a quartz on the bad end of average is much better than a mechanical on the higher end of average. Quartz is an objectively superior technology, like CRT. The reason people use other things is the same: they're stupid and susceptible to marketing

It's fair. Condition looks good but it's not a linen dial so ~$400 is about market rate. Be aware the 5740C does not back, but is otherwise probably Suwa Seikosha's best movement design.

he probably meant hack, not back. a hacking movement means the seconds hand stop setting the time.
also linen is a type of cloth, the texture of some dials looks like linen.

There's a kickstarter by Werenbach for watches made from spent rocket stages:

I'm slightly torn on getting one. The watch itself seems pretty cool but I've been burned by kickstarters not delivering before.

Yeah, what >>60197823 said. I meant it doesn't hack, as in the second hand does not stop when you pull out the crown to set the time.

The Lord Marvel hi-beat was made with plain silver dials and with linen textured dials like pic related (ignore the Arabic numerals, as both dial variants were made with both batons and arabic numerals). The linen dialed versions typically sell for quite a bit more money than the plain dial versions.

Just did a search, threads about it on WUS where Jörg himself refuses to say where the cases are from, but that 80% of the value (commonly defined as the sales price) is created in Germany.

It's a fair guess that most parts are imported, and only the finishing and assembly is done in Germany. Sad.

It's funny how the wrist hugging, square case thing was such a meme back in the day.
Seems like every fucking watch, say, hamilton made back then was rectangular.

Shit their lauded 770 movement, the "greatest american made movement ever" was made to fit squarish cases.

And yet, when I see a modern reverso or tank I just don't give a shit.

That's a nice gruen tho. I imagine some guy at the time getting his first raise at a top job; he goes on down to the jewelry store and sees this futuristic gold gruen that curves with his wrist. Gee Golly!
He's gonna buy himself some of that, and maybe that cute typist blonde on the 22nd floor would finally notice him!

Then WW2. He gets killed by some japs, and his grieving buddy keeps the curvex curved in the s-bend of his anus for 2 years before getting home.

Watch finally ends up on some faggot autist's wrist as he types bullshit on a indonesian shadow puppetry appreciation totempole.

Omega use a heavily modified version of what once was the 2892A2, yes.
Chronometer spec movements meet COSC requirements, whereas TOP run at +/-4s/day, with the 2892 being thinner than a 2824, with a longer power reserve.
>>
>>60199407
>How much more is an ETA 2892A2 chronometer vs. a 2824 Top, for example?
I'd imagine quite a bit more, as that shit's got to be packed up, send to COSC (lmao) and then tested and then return shipped and them cased and sent to your rank ass.

>(doesn't Omega use the 2892A2 in some Seamasters?)
They used the calibre 1120, which is just the above modified aesthetically and with 2 extra jewels somewhere. They were always chronometer grade.

So boring.
And they couldn't even get the fucking date window the same color as the dial. That smacks of cost cutting laziness where there shouldn't be penny pinching.

The 5196 with the small seconds is infinitely better looking, but again they recycled a tiny weensy movement because they were too lazy and cheap to make something that actually filled the case
>that spacer
lol
At least Lange design new movements commensurate with their new case sizes. Patek is resting on its fucking laurels.
>>
>>60197842
They couldn't be assed to get a Russian movement and the "spaceborn" material never even left the atmosphere. If you must get one on Kickstart error discount because that's the only time they would be marginally worth it, because they are cool looking but are generic in every other regard.

Mido gets a bad rap (that faggy pyramid chart that gets spammed here) or is just ignored. Guess it's coz they're just not in the US market. They're low on the swatch group ladder but have a defined and unique aesthetic unlike the utter blandness of tissot.

Cheaper than that pahjeet bait, Longines. Use a cork waterproofing system they came up with like 80 years ago for shits and giggles. Used to be that the Mido commander was the cheapest certified chronometer you could get.

Theyre cheap "swiss made" (like all the others below rolex) but decent enough.

Just not worth bothering with a 5513 without the matt dial and non white gold indices. Besides, getting them serviced is no longer possible at the official RSC; have to rely on some independent that must be found in the first place and then actually be trustworthy and competent.

I want some good ones and not the shitty chinese ones (I have on from a Parnis and it's pretty shit), though when looking on non-chinese watch accessories sites, the clasps they have looks the same as the chinese ones, only for 4x times the price so I'm a bit lost here... So, ignoring the trolls: I recently came across a post on a forum where a guy explained how he used an Omega style deployment clasp on a perlon, and I thought the idea was neat since I figured it would help reduce the tendency of the watch-head to shift too easily on the thin and flexible strap.

So far, I have to say I'm very happy with how this worked out. It's much more stable on the wrist than it was before I put the deployment clasp on it.

This is the forum post I got the idea from: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/perloyant-k-necessity-mother-invention-2684258.html#/topics/2684258?page=1

The watch has oil in it instead of air. Greatly reduces inner glare, and also supposedly makes the watch more water resistent.

This POS passed WR testing. Even if it's forty years old I'll probably take it in surface water, if the seals or a springbar fails who cares, the only diver more disposable than an Amphibia is an old Amphibia.

>>
>>60210391
At the jewelry store, of course. The place next to where he got the nice skirt and blouse to match his jewelry.
>>
>>60210435
Truth is I cheated a bit and treated the gaskets with silicone. Commies just left it dry (the Amphibia is designed this way). But even if the gasket wasn't good I wouldn't be surprised if new ones fit, even if this is an old manual wind 22 caliber Vostok and not a new 24 caliber automatic.
>>
>>60210521
Considering that standard practice with Western watches is to replace the gaskets with new ones every time the case is opened, it's still absurd that a beat up vintage Amphibia did that with its original gaskets, greased or not.
>>
>>60210559
The Amphibia gasket and caseback design is literally superior to the Western solution. The gasket does not require replacement until it completely dries out and becomes brittle, which considering the sheer thickness of material takes a long fucking time.

But normal gaskets don't really need replacing at every opening either, it's just a policy manufacturers put in place to cover their asses. Making ten thousand gaskets once in a while and replacing them in every watch that comes in to the service center is still cheaper than an occasional warranty repair/replace of a water damaged watch.

It gets retarded when manufacturers like Omega start replacing components in the movement as a standard policy, because some parts are literally timebombs that fail after a few years.
>>
>>60210661
if the gasket design is superior to the western solution, why do Western watch companies still use the Western design?
>>
>>60209876

Forgot pic. It looks like a gasket from a coffee brewer.

>>60210675
I've seen it in some vintage watches, I have a Swiss alarm watch with the same design. Not sure why it fell out of favor.
>>
>>60210702
I'm a bit surprised how small the movement is in that case. Guess it's a lot easier to fit the gasket when you have that much room.
>>
>>60210661
Oh, I'm aware that normal gaskets don't actually need to be replaced every time the case is opened, moreso I just meant that literally no one would expect the original gaskets on a watch as old as that Amphiba to still be useable.

As for Omega, well that's what happens when you are determined to adopt the co-axial escapement on a production basis for marketing purposes no matter how bad an idea it actually is, or how much it turns your movements into finicky, fragile time bombs.

That whole fiasco is a great example of how the intrinsic character of an organization shines through in everything they do. The Swatch Group is simply constitutionally incapable of doing anything that isn't an insult to horology even when they try, because they are organizationally incapable of not being mean, petty, venal, greedy and anti-customer.
>>
>>60210391
I bought it off eBay after searching for "20mm omega deplyment" and setting the search to North America only (for the faster shipping).

You may want to do some googling on those Omega style deployments as there are a fair number of reviews of various sellers around. Be aware that for using them with a leather strap you need Omega style leather straps which have a much longer buckle side than normal.
>>
>>60207729
A granite bracelet would be pretty awesome. Wonder how hard it would be to make?
>>
>>60210791
Do you usually need a longer strap, or is that something unique to Omega?

There's tons and tons of shit all around you that keeps "accurate" time.

I also have tons of shit with electronics and batteries in them. A lot of it is shit that I HAVE to use for work.

I want this one thing on my wrist to have more personality than that.

The functionality is good enough for my day to day.
If you have trains to catch on the regular, that's another matter.

Drilling holes for pins in it would be the main issue.
As for cutting its not hard since there are saws with cable and diamond coating on them that can do extremely precise pieces like they do for machine shops.
Unless there is another system in place for linking all the things together.

>A granite bracelet would be pretty awesome. Wonder how hard it would be to make?

It would be a fucking bitch to machine, and when you made it that thin and started drilling holes in it you're going to make it prone to shattering if it's dropped, which is going to make a lot of retards filing angry reviews online when they drop it on concrete.
>>
>>60210728
That's a 2409, a 24mm movement. The Seiko 7S26 for example is 27mm, so it's not really that small. When you have 40mm cases as a norm, movements will have some form of spacers.
>>

That's always been the conundrum with Citizen. They are capable of making excellent quality watches, but their design department is literally one of the worst in the industry. They just seem totally incapable of comprehending watch design traditions and so absolutely every watch they come up with ends up mallcore as fuck.

What's even worse is that they infect other watch companies they buy with the same disease, like Bulova. Now that they've purchased Frederique Constant/Alpina you can expect them to become mallcore as fuck too, unless Citizen finally has the good sense to keep their hands off.

so... you accept the fact that you are wearing/buying a watch because it's pretty, like say... a piece of jewelry?

what are you, a woman/tranny?

also, craftsmanship argument is not really valid because the level of technology that goes into quartz watches requires a much higher level of expertise and manpower and technology.

There is a reason you don't find workshops or one man teams making a quartz clock from scratch.

get photon power if you must have a watch, like pic related.
>>
>>60210898
no wonder bulova looks like mallcore shit, now I know why I thought the two were similar
>>
>>60211133
nobody makes quartz timepieces from scratch because they can buy a quartz movement for 2 dollars and drop it into a case
