This is not necessarily a bad thing. Adblocking proves that most people don't care about the content they're consuming. In other words, most websites have no reason to exist and are redundant. Let the internet kill most of itself off. A good spring cleaning is certainly not unnecessary.
>>
>>60150380
What websites do you pay to use? This one?

The Internet had plenty of variety long before ads

Now are you stealing from content creators, or is the adblock actually spyware stealing from you and selling your credit card information?

>>
the real solution to the internet problems is cooperative hosting. people who are interested in a website can help host it on their machines/network (like sadpanda does). if there aren't enough (technology literate) people interested, they have to pay or it dies. it's just that simple

ads, as they exist today, come from a different time when people had no control over the content being presented to them (tv, radio)
>>
i only connect to ip's of domains i trust, so i use adblock and noscript to prevent connections i dont trust.
when i want to support a content creator, then i donate. but that never happens

As soon as ad networks stop serving malware I'll allow non-intrusive ads. Until then fuck off.

>On arrival, like a growing number of websites, Forbes asked readers to turn off ad blockers in order to view the article. After doing so, visitors were immediately served with pop-under malware, primed to infect their computers, and likely silently steal passwords, personal data and banking information.

https://arstechnica.com/security/2016/03/big-name-sites-hit-by-rash-of-malicious-ads-spreading-crypto-ransomware/
>Mainstream websites, including those published by The New York Times, the BBC, MSN, and AOL, are falling victim to a new rash of malicious ads that attempt to surreptitiously install crypto ransomware and other malware on the computers of unsuspecting visitors, security firms warned.
>>
>>60150707
Sharing widgets was an example. I also block stuff like comments section, recommended sidebar and description on YT and a lot of other custom filters which block different page elements, even here on 4chan.

>>

>>
>>60150857
So your belief is that literally everything but Spotify and 4chan have a flawed income mechanism?

Also kind of funny that you don't find Spotify flawed. Their financials aren't the best and they don't pay artists anything.
>>
>>60150866
don't use that as an argument on a site full of self-entitled antisocial sperglords.
>>
>>60150826
>I'm sure you know exactly how it works
Ad networks let the ads serve javascript for some dumb fuck reason. Javascript vulnerabilities (and there's a lot because it's shit) allow malicious code to execute outside whatever browser sandbox it's supposed to be in. Boom, attack vector open, drop a skiddy payload through.
>>
>>60150893
Yeah but it's just javascript. It can't execute machine code or touch your files, can it?
>>
>>60150260
Who wouldn't steal from a sweater-wearing, glasses-wielding, hipster faggot?
>>
>>60150916
Yes, it can. In the ArsTechnica article posted a bit up, malicious ads exploited a javascript vulnerability to install Cryptolocker. A full honest to god ransomware kit. From a drive by ad, without clicking it.
>>
>>60150260
>users steal stealers
I don't see any problems
>>
>>60150941
Oh.

So I guess the risk is really when a security vulnerability is found, which can happen at any random moment, but isn't really constant.
>>
I use adblock because most website have horseshit ads that automatically play blaring loud audio, take up your entire screen, inject malware, etc. When websites stop doing this, I'll consider removing my adblocker.
>>
Been using adblocks for more than a decade now. Give me a good reason to suddenly stop using it.
>>
>>60150982
Yes, with the exception of zero day exploits. Zero days (an exploit that isn't known to any security researcher and hasn't been patched) can appear at any time and are generally how drive-by ad malware is able to infect hundreds of thousands at once.

pic related is a screenshot from moments ago. reddit literally makes money without ads.

if you want to make money, don't rely on ads controlled by a third party. you could always get a sponsor (they won't get blocked automatically), sell merchandise, beg for donations, offer services.

ads are still strong on mobiles. majority of users will prefer to use the app version of a website, and therefore won't be able to block ads.

No ads truly is the most comfy way of browsing, you're in control and not constantly hassled by ads based off your browsing habits.

We're bombarded with ads every time I leave the house, drive my car or walk through the CBD, Not wanting ads in your home is a reasonable desire by any measure and not watching free to air TV and using adblockers is the way to do it.

Post your comfy ad-free feels anons!

The only acceptable advertisements are a small box on the bottom of the page with the title "Sponsors" and a list of sponsors.
If they want it in video form, they should have the reader introduce the segment by saying that they are a sponsor, then say the message and then move on.
Pre arranged clips from sponsors is not acceptable, nor is automatically generated messages based on the identity of the viewer.

If someone can't sell their products with these restrictions, they shouldn't be on the market.

A lot of websites only get traffic when people need them. When they search for something. Those websites cant mooch off a community or wait for someone to unblock them, because nobody will.

I think the malware and privacy complaints are justified. But experience learns that adblockers also block self hosted and non-tracking ads when possible. Which kind of kills the whole argument.

I always find it hilarious when people say they will disable their ad lockers on sites that don't have "disruptive" ads.
