CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500X will keep above 60fps in every game. No i5
>R5 1600 is the best value for higher fps gaming and mixed usage, 1600x if you don't want to OC
>i7-7700k for high 144hz framerate but heats a lot.
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use. R5 if budget

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for LoL, dota2, rocket league, etc
>1050Ti - if on sale for ~$105. RX560 soon & looks good
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60-80hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60-75hz, inject SMAA and drop settings for some games
>1060 - Gets outperformed by the RX 580, consider only if AMD is not an option (CUDA, Linux)
>1070 - 1080p@144hz/1440p@60hz, poor value but performs well
>1080 - 1440@110hz. 120+FPS or 4k@60 by lowering a few settings
>1080Ti - 1440p@144hz/4k@60
>Freesync2 & Vega soon.

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS on a retailer page to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable.
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX is often cheaper as the board+case is usually less
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>A good air cooler is generaly wiser than an AIO

lol no that would be an awful decision
it's still great but not as safe as 4 core cpu would, but it's still fine. PCSX2 still needs a lot of optimization, but the g4560 is a good cpu for it, don't worry.

can someone explain the amd ram update shit and what ram 3200mhz ram to get with ryzen? Like some brands of 3200mhz are 2600mhz with ryzen but after update they will be 3200mhz? someone explain?
>>
>>60253553
some ram rated at specific (high) frequencies can't run at said rated frequencies even though they should
it doesn't boot when those frequencies are applied and then go back to default
the update is aimed at fixing this, allowing the high frequencies to work well

is this a good deal? you get 15% off your first three purchases, and i have $10 in credit. it comes out to around $565. or will new monitors with similar specs be coming out soon? since its only like one of a couple monitors thatre 1440p at 144hz. i feel like thats the sweet spot with current gpus. ive got an r9 390 that im planning to upgrade to a 1080 soon.

So question.

I'm thinking of selling my two 1080p 27" IPS monitors and replacing them with a single 4k IPS montior and another 1080p ips monitor in portrait configuration.

Would this be a good choice for a 4k screen?

These 2 HP IPS monitors are not vesa compatible and there is no ghetto way to do so.

I plan on just selling these.
>>

>it won't be 3200mhz untill after amd updates their shit?
yes
In fact, it could work even right now. It's pretty random, some manage to make it work and some don't. Some motherboard & kits have more luck than the others but it's still somewhat random.

The bios updates are planned for this month

>will the performance of c16 3200mhz still be shittier than with c14 g.skill flare X 3200mhz?
Yes, but the difference wouldn't be that big. 10 nanoseconds vs 8,75ns.
Most likely wouldn't do any difference in game. What Ryzen loves the most is frequency.
>>

I think you were trying to find out if the 144Hz was a typo or an actual confusion.

>>60254029

You responded to a post that mentioned 1440p vs 4k, two resolutions, and responded mentioning a refresh rate - probably a typo, or just read it wrong or something.
>>
>>60254042
why did geralts voice change from the first two witcher games?
>>
>>60254039
screens have a refresh rate. Corresponds to the number of time it can refresh itself (show a new image, called frame) per second. The higher, the smoother. The vast majority of screens refresh 60 times per second (60hz), some more expensive one can refresh 120 times per second (double the number of different frames per second), 144 times, or even up to 240.

Naturally, 120fps feels much much smoother than 60fps because there's twice the number of frames for the same amount of time.

Here is a slow motion video for you showing how smoother it is:
https://youtu.be/Ax8NxWn48tY?t=1m13s
>>
>>60254039

1440p (hint: the 'p' doesn't matter) = 2560x1440 pixels. 144hz = refresh rate.
>>
>>60254094
>probably a typo,
I think 144hz was what he meant, gamers love smooth framerate more than resolution. Resolution does make more sense for productivity stuff.

i think i get it now. so if i play video games, 4k is something i should pass then. i should get 1440p with a 144hz refresh rate because it's cheaper and smoother / less demanding?

Vishera is shit. Highly clocked vishera (4.5ghz+) is decent because that is the sort of clocks it was originally densgined to hit. Bulldozer is lol on all fronts even with the inherent clock advantage the 81xx chips tend to have versus their 83xx counter parts. The 9370 and 9590 (along with the 8320e and 8370e) are marvels of process maturity. Both show what happens when you can bin for absolute minimum leakage and balls-to-the-wall clocks (and fuck power consumption).

The 9590 is a monster even with bulldozer/vishera's inherent weaknesses but it comes at the expense of being a nuclear reactor.

>>
>>60254207

>>
>>60254145
The cheapest and most affordable would be 1080p 60hz. It's what the vast majority of people get because the vast majority of GPU can achieve such resolution & FPS
As you go into higher resolution, it takes a beefier GPU to deal with the increased number of pixels without the framerate tanking below 60hz. 4K for games is really, really demanding, and no GPU can achieve a constant 60 fps at 4K on all game. 1440p is fine even for mid-end $200 GPU.
If you want a higher refresh rate, you will also need a beefier GPU that can have a number of FPS (frame per second) as high (you generally want more though) as your screen's refresh rate. Otherwise, you're gonna need to drop a lot of settings which come at a visual quality cost.
And obviously, if you try to get both higher fps & resolution, it demands an even beefier GPU

1080p 120/144hz is done a lot because it's much more affordable than higher res and doesn't require that much GPU power, while looking very very smooth.
>>

only specs matter

>>
>>60254187

To be fair you can air cool a 9590 - though only 5 or so air coolers are actually capable of handling it. AMD was smart when offering the consumer version with an AIO (remember the 9370 and 9590 were originally OEM only). Any 250w+ TDP cooler can handle such a beastly chip. That said overclocking a 9590 to 5ghz all cores is mental and is almost entirely domain of water cooling - there are a few that have done it on air but realistically that is 360mm AIO or custom loop territory.

IMO the real test when reviewing a cooler of any sorts should be the 9590. It completley annihilates 99% of air coolers and cripples ALL 120mm rad AIO units.
>>
>>60254246
Prebuilts are never meant for gaming. The CPU is overpowered for the GPU and they always put in shitty components to cut costs, plus 16/32GB to market it to the idiots who think they need a bunch of ram they'll never actually use.

All Ryzen processors are unlocked, but they aren't good overclockers. A 1500X has two less cores than a 1600X. If you want something cheaper the 1600 is pretty much the same as a 1600X but it doesn't include XFR, which is basically just a stock 100MHz overclock.
>>
>>60254644
Experience. You can also youtube video for reference. Look and see what hits 100% usage first. If your CPU is at 20% usage but your GPU is at 100% then you GPU is the bottleneck. If your CPU is at 100% and your GPU at 20% then your CPU is the bottleneck. Ideally your CPU and GPU should have the same amount of usage.
>>
>>60254624

A 1600 is around $70 cheaper than the intel CPU and will provide more than enough performance for whatever you'll be using your PC for, and comes pre-packaged with a good cooler.

A good motherboard for that is an ASUS Prime B350 Plus. Though you may want to get 2 x 8gb RAM as Ryzen performs better with higher RAM. There have been some issues with ram compatibility with the Ryzen mobo's but BIOS updates are fixing the situation.
>>
>>60254664
Buy a 7600k and a Z270 motherboard. That's a terrible case, you could power this with a 650W PSU easily and you'll do just as well with a 1080Ti. But honestly, it looks like you just chose a bunch of expensive stuff for the hell of it.
>>
>>60254664
The 6950x is a server CPU. No reason you would ever use it for gaming unless you're just trying to show off. the 1500W PSU is overkill for a 500W power draw. A 650W PSU is more than enough for that build. The cooler is a poor choice for that CPU anyways. You'd be better off getting a 7700k and overclocking it to 5GHz on water.
>>
is the stock cooler that comes with the R5 any good? i'm mostly concerned with the noise, stock intel coolers always sounded like aids in my experience.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I guess I don't mind paying a little extra for the 1600X if that's the difference.

Looks like all that's left is a CPU cooler. I can' probably just sort through some popular ones right?
>>
>>60254758
They're supposed to be very quiet, AMD focused on noise when they developed them.

Keep in mind the cooler that comes with the 1500X, 1600, and 1600X is not the same as the one that ships with the 1400.

Is a 1700 considered a highend CPU or is the 7700k only considered high end?

I think the NH-D15 is the go to dual tower choice, the CRYORIG H7 is definitely the best value. But apparently the cooler that comes with it is decent too.
>>
>>60254781

The Cooler Master 212 Hyper EVO comes with the correct bracket to fit on the Ryzen. It seems to do very well. I mean if you don't want to overclock the 1600 that's fair enough but even a stock 1600 will perform very well, and the value compared to the 1600X is alot better.

>>60254821

No problem, check some youtube videos and benchmarks, it's a great CPU with excellent bang for buck. And yeah as you pointed out the 1600 comes with a cooler but the 1600X doesn't.

Just incase you do decide to overclock, which is a pretty simple process these days, Paul's Hardware on youtube has done a great guide specifically for overclocking the Ryzen 5
>>
>>60254821
Huh, you're right. Maybe the 1600X doesn't include a cooler.
>>
>>60254788
Generally, it's high end for high end. This is a very rough way to find out what works for what, but your CPU should cost about 3/5 of the GPU. A GTX 1080 costs about $500. 3/5 of that price (60%) is $300. The 7700k which is the best fit for it is about $330.

The better way is to just look at Logical Increments as they have an up-to-date price tier build.
>>
How well does ryzen work on linux?
>>
>>60254900
M.2 is the newer SSD. It's faster than a regular SSD so you might as well get it if your mobo can utilize it.
>>
>>60254841
It doesn't. The X series don't include a cooler since AMD assumes that you'll buy a 3rd party cooler for OC. (also because they don't want to use their Wraite Spire Max to compete with them)
>>
>>60254900
M.2 NVMe comes at a premium price but for an OS drive doesn't really provide any benefits. You can get SATA M.2 drives like the M.2 850 EVO but for all intents and purposes they're the same as a 2.5" SSD.
>>
Hey everyone, new to building.

I want to have a build that handles stable 60 fps at 1080p. Not ready to approach 2k/4k levels of resolution, yet. Right now through some Google searches and YouTube videos I gotten it down to two combinations.

1600 w/ RX 580
1500x w/ RX 480

The latter is more immediate and budget as I understand it while the first is sort of future proofing in a way with all the extra cores. From my target use, at what price discrepancy is it worth to go for the more expensive option?

Secondly, when looking at video cards there's so many different kinds of the same model, some brands even having 2 variations. What's the deal? In short, what are the best brands to go with for the RX 480 and 580?
>>
>>60254919
Ah. I've been planning my own build with a 1600, I didn't realize they didn't all include coolers.
>>
>>60254848
>Generally, it's high end for high end. This is a very rough way to find out what works for what, but your CPU should cost about 3/5 of the GPU. A GTX 1080 costs about $500. 3/5 of that price (60%) is $300. The 7700k which is the best fit for it is about $330.

That seems.. I dunno.. counter intuitive?... I mean I'd honestly think it could be figured out based off clock speed.. or some other metric rather than figuring it out based around price.

I mean I get logical increments and all but I kinda want to know the how/why they figured out the pairings so I can figure it out myself by looking at the data on the various components.

The first build I posted was a bottlenecking disaster according to the anon that responded and I couldn't figure it out myself as to why, and I was hoping that someone could point me at something I was missing.
>>
>>60254931
RX 580 is overclocked RX 480. You'd be crazy to pass up two extra cores for $30.
>>
>>60254931
The 580 costs the same as the 480 and is about 10% faster. They fixed annoying coil whine from the 480. Also, you can choose to look for a stock model if you want to save money and OC it yourself, or pay a premium for an OC'd model. The 1600 will save you in the long run since you won't have to upgrade as soon.

Isn't the only valid stat about a CPU the Frequency (aside from threads and cores, of course)
>>
>>60254978
The problem with trying to figure it based off clock speed is that clock speeds aren't comparable for different CPUs. A 6950x at 1.0GHz is much faster than a dual core CPU at 3.5GHz, for example. More cores and hyper threading change everything.

Alright I'm clueless about this, anything blatantly wrong with this build?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pQvDyf
Will be used for SC2 and some other games, not sure exactly - 60Hz 1080p, not super high quality. I'll be recording some gameplay with OBS or something.
Stock fans okay? Also it says I might need an adapter for the CPU cooler but I couldn't find anything else about that.
>>
>>60254989
>>60254995
Oh, okay. 1600 it is. It's $40 more where I live.
I'm not sure if I want to dive into overclocking for my first time I'll pass on the OC model for the 580 and save some dollars. Stock everything will be fine?
>>
Is a 1700 considered a highend CPU or is the 7700k only considered high end?
>>
>>60255077
Overclocking a GPU is easier than a CPU desu. Just open GPU-Z and make sure your unit's ASIC isn't shit. Then google your GPU + stable OC and see what settings people use and copy it.
>>
>>60255029
so the short answer is, there's no easy way to parse it out based off the specs of a given cpu/gpu etc, unlike the mobo/ram comparison where it's relatively simple to figure out if it can or can't?

Their testing of watch dogs 2 (which got them their criticism) was a 30 second run down an alley and back. Gamegpu tended to test 30 seconds through busy city streets whichs highlioghts cpu differences better. That said while I have a distrust issues with [H]ardocp nearly all of their testing is 5 minutes long which is fantastic for avoid boosting issues (i.e cpus/gpus boosting to high clocks because they have not warmed up yet) which is sadly side-stepped in many other reviews.

Pic 100% unrelated.
>>
>>60255113
It's just experience, unfortunately. You need to know the tiers and what you're using it for, along with the monitor resolution/hz to choose the CPU + GPU pairing.

Like, for example, the R5/R6/R7 are comparable to Intel's i5, which is best used for 1080p/144hz or 1440p/60hz gaming with the GTX1060/1070 or RX570/580 depending on budget.

The R8 1800x is just under the i7 7700k which would use a GTX1080/Ti for 1440p/144hz or 4K gaming.

PCSX2 only runs on 2 threads so an i5 would provide no benefit. The other 10% might have slowdowns regardless of the clockspeed, even with a 7350k.

I just put together a machine today but I have a question I hope someone could cover for me.

After putting the mother board in and screwing it to the copper plugs I've noticed the USB ports on the back aren't perfectly aligned with the slots on the panel. Is this normal? The top half of the panel is perfect but the bottom USB and audio outputs are shifted very slightly to the left. They're still usable but I'm curious if this is a problem I should solve before I do my first boot or if it's just one of those things.

I can't see any way to fit the board any tighter on that area since it's almost touching the case already and I obviously don't want it to do that.

>>
>>60255567
If you're sure it's in, it's normal. No problem. Usually due to the mounting plate being miss aligned by a millimeter or two. only adding washers behind the board will bring the alignment back.

Nothing changed.
>>
>>60255567

Looks like a proprietary (non-ATX) shaped motherboard, so I'm guessing the standoffs to mount a new motherboard into the case are also non-ATX.

I don't know about that specific model but I know in the past Dell has used proprietary power connectors on their PSUs to power the system, so no idea if that PSU would have standard ATX 24 pin power. The RAM, CPU, and hard drives are about the only sure bets to be "transferable" out of any older Big Box PC. Word on the street is that most recent stuff uses a lot more regular OEM components, but seeing as how yours is a few years old I wouldn't bet on it.

If you go out and buy a pre-built pc/laptop yes. If you buy your own key, it's not locked to any specific hardware. However, if you upgrade your 7 or 8 license to 10, it becomes locked to that mobo regardless if you bought the key or it was on a prebuilt.

My 1600X is so comfy.

Have twitch loaded side by side on the two. 720p@60fps stream.
On the 2500k it's using 20-50% cpu. I can't play a game at the same time. If I try to load a cities skylanes game it takes like 3+ minutes and the game drops to 1-8fps while loading.
On the 1600X, the twitch stream and chromium uses about 4-9% cpu, never more than 65% of one of the 12 threads plus a little bit of 2 others. Cities Skylines map loads in about 15-20 seconds, and never dips below 15fps while loading (doesn't hit 100% on a thread, frame dips are just something that happens during map loading anyway), and without dropping frames on the twitch stream.
The i5-2500k is off a WD black, but it's so slow it's not like it'd even keep up with the SSD.

I love how I just don't have to give a shit about anything anymore. It's just so overpowered. I had to close browsers to play on my 2500k, and still would get heavy stutters then sometimes.
I wish I had the proper tools and time for proper tests.

Yes. G4560. Though it'll falter if you have to do software rendering for some pcsx2 games, and it won't handle pcsx3.
1600 and 1700 are really good for pcsx3, but much more expensive.
For most emulators, like Dolphin and SNES, you can run them just off the iGPU of the G4560 with no discrete GPU.

Are there any good 1440p/144hz monitors with practically no bezels?

I'm tired of having big chunks of shit around my screen, and seeing as how curved screens on both monitors and phones are possible, you'd think a screen with pretty much no bezel would exist.
Specifically I would like a 27-inch monitor.

Am I looking for something that doesn't exist yet?
>>
>>60256132
>>60257039
Because the RX560 are different dies. Different wafers. They can't make them all simutaniously.
RX570 are just cut down RX580 dies. And AMD chose to run RX550s first and sell them for too much..

There is the 1050Ti, but the RX560 looks like it'll be significantly cheaper and faster.
If you see a 1050Ti on sale for around $100, go for it.
>>
>>60258249
That's a sexy monitor.
The MG279Q is a nice monitor, but has significant bezel compared to that.

There's a lot of really nice monitors coming out this year, but they're $1k+.
>>
>>60258081
Read reviews. Tweaktown does pretty good ones. And silentpcreview but they don't review enough stuff.
CFM-vs-noise.
I'd try to keep to under $25 though. Anything more is a waste.
>>
What software do you use to create fan profiles on ryzen (not in the bios)? I always used speedfan but the only sensors it finds are the sdd and the gpu.
>>
>>60258280
Yeah, I've been eyeing the MG279Q since it isn't too expensive while still having nice specs, but I've always wanted a monitor with no bezels, but it doesn't seem like there are that many on the market, and if there are, they are usually 4k 60hz, or plain 1080p.

Also do me a favour, turn on your monitor, unplug it from the wall without turning it off, wait a minute, plug it back in. Some monitors are shit (including mine) and have this issue related to the capacitor or something along those lines.

Hey guys, short question:
If people talk about push and pull fans, is that strictly restricted to cpu coolers or do these mechanics also apply to the case ?
I.e. using a non favorable pull fan as front case fan, would it still matter ?
>>
>>60259936

Push/pull only applies to headstinks/radiators as by definition they are pushing/pulling through a huge chunk of metal. Any fan use in a case is inherently push.

Is this build good as in value? Gonna play low end games that are more CPU intensive (Hearts of Iron 4 etc). This is about 800€ where I'm buying it (Germany). Will hook it up to a 1080p 75hz monitor. Is this going to be overkill? Can I improve something?

Also, how far will I be able to OC that 1600 with the stock cooler.

Yes

3.7GHz most likely. I do that on my r7 1700 (which heats more because more cores), though it's not sustainable under prolonged 100% load.

Yes. You can play most AAA games maxed at 1080p 60fps at least with that.
You'd be fine with a 1500X and the RX560 when that comes.

Hearts of Iron is more single threaded and it'll be easier to clock a 1500X to 4GHz for that. The 1600 will need a better cooler for that.

The 1070 barely does 144fps minimum in Overwatch maxed.

Sounds great, thanks. Also, when you were talking about a 4Ghz OC on the 1500X, is that actually possible with the stock cooler?
>>
>>60261247
Yes. The 1600 and 1500X have the same exact stock cooler. Since the 4 core puts out a bit less heat, it can usually get like 3.9-4.05 on the 1500X compared to 3.7-3.85 on the 1600.

1600 will need a better cooler to hit 4+.
>>
>>60261290
>1600 will need a better cooler to hit 4+.
1600 can't sustain 4GHz on 100% load with stock cooler. Not even 3.9.

x370 motherboards tend to have better VRMs, but b350 VRMs are good even if you want to go to 4GHz.
If it's reaching high clock you want, downgrading the mobo to a b350 (with good vrms) and then upgrading the cooler to a very big one with 2 140mm fans on it would make more sense.

Should I be able to fit all my components in this case? partpicker does not list the case I'm planning on buying. From what I've seen the Corsair Carbide 400C seems to be aimed at liquid cooling, however I want to use a Noctua NH-U14S instead. I used a case that seems to be similar in dimensions in partpicker, however I don't know if the compatibility checker also checks dimensions.

Case: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/corsair-carbide-400c-midi-tower-gaming-case-black-window-cc-9011081-ww-ca-216-cs.html

This build is basically saving me from the toaster life I've always lived. I've gone with a 60htz monitor because I mainly play fighting games, so 120 or 144 won't make any difference, fighting games only play at 60. In particular I want something that will run Tekken 7 better than the console version. I also like my singleplayer games but I'm not into big open world RPGs like Witcher or big team games like Battlefield, so I won't be needing something like a 1080. I also don't need a good mouse and keyboard since I mainly use controllers or joysticks. Lastly AMD is not an option for me as I've seen many games I like be incompatible with AMD GPUs due to their PC versions being an afterthought.
