i did made changes to the software i use recently to have free open source software where it made sense, like switching from cracked winrar to 7zip and xchat to hexchat
but changing navigator is very different, i did try to switch to chromium recently but even after i tried very hard for 40 ~ 50 minutes to get the proprietary codecs that chrome has i just couldn't get it to work
that, and the annoying "wow u dont have api code!!!" that was very annoying. Meanwhile chrome just works out of the box

i could try firefox but i like the chrome design much more

Yes. It doesn't only have to block browser, but it has to block regular system applications. Takes more RAM and CPU compared to just an extension. Plus you can just turn on/off the extension or customize it as you wish, while hosts file is annoying.

To answer your original question, It's kind of like a popup and a logical next step in the story of crazy ad marketing and out of control 3rd (4th, 5th, 6000th party) party bullshit and trying to make the best out of a situation that is probably not even legal when you get down to it but we're not likely to get any kind of leglislation that could deal with it any time soon.
