like what Audio Technica does to its closed wooded cans but much milder. I don't like it but others swear by it. Definitely try to buy from a shop with return policies if you go for it.

What mods/pads do you have on your T50rp mkiii
>>
>>60311705
I got a v-mod cable and the Shure HPAEC1540 memory foam pads. Very comfy. Only reason I got a new cord is because after about 4 months the other cord had some issue. Do you recommend any mods? I've been thinking about doing something with these.
>>
>>60311616
Heh. Well, it happens :)

I personally keep mine at low gain, because that's more than loud enough on HD600 now that I got used to them.
>>
Boyyyy, grab your 280$ HD600 https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Open-Back-Professional-Headphone/dp/B00004SY4H/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494425958&sr=8-1&keywords=hd600

I was thinking about doing the Mayflower mod, but I can't seem to find any other good mods for the mkiii.
There are massive threads on head-fi, but they are for the mkii or the original T50s.
How did the 1540s change the sound??

Ive been looking for a long ass cable though, I like being able to walk around my room with the Sony MDR-V6 cable

audio newfag incoming

My Micca OriGen+ has an issue where the sound will suddenly increase in volume until it is as high as it can be.
Turning the knob to the lowest setting will make sound be out of the right ear and turning to the right all the way will make them balanced. Turning it off and back on or repluging the wires used to work. This problem has become more and more frequent as time has gone on to the point that I can hardly ever get it to play correctly.
I am using the usb to micro usb cable that it came with connected to the motherboard of my computer outputting to a pair of ATHm40x.
I have tried using a different cable and all of the ports on my computer. I have tried using a different computer. I have tried using different headphones. I have tried reinstalling the drivers. The problem persists.

Is there anything I can do?

Yea the Mayflower mod is suppose to be really good. Um, I kind of forget the original sound. I don't think it changed it too much. Still sounds amazing. Improves comfort greatly. Would recommend. The original 1/4 inch cable was really nice because it was like 12 feet so I could walk far, the v-mod is like 6 feet, but it's good enough for me
>>
>>60310983
1) itchy pads
2) loose clamp for normal-sized heads
3) recessed mids, a bit too much mid-bass, rollercoaster treble
4) nice build quality

I had two pairs of X2, then I switched to AKG K702 and I got HD600 some days ago. Both K702 and HD600 are better headphones imo.
>>
>>60311934

It's channel imbalance as the volume/output increases from a low threshold. I also have the OriGen+, and have the same issue, but you just have to raise the volume until you get the correct response from both channels; you can't really use it at a whisper-quiet setting. If you haven't already, fiddle between running high and low gain settings, too.
>>
>>60311941
HD599 > k702 > HD598se.

But I'd personally suggest stretching your budget / waiting, and just getting HD600, so that you don't ever need to upgrade.

Nothing wrong with HD600 -> motherboard. Particularly at non-insane volumes, on a board that has a built-in headphone amplifier (many do these days).

Spend money on headphones, not fucking amps.

Your sound quality test is worthless sighted just like everyone else's is. You can't know whether you are hearing your own biases or the actual sound. But your conclusion is unlikely to change on most loads even if you did it double blind and level matched.

Things you can listen for are loudness and noise.

For what it's worth, I've auditioned the Utopias properly on two separate events: the first time was during their launch event at Singapore in October last year and second time was quite recent around last month when people here started getting their headphones.

On both occasions they never strike me as warm-sounding, actually rather bright (though less offensive than stock HD800) and imparts a kind of tonality that makes everything sounds unnaturally good (their rep told me this is a beryllium thing). So I can conclude that I've only ever heard the "bright" Utopias all this time. I'm curious about the warm ones though because honestly they do a lot of things right.

Focal is an experienced manufacturer so I'm pretty sure that this issue is limited to the Utopia since the Elear doesn't use beryllium drivers. Besides from the Inner Fidelity article, they discussed a possibility that this is not a product variance but rather a change of tuning since the Utopias with high serial numbers measure similarly.

Thanks once again, I appreciate the insight.

It must be really great to be able to test headphones, I don't really travel and the nearest (good) headphone store is a $600 journey. Not really worth it for me

I've noticed alot of anons speaking poorly on anything bellow hd600... I googled the hd 558s and seem legit tho and only cost 120 here in greece.
I'm pretty much between these and m50x since i've read way too much positive feedback on those. Does sound staging suck on those? Are hd 558 lacking too much bass? Will 558 play loud? Most say hd 558 is for listening to music relaxed but this is not how i listen to music, i generally play it louder and need it to have a sort of kick to induce the emotions i want from it, for example when talking about classical think something like verdi's dies irae. Will the m50x be bad for vr gaming?

In my opinion, yes. M50X's have no soundstage whatsoever and if I had the funds for vr, I would prioritize my focus on immersion and headphones with good soundstage and imaging really help with that.

If you want closed, avoid the M50x. M40x is cheaper and just as good if not better.

Cb-1 is also a good option and won't likely require new pads to be comfy.

If you're going to buy an amp, DT770 pro 80 ohm are one of the best closed values, but they may not reach high enough volumes without a good source.

i bought and returned my o2 amp since i couldn't tell the difference between it and my motherboard. plugged straight into my mobo 30 was comfortable and 40 was loud. The amp at 3.3 gain turned two thirds with the pc at 60 sounded as loud as straight in the mobo at 35. I didn't test it heavily but the bass didn't seem anything more impressive.
>>
>>60314217

I feel that I should clarify; it isn't that my OriGen+ needs to be at a specific volume/position to get the channels matching, more so that you have to hit a specific threshold before they output evenly. As far as other DAC/Amps, I have no idea how common it is across the board. I know that some suffer from it, seemingly more than others. My only other reference points are various DAPs, my mobo and a Pioneer receiver I use for my 2.1 setup. None of them seem to have had this issue in the past.

Hi guys, I hope you can help me with this one.

Currently I am using some very cheap Sony earbuds and was considering an upgrade.

I was considering Sennheiser HD600, but after trying them (a friend of mine bought a pair) I started having second thoughts. The sound of the Sennheiser and my cheap earbuds was basically the same (at least to me).

So, is there a preferred brand/style/... for headphones, used primarily for metal ?
