I can't connect to my server running mpd using MPDroid. These are the iptables rules I have:
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8000 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --sport 8000 -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 6600 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --sport 6600 -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

Using telnet I get the following:
On port 6600 I get connection refused.
On port 8000 I am connected before the connection is abruptly closed by foreign host.

What am I missing?

Added a second SSD to my laptop. Battery life cut in half. How can I fix this problem short of removing the new SSD?

I've installed powertop but I don't know what to do with it and if that would even help things
>>
>>60137216
Is it mlc? some manufacturing methods take up A LOT of electricity iirc
>>
>>60137279
Yes it's MLC. Am I fucked?
>>
whats the most extreme way to go about blocking ads within windows
>>
>>60137310
Hmm, no, MLC doesn't take up a lot more electricity.

How old is your battery? How many mAh?

Keep in mind, SSDs idle less than a watt. Range from 1-5 Watts, higher end if you're constantly reading/writing.
>>
>>60137368
Use ad block plus [yes, ad block plus, nothing else. There's something else that looks exactly like it, it needs to be from https://adblockplus.org/ ]

If you want to go more extreme, add a list of ad domains to your hosts file. You should be able to find these no problem on google.
>>
>>60137420
>>60137368
Oh, forgot to say, some people prefer uBlock and say it takes up less ram. Never used though.

What's the cheapest GPU I can get that can output to 3 monitors? Searching around, it looks like three connections doesn't equal 3 outputs. Graphics performance doesn't matter at all, so as long as it can do 3 monitors I just want something cheap.
>>
>>60137403
The laptop and battery are less than 6 months old. 4,866 mAh, 37 Wh battery. It has to be the addition of the SSD but maybe something auxiliary to it. My main os is Ubuntu and the secondary one is Windows. I've heard that Windows doesn't play well being the secondary drive (UEFI by the way). Not sure if that's related. For what it's worth within Ubuntu I can access my Window's file system.
>>
>>60137488
GTX 1050 Ti. Cheapest one you'll be happy with imo. $120-150 on eBay.
>>
>>60137492
Does the power consumption issue happen on both windows and linux? If so, it's probably the SSD itself.

okcupid doesnt require it

unless you mean "hookup" apps, which idk any popular ones besides tinder which uses it but obviously you can just make a fake one
>>
>>60137585
Yes, set it up with Samba/SMB and use it as a network drive.

>>60137594
Ehhh, if you REALLY wanted to go that route sure. You could have 4GB ram and play games in 4k or 144Hz 1080p for an extra $80. And it sure as hell won't bog down with 3 monitors.
>>

I have a network switch in my room connected to the router downstairs to give have my main rig hard wired.

I'm setting up a little TV area in my office and I want to connect a roku to the TV which will need to connect via wifi.

The wifi is pretty shit up here, so I'd like to strengthen it. Ideally I want something that I can hookup with a patch cable to, that will take that wire and make it a wifi access point.

Is there something like this? What are my options?

I'm bad with networking.

Dual boot is the best solution.

If you have an HDD upgrade to solid state.

Or alternatively, get a mid grade lap top to run linux for basic tasks like internet browsing, and keep your main rig windows for gaming and other heavy duty tasks.
>>
>>60139061
>Dual boot is the best solution.
Feels nice to have a button you can press and go straight to windows without having to restart though.
GPU passthrough still remains as something enthusiasts do, the learning curve which involves having the right hardware and READING keeps out deadbeat dumbass retards.

My PC has been randomly freezing up lately. Don't know what might be causing it.

It just completely freezes in place, but if I'm playing a youtube video on the background, it keeps playing it, although really fucking slow as if playing it at 0.10 speed. Yet the system is still frozen until I hard reset it.

Is it the CPU? I tried dusting the heatsink and freezes are still happening. Maybe the GPU? I'm running the OS on an SSD, so I doubt it's that.

I fried the audio on my mobo through my headphones with static. Can I use a USB DAC as a replacement or do I need a PCI sound card?
>>
>>60139210
yes

either is good anon, it just depends on what you want to use it for other than your headphones
>>
>>60139146
Ive done a lot of research on comp building the past two months and ive seen benchmarks for video rendering that go all over the place with a bunch of different comps. You're really only going to see massive speed increases on professional workstation grade stuff most consumer grade processors being I5/R5 and above will only vary a little from one another. It's really a question of whether you multitask a ton or are single minded with things on whether you want an Intel or AMD.

Two/three years ago people were convinced that processor you picked was especially fast for rendering but strangely consistently amd shit that was 200 dollars cheaper was almost always about 2 minutes behind at most. The reality is clock speeds and threads aren't helping video rendering as much as people once thought. I'm saying this though when the newest processors from both companies haven't been out long and video rendering/other benchmarks haven't really shown a clear winner with work related tasks.

Dualcores died out and quadcores became the industry standard soon after.

>>60139707
Education is good, but it's designed for a different puropse. LTBS is intended for fancy embedded devices and it ditches features so that updates would be smaller and less regular.

If all you want is a good version of windows for day-to-day use then you should use Edu. You can uninstall or disable most of the bloat on it.

>>60139630
If you only cared about single-threaded performance, you should be looking into getting a pentium or i3 7350k anyway.

You might argue that 4 core with SMT is all you need for muh gaymes, but then you can just get R5 1500x or 1600 and save a bunch of money that would be better spent on getting a better GPU or SSD or whatever. Pretty much the only reason to get an i7 is if you absolutely must have the best gaming performance and don't care about the money or upgradability, for pretty much everything else Ryzen r5 or r7 offers better value, better performance or both.

also, is it possible to move the bookmarks bar to the bottom of the browser without ctr?

i'm asking because i'm preparing my butt for v57, when ctr will stop working. i would like to keep my current layout.

the new compact themes are ok, but i liked my own userscript better. however my script relies heavily on ctr and completely breaks without it. i'm not good at css, i'd love to see some of your layouts if you're willing to share. the less wasted space the better. i'm intending to use firefox on a laptop where vertical space is limited.

A dead pixel showed up on the bottom of my laptop LCD display and it started to spread slowly (bunch of other dead pixels started showing next to it one after another) to the point there's now a black spot (with some shades of transparent green) on my screen that has a radius of about half an inch. The same thing started happening at the top of my screen (in a rather horizontal pattern) and in two spots on the left of my screen.
I'm not intending to fix it or anything, because I know It's probably fubar.
I'm just really curious what happened and what caused it.
There was no external physical interference done to the screen (I'm rather cautious with my laptop, it sits mainly in one place)

No GPU or SSD.
430Watt PSU might be the absolute bare minimum.
A Z270 Motherboard when the CPU isn't even unlocked.

For heavy work I'd get a Ryzen 1700 to profit from all the cores.
For games this lacks a GPU.

The SSD maybe in the future. I only need the machine to work at this level.

Z270 because I can upgrade later, if needed.

The most common means of identifying people are looking at their add-ons and the user-agent. But if someone REALLY cares about knowing who you are, it's pretty much impossible to make yourself look so generic that you can't be uniquely identified by any means. The goal here is to remove the low-hanging fruit, not to fool state of the art systems.

It's not the CPU.

A modern CPU just slows down, and that's all if it reaches thermal headroom.
If there is no voltage, or shit connection whatever, it won't even boot.

RAM causes crashes, or usually BSOD.
Not freeze though.

SSD? Don't think so again, because the system would not just slow down.
I would still do the driver update trouble (look I am a 100% skeptic and I had similar troubles on my laptop since Windows 10. I did this update fuckery like 3 times when these freezes came up, and it fixed them always.) Like Windows 10 needs new drivers (due to the often updates), BUT it does not deliver them via Windows Update.

But if that will not fix it, I would say... PSU? Motherboard maybe?
But even a wifi/network card can cause something like this.

AND now I remember!
Visit your Power Options ,edit your plan, and check "PCI Express". Turn off "Link state power management".
Check around and see if you find other fuckery shit in there.

This might be your solution.

Well, as long as it isn't the CPU, I'm fine.

The freeze isn't just a slowdown. It's literal freeze. Cursor stops moving, keyboard doesn't respond, etc. Though the music is still playing.

If PSU is the issue, I can get it replaced. Though I don't know exactly how is it that a PSU causes freezing in the first place. Shouldn't it just power off the entire thing if shit starts going awry?

Does the Blender "constant work" (where you just sit and wait for it to finish) eats up most of his time?

I doubt it. I used Blender (for map making and fun), and yeah there are tasks that need you to wait, but you mostly just work. This is like a software developer crying "it's compiling", yet that's the last thing you do / least amount of time.

KDZ is LG's stock image. There is this korean tool, you put the phone to download mode and flash it.
Of course this would make you go back to stock.
It helped in my case, but it may have been special.

Btw your issue sounds like my friend's.
Ordered him like 2 chink batteries.
He had similar reboots and whatnot with the original Samsung battery.

The new replacement fixed it... then it happened again.
And again with the other one.

Moral of the story, just buy the original battery.
I bought an OEM battery, sealed and whatnot for my HTC M7 to replace the battery - and guess what...
It was dead on arrival.

After wasting my day replacing the battery, it would not take a charge.
Putting back my old one - it charged immediately.

I live in an apartment complex with cat 5 ports in the wall. the router is used to separate your network from the others.
without it you're directly connected to the houses network and to everyone else. so they can easily reach your computer through it instead of being blocked by the router.

>If we pretend that cost doesn't matter, do we even have technology to make batteries that can store massive charges in the same form factor as existing lithium batteries?

Massive? No.. More? Yes, a lot more, almost double sometimes.

1.5 times the capacity, faster charging, no risk of blowing up when punctured.

The technology is there, it's cheaper, safer. Why we haven't adopted it yet is beyond me. Lithium ion batteries are a multi million dollar market though.

I keep hearing about these batteries that use algaes, or just salt water. The one that I have seen in real life is the one where it doesn't explode when punctured.

Raid card gets it, and says "into the trash".

FIVE YEARS OF NO TRIM, let that sink in.

The drives after very heavy use (I never cared about not using hibernation, where to put downloads, where to torrent, I dont care.)....

Is there a way I can set up a ~10gb partition on my hdd and tell gparted to flag it as read only so when I use an ubuntu auto-installer, it installs "around" the partition and sets up the swap, boot, main partitions around it all?

I really really hate manually creating partitions for a new installation
