I have no business being on this board, so I can't provide any context at all. But the W520 is a monster. I think it's the last Thinkpad with the oldschool keyboard besides he W700ds which is like, a holy grail.

If the T420 offers enough performance for you then it's really only added weight + 1080p screen for watching animu, or smol and lighter. But a 1080p W520 isn't guranteed, even if common.
>>
>>60157434
W520, no contest.

T420 screen is god awful, the worst out of all ThinkPads. This a bold statement and I'm sure other anons are eager to disprove me if I'm wrong.
>>
>>60157832
I don't think anyone has such a gigantic buyer's remorse to defend T420/T430 screen. It's absolute trash, and it should be illegal to advertise such shit as "premium lenovo screen"
>>
>>60157832
>>60157945
How does it compare to the W500's screen? Do you know? At least the 1920x1200 model.

It wasn't very bright. I had to max out the brightness to use it indoors, and it still wasn't bright.
>>
>>60157969
You are literally comparing the best budget ThinkPad screens to the worst.

The W500 series screens reproduces colors better than some modern ThinkPads. They're still tn so you need to tilt it accordingly to see the results. Still better than the t420 screens which will always have colorshift regardless of where you look at it.
>>
>>60158033
Thank you for the patient reply. And, I understand, now. I never really saw it that way, even though obviously when you give it thought the performance line will outperform the others...

yes, check all the stuff in the used buyers guide in the OP and use Common Sense 2017™ and make sure you're happy with its condition. Though it really comes down to if you really need it or just buying it as a /g/ meme

Is there anything wrong with this that I'm not seeing? The bid seems way too low.

Nigga no offense but I ain't reading that shit just to understand an out of context post by some arsehole on the internet. Like it's nice he broached the topic of ebay's non-intuitive rules, but that article's context being needed only affirms that his post fails to support itself.

Good luck ln the bidding though. Sorry for possible misinformation earlier. I assumed the last and highest $ bid always got the product.

Quick rundown on why to bid at the last second on eBay:

The practical effect SHOULD be the same, but the reality is different. Everyone has a set "max bid" in their minds, a number they don't want to exceed.

HOWEVER, when someone is outbid, their instinct (or stupidity) to be the winner kicks in, and they may choose to go past their previous "max bid" and hemorrhage money they would not have put up had you not bid.

By bidding at the last second, you give them no time to respond or think about upping their max bid. They wanted to pay $100 for an item, and at the last second you decided to put in your max bid of $101. If they weren't watching the item like a hawk at the time of the auction's end, they couldn't up their max bid.

The second effect is that a bidding war inflates the price. If they bid $100 while the item was $10, the item price becomes $11. When someone bids $20, the item jumps to $20. By bidding at the last second, you also remove the possibility of someone screwing you by simply guessing what your max price is, and bidding just below it to cause you to pay the highest possible price. If they want the item anyway, there is no risk to them.
>>
>>60160534
Someone should make a site where all bids are effectively hidden, and you don't know if you'll win until the auction ends. Seems like it would eliminate this issue.
>>
>>60160555
Not really how bidding works though, the bidwar is part of the fun for some people

>>
>>60160784
I got the full gen2 speeds on my gdc v8.4 on both an x220 and t420. My guess is stability can be affected by one or many things:
hw revision. more complaints about v7
adapter type. i'd trust expresscard over bare mpcie
laptop model. imagine the junk the people having problems might be using
psu quality. get a da-2, not some chink atx psu
card model. i bet a lot of 250w cards coupled with shit psus caused problems
was all the shit grounded properly? 100% sure?
actual electronic interference. i also have a pe4c and it'd get fucked up by my shitty 60s kenwood amp when i turned it on 5 ft away

the old egpu adapters were kind of a dark art to get running and i suspect people would jump to conclusions as to the exact reason why shit wouldn't work

so it's not a question easily answered. it will probably work, but life is full of shitty surprises

It seems legit enough. But when you consider that the battery (30$ or more) and charger (about 20$ brand new), you'll end up spending what a complete one would've been at anyways.

These are ok if you just need them for parts or if you already have the battery and charger. The HDD caddy and rubber is only about 5 dollars tho.

So I fucked up my keyboard a while back (somehow broke a few of the keyboard connectors on the actual laptop) and managed to jiggle it enough to get it into working order. Now it's fucked up again. Before, the top row didn't work/barely worked. Now, it looks like the whole keyboard doesn't work again, unless I hold down the esc and ~ key together, then the whole keyboard works except for 4, 5, and 6 as far as I can tell. None of this matters with my question, but I thought it was funny.
I was here a couple months ago with this issue If any of you remember me.

Question is, do any of you know what would be a good replacement I could put in place of the pins? It's smaller than the tip of any pins I have on hand, so I don't know how I could fix it without handing it off to someone with actual hardcore soldering supplies.

I would go for listings that are only for one single laptop, where you get a picture from every single possible angle so that you can make sure it isn't totally busted. Make sure it comes with a battery and charger. Even if it looks in good shape, expect the upper right hand corner of the display cover to be loose.

Might also try to avoid sellers that have two different listings for two laptops with the same specs. They can mix up their orders and send you the worst looking one of the two (happened to me). Dealing with that kind of stuff isn't fun.

Look at local auction and used items sites. You might find a good deal there as well (you'll also save on shipping and you can see it in person first if you buy from a local seller).

Alright guys, need some advice.

Long story short, I shorted out my T420s i7 motherboard. It couldn't tell when the AC adapter was plugged in. So I bought a super cheap not working i5 T420s. Bad display cable. Put the display from my old system on the i5 system and it seems to work alright.

Only problem is that the fan runs at high speed. It starts out normal, but once it ramps up it seems like it can't ramp back down. Just a constant 4k RPM all the time, even through a reboot. Only way to reset it is a complete shutdown.

All the temps look good, nothing overheating. The power and performance settings in BIOS/UEFI are set to battery optimized. I just updated the UEFI to the most recent, didn't help.

Any ideas? The display is the FHD mod, would that somehow cause the fan to go full speed?

Should I get a thinkpad yoga?
I
'm looking for a light tablet/laptop with ips and fhd display, also trackpoint.

AFAIK the first one had ghosting issues, is it fixable with a different panel? and can you mod a trackpad? it uses the clickpad I think.

Are there any other somewhat cheap business convertibles? x220t/x230t are not an option due to the low resolution display.

Is the thinkpad yoga 12 the succesor to the first yoga?

I kinda don't want to delve with the tablet market because it's close to the smartphone market which is extremely close to idiots selling, stealing and buying these who ask me for help.

I've tried reviewing the pixel but I've recorded myself 4 times and hate each one how it turns out.

2015 pixel is where it is at, better color somehow lol

When I plugged my X220 into a 1080p monitor, the screen was somewhat blurry - this was not the case with a T430 using the same monitor

is it that the HD3000 igpu in the X220 is not sufficient for that resolution? The screen blurriness was unaffected by having shut the native display off and only extending to the monitor.

I am not complaining or seeking a solution, I just want to know whether this is a matter of laptop size (if that even matters?) or if it is of hardware.

Would something like an x250/60/70 not have this problem given how drastic the jump in intel's igpu performance have been in the past few years?

Why is trackpoint scrolling really jerky on Windows?

Let me explain. I tried both Windows 8.1 and 7 on my X220 and scrolling on Chrome is fine, perhaps not the best. But scrolling on other windows is shite. As in, I can't really control whether I want to just scroll a bit or a lot, it just warps around. This doesn't happen on Linux, but I got a battery to keep alive.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/

And it displays the right Thinkpad, but clicking "Machine Info" only displays a four-character string. I hope I'm missing functionality cause I'm accessing the site on mobile, cause I expected anything more than OS, model, and four characters of no use to me...

Is there anything else?

I seriously can't make this work. So, partslookup page:
http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/partslookup

Inputting my "serial number" or "machine type" sends me to the same page as earlier, however the latter gives a confirmation prompt. There is a box below to input "part number". So I googled "lenovo thinkpad part number" and found this:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/How-to-find-part-number-for-a-machine/ta-p/656753

However, it's outdated. "Go to Lenovo Support Site, click Product & Parts Detail on the left panel of the page". No such thing exists there. But it seems really generic anyway since the answer only leads to the "Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM)". I wanted to extract the specific specs of a model from the info I find on the bios. Doesn't seem possible though.

Ok, /g/, a while ago I revived an old thinkpad that was given to my dad by the company he works for some years ago. It didn't even boot, and he was using a new one anyway.
The model is R51. I replaced the hdd, which was dead, and prevented it from booting. Now it has a 60gb ide one. I also disassembled it and replaced the cmos battery, which was dead as well. I bought a new battery and two 1GB sticks of ram, replacing the original 1x512MB. I did a fresh install of Windows XP, not the original one but a lightweight version.
Did I do good? Do you have any advice? Is it even a good model to begin with? I don't really know what to use it for, other than as a backup laptop in case my first laptop dies.
I was thinking of a dual boot. Maybe linux or W7 32bit. I found some drivers for the latter. What do you think?

Lubuntu was actually the first thing I put on it before downloading all the drivers for XP. I had to use an older version because it gave me an error with the newer ones. It was slow as fuck, but it still had the original meager ram. I'll probably try again with the improved ram.
I'm not touching W10. Not even in my first laptop, I'll stick with 7 until the end.
I'll probably go for Lubuntu/WinXP.
Yeah, it's shit, I figured as much. But it was there collecting dust, and now it works again, for all it's worth. I got the hdd for free, paid 10€ for the ram, 20€ for the battery, 1€ for the cmos battery and an hour or so of my time to fix everything. Could've been worse.

I bought a refurbished 1st gen X1 carbon 3 years ago and have been using it as my main laptop since then without any real problems. It only has a 128GB SSD in it so I've bought a 128GB SD card that I keep in it for more storage space, the 4GB of soldered RAM is kind of a bummer but I only run Linux (Arch with LXQt) on it these days so I don't really need any more than that.

If I had the chance to go back in time and do it over again I might purchase a x220 or x230 instead but I do like the larger screen on the X1 Carbon.

Could somebody recommend me a decent thinkpad, mainly for university but not limited to that. I am going for CompSci so I will mostly write code on it. On weekends it should at least be able to let me play a round of lol or wow (no hate plz)
What I am really looking for is a maximum of battery life, 12 hours text editing is a must. I really hate it to be bound to rooms or having the hassle to find a free plug.
I think I don't want to spend more than 350 on it, because if not included, i want to buy the bigger battery.
Used and refurbished are definitely an option, even though i'd love to be able to buy a new one.
I already read some reviews and some suggest the t440 or its relatives, 's' and 'p'. Are they any good? /tpg/ seems to like t470 quite a lot, is it better?
Additionally, I'm a eurofag, so can anyone suggest a place to buy a thinkpad where i can skip 20+$ delivery?
>>
>>60187989
euros get fucked no matter what. IMHO you would be best served by buying a ~$125 X220, a brand new battery from lenovo for about the same, and spend the last hundred on a large and reputable battery bank.
New models (**70) are upwards of $5-700.

Been looking at the buyers guide, and ive found 2 appealing options:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T420-i5-2-5GHz-4GB-120GB-SSD-NVIDIA-4200m-14-1600x900-Win-10-64-/142251122234?hash=item211ed3de3a:g:nPwAAOSwt5hYgXB8

Which of these should I go for? Seems like the $300 one is a much better deal unless there's something i'm missing?
>>
>>60191799
If I were you, I'd go with the 300$ one. Pretty decent for something with a 1600x900 screen, discrete graphics, and an SSD. It's well-specced for the price.
The other one's too pricey for what you get, HDD instead of an SSD, unknown screen resolution though.

IIRC you can, it's just really, really involved.

The real question is why though. You don't see the massive gains in battery life like you would out of a Penryn chip. Modern i5/i7s are already a billion times more energy efficient and sip power at idle.

You're really better off just setting standard power saving tools to cap CPU usage, screen brightness, wifi strength, turn off turbo, etc.

Sup, I'm new to /tpg/. I just came here looking for some advice cause I'm about to replace my shitty hp laptop.

I've got 3 options:
T440 - 300€
T440s - 385€
X260 - 375€

All of these are used, I live in a shitty country so ordering anything online is too expensive.

Which one would you guys recommend?
Feel free to recommend models that I haven't listed, I'll try to see if I can buy them used in my country. Please just keep it below 15.6 inches. I'm looking for something portable and powerful enough to use for work. My current laptop is utter shit and I can only use it for web browsing.

Sure

The reasons I ignored the T440(s):
I have one that I use for work. The touchpad really isn't that good, and 2 USB ports for the 14" size isn't ideal (X260 has 3). I use mine mostly connected to a docking so it's fine, but if you're planning to use it as a portable, it's not ideal

As for the other models, a few things to note:
T420 and X220 don't have USB 3.0 ports (except for the i7 versions)
T430 and X230 have one (if I remember correctly)

For the older models, you may want to look into getting an SSD (X260 should have that as standard)

Good luck finding your next machine, anon
>>
My T530 arrives either today or tomorrow by night.
The seller said that there are no BIOS passwords or Computrace, so, what else should I check for? I already know that I should change thermal compound.
>>
>>60194446

You'd be surprised how many end users fuck these things up
>>
>>60194395
Reporting back, I looked for all the models you mentioned.

The T420 and X220 are out of the question cause I couldn't find the i7 version with USB 3.0

I'm gonna stick to the X models cause they seem like the perfect size for me.
I found an X230 for 300€, only 75€ cheaper than the X260

In the end, I think I'll be going with the X260

Thanks for the help anon

how long would the battery on this thing run for?
>>
>>60196144
I spent the last week replacing most parts of my T430 with new ones or with modifications.

My motherboard has no nVidia GPU, but I'm using that mobo's heatsink because it has an extra copper pipe going to an empty space in the chassis, which causes a bit of heat dissipation For Free.

As far as CPU swaps go, it's fairly simply, just takes a little bit to disassemble and swap.

Modded BIOS lets me change thermal throttle settings, but looks like that's not necessary.

>>60196166
Roughly 30% less than the old one if we're comparing CPUs alone, since it's 10W of extra TDP.
