And I would not monitor my child's internet traffic. I would educate them on the dangers of the internet and keep a close eye on their behavior, but I would not cross the line of reading whatever private thoughts they share online.

I would regulate time spent online, and especially regulate internet hours. I'd even consider installing a blocker which just flat out turns the internet off after 12 pm. One of the worst things you can do as a teen is get in the habit of staying up all night on the internet. That is way more dangerous and more likely than them getting into trouble with some kind of predator or eloping with a stranger.

Sorry for the blogpost, just thought I'd' share my experiences with unmonitored internet use. If I had kids there's no fucking way I'd give them that much freedom, I'd let them post on forums and shit in private as long as I knew what sites they were on.

I'm not going to have children but I know friends that were tracked and monitored by their parents and yelled at for anything "bad" they did on the internet. It didn't help them, they had trauma as a result and still can't fully trust people or feel like anything they do is private as a result of having it happen while they were still young.

My parents trusted me and I trusted them back and I have very good relations with them still despite moving out years ago. If they had monitored me when I was younger and gave me shit for it I would have probably never bothered calling them again once I was out at 18 because my trust with them would have been shattered.
