So whats the main difference between Blacks and Reds? I'm trying to figure out what switch I want on my next keyboard
>>
>>60106447
those keycaps would look a whole lot better if it wasn't for those ugly colors.
>>
>>60106526
blacks are heavier then reds. thats all
>>
>>60106526
Reds are lighter, has fewer grams required of actuation force than the blacks. Blacks have a "wholier" sound, a thicker sound. Both are linear, some say that blacks causes fatigue in fingers and hands but i dont actually notice.
I find blacks fantastic, and red shouldn't be very different. If you've got weak fingers you should consider red switches. I chose black merely because of sound and feel. They feel somewhat sturdier.
>>
>>60106526
Reds complain about the names of sports teams and run casinos, blacks run gangs, get shot by cops and star in big dick porn.

why do most people go for different shades of grey and black for their key caps?

some look pretty nice, like the lower one in OP's pic. but most are all the same. and if its not that its pink with light blue. they look so bland like if they were made to only be used for work, which i know most people do use them for that, but they look so devoid of creativity.

not saying mine is any better, but theres too much of the same thing in these threads.

Almost anything RGB is trash.

>>
>>60109145
>colors you dont even need
Why wouldn't you want to change colors every so often? I have rgb strips stuck to the back of my monitor and I never leave it on one color. Its nice to change the mood of the room every so often.
>>
>>60109165
this. also people will justify getting keycaps in various colors but then shit on colored lights. sour grapes much? anyway get white leds if you prefer, coolermaster has them too.
>>
>>60109199
different colored keycaps can look good, colored LEDs can't.

It's like races, sure people with tan skin can look good, but white people who change their skin color to look darker look like shit.
>>
>>60109105

Well, I got to admit Pro L and Pro S are not ricey at all. With replacement keycaps, they look just fine:

http://imgur.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/2F6p0

The original font is an improvement on their star-trek bullshit from the quickfires, but it still looks crappy in my opinion.

This is the best layout for me, wish chinks would rip off the layout so I could get it with black switches. Have a full size board now but I recently started to force myself to touch tip and I need my board more centered to do that. might just grab a chink TKL board with blacks and hope something else comes out that fits my needs.

>going from 80wpm with hunt and peck to 15wpm touch type

not even sure this worth it.
>>
>>60109493

Thanks but, I found that earlier. I know for a fact there's more than just those though.
>>
>>60109505

Yeah it's fucking worth it. You're typing like a grandma, suck it up and learn.
>>
what do you all think about the ducky shine 6?
>>
>>60109505
of course it's worth it and good thing you're realizing how dumb full size boards are. the design was conceived when people weren't using mice
>>
>>60109506
there is

check massdrop, taobao, and other similar sites

most gateron switches come on chink and custom board kits
>>
>>60109517
My grandmother is in her 90s and can do 110ish WPM.

>>60109553
yeah,
>>
Holy shit genuine Cherry stabs are so much better than the chink clones

I didn't think the difference would be this much from how much the sliders wobbled on their own, but assembled it's all perfect and the keys stay near flat instead of angling like crazy, even when you just press the very end down
>>
>>60109505
You can build 96-key boards with that layout, there's supposed to be an AMJ96 group buy soon and then Duck Lightsaver V3 after that.
>>
>>60109668

how do I order this?
>>
>>60109895
found something on ali which listed white switches
>>
>>60110106
China generally refers to "clear" as "white" and "white" as "milk", so they're probably Gateron clears, ultralight linear switches.
>>
>>60106526
Blacks are 60 to 65 grams, depends on who made them. Reds are universally 45 grams. Blacks are generally thockier, although that also depends on the keycaps. If you go for blacks, avoid Cherry blacks like the plague. They are extremely scratchy and unsatisfying. Gareron blacks on the other hand are considered one of the best switches ever because of how smooth they are
>>
>>60110122
I can confirm, Gateron Blacks are amazing while Cherry Blacks are Garbage
>>
>>60110122
>>60110143
Cherry recently replaced the molds for the MX blacks, there's people on GH confirming that they are now the smoothest black switches out there.

>>
>>60111352
sure, if you keep at it
>>
>>60111352
I admire your honesty anon. I learned to touch type at 13 by just using the computer all day.
Check our keybr when you get your wpm up a bit. I use it to kill time when I'm bored. It generates lessons for you and has detailed statistics about your typing.
>>
>>60111352
Try typing club if you're at that level, it's a bit of tedious work but well worth it to help get over the initial learning curve. Once you're done with the lessons move onto typeracer. Remember to focus on accuracy and the speed will come along with it.

Is reteaching myself to touch type really that much better?
I can type without looking down, I don't hunt and peck but I noticed I use my index and middle fingers for letters, the thumb for space and my pinkie for modifiers while my hands float above the keyboard.
This is just how I learned, I have about 85wpm with this janky method.

Obviously just learning to touch type I'm getting much lower but is it actually going to be better?

Most rubber domes are 2kro and people play games just fine, also modifiers don't count towards the limit, and depending on how the matrix is designed certain 3-5 key clusters can register. For example on my model M I can register all keys on the left side, except for S and X.

Browns and reds are the same weight. Gateron browns are indeed pretty nice, as are reds, but I think if I'd get a second tada I'd get browns just for having a keyboard with them.
>>
>>60112050
Browns have such light of a bump it might as well be linear and feels so close to reds it's a redundant switch.

I like blacks and greens and switch back and fourth through out the year
>>
>>60110122
Not necessarily true. New mx blacks are smooth as fuck, but from personal experience, vintage mx blacks are godly smooth.
>>

>>
>>60112329
It's going to take a while for those to consistently be on the market though, stock needs to get used up first. Until then it'll be a gamble.

>>60112412
Also browns?

>>60112320
Gat browns are more pronounced, I can't tell you what they're like for typing yet since I still have to finish the board, but they seem more promising than cherry mx shit.
>>
>>60112050
Gateron browns are fine, its the cherry ones that feel like shit.
>>
cherry browns are shit because they have no bump, not because they're ``scratchy'', that's a fucking meme

smoothness is highly overrated
>>
>>60112427
Cherry blue, red, black, green, brown and Kailh red, blue.

>>

There's not that many offerings with clears and they tend to be more expensive, but I think to say that there are "very few" is a bit of an overstatement. There's plenty of good manufacturers making boards with clears in the common form factors.

>>60112639
They're obviously heavy, but I don't see where you're getting the mushy from. They're about as tactile as cherry gets.
>>
>>60112710
Huh, I guess my knowledge of clears is showing its age. Guess there are several (fairly unattractive) chinkshit boards with MX clears on newegg now. Like 4 years ago it felt like there were no options whatsoever, except maybe for the overpriced CODE keyboard.
>>
>>60112795
I don't know of any chinkshit, unless you get something from memeforce off assdrop, but ducky, vortex and leopold all have offerings with clears last I checked.
>>

Yeah, I didn't either, but check out this top-tier $48 chinkshit: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAZM45N9536&cm_re=cherry_mx_clear_keyboard-_-9SIAAZM45N9536-_-Product

The page claims it has clears, and there are several others around that price range on newegg that also claim to have clears.

The sound of a mechanical keyboard drives me insane. Someone at work has one and I literally just want to throw my monitor over at his desk each day.

I can't even imagine having one at home either, I got my entire system to be as quiet as I can get and to introduce something as loud as a A10 doing strafing runs on Muhammad and friends would just ruin it.
>>
So I wanna replace my 5 year old QPAD-MK50.
I don't give a shit about fluff options like RGB backlights, media buttons or macros. Raw performance for a good price is where it's at.
My shitty country of Sweden has very few options aside from ordering online though.
A few considerations include:
>Mission SG GGK 3.1
>$85

>Corsair K65
>$152

>Logitech G413 Carbon
>$112

What does /mkg/ think? Suggestions?
>>
>>60112961
My entry-level board was a rosewill with MX blacks that cost around $90 back then. I guess you can still get the RK-9000BL, but it would be terrible value these days.

On the other hand, my unicomp model M cost $85 3 years ago and hasn't changed in price, and I'd still consider it a very decent value.

I'd say that, in addition to the larger number of cherry-compatible switches and caps, the greater acessibility of laser cutting over the past couple years has brought about some great DIY case options.
>>
>>60113023

My first board was a cherry mx board 3.0 with browns, with the wrist rest it was 80 bucks. It's funny to think back of how I thought it was absurd to pay seventy bucks for a keyboard back when I bought it. My model m was 120 bucks with shipping, nearly half of that price being the damn shipping, I think the most I spent on a board so far was my shine 4 which I sold recently, with the import costs and shipping and doubleshot translucent pbt caps I got for it, it totals somewhere around 300 bucks.

I haven't tried anything in the direction of laser cutting yet, though I probably will once I get on to making some custom layout. I'm not a massive fan of sandwich-style cases, though alas, I am currently in the process of making one myself.

Now if only GMK sets would be available for a hundred or so I would be a happy man.

Ducky is one of the biggest mech sellers in the world, and are the only ones that have a dedicated nordic store called Ducky Nordic. That way if something goes wrong support channels are right next door. As far as their keyboards go they are verry solid and actually listen to the community and improve. The shine 3 for example was a piece of shit LED problems. The shine 4 used higher quality LEDs similar to corsair, then the shine 5 improved it even further while costing the same. Their new keyboards have steel construction solid polymers and keycaps that are on a whole other level compared to corsair and logitech. Plus they have nifty features like nkro over usb and programmable media keys and macros while having a mimimalistic look.

I've got one, it's pretty sweet but my membrane started fucking up after about 3 years of heavy use. (The 5 key and occasionally 'b' or something close don't register consistently). This seems to be a pretty rare occurrence, so it's kind of annoying that it happened to me. Fortunately, you can buy a new membrane for $10, but I haven't gotten around to doing that yet.

Anyway, that's my one complaint about it. Otherwise, it was great to type on and it's still clicky, heavy, and has nice caps. I'd buy a new unicomp over an old model M caked with cat hair and cigarette ash any day.

This really isn't the case. The build quality, apart from the weight, is fairly sub-par compared to modern mechanical keyboards. You can easily get something fullsize with an aluminum case for the same price. (I'd still say the unicomp's a good deal, but even I'd admit the case wasn't anything special). Not that it matters much since keyboard problems basically never stem from the case. If you're getting a model M, you should be buying it knowing full well that you're getting something for typing, not aesthetics or fancy features.
>>
>>60114754
For sure, but I haven't used many other switch types for nearly as long. I like it more than MX blues and definitely more than MX browns. I'm working on building an MX clear board, but I bet I'll like it more than clears, too (the main reason I'm getting clears is because I want something fairly stiff and tactile that can still take MX caps/accessories).

although keycap customization is nice, a mx tactile switch keyboard just aren't very good at producing tactile feedback im afraid.

im this fag >>60114317 i recommend magicforce with gateron red or gateron clear (same as mine) for long session rpg gaymen, although light linear switches are great for fast-paced competitive games and FPS in general too (i.e. CSGO, OW, osu!, Subnautica, Minecraft, etc.)
>emulators
you really should use a controller for old school emulation

Be Aware: Gateron Clear actuates at 30g, not 35g. They can be really really light for some people from the get-go.

Magicforce has a metal body, but the stock keycaps suck. Though it seems like you are going to replace them anyway. The magicforce 82 is my favorite, but the 68 is more readily available. The gateron switches will be smoother then your old black widow.

what's better, MX blues or Gateron Blues, currently have a full keyboard of reds , I got this keyboard for free and I absolutely hate reds but free is free, ive been modding it little by little and I got a switch tester and after I bought new LEDs for it and soldered them in (it had over 30 dead white LEDs and I bought blue chink LEDs and made a stripe pattern) I like blues the best and eventually got bored and soldered in the switches from the switch tester, The different feels for it is very nice (put them on keys commonly pressed like Shift and enter and space etc)

keys aswell (if anyone was interested, although switched the MX blue [space] and Razer Orange [ESC] ) yeah I didn't expect to get those in my switch tester but those chinks are full of surprises, they are also legit Razer so I guess it's cool to have
>>

This is the only acceptable miami keyset. fact
>>
>>60115791
Black or silver? If I get the 68 one, which key cap set should I buy if I'm going with the Miami NPKCs? Because the only options I see, include, 61 keys, 87 keys, and 104 keys. No 68 keys.
>>
>>60115690
>As far as keycaps go all OEM profile ones are automatically shit.
can you elaborate? OEM profile is just taller Cherry profile right? if both are made with same high quality material with same thickness, I can't see why one is better than the other.
>>
>>60115814
Miami would go better with silver. Get the 87 keys, you'll have a few extra keys left over.
>>
>>60115804
Hm not a bad idea, marking important keys with different switches.
>>
>>60115814

preference
>If I get the 68 one, which key cap set should I buy if I'm going with the Miami NPKCs?
you'll end up with extra keycaps but you have to buy the 87 or 104 keys for Magicforce 68
>>
>>60115822
Its not just the height, but also the angle, edges, curves, etc. It doesn't appear in pictures, but there is a huge difference.
>>
>>60115837
thank you, it's also very nice for different feels while typing but it's dulled down alot because of the stabilizers , alot different then the regular keycaps size
>>
>>60115852
>>60115835
All right, thanks guys. Also, which type? I'm browsing the Amazon page (Qisan, I think), and I'm seeing shit like "Brown Switch," "Blue Switch," "Backlit."

Which ones the best for someone like me? Some gaming (RPGs, single player games, browsing the web, etc.), and do the Miami NPKC work with backlight or no?

All keycaps will work with a backlight, but the light won't shine through the center of them. It would be like pic related. As far as switches go I went with cherry blues and I'm enjoying them. They are medium weight switches with a loud click. The tactile feedback on them is okay, but if you don't like how the sound then consider gateron browns. Personally I don't like linear switches, but maybe you do. Since these keyboards are so cheap, and you are ordering from amazon you could buy several then return the ones you don't like.
>>
>>60115981
What are linear switches? Also, I don't mind the sounds of mechanic keyboards. In fact, I actually like them.
>>
>>60115693
>>60114317
Yo, fag-kun, I really like your keyboard. Thanks for answering my questions. What mouse and mouse pad do you use?
>>
>>60115996
Linear switches means there is no tactile feedback. Rubber domes are tactile for comparison. Clicky switches just mean that there is an audible click in addition to the tactile feedback. I'd recommend you walk into a big box store and at least try out the blues, browns, and reds that most of them have. If you think they are too light then consider getting heavier switches. If you think they are too heavy then there are lighter ones.
>>
Just got my FC660C. Hooooly fuck. This is it. I'm done.
>>
>>60115899
>which type?
depends on your budget. the $39.98 ones, labeled as with "Brown Switch", "Blue Switch", etc, are non-back lit and use OUTEMU brand switches. the perimeter of the aluminum top housing is also not shiny in these ones.
the $62.99 ones are what i recommend since they are single colored back-lit, have shiny edges, and use Gateron switches. Gateron makes the smoothest mx linear switches right now. good for gaymen.
not sure about other priced magicforce 68s since i've only bought the two above

Pathetic.
>>
>>60116476
The case is powdercoated in RAL 7021 (matt). It was done by a local company. They also removed the old paint.

The keycaps are blank black from unicomp. (Only available in ansi).
The clickclack is depth black.

Sadly no sunlight here today... so no pics today... I need a lightbox or something like that.

It looks different because it had been powdercoated and the underlying flippers were in different locations you sperg.

Definitely, if you wanted standard layout capacitive buckling spring you should've gotten in on the Model M/F group buy. Basically Model F internals in a standard Model M or Model M SSk case. Hopefully mine should arrive this year.

What's the best? Gateron Brown, Red, or Clear?

What are the differences?
>>
>>60116808
wait, is that the same gb with that has mx stem compatibility?
>>
>>60116320
Blues and greens have resistance that increases just before actuation then sharply decreases after actuation, also they make a clicking noise on actuation
Browns have a slight increase in resistance before actuation and a slight decrease after
Blacks, yellows, reds and clears all have smooth, even resistance all the way down until you hit the bottom
