so... you accept the fact that you are wearing/buying a watch because it's pretty, like say... a piece of jewelry?

what are you, a woman/tranny?

also, craftsmanship argument is not really valid because the level of technology that goes into quartz watches requires a much higher level of expertise and manpower and technology.

There is a reason you don't find workshops or one man teams making a quartz clock from scratch.

Get photon power if you must have a watch, like pic related..

It's not just because it's pretty. You can buy quartz watches that look just as pretty on the outside, you know.

How the fuck do you even appreciate a memenical if you have to wind it up and set the time if you leave it unattended for a few days. And even to appreciate the inner workings you need a open heart watch or one with a glass back.

Just accept the fact you are a woman at heart and just want shiny things.

/wt/, can induction stoves cause magnetization of a movement? The 7S26C in my SNK809 has suddenly started running like 10 minutes slow per day, and aside from the obvious conclusion that the 7S26 is shit, the only thing I could think of that caused this is my parents' new induction stove, which I was using while visiting them on the weekend. I hear they give off pretty strong magnetic fields but so do cell phones.

That's not a watch, fag.
It's a computer that pretends to be a watch so that the manufacturer can get the goyim to give them more shekels.

Wrong.
The traditional watch format with case, dial, hands, markers, crystal ... is entirely obsolete if all you're after is functionality.

Rolexes are pretty tough. And what do you consider to be a cheap shitter? I mean, honestly, a low end seiko diver is pretty tough when it comes to normal use as well.

$500 is on the high end of fair, but not completely out of line. Keep in mind you will probably need to pay about $100 to service this thing once it comes in. If it is serviced then $500 is actually not bad. If not, try to knock them down at least $50-$80 or keep looking.

The quality of the pictures you posted is not really good enough to have a detailed look at the watch, but from what I can see it at least isn't overly fucked up. See if you can get photos of the movement, make sure that shit isn't covered in rust or all scratched up from the last hack watchmaker who got his hands on it.
>>
>>60214539
No, they're incredibly flimsy causing that guy's complaints of it not holding the watch in place or whatever. Considering how thin they look too you're retarded to use them on a bulky diver or anything that isn't a slim vintage.
>>
>>60214610
They are flimsy side to side because all the weight is on the watch head, they are a bit stiff in terms of wrapping around your wrist or getting shaped around the springbars on a watch.

Archimede have the smallest flieger type at 36mm.
Perhaps a bit too small.

I like how this company has the option for "lefthanded" cases where the crown points to the left. I would think that for a righty, this setup might in fact be more comfortable as the oversize onion crown can't possible dig into your wrist.

Anyway, for a few years I was thinking that the flieger look was going to be overplayed, but my fears have been assuaged somewhat.

I think the navigator dial/B-Uhr is more interesting as its emphasis is on precision of telling the exact minute. The standard flieger is nice and legible, but the other one is more unique.

Think of it like a uglier turtle/skx that has some pretty large lume applications. The larger the lume application, the brighter lume is perceived to be. And then combine it with the fact that Seiko Lumibrite pretty much outshines anything means you've got a very bright lume watch that makes multi-thousand dollar divers from other companies look like they're using some sort of play-version of lume by comparison.

Gaskets only work if the case, stem, crystal, and caseback are all fitting within original factory tolerances, which is a totally unreasonable expectation out of a half century old watch, other than if the watch is NOS

Thanks. I tend to gravitate to high-end production movements and a penchant for relatively austere designs with baton indices.

I'm going to be selling a few of those eventually (such both G-Shocks other than the GWM-5610, the 1967 Seikomatic-P with the linen dial and the Seiko LM Special 5206-6061) to make room in my collection for another 36mm datejust. I want a blue dialed 16200 quite badly, but I'm not letting myself get one until I sort out all the watches I want to sell.

I would probably have ended up with more vintage King Seikos and Grand Seikos, but that 52 King Seiko Special has been so amazing that I don't feel the need to add any more of them to my collection.

A combination of factors. The 52xx movement is one of the best production automatic movement designs ever made, and it has very high inherent accuracy. In this regard it is often compared to the ETA 2892-A2 and Omega 56x/75x which were designed around the same person in the 1970s and all have very good designs.

Next, the Seiko factory making the King Seiko Specials knew that their high-end watches were going to be switching to quartz soon, and so they absolutely lavished attention on the King Seiko Specials to leave a statement for posterity of their abilities. They cherry picked the parts and adjusted them to a much higher standard than normal.

I got it in great condition and had it serviced by a phenomenal independent watchmaker who specializes in vintage movements, and after service I spent a fair bit of time dialing in the regulation using my own timegrapher.

My Rolex is in the middle of a similar extended performance, actually. I last set it on April 22 and it's continuing to hover around d +0 total.
>>
>>60222033
ah. The gray isn't swappable/you don't plan to part with it?

In any case, I'm open.
>>
>>60222124
Yeah, it's 36mm. The movement is a 52xx variant, though not as finely made and adjsuts as the King Seiko, it still keeps time to within +2 spd.

The 52xx is a 28,800 bph movement. Seiko ended up resurrecting it in the 1990s as the 4s15 and used it for a while before deciding it was too nice for Seiko and moving the caliber to Credor.
>>
>>60222110
nicer mechanicals really can run quite tight.

That being said, you can often achieve great accuracy simply by how to set your watch down for the night. He'll have to be the one to tell us if this was part of his plan, but you see the largest gain was when he set his watch down at "3 up" (crown up in the air) and that's when he was behind and it caught back up.

If you find out that your watch runs very close to perfect in one position you can set it that way overnight, but you might also know in another position it runs a little slow, and in another it runs slightly fast. So if you know recently you've let the watch run down more and it's fallen behind, simply put it in the fast position during the nights to catch itself back up during sleep. That was an automatic watch that is always worn never needs to be manually wound or have the time reset.
>>
>>60222234
>That was an automatic
That should just say "An automatic." no 'that was' needed.

>>60222234
You are correct. I set it 3up that time because I know that KS Special runs fastest in that position and I wanted it to gain a little time. What is unusual is that it runs so close to +/-0s/d in most other positions leading it's daily variation to be a random walk around 0 without normally needing to use the positional variance.

My two tone Datejust, by contrast, loses time on the wrist and gains it in most other positions, so I've ended up finding that dial down seems to work best for balancing the time lost when worn.
>>
>>60222110
you know how they say a stopped clock is right twice a day?

so it is with drift on a movement. at some point, for some time, every movement will be at 0 spd. usually weeks on a poorer quality movement, months for a better one.

why are you down on mecha quartz? Seiko vk64. why the hate?
>>
>>60222397
yeah but even the 6r15 is low-beat, it just has a longer power reserve (I think).

frankly I'm disappointed that Seiko hasn't developed a higher-beat (and affordable) movement.

And this new 43mm 62mas homage? $1000+?? What on earth, Seiko!
>>
>>60222420
It won't retail for $1,000.

Also Seiko doesn't even have to develop one. They should just bring back the 4s15 from Credor.
>>
>>60222420
Longer power reserve, and more accurate.

Also the new SPB051/SPB053 won't be >$1000 unless you're a complete shmuck who pays full MSRP for watches.
>>
>>60222400
$600-$700. outrageous. I bet the blue will look great in person though.
>>
>>60222466
Is that MSRP?
>>
>>60222434
I just looked that up, 28,800/40 hour power reserve.

Why would they have deferred to the 4r36 or the 6r15 as standard movements? bummer.

Naturally I understand Credor needing a good, high-beat movement. But did Credor's hardly Seiko's flagship earner. Surely they could have designed something unique for Credor.
>>
>>60222486
yeah, maybe I'll take a look at it in a year or so
>>
>>60222498
Even better, the 4s15 was actually designed in the early 1970s by Daini Seikosha as the 52xx. Seiko brought it back in the 1990s, used it for a while, and then decided it was too good to use in mid-range Seikos so they shipped it to Credor.

To this day Seikos from the 1990s with the 4s15 (such as the white Alpinist) go for $500-$1,000 because they are so sought after.
>>
>>60222533

As for mechshit being art, well... have you seen what passes for 'modern art'? Fucking brainwashed goyims sucking at the mountain jew cocks of 'muh craftsmanship', just like how women go wet for jewelry and carbon rocks.

The fucking swiss watch industry lost the quartz race and ended by creating a niche by brainwashing morons into believing that antiquated timekeeping technology is somehow 'haute horology'.

The one I got was from Ebay from the following listing:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/161525178927

As you can see, the springbar is very close to the end so it does not leave a gap between the strap and the metal.
>>
>>60223713
Finding 5206s in that condition is not that hard on Yahoo! Japan Auctions using a proxy bidding service, though the dial in that one is from a watch that was on Antique Watch Bar.

However, the reason I got the blue dial from them was because that specific blue dial is very rare, not because of the condition. Also keep in mind that the prices on Y! Japan Auctions are very good, but it is very much caveat emptor over there.
>>
>>60225935
That's a matter of subjective taste, but for me its the movement that is head and shoulders above most chronograph movements.

One of my pet peeves with chronographs is the difficulty in reading the chronograph minute count quickly and precisely of a little subdial. The Lemania 5100 doesn't have that issue because bot the chronograph seconds and minutes are on the central register.

Also, unlike the 1861 it hacks, has a 28,800 bph beat-rate, and has what is probably the single most shock resistant chronograph function to ever appear on a mechanical watch as a result of the chronograph second and minute hands being directly driven from the main geartrain, rather indirectly as it normally done.

To give you an idea of the regard in which the L5100 is held, there very briefly was a moonwatch cased L5100 Speedmaster made in the 1970s. It is nicknamed "The Holy Grail" Speedmaster amongst collectors and is literally the single most valuable Speedmaster variant.

>being so small minded and petty that you cannot even grasp that the soul comes from the care and attention put into making the object by the people who made it.

This is why we throw away bic pens but people collect and restore fountain pens. Why boring econoboxes get junked when they're old, but interesting vintage cars get preserved and restored. Why people throw away their modern cartridge razor but restore 100 year old straight razors. Why the garbage you buy at Ikea gets thrown out but Amish furniture gets passed down in families.

It is the appreciation for the workmanship done by other people and its products that makes us instinctively value finely crafted objects over mass produced lowest common denominator garbage, destined to end up tossed into the garbage as thoughtlessly as it was made when it outlives its usefulness.

>>
>>60227376
no, you child. pens are not "for collecting". people who write use fountain pens because they're less fatiguing, you get more legible writing, and if you buy bulk ink, like the they're actually cheaper in the long run than disposable pens. not because MUH SOUL. some historical pens are appreciated more for their performance qualities, such as certain vintage waterman flex nibs. but they are cheap, because who the fuck wants a leaky old hard rubber shitpen? there is a reason people are willing to pay an arm and a leg for modern shit like sailor specialty nibs, it's because NEW STUFF IS BETTER. I wouldn't expect you to know that though, since pens and paper are considered a curious historical relic by today's twitter-addled tweens

What a fucking moron.

1. Fountain pens
Fountain pens and even old fountain pens allow YOU, the user, to be more expressive hence the use of 'soul' may be justified.

2. Econ boxes
Shithead, do you see old, unsafe gas guzzlers being manufactured today? They are only being RESTORED by another group of 'passionate' morons who think those old cars look cool and have soul despite a critical lack of safety features.

3. Razors
Straight edge razors are actually better than the gillette plastic shit and are also more economical and environment friendly. Try using one and slit your throat while you are at it and liberate your 'soul'.

pretty much. Even the chinese can shit out quality movements en-masse which the mountain jews proclaim to be 'haute whorology' and require 'craftsmanship'.

How difficult is it to run an assembly line of cnc machines?
>>
>>60227709
Some caveats that need to be noted:
A lot of classic sports cars actually do have a lot more character, although this is partly due to modern safety regulations basically requiring really ugly/shitty designs. Engineers don't have a
lot of wiggle room.

Safety razors are better, but the /wt/ mechfag equivalent are those people on Reddit who get all autistic about it and buy 10 different razors for no real reason and who spend $120 on something that is objectively worth maybe 20 or 30 on the market when you consider materials and finishing, and then they buy into a bunch of meme soap and brush bullshit, etc. This is the real issue here—beyond a certain point it's just autism and arbitrary snobbery, not "soulfulness" or anything of the sort.

>Econ boxes
This is also kind of a non-point as there "luxury" cars I'd say are basically econoboxes in their own right. A Honda Civic is kind of like a Casio but your boring ass and technologically inferior Rolex isn't the equivalent of a Rolls Royce and no amount of jerking yourself off will change that.
>>
>>60227785
>pretty much. Even the chinese can shit out quality movements en-masse
I agree with you for the most part but not with this. Chinese movements are pretty bad. Most of my Chinese quartzes lose 10-20 minutes a month and the mechs I've tried are okay but I don't expect them to last more than a couple of years. The Chinese really do need Europeans to force QC on them.
