Looking to get a new phone as my current one is dying hard. I'm a fucking leaf so keep my price range in mind, around 300 bucks rainbow currency. I got my eye on a Galaxy S5, as it has good enough spects and button placement I like.

Why don't iThings support rest-to-unlock on their fingerprint sensors? On my Android, I just have to touch it and the device wakes up and unlocks with one motion. With iOS, even with "rest to unlock" enabled in accessibility, there's still an extra stage (either "press home to wake and keep finger rested without depressing again for ~1s to unlock" or "press power to wake then rest finger to unlock").

Why is this? Is it a deliberate design decision or a technical limitation? Are always-on sensors more power hungry?

I hate samson solely for their touchjizz, but this year it seems that they have killed it, that is competition all together.
the s8 is one sexy beast.
Also no bootpoops, I love LG and owned a nexus 4, 5, and a 5x that bootlooped.

I got the g6 about a week ago and I really like it. Upgraded from a 4+yr old Note II.

The most noticeable difference to me having been with Samsung for a while is the bloat isn't so deeply integrated. Even without root, I can turn off the few things more easily and force the third party app on top of it without worrying about it being buggy.

I almost haven't turned my phone off since I got it, stress testing it and tweaking and feel like it is overall the better choice for me because of two big things. The screen DOESN'T have edge curve, which is better for video viewing no matter how hard Samsung tries to push the 'infinity edge'. Trust me, you want some edge to hold on to the damn phone itself. Second, the software is more lightweight, and the back-to-basics approach seems to have worked out well for LG this time.

Hope that helps.

Should I just buy the s8 already?

Waiting for the xz premium is taking forever and I wanna just sell my pixel and buy the s8

The only reasons why I'm holding off is cause the navbar icons are ugly as sin and there's still lag and microstuttering when I tried my friends model
>>
>>60272150
>getting a phone with a 4k screen
>>
>>60272150
Your friend probably never scrubs his apps or tries to clean up the bloatware. The s8 probably will lag with all of the bloatware from Samsung but one sweep of package disabler and it's smooth sailing for me. I'd recommend the s8 over anything out now or the xz
>>
>>60272201
I had the Z5 premium. Shit was dope. 4k itself was a fucking pleasure to use and the resolution is so high that it's like looking at a mirror of reality. The thing sucked though because of the 810 snapdragon house fire chipset and as a result battery wasnt too good.

Also you haven't lived until youve experienced a native 4k video in VR

Though if I get the s8 the screen will be a lot worse resolution wise due to the qhd+ AMOLED display

The pixel is fhd and I find jaggies every now and then

>>60272231
Do you get any stuttering? I actually found the fp scanner not really an issue, (maybe everyone else has manlet hands) also, which model do you have? Us or int?

Fuck it I'd rather wait for the note 8
>>
>>60272263
>native 4k video in VR

Is it really that clear? I've only tried PSVR and Google Cardboard on my Nexus 5X.
>>
>>60271672
It might be a problem with the hardware of your phone.

I do have a suggestion: Try installing an external media player that has a software decoder and enable "Open videos external" in the settings so that the video opens externally in a software decoding app.

this isn't for me but someone else and its a bit difficult,

Vodafone AU, 40-60 dollar plan
however most of the phones by contract is not what she wants. so the budget might extend to around 400-600 aud in that case. and I don't know what to get for her...

Samsung is the most established possibility as she never had any other brand before. the only other option she has on a plan is the huewei mate 9s or the oppo R9s and to be fair, Chinese phones on a 60 dollar plan or 400-600 aud outright doesn't seem to be worth it (the one plus three/four might be but I doubt that's a phone she's really looking for)

1. download the OTA file from the Lenovo link

I want a chink phone for this 'cycle' of phone ownership, don't ask why. I'm looking for a phone that has:
>at least till 6pm of battery life on slightly heavy usage (a bit of gaming/music streaming/shit posting)

>last me probably max 2 years at least, so some means of updates and NOT fall behind the 'progress curve' of new and updated apps.

I'm looking at either the OP3T or possibly the lenovo P2. Should I not cheap out and just go for the former? The P2s battery is luring me slightly.

>>
>>60280914
Stock android, thin but feels really tough and solid, kiler specs, and memes aside the battery mods are pretty dope although i'd recomend one that you can charge standalone. turbocharging the phone is neat.

The only drawback is that ludicrous fucking fingerprint sensor that ruins the front panel unless you install a fingerprint gestures app. That will get fixed in moto z2 which will use same multi-purpose button as g5, but first gen z you just have to swallow it.

If you can buy unlocked it's a pretty decent choice. Just don't expect it to have as good camera as S7.
>>
>>60282665
anything xiaomi with 4kmAh will last two days, p2 will last three

moto z play has a stupidly long screen on time as well due to near-stock android, and if you can handle your phone extra THICC you can try one of the powerbank mods

both p2 and z play run on snapdragon 625 and that's the SoC you should be aiming for whatever you choose (g5+ and redmi note 4 use it as well)

(4X snapdragon version)
I thought it would be meh but pleased with mine right now, sure miui might turn off some purist (and i always preferred stock android) but the numerous tweaking options you can do with miui is still nice.

finding a tempered glass can be quite annoying though due to it's 2.5d curved edge.

Be sure to tweak the power/battery options as miui is pretty aggressive on memory and kills apps easily.

Camera is meh, but more than enough for its price range (if you are lucky to get the better sony exmor imx258 sensor)

Battery is awesome, easily lasts 1 day with heavy usage (intensive gps navigation, 4G data, gaming, videos, browsing etc) and 1.5 to 2 days with lighter usage. back only warms up a bit and not very hot on heavy usage. Also, top and bottom part is plastic vs metal of the original note 4 (not a biggie for me, i use a casing)

I hear it has tons of custom roms and xiaomi supports unlocked device and root.

despite having snapdragon 625, it doesn't support quick charge 3.0, perhaps enabling adds to the royalty cost, wished they could have just left out that built in IR blaster and just opted to have QC3 or NFC

If you are using google assistant, it may have issues saying the device is locked and cant use app or something, miui 8 issue, or try looking for solutions on the web

My phone activities consist of:

>listening to music

If I'm really just interested in getting the longest playing/reading time out of my phone, should I consider anything other than battery size? How much of a factor is the processor?
>>
>>60287010
Processor is a huge factor, as is battery size, screen resolution, screen itself and backlighting

I have the Blade V8 Pro, and even if I'm shitposting for hours on end while listening to music and searching shit, my battery consumption is the best I've had with this level of performance, the 4XX series can only match the 6XX series in battery life but their performance lacks, 8XX tops in performance but worst in battery life

SD6XX series is truly tops as long as it's not the 615/617
>>
>>60287287
That lends credence to the Moto G5+ people here. I've heard the 625 is good in particular but not the whole 600 range, thanks for that info.

The 625 is a great example but I've also heard good things about the 65X series and the upcoming 66X series

What are the downsides of buying a year old used phone? Slowness when a phone "gets older" is a meme, right? How does battery life change over time?

I barely use my phone, but I want it to look nice and have certain features that only very expensive phones have. A year old S7 is like 65% of the new price.
>>
>>60290010
If it has been used, then battery life would be significantly lower (usually ~85% of the original capacity after a year of use).
>>
>>60290089

>>
>>60290098
Honestly no, but you can expect it to be lower. Also, the battery might even have swollen, which isn't dangerous, but not exactly safe either. Again, ideally you should replace it, also because it might not deliver a stable voltage/current to the phone and cause instabilities.

So what's the verdict with all this. I'm not very savvy with processors, is there not a noticeable difference from the 6xx models to the 8xx? Is it really not worth it when taking into account the power usage? I'm looking to buy a phone that can handle some full-title games like XCOM/Deus Ex, should I definitely avoid 625 phones and go for the 8xx series?

For reference, I'm looking at either the p2 or the OP3T, obviously I'd like to save money but I don't want to skimp out on a phone I'll be using for 2 years either.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new phone, duh.

I'm coming from a Note 3, in between I had a OnePlus X.

The following are my criteria:
>No fingerprint sensor
>5" screen
>SD card slot
>big xda support and rootable
>if possible physical a homebutton

I don't care if it's a new phone or a little bit older, right now I'm eyeing the Note 4, maybe the Note 5 (though I hate its round design and the smart cover looks terrible on it).
Though price is relatively trivial, I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible.

What would you suggest?
I'm not into any video games or resource intensive stuff.

have u seen the just released sony xperia xa1?
>>
>>60290981
There is a big difference between 625 and 820. I'd even suggest that you go with an 821 phone like Mi5S.

Thanks for the tip, really considering it, but
>720p
>>
>>60291150
I'm pretty sure the OP3T has an 821
>>
>>60291218
>720p
i know, but 1080p honestly isn't that noticeable on 5" and smaller, but uses quite a bit more battery life. check the 1080p-720p difference in a store before crossing it off your list

Any slide out gamepads like the Xperia Play for a moto g4?
I really like the idea of having an easily accessible gamepad that doesn't that too much space.
>>
>>60290602
SoC = System on Chip, it's basically all the components you'd have on a PC like CPU, GPU, memory + phone stuff like modem, WiFi/bluetooth etc.
>>
>>60291309
I already have.
I use ROMs or mods to scale everything down so that it "looks smaller" on my screen.
I've gotten really accustomed to 440ppi.

Maybe I'll come up with a way to physically disable the fingerprint sensor, that would really open up the possibilities.
If anyone has an idea, just shoot me. So far I've been thinking of mixing some glue with metallic dust, but I don't have an capacitive or ultrasonic fingerprint SENSOR to test it on.

Me too. That Nokia 6 seem really sweet. Too bad it's chink market only.
>>

>Are you using a samsung or sony rear sensor? Some 4X are mixed sony and samsung sensors and what camera app are you using?
Mine is Samsung. There's modified stock camera app on russian 4pda site that basically turns off chink image processing, which makes photos a lot better.

once you get used to it (2-3 days at most) you'll have a hard time using anything else. It's super comfy

Just sell it. You'll be able to buy any other phone. The s8 is very small for the screen size though.
>>
>>60291383
you can also check the Huawei P8, Xperia X, Xperia M5 and the Blackberry Priv/DTEK50. All have 1080p screens , micro sd slot and no fingerprint scanner. Not all are 5", but close

not sure about

V20. Newer plus not known to boot loop as often as the V10
>>
>>60291565
Unfortunately BBs are unrootable due to their security features, otherwise I'd have bought one already (I already own a Passport).

>>60291721
You think that works? Most fingerprint sensors work similarly like a touchscreen, emitting a electrostatic field which is being transformed by the fingerprint. Just putting normal tape over it shouldn't make a big difference.
It should probably work with metallic duck tape over the fp sensors on the back.
>>
My nexus 6 is getting absolutely abhorrent battery life at this point (under 2 hours SOT). I don't actually care about screen resolution (720/1080p is fine), or the specs; I don't want something unusably laggy but don't need massive amounts of ram. The only two things I absolutely want are removable battery, and easy to unlock bootloader/flash a custom ROM (I want to flash lineageos or something similar without gapps to escape Google's spyware). I'm in Australia if it matters. I don't really care how much it costs but don't want to spend $1000+ AUD.
>>
>>60292214
>removable battery
LG G5 or Moto G5
>>
>>60291929
>You think that works?
sure, as long as the tape is thick enough. Just tried it myself, with scotch tape the fp reader worked just fine but with masking tape it didn't recognise my finger, in fact it didn't recognise any touch at all
>>
>>60292304
Sweet, thanks!
>>
>buy s8+

>>
>>60268760
Once you see the S8's display in real life it's hard to consider other options.
>>
Just wondering.
But when will the S8 likely have its first price drop?
Will it be when the next Note comes out?
I'm looking to get one but not really in a rush so I don't really mind waiting
>>
Honor 8 or Huawei P9? I'm really stuck between these two. P9 has the better looking screen and camera, honor has the 64gb option and 1gb more ram. Any experience with either anons?
>>
>>60289765
Never notice them. They look really terrible in video and I was worried it was going to be a real annoying downside to the curved screen but I haven't any reflections yet. I think the backlight eliminates the reflections for the most part.
>>
>>60287287
I have another question regarding this, looking more into it.

The Moto G5+ has the SD625 and a 3000mAh battery. The regular G5 has the 430 and a 2800mAh battery. How big of a difference would I see between those two devices?

I'm considering the non-plus model because I really don't want to give up a removable battery.
>>
Canadian here,
LG G6 or the S8?
>>
>>60293664
G6 if you're poor, S8 if you're cool and have money.
>>
>>60293656
Pretty big difference in performance, no big difference in battery life
I owned a BLU Life One X2 that had a SD430 like the G5 but it had a bigger battery and it held a charge pretty well unless the screen brightness was up high, the 625 is probably better in that aspect, but performance wise the 625 blows it out of the water
My GF got the Prime Edition G5+ and her battery life is awesome and the performance is great even though it only has 2GB RAM

Take it fwiw
>>
I can have a iPhone SE at 400€ with 1year of applecare.

Yay or Nay?

It's kinda hard to find a better deal right now, except mabe waiting for the OP5.
>>
>>60293664
G6 is better for video, is slightly more durable, and is cheaper. S8 if you're a numale cuck.

I got my G6 through bell for $100 because I've been with them since 2008 and if you get the right manager in the phone you'll get a top notch loyalty discount.
>>
>>60293664
they're both overpriced memey garbage, but the lg is less memey. i say the lg.
>>
>>60275867
You can't break it. The updates are signed and the phone won't allow you to install incorrect/broken update zips.

Just follow these instructions
>>60279615
It took more time to download than to install, it's piss easy.
>>
>>60291447
link please? needs root access i guess?

My P2 just arrived and it is fucking sexy, a huge upgrade from my Nexus 4. I've turned off the on-screen nav and trying to get used to using the combo button instead, it's a nice screen real estate improvement.

I wasn't impressed by Three's online ordering, though. They didn't even send a confirmation email and they shipped it in a plastic envelope with no protective padding/corrugation at all. The box is pretty dinged but the device seems to be undamaged. Their exclusivity period should end soon, so for UK anons considering it, you might want to wait and get it on Amazon.

Hi guys, I'm having trouble deciding on which phone should I get: HTC one m9 or Samsung Galaxy s6?
Anyone had any experience and could share it?
Or other phone suggestions for around £170.
>>
>>60294608
Yep, did that before setting it up even. I had the update already downloaded and on an SD card, so I just had to pop it in and boot to recovery.

I'm very attracted to the price point
>>
>>60294669
Do you do any gayman on it at all? I'd like an anon to report back with how it handles heavy load titles like EXCOM for eg. As in, proper full title games as opposed to muh asphalt that review sites are obsessed with.
