Since I apparently posted in a dead thread, gonna ask again.

Should I trade my Asus Eee PC 1201HA with broken keyboard and a terribly repaired charger for a beaten up Thinkpad X41 with no stylus, battery and a charger?

On one side, X41 is super outdated (Pentium M), comes with basic Intel graphic accelerator, non-expandable RAM over 2GBs and is probably gonna burst into flames if I try to watch a HD video on it.

But on the other side, it's a thinkpad, I can use a wacom stylus with it, and the Eee PC has terrible Linux support because of Nvidia Ion graphics

Is there like a secret club out there where you get much better deals for Thinkpads? Like a wholesaler warehouse or some shit. I feel like a pleb looking for public torrents, here.
>>
>>60131810
No, but you have to know how to search.

My favorite thing to look for is ThinkPads with no hard drives, or with really shitty displays/processors, because normies aren't willing to swap anything out and some are even too lazy to just put in a hard drive.

If you aren't willing to mod or repair/replace parts in one, you're SoL normie.
>>
>>60131810
I've always bought my thinkpads from ebay.
You don't have to buy the first one you see, look for a good price.
>>
>>60131810
Either eBay, Craigslist or of you work at a office you might be lucky and be able to sneak out an old ThinkPad/Latitude/EliteBook/whatever from a pile in the back or something.

A friend of mine found his T61p while he was dumping the trash. Cleaned it, booted it and called it a day. Works wonders for him, too.

You just have to be patient, and when you see a good deal, lunge towards it. It's like a sport in itself, and sometimes you just need a bit of luck.

They're literally superior towars chinkpads.
Daily reminder:
HP 2560p >>>>> x220
HP 2570p >>>>> x230
>both are 12,5"
>both support socketed quad core CPUs
>both got additional DVD bay which can be used to mount 2nd 2,5" drive without sacrificing WWAN port
>both support thinkpad trackpoint sticks
>both are cheaper, better build (metal palmrest, metal screen case)
>100Wh 9cell battery options
>>
>>60131929
probooks and elitebooks allows you to access all removable components via single switch (and screw, if it's secured).
If you need to access something more then indeed you have to unscrew hex screws. So the fuck what? You know you can just use a flat driver for this, right?

pavilions are cancer-tier shit. Anyone who buys one deserves whatever happens to it.

Really concerned, whether or not I should call my Thinkpad-project off. Everything is fucking costly and makes no fucking sense perfomance wise. It would be easier just use the quantity over quality and buy bunch of cheap shitty computers than even bothering to upgrade a thinkpad.

>>
>>60131810
Use the lookup tools and wiki in OP and you can gain a significant knowledge advantage over other bidders and sellers. The less a seller knows about a machine, the lower the price and the less interest there'll be. I pulled a 1600x1200 IPS T60p in mint condition for $80 because the seller didn't know what the resolution was, but simply by virtue of being a 15" T60p I knew it had to be at least 1400x1050 IPS, and that was a damn good price even if it turned out to be the lower resolution. Knowledge is the key to good deals.

For basic to moderately demanding activities, the 1st Gen of Core iX and the Core 2 Duo/Quad are still going.
Besides, if you use either loonix or WinXP or lower you get as most performance out of them as you can.

Still, it's nice to have a slightly newer model, I give you that.

/tpg/ is not comprised purely of people looking for cheap but good laptops. There are plenty of cultists around who are interested in older machines for various niche reasons.

Elitebooks are valid alternatives to Thinkpads for the former group. They don't really have much appeal for the latter, and the consistently arrogant behavior of Elitebook fans here doesn't really do them any favors. The Dell guys I've seen in this general have mostly been agreeable, respectful people despite differing tastes, so why do you have to post in such an aggressive manner? It's really not necessary and just incites more aggressive, lower quality replies. Nobody wants to see a couple of faggots shitposting cherrypicked collages complete with meme frogs back and forth.

>>60137191
Okay maybe usable isn't that great of a term. The i7 model benches about half what current gen ULVs do. 16:10 is pretty fucked and doesn't exist post 2010. Some guys over at 51nb (chink forums) had custom broadwell boards for the X61 [16:10] (which is even older, but the point was they completely refreshed it to 5th gen i7!), but that was a one time deal and they likely won't do it again.

I highly agree. I worked part time in a government office and all I could see were ThinkPads, ProBooks, EliteBooks and Latitudes. There was this time when a T420 fell from the second floor and the only damage it received was a broken bezel.

Another time around, someone put one of those big Lexmark printers on top of a EliteBook 8460p. They are strongly built.

But what still haunts me to this day is this particular ProBook brought to us one day, that had a part of the frame shattered and the palm rest bent up. Beats me how it ended up like that in the first place.

>>
>>60139009
>ProBook
Probooks are the E-series of enterprise HPs. Stay away. Tried to do a straight-up comparison of my own Elitebook and my parents' Probook some months ago. By itself the Probook stood out as way above-average in terms of build quality and feel but with an Elitebook next to it the difference was obvious really.

On a different note: converted by brother-in-law to get a X220/30 or similar and gifted a Elitebook 8560p to a friend. I feel like a goddamn Jehovah's Witness preaching the word of out lord, enterprise laptops.

But he's right, you know?
There is no point in RAIDing internal SSDs in x220/x230, because the msata port is limited to 3Gbps. RAID0 of 6Gbps and 3Gbps port gives you 6Gbps speeds in total. The entire point of raiding 2x6Gbps SSDs in 2570p is to get 1.2GBps read/write speeds, which is close to standard in 2017.

Otherwise:

Budget: €150-250
Location: Ireland
Size: 12" (x220/x230)

honestly, i don't think fhd is really worth it unless you're a real tp dorklord enthusiast. an x220, while a great value, is still a 5 y/o, $150ish laptop. consider the price of the adapter (if you can find one), panel, time spent on hacking up the internals, soldering, risk of unfixable damage. can that effort be spent on improving your experience in a different way, like just plugging it into a monitor at home/work and living with a middling resolution on the road?

kill yourself. t430 with quad core cpu throttles during full load, and unless you've added additional copper layers to the heatsink and the heatpipe it's still going to throttle, especially during gayming (since the iGPU produces heat too)

it's not sanded, it's cut. You can clearly see it's cut on the right bottom side.
And even if it's sanded then you sanded it too much, so the keyboard pops up from the palmrest.
>2133MHz
post proof. Currently there are no DDR3L 2133MHz CL13 sticks on the market, and if you get CL13> ones memory will run at either 1866MHz or 1600MHz. I'm waiting fuccboi.

Some of the cables in HP Elitebooks that connect to the motherboard seem a bit fragile... I remember removing an 8740w for the first time and I almost botched indicator lights cable.
Some of the ribbon cables have annoying interconnects too, those can break if you pull them too hard.

I actually have once for a good 10 minutes in college. It's good stuff, but it doesn't compare to a thinkpad, at least to the pre **40 ones, and the P series. The trackpoint is about a tenth as comfortable to use as any thinkpad's. Some don't even have middle buttons for comfortable scrolling. I'll concur that HP's business machines are probably very usable compared to the consumer-marketed crap that dominates the laptop market, but that's not to say much.
>>
>>60147991
>The trackpoint is about a tenth as comfortable to use as any thinkpad's
that's because you're using the shitty HP stick, which is removable and you can use the thinkpad's one.
After that there is no difference between this and thinkpad's

Someone please tell me where can I send my laptop to get it fixed? It's a thinkpads t410i; out of warranty I think since I've had it for 7 years. The problem is the laptop overheating constantly and can't even stay on for a while. The dust is clogged everything to the point where I can't fix it, and I'm afraid the heat sink could've been affected

Does the company fix these laptops if you're willing to pay? I'm really desperate and need help

Haven't had one yet, but from what you are writing, it sounds like the best E6xxx series.
The E6420 and E6430 downfalls are no mSATA port and limited to 900p displays.

However, unlike the T420 and T430 it only has one single side for CPU and GPU cooling. As a matter of fact, quadcore i7 E6420's were outfitted with a single pipe in the heatsink, and a lot of them suffered from overheating.
Eventually this would be fixed, still a bit sketch.

At least it has HDMI out for the cunts who can't buy an adapter.

Going to uni in the fall.

I was initially interested in an older thinkpad like most of you guys recommend.

Well, I sold my car, and my mom is giving me hers, so I have a few grand excess now.

What would you guys pick for a nice laptop around $2,000? Could be less.

Will be programming, running VM's, etc..

I've read on here that all new thinkpads are shit. What would be a good modern laptop that's medium-high end?

And no i'm not falling for the apple meme

Hey guys, does the t420 have a empty m.2 slot? I wanted to put and ssd this way, otherwise, how do i substitute the cd tray with the sata drive, and install a ssd on the normal hd tray?
>>
>>60153832
T420 doesn't have m.2. It does have mSATA, if you haven't bought your SSD yet.

You can get an Ultrabay HDD caddy for ~$10 on ebay. There's a lever on the bottom of the system to eject the disc drive.
>>
>>60153827
New thinkpad's aren't shit. If you grew used to old thinkpads, you do feel the difference, otherwise, you would be getting a worse machine overall.

You have some money, give the t460 or the t470 a look.

Here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CO42TIA/ref=psdc_13896615011_t3_B01CJNRC3S

A fine laptop, you can upgrade the ram with 2x 8gb, so your VM's run smoothly (He's capable of 32gb actually, but you don't need that.), and he have a empty m.2 slot, so you can put an ssd like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-256GB-MTS400-Solid-TS256GMTS400/dp/B00KLTPUG4

You can use the normal 500gb for general storage, and the ssd with your OS. Or maybe SSD with windowns and SATA with a linux distro, whatever.

Don't fall for the "new thinkpads are shit" meme.

They feel weird if you grew used to old thinkpads, but overall, they're the best machines for their price.
>>
>>60153923

Thanks for your honest opinion. I'll give the newer thinkpads a look!

A bit, but don't expect great things.
Quadro are meant for rendering videos and images and such (as far as I know), so gaming comes as a secondary focus.
If you intend on medium to heavy gaming, go for an eGPU, or if that isn't an option then go for a EliteBook with a Radeon HD or a T5x0 with a NVIDIA NVS.

He's got only 4gb ram, wich means no dual-channel. He is recording his screen, so you give him that too. I can see some hiccups in the framerate.

I believe without fraps recording, and at least an 2x 4gb ram dual channel, you could get an low-to-mid gaming on yout notebook. Wich is fine overall.

The 2200m doesn't seem to exist, but i believe if it does belong to the 2k series, his performance should be similar (If not superior) as seem in >>60154354
