Hey there,
I have been reading about this recently, I knew it was kind of a thing, but I'm getting into it recently.
I get the general idea, but is it something that came up just now? I mean can it only be used with modern technology (as ie: I need a thunderbolt port or I'm fucked, and only works with PCI-e cards)
I'm not even interested in doing it, I don't use my laptop for heavy tasks, this is just mere curiosity... but how cool would it be to hook up an old Thinkpad (idk, a T42) to an AGP 3Dfx card with something similar to this? Sounds like it would be awesome, someone needs to make it happen if it can't be achieved yet.
As we all know mobile 3dfx doesn't exist

That would be really cool actually.
This thread is probably more /g/ related than most of the shit posted here.

The dock for the T20/T30/T40 era Thinkpads has a PCI slot that can be used for a video card. Unfortunately, the only way this is useful is to have multiple monitors - the memory bandwidth means you're always going to get more performace from your internal card even if your internal card is a 8MB S3 Savage and you're trying to connect to a GeForce FX5500 or Voodoo 5

That is pretty cool and sad at the same time.
It would not entirely be a matter of performance though, the simple fact of adding Glide support even if it was just with a shitty Voodoo Rush or Banshee could be interesting, doesn't need to be faster, but I don't know if it still would be enough.

Not worth the money or the effort. The bus speed and PCMCIA/ExpressSlot/USB speeds would bottleneck your performance. You could probably run the card at PCI-E x4 speeds at maximum.

If you managed to find a mini pci to pci converter you could probably connect a gpu via that but the chance of you being able to do that with an agp card is pretty low, you would need a pci to agp bridge(they actually exist) which are rare.

Ah, someone's just trying to unlock the graphical tricks in Tomb Raider aren't they? That should work just fine considering those early cards were designed to use a PCI slot in the first place.
And the entire reason AGP was invented was because PCI was such garbage.
