I'm no pro/g/rammer, but could a decentralized database work? something like this;

1. First program launch by creator along with launch creates the first database.

2. The program is handed out to other users, all of which download the existing database with IDs to files from the original DB host.

3. After some time, the original root database will select a handful of users who meet requirements to become more root database holders which send exact copies of their database to the seeders, who in turn send to other seeders.

4. If a new torrent is added by a non-root user, it is pinged to all active root database holders, who then update the database of every active seeder who then pass it on to other seeders.

5. Moderators can be elected who will have the ability to remove torrents from all root databases, which will update the databases to any seeders who re-connect on launch to the database, naturally moderators will also be root holders.

tl;dr the program will hold the database, when the program is launched it downloads an updated copy of the database from multiple users and compares it for changes and inconsistencies and passes it onto other users like a cascade.

Again, I'm no programmer so I'm not even sure if this is possible let alone viable.

The idea of the root database is to keep a "verified" location of the database that can't be messed with, and removes the requirement for a dedicated server to maintain the location of the database, if one root database goes down, you can still update from fellow seeds or other root database.

Right now I'm not really sure about my knowledge on network protocols, but what you really want might not be possible.
I've tried something similar before when I was in a network class, and you won't be to turn this system that is already partially p2p into full p2p.
But, again, i'm not really sure! maybe someone might come here that knows more about this stuff.
I would suggest you to go ahead on it, maybe you can do it, i dunno. Try reading Kurose's book about computer networking, it's not reeaaally about programming but you might get interested on it after reading :^)
>>
>>60277994
> could a decentralized database work
MySQL and Postgres have replication features, but it's not decetralized by any means. I have yet to see more effecive method than Postgres WAL streaming, though: it streams RAM diffs to another DB which then applies those diffs to itself. Even cascade replication is possible, the big problem is master DB does not remove diff until it gets confirmation from a slave host, so pg_xlog can become bloated due to a lost connectivity.

You're thinking way too complex. A decentralised database is easy just put a sqlite file in a torrent or use IPFS with IPNS. The problem is how to update the database. Will everyone have their own database and aggregators make all of them searchable? Will there be one central database? If so how do you identify the uploaders and prevent spam?

The database can be downloaded once, then the updates could be fetched through the blockchain.

>>60278750
you do not need trackers with magnets.
The torrent "file" that is the information about the files and who has them is stored in the DHT, the magnet link is the location where to find them.
Once found and downloaded the torrent proceeds normally.

You can use bootstrapping nodes which are similar (but not identical) to trackers in magnet links but its not necessary. Since you are already connected to the DHT unless you just recently installed your BT client, you can get the information from the peers on the DHT.

>>60278689
This looks like a crude emulation of different distributed-systems topologies.
I would just use IPFS to distribute everything.
Post the hash of the new DB each day, subscribe to the corresponding IPNS hash (of the server, Pubsub is experimental but will come soon).
Because of the inherent deduplication in IPFS only the new parts of the DB will be downloaded.

There, distribution and redundancy archived.

What? What? Did you confuse MySQL with NoSQL and other Redis/Mongodb in-memory databases? MySQL does not lose your data "all the time".
I don't know, maybe you use Docker or another hipster designed-for-AWS technology which are not ready for production, but let me say this: I supervise several government (non-US) websites, some of them use MySQL and data loss due to MySQL shutdown is simply not an issue. Yes, sometimes it drops dead due to hardware issues and whatnot, but data loss due to MySQL quirks literally never happened over the course of three years. Even if it shuts down inconsistently, it recovers.
It should be noted I respect Postgres more than MySQL, because it conforms to SQL-92, SQL-98, SQL-2003 unlike MySQL, BUT I want to say MySQL is reliable enough even with 100 hits per second, provided you have enough RAM.

>use IPFS instead
Pushing a database to IPFS would be nice. But if it's just something like an sqlite database, what's the point? The chunks don't always sync perfectly and if you do any weird with it, IPFS may split the chunks differently.
So I thought of creating a sort of merkle tree with IPLD dag objects.

There'd be a single "database maintainer" who could be seen as trustworthy, and manages permissions of other peers who can make trusted additions to the network. Publishing new revisions would only require announcing the new version on a pubsub topic, prompting subscribers to retrieve the updates and traverse the tree.
I'm not sure how fast it would be to query this tree, but if it turns out to be slow, one could always build a local sqlite database that's updated with the merkle tree.
>>
>>60280334
https://www.google.ch/search?q=mysql+data+loss

>>60280387
well magnets are better because you cannot really take down a magnet link while you can wipe torrent files

>>60280531
I guess there will be some fragmentation esp. when old entries are changed, but assuming a large enough db filesize (compared to the chunks of the mdag) it still seems good.

DB maintainer would be the IPNS hash of the server of nyaa to which everyone subscribes to.
>>
>>60280531
What happens if the maintainer dies? How is this different from the current situation? nyaa dies somebody puts up a nyaa clone from the database dump
>>
>>60280842
If the maintainer dies, the latest version of the database is still there; a new maintainer just needs to swap in their own peer id.
The only real issue would be convincing everyone to LET you be the maintainer. Though, the system could also be set up to have multiple maintainers at once, in case something happens to one. In that case the only time something bad is likely to happen is if every maintainer is having tea together and it turns out someone spiked the drinks.

Either way, at least in this case if all maintainers crock or get spooked, everything can just be forked.
>>
>>60277994
A fully decentralized database that provides GPG-signatures for all published magnet links could work.

The publishing groups would be responsible for signing their releases and safekeeping the private keys, while the end users would have to build up their own private databases of keys they choose to trust, and would use these to verify the signatures of releases they choose to download.

The actual distributed website as rendered by the browser would be divided into two parts; a static, full-featured database browser that uses the local database to verify the validity of signed releases, and distributed using IPFS or similar, while the dynamic portion is the database itself, featuring a magnet link, associated tags and a cryptographic signature for each element.

Ok, so I thought of how we could make a distributed database over IPFS.
Basically, we would use IPLD's dag objects to describe the database, and distribute it among peers.

The Database Head — A DAG object which references all other important information. It would look something like this:
{
Tables : { "/" : "CID" }
Peers : { "/" : "CID"}
Maintainers : { "/" : "CID"}
Parent : { "/" : "CID" }
Author : { "/" : "CID" }
}

(Note that
{ "/" : "CID" }
represents a link to another node, where CID is a hash.

Tables would reference a DAG with links to tables.
Peers links to a list of information about peers, and which of them have "Trusted" status and so on, while also maintaining a reference which links all of their entries to the database.
"Maintainers" would be a smaller list of Peers who have authority over the database changes. "Mods" should be able to be assigned and removed by maintainers as well.
"Parent" links to the previous commit, while "Author" links to the Maintainer who submitted the current commit.

When an update to the merkle tree is made, an announcement is put out on a pubsub topic, linking to the most current commit. Peers can then download the latest commit (and make sure they also have the previous commit) before traversing the tables for changes.

Is there anything I'm missing? Something that may break this outline that I'm not thinking of?
>>
>>60279935
you realize nothing you mentioned requires a blockchain or proof of work right?
>>
I've noticed some torrents are missing from nyaapantsu, this is all the .torrent files I have in my HDD: https://www.sendspace.com/file/gvreyj

I didn't check what is missing and what isn't but dev can probably extract the hash and compare to the database. They're 920 torrents in total. Their trackers need to be updated, probably.
>>
>>60279935
You could also use public PGP keys in the transaction message to authenticate the whoever uploads an update, it would make it easy for a release group to identify their updates and for other people to follow the release group too.

I remember when I was mod-editor in one of the many anime forums out there, people would never understand when I talked about improving quality and standards, yeah they would listen and say cool great idea but nobody was ever serious about anything, even the sempais wouldn't give it much thought, maybe one or 2 of them who had more experience but they still didn't care about what the others did.
I started getting pushy and having too many expectations from others, It didn't take much for me to get alienated from the editors team, when I realized what was going on there was no choice but to make distance and eventually leave the place for good.
I kinda understand Daiz, I wish I had the chance to find a group where I could belong like he did, so many abandoned projects and what not, accomplishing something alone on the internet is close to impossible.

Thank heavens. Slowly, little by little things are beginning to work.

But don't forget to add the mosaic version of Renchon to sukebei though. That's what's really important here now.
>>
>>60286218
Yeah sukebei needs to be worked on.
We're just trying to get a functional nyaa clone up asap now.
Could probably enable uploads now since we have caching to handle the load but no moderation system.

I wouldn't recommend that, it's too messy.

You could tho, reach out to the major fansubber groups and give them the capability to upload or have a group of anons do that for you, but free uploading with no moderation is asking for trouble.

Minimal moderation, but make the other areas of the site more robust.
User-supplied tags to torrents like steam
Uploader-supplied tags like anidex. (remake, original tl, batch, etc)
Comments have a MAL-review like system. (so and so users found this review helpful.)

caveat emptor: these require db modification
