>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 for dwarf fortress & single-purpose emulator HTPC
>R5 1500X will keep above 60fps in every game. No i5
>R5 1600 is the best value for higher fps gaming and mixed usage, 1600x if you don't want to OC
>i7-7700k is good but bad value. A 1600x is probably better for you
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use. R5 if on budget.

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for LoL, dota2, rocket league, etc
>1050Ti - if on sale for ~$105. RX560 soon & looks good
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60-90hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60-75hz, inject SMAA and drop settings for some games
>1060/1070 - Gsync is bad value; Freesync is cheaper. See below
>1080 - 1080p@90-144hz. Min worth getting Gsync monitor for
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144hz. 4K with settings to low-medium, some maxed
>Freesync2 & Vega soon. Vega will likely be the best 4K GPU, but we don't know yet

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS on a retailer page to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable.
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX is often cheaper as the board+case is usually less
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs

So I have been working on this build and I think this is the last time I want to get it checked. Main things I want to double check on is, is the cooler necessary? Should I stick with it, get a better one, or rely on the stock? Other than that everything I think is set and I am not building it for a bit to hope that prices go down and to see how the Vega does.
>>
>>60248661
Vega is june 31 at worst
Up to you to decide if it's worth to wait. If you have a freesync monitor it is definitely, otherwise it's very unsure if it's worth to wait or not
>>
Are their motherboards that have less input lag than other motherboards? I am trying to look for a good motherboard for ryzen 1700 that can use ddr4 3200 ram that has no input lag.

There was a guy on overclock forums named r0ach that made an old guide in 2013 about which motherboard had the least input lag.

AMD has been Intel prime rival but failed miserably back then in around 2011 when they released Bulldozer which is a disaster. That leads to Intel to heavily dominate the market, they become super lazy & at some point, evil, in the market. Now many ppl just want to shake Intel to the core so the guys will be back to business, and the CPU market is back to being healthy once more.

And AMD's live benchmarks have been very promising. How promising you might ask, AMD's $500 chip beat Intel's $1000 chip.

As a former user of AMD 10 years ago (now I use E3 1220v2), I have to say AMD isn't really innovative now, they're just playing fair, it's just Intel has been milking & idling for so long. Edit: For more info about AMD is just playing fair while Intel being too evil, AMD Ryzen development cost is only near 10% of Intel's development cost.
>>
>>60249019
cool text dude
>>
>>60248959
This mainly due to gamers who dont care much for more cores they just want FPS lots of it so single core which most games use is what there interest is.

Multi core these days is very important which many don't realize during gaming using many apps in background alt-tabbing ect. I think when Ryzen arrives mindset of many will change when they see when you use several apps Ryzen is awesome and way better at it then Intel.

This will take some time to sink in many mainstream BRAINS thats Ryzen is the way to go.
>>

>>
>>60249019
Nice blog pal.
>>
What desk/chair should I buy? Preferably from newegg or amazon
>>
A lot of people may disagree with me, but I am getting the 1800X for gaming and a little bit of video editing.

I believe more games will start to use more cores in the very near future, and those extra cores will come in very handy.

Even if they don't the chip turbo clocks to 4.0 Ghz, and XFR's to 4.1, which I think should be more than enough anyway from the looks of the Ryzen's IPC improvements.
>>
>>60249061
This is true, but this doesn't automatically means that a 7700k is worthless. Very few make use of the 8 cores of the r7 1700, and the 7700k achieves higher FPS (though at much much higher temperatures & cpu usage).

So it's not like the i5 7600k where it's a shit cpu from the start and should always be replaced by an R5 1600. The 7700k has it's uses
>>
>>60249077
>>60249039
How long will it take for people to understand that these chips are power-houses, aimed at productivity and content creation above everything else? It's not aimed specifically at gaming but morons don't know this. Even with the extra single core performance, the 7700k is objectively speaking, an inferior CPU. It's not as powerful, period.

Funny part is, the people who argue for Kaby Lake are exactly the type of people who dream of owning liquid cooled 6900k systems. If you go up to a Intel Fanboy and offer him a 6900k and a x99 motherboard in exchange for his 7700k and Z270 board, those extra 10 fps won't matter to him anymore.

TL;DR - Idiots if you ask me...
>>
>>60249090
That's what they said during phenom six cores and bulldozer were released.

More cores is just a meme.
>>
damn what happened to the build thread?

>>60249105
>Even with the extra single core performance, the 7700k is objectively speaking, an inferior CPU.
I agree with this. But can an R7 1700 achieve as high FPS as the 7700k? Not really, so for straight up just high framerate gaming, the 7700k is often a better choice
>>
>>60249128
No one is going to praise intel anymore

>>60249128
It was fine two threads ago
But one lad came in and decided to shill Ryzen to his maximum, and apparently no one dares to challenge his shitty opinions

>>
>>60249105
There's a lot of problems with Ryzen right now. Motherboard issues, ram issues. Plus the average enthusiastic pc user does not use that many cores.

>>

if on budget (read: lower than $700 or so) it's G4560, mid range R5 1600 and any higher than R5 1600 it depends on whether if it's used for games or not. games it's 7700k not games it's R7 1700

The 1600 is 6 cores / 12 threads. For the price its a fantastic chip. Going higher core count is generally the domain of people who can use the extra threads or those with money to burn (like me).

Please, for a second put away your dogma and tell me.

I'm from canada the terrible terrible wasteland where computer parts are 3x the price anywhere else in the world. So I'm looking for a midranged processor mainly for gaming (but for some audioengineering as well)

I have a choice between i5 6500 and r5 1600.

Please I dont care about your dogma, I dont care about intel and I dont care about AMD. I just want to know would the small price increase be worth it to get the ryzen 5 1600 (because I have to get a new mobo too)

1600X build. Not for me, but for a friend that can't be arsed to OC aside from getting the memory to hopefully 2933 or 3200.

Mostly looking for advice/experience/commentary on the most stable B350+Memory combo. Remaining parts will be fleshed out once that's settled.

>i'm just confused because some people say you dont need the extra cores
The average gamer do because the alternative right now are i5, which near 90% usage in every game and often go at 100% for a very short time causing stutter
6 cores or 4 cores 8 threads (i7) do not reach such high usage. So for the average gamer, r5 1600 is the sweet spot.

Reposting from previous thread - Can somebody help me bring down the price on this build?

It's my first, and I don't have much money to spend (maybe $1000 - $1500 including peripherals), but I don't want to sacrifice a whole lot of performance.

I'll be using it mainly for gaming, stuff like CSGO, Dwarf Fortress, Crysis, etc, preferably at or near 60fps.

Thank you.

The R7 1700 is generally compared to the $50 more expensive 7700k, althought it should be instead compared to the 6900k because the r7 1700 is not a gayman cpu.
it loses hard in framerate to it, but has more consistent frame pacing (less stutter)

If you do just regular gaming, no. High framerate gaming / video encoding / streaming, yes.
The performance boost doesn't change anything for good old 60fps gaming, but it's nice to have at things where the CPU is actually the limiting factor

Same thing, never reaches 70.

I've done alot of research on the fx chips, and they #1 run notoriously hot (but are fine running hot) and #2 are inaccurate in temp readings.

But, you're thinking its cpu throttling? It acted like this, at the exact same temps before with the stock cooler. Perhaps a defective chip?

It can handle a billion drives, any type of cpu cooler you can think of, is sound dampened and has an understasted asthetic. In addition to that is is also generally held together with thumb screws which means no screw drivers needed to change its internal layout around.

I have the R4 (same case but with a little less utility) and love it, but the inner pleb in me wants to buy a Dark Base pro 900.

The game did change a lot in the meantime. If it's the CPU limiting you, you'd get shit fps even at the lowest graphical settings, so try that

>>60251000
Ryzen is made in a way that the communication speed between each CCX (group of cores, every Ryzen CPU has two groups of core) is tied directly to ram frequency. So the higher your RAM frequency is at, the more powerful your CPU becomes
Also, increasing frequency lowers the latency, so even if you get shit timings it's still fine because you'd go from 11.0ns to 11.2 at worst which is a pretty small tradeoff

>why not a 120mm fan?

Two main reaons-

1) I didn't have a spare 120mm fan at the time
2) That 70mm fan or so fan is off the stock 8320e cooler and is a lot thinner than your typical 120mm fan which gives me the clearance to the back panel I need.

I used to have a fan from the 8350 stock cooler that was an rpm monster until I accidently destroyed it - that thing at 100% would spin so fast it actually created enough lift to, well, lift itself off a desk.

The entire setup though has been replaced by a ryzen build which is superior in every single front but I do fondly remember overclocking my little vishera chip to just shy of thermal shutdown.

Neither the 7700k and 1700 can hit 144hz. So it doesn't matter.

There were some bench tests done with various games but going at a shitty game like league of legends, the 7700k was able to hit 218 frames compared to the 1700 which hit 201 frames.

As you can see there really isn't a difference between the two although the 7700k is hgiher by 10~ frames in most games.
>>
>>60251786

> I might wait an hour and keep this

And the rest. If you want to ensure a 100% stable will-never-fail overclock you'll want a good 12 to 24hrs of prime95 stable. I live dangerously so 8hrs of prime95 is stable enough for me.

Unlike gpus cpus are held to much, much higher standards in the consumer space. A gpu can be afforded to crash and reboot - cpus not so much.

That western black is for entreprise (it has less vibration & better longevity), you might want to save up some money and get a regular 2TB instead of a western black one. Note that Western Digital Blue is not the same as Caviar Blue (it's much slower)
>>
>>60251858

10 frames when it is the difference between 200fps and 190fps is nothing. 10 frames when it is the difference between 20fps and 30fps is a lot.

Point is, context matters.
>>
>>60251871
The 7700k is the one that will have the best chances of hitting that 144hz and manages to hit it in a lot of games.
And no you're not fucked, 120 ~ 130fps doesn't look awful on a 144hz screen
>>
>>60251871
If you want fluid 144hz you will probably have to wait for newer stuff to come out. If you want to get as close as possible to near stable FPS at that refresh rate, get the intel processor. If you want something almost as good but better in other areas if you're rendering or multitasking, get the Ryzen.

>>60251930

Not if they're recent games. If you want to play League of Legends at 144hz, then yeah.
>>
>>60251930
No. 120 yes, but 144hz is pushing it too much.
Now if we're talking light games like LoL, Counter Strike, Rocket League, pretty much any cpu can hit that
but not in AAA, you won't hit 144
>>
>>60251930
The Ryzen at the moment won't hit 144hz but it will almost hit it, but Intel won't really hit 144hz either. Most people probably won't notice much of a difference between the Ryzen 1600 and the 7700k when your FPS is that high on a 144hz screen.

I would say get it unless you absolutely want the most frames and don't care about anything else, in that case you'd want the 7700k. But the 1600 can perform almost as good and is $100 less and excels in multitasking compared to the 7700k.

I would get the 1600
>>

You go 7700k and you have 4 cores 8 threads which is pretty shit for VM stuff (compared to 8 cores), the only advantage of going 7700k would be 10% higher framerate in games but that comes with the huge tradeoff of 50% less core. Not worth it at all.

Confirm the PSU is plugged in.

Also confirm the power switch on the PSU is flipped to the on position.

If both are true, and all your connections are correct you may have a doa PSU.

'upgraded' somewhat from AyyMD to Intel.

I got a 1151 socket board and want to know what's the best price to performance ratio for a CPU cooler?

And what's better 2x4GB DDR4 ram sticks or 1x 8GB ram stick?

Thanks
>>
>>60252512
What CPU do you exactly have?

>And what's better 2x4GB DDR4 ram sticks or 1x 8GB ram stick?
Two sticks give dual channel, a theoritical double the ram bandwidth.
>>
>>60252521

Generally speaking though most plebs need not worry about dual vs single channel. If it is tri or quad channel you most certainly are doing something that benefits from it.

Thanks will get 2x 4GB then, even for any minimal pros

I got a 4770K, came from AMD 8320

Any cooler recommendations or is stock cooler enough, not going to overclock.

The 4770k doesn't comes with a stock cooler and will heat too much for it.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO should be good, though they are some better choices at around the same price range.

Re-check every cable coming from your PSU, ensure that every component that requires power has the correct power cable plugged into it. Make sure there are no connectors on the sockers which are left empty, i.e. no 4 pin connectors in an 8 pin socket.

Make sure your motherboard has the power cable connected, and do another check on the front panel connectors.

Of course there are a million one them but I'm having trouble finding a CPU benchmark in modern games that isn't using a 1080 or 1080ti. I want to see how the CPU bottlenecks the GPU. If a 1080ti gets 100 fps with a i5 and 150fps with a i7 will a 1060 get 80 fps with an i5 and 120fps fps with an i7 or will it get 80 fps with an i5 and 80fps with an i7.
Basically is it percentage, a hard limit, or is it going to be different in every situation.

>>
>>60252872
>If I buy a 3000, i still have to overclock the ram
Yes
The rated speed of a RAM stick is there to indicate that it can reach that speed for sure, but by default all DDR4 are at 2400MHz and nothing over it is considered an overclock. You'll have to use the XMP/DOCP profile in the bios that will put the RAM to the same voltage, latency & frequency it is rated at.
>>
>>60252894
Thanks for the heads up.

what's the advantage of overclocking ram? is it necessary for a 7700k?
>>
>>60252894
>and nothing over it is considered an overclock.
everyhing over it*
>>
>>60252916
>what's the advantage of overclocking ram?
More memory bandwidth, which usually lead to small fps in gains (very small). Some games that are coded like shit benefit highly from memory bandwidth (fallout, skyrim & anything on that shitty bethesta engine), and APU (cpus with integrated) also benefit from pretty high gains with faster ram

Ryzen CPUs also get a big boost with faster RAM
It is not necessary, and next to useless for a 7700k

The case fans need to be plugged in to the correct places on the motherboard as they can draw power from it, rather than through the PSU. Which motherboard are you using?

Anon is wrong but not by much. The official JEDEC spec for DDR4 is 2133mhz. Anything over that is considered and overclock and has to be validated by the chip manufacturer, memory manufacturer and motherboard manufacturer.

In practical terms the highest speed officially supported is 2400mhz for Intel (depending on channels/density) and 2666mhz for ryzen (again, depending on channels/density). Some motherboards support higher clocks but that - strictly speaking - eats into the engineer safety margin of cpu IMC.

Rzen for example tends to cap out at 3200mhz (though some kits are good for 3600mhz) whereas skylake/kabylake can - on the toppest of tier boards - take nearly 4000mhz. Naturally there are additional factors (voltage, silicon lottery to name two) but it is doable. The hard side of this is anything over 2400mhz (Intel) and 2666mhz (ryzen) is considered overclocking which means you can kiss your warranty goodbye should a cpu fail when running sach clocks.

For ryzen the taichi and crosshair are the two best boards for high clocks but even now (May AGESA pending) require tweaking as 99% of ram over 2133mhz is technically tweaked for XMP which is an Intel based overclocking profile (understandably ryzen reacts differently).
>>
>>60253034

Check your motherboards diagram, it will clearly state where the case fans should be plugged in, if not in the main front panel socket.

As for Windows, I guess just do what it says and see what happens. You have your HD/SSD connected properly?

Upgrade the GPU after Vega comes out to something mid-range, and then upgrade the rest in 1-2 years?

Mainly used for games at 1080p/144hz and some light video rendering.

also i apparently put my ram in slots 2 &4. i thought i was supposed to put them in alternating slots to use dual channel
>>
>>60253160

if you can sell cpu + mobo + ram though, you'd get a higher price by doing it right now. And an upgrade to an R5 1600 would be noticeably better.

It depends on the mobo but yeah that's usually how it's done. Check speccy / CPU-Z to see if it says dual channel or single channel for your ram

So 2666 is safest and most reliable with Ryzen? Thanks with for the heads up anon, will probably screencap that post or something.
>>
>>60253324

If your motherboard says it is good for xyzMHZ on certain kits hten that is what it is good for. 2666mhz on ryzen - assumnig your kit is rated for that or more - should be easily doable by setting a default profile. Myh own RAM is rated for 3200mhz but it simply will not boot atr that using the standard profile offered by the crosshair hero because my kit is not on the QVL. If I fuck with the external clock generator I can clock it way above 2666mhz but that isn't exaclty a "fire and forget" setting.
>>
How much RAM is truly necessary these days?

Is 8GB good enough if I were to play solely on 1080p?
>>
>>60253440

8GB is enough for gaming right now, more if you want to do photo/video editing as well, but gaming you are good.
>>

As a rule RAM usage is independant of resolution. Vram (i.e what your gpu packing) does have a correlation to resolution.

I hear Battlegrounds requires a very high end graphics card? Could a GTX 1060 do well with it at 1080p?
>>
>>60253862
I have a 1080 and get from 20-150 fps. Varies depending on how many people are around you, and where you are on the map. Primorsk gets the highest FPS I've seen in the game, I've gotten 150 there. Yasnaya gets like 40-60.

A 1060 should do fine though, you should really get a steady 60+, I usually maintain above 60, however it does dip below, and often.

The game is unoptimized.
