The NSA doesn't even consider getting any backdoors into Arch linux because they tried and failed to install it (Arch Linux is notoriously complex to install!) so they think nobody else can either. Therefore, in fact, this is the best way to keep NSA off of your PC - to figure out the arcane and overcomplicated process of Arch Linux installation and then you'll be able to say "not today!" to NSA.
I know that that's what I am going to do!

What's missing though? Don't both GNOME and KDE support it? And then you have Sway (i3wm) for i3 users.
>>
>>60036589

From what I've heard, it's still lacking some common and established features. But I'm sure it will get added to the protocol in time.

The problem would be assembling your own environment currently. You can't do that.

Hello /flgt/, I just started really getting into GNU/Linux recently and I'm getting pretty comfortable with the CLI.

What I wanted to know is how one can become a "super user" so to speak.

Also, should I bother with WMs if I'm a beginner or are they best saved for the intermediate-experimental phase?
>>
I'm ricing i3 on arch and I'm using the font awesome package for my workspace names. I'm wondering how I can keep them listed in the right order without having to put a number in front of it. Are there some sort of zero-width chars that I can use to keep them in order, or some other workaround?
>>
>>60038128
>What I wanted to know is how one can become a "super user" so to speak.
Simply log in as root user. If you own the box, you can run "sudo su" and do stuff basically in god mode

>Also, should I bother with WMs if I'm a beginner or are they best saved for the intermediate-experimental phase?
Skill level has nothing to do with it. Just get a WM since they're useful as fuck and because there's a shit ton of software that you will want to use that requires one

Sorry, I should have clarified.

Not superuser in the UNIX sense but superuser in the more colloquial sense as in one who has mastered GNU/Linux

Also i3 or awesome? That's probably a contentious question but I've tried awesome and it seemed over my head.

>>

I'm going to be moving over to Arch because of the more up to date packages and because I like the logo more. The one part I am nervous about is the fact that I have never built a system with Full Disk Encryption and Multiple Drives Under one LVM. I want to build a system that uses all the cool bells and whistles I want is something like in pic related for the partitions.

//I have a
2TB HDD

//And a
250GB HDD

//And a
250GB SSD

I want to all of my disks under one LVM with all the Large parts and the parts that get written to a lot under my 2TB drive. I want my 250GB drive to just put VMs and KVM's in. And then I want all the boot and root parts of my system that can benefit form being on a SSD on my SSD. Im not sure how I would go about encrypting this LVM so I only have to input one password when I bootup.

I looked at
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LVM
and
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Disk_encryption

but there is not info on how to do both any help would be awesome.

Gnu/Linux is just an OS that permits you to run your programs, you does the same shit you do on windows.
A power user might prefer it because of the cli, that have some nice tools to find easily a file, get the files where a string appears, creating small scripts that permits you to do some interesting stuff like renaming a bunch of files following a pattern.
A lot of tools are also great when it comes to programming.
Then again, even if you can use youtube-dl, mpv or ffmpeg on windows, the cli just make it seems better and easier to use.

Then you got a lot of advantages, like a package manager, an OS more secure, a lot of different tools, easy to customize, and it is always a good thing to know how the system work and knowing you can always fix things, mess up with it etc.

Got setup with Arch about two weeks ago. Figured it'd make a nice web-dev environment, as well as a nice learning experience. Learned a lot about Linux so far. But every time I sit down to get work done, I go down a rabbit hole that ends in a pacman pit and wind up learning more about Linux for a few hours. It's been educational, but I've gotta get some fucking work done. Should I just hop over to Debian/Fedora/something else and call it a day, or is this just a temporary liminal space I'll eventually push through?

Stupid names in your package manager but GOAT ideas nonetheless. It is a source based distro, although you can use binaries. As it is based purely in bash you get to do all sort of things with it. You can install and tweak different kernels easily and all.

The only caveat is the names really. Some anons meme about it because they are (((((serious)))) people.

[FIX] BLANK SCREEN ON LID(screen) CLOSE

What is it?
On notebooks, sometimes the screen gets blank and the system unresponsive after closing and opening the lid(screen).

Why happens?
It's a bug on lightlocker(the screen locker), I still don't know exactly where and I'm not super excited to search for it.

How to fix it?
Uninstall lightlocker and install other screen locker. Examples:
xscreensaver(awfully ugly but good)
i3lock(really simple but A E S T H E T I C S with some teaks)

Spread the word.

Source Mage has good things but the use of silly names on its package manager like 'cast' for installing or 'dispel' to uninstall is what make some people aggressive against it.

But it is a good distro though, good ideas, using only bash on the package manager, a lot of options to tweak your system, more detailed than other distros.

just save it as fehwrap or whatever

running fehwrap without any arguments starts feh in thumbnail mode in fullscreen and loads all the images in the directory that you're in
you can hover over an image and press a coresponding number to an action and perform the action
clicking on a thumbnail will execute feh again, this time opening the image that you've clicked on, giving you the same actions (you execute them by pressing a number)
you can cycle throught the images normally

1. problem: you have to be in the directory you called command in order to get the proper path (see action1, %n just prints the filename)
it'd be nice if I could somehow turn a relative path into an absolute one without appending $PWD

2. Boot it

Burn the ISO image or dd a prepared boot image to your USB-key, or set up a TFTP-server to boot via network, and boot into its minimal environment.

I have no idea what this means.

First answer, is this your first time installing GNU/Linux? If that is the case we are going to get reaaaaaally mad here because newfriends trying these difficult distros harm the image of GNU/Linux.

Anyway, that is the second option and means you need any live cd, or live usb to do all the installation. These "live" distros mean a working distro that can you some command line stuff. Check "live cd" on google.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Google, is in fact, NSA/Google, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Google. Google is not an evil corporation unto itself, but rather another corporate component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA PRISM project, Boundless Informant, and vital Bullrun backdoors comprising a full Ministry of Truth as exposed by Snowden.

Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Google”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA, developed by the NSA Project.

There really is a Google, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Google is the search engine, etc: the web apps in the system that direct the user's attention. The search engine is an essential part of an espionage system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete espionage system. Google is normally used in combination with the NSA espionage system: the whole system is basically NSA with Google added, or NSA/Google. All the so-called “Google” website is really the data collection frontend of NSA/Google.

Anon, we care about beginners and that is why we recommend they use easy distros like Ubuntu, Mint, or Linux Lite. Their installation is only point and click.

But i you want to continue with your endeavor we will help you, just keep in mind there is an easier option.

Live cd are CDs or even USBs with a working GNU/Linux in them. You can create them with unetbootin in the case of USBs, or with any CD burning program.

Be sure to check if your system is 64 bit or 32 bit, just to be sure.

Wait hold up, I apologize for snapping.
I was under the impression this was a list of ordered instructions, not multiple options?
I've already got Lubuntu's .iso, and have experimented with running on a VM. But for some reason it just refuses to fully cooperate. Ie, sometimes the mouse interactivity cuts out, I can't properly full screen, and others.
But I DO want Source mage. I'm willing to learn, it's just I'm lost on terminology.
I've got a 64 bit, and how do I "burn"?

So right now the most recent LTS kernel is 4.9, I think. Do we know or have any idea which version will be the next LTS release?
>>
>>60044257
What you are describing seems like a problem of the vm program. More than likely if is virtualbox for what you specifically said.

The live cd or usb can work in a vm too, but if you want to install it on the "real" computer you need a cd burning program if you are going to use a cd or download and use rufus or unetbootin to burn it on a USB/pendrive. I am not sure of which burning software exactly as I don't use windows, but you need a program like you would normally burn a movie to a DVD.

As for terminology http://tuxradar.com/jargon

And for source mage specific http://sourcemage.org/Sorcery/Commands
>>
>>60044337
Okay so I'm currently trying to just install Lubuntu on my machine, so then from there I'll install Sourcemage.
I double click the .iso and I just get a folder full of a bunch of stuff.
Is there some sort of procedure to install that I need to read?

Are there any reasons not to use Fedora?

I have an old pasta that was removed but in my opinion is better.

Anyway you probably know what kind of distro Fedora is. Fast but not rolling releases, fairly strict free-software standards, tends to see its target audience as developers and IT folks, etc. If you know all this and are thinking "that sounds like my kind of distro", then go right ahead, there's no reason not to.

If you can write us down what the screen says, just the error part, you are going to get more help.

I know it sounds cryptic to you, but is helpful to us.

Also, may I advice to download the iso again and check you are using a 64 or 32 bit version correctly.

Also, check if during the installation you can type things normally.

Are you on a VM? Because if you could use the control+alt+F2 or F3 or whatever, installing a nonfree driver from those command lines (tty) would probably be all you need.

Try booting to a command line fro the grub, bootloaders give that option. From what I can tell you are stuck in your graphic server and you need some drivers to install.

How long of using nothing but Linux will it take to get accustomed to it? I'm only on day one of no Windows at all and everything on linux so far has been just an annoyance to get the way I want it to be even though I picked a distro specifically geared towards building it up the way I want it to be. I've got a useable system but it still just feels "off", I've been using Windows as my daily driver since 2013 and before that I used OS X for most of the 2000s and early 10s

if you force yourself to stick with it after probably 2 weeks everything will feel natural. You will still have only scratched the surface. For me though i started with kubuntu and KDE was similar enough but different to windows that I was constantly having to relearn how to do really basic stuff so the first few days felt slow as hell.

Don't do what I did and just try to customise what you have into linux windows edition. A lot fo DE's run things differently and it takes some learning but it's totally worth it.
>>
>>60045401
Very little, mainly image viewing, file sorting, video watching, and using a web browser. and I don't know what you mean by the second part. I'm pretty adverse to change, but there's no easy way back now since I already wiped my Windows drive to make room for anime backups so I don't have a choice.
>>60045423
I just don't know what I should be doing to learn, if that makes sense. I don't think I've customized it into a copy of Windows, although I did go out of my way to make the dock look the same.
>>
>>60045454
Anything in particular that annoys you? Also, which DE are you using? Have you tried different ones?
>>
>>60045454
Not sure which distro you use or which WM you use, those things are a personal choice and as varied as stars in the sky. Try looking at pic of some window managers. Also, try looking at stuff like file managers.
>>
>>60045454
Don't approach it like coursework. Install your distro of choice with whatever DE and just use your computer like you normally would. learning how to do things will come naturally.

Coming from windows I didn't even know what partitions really were. I just new ntfs, exfat and fat32 existed and fat32 was old. I needed an exfat USB so I looked into the program gparted, which lead to me learning about partitions, filesystems and formatting for btrfs and ext-x filesystems. But then gparted doesn't format to exfat so I had to use the terminal, which lead me into learning a bunch of termianl commands for mounting drives and all that stuff. I'd never learn that shit if I just sat down and tried to memorise a bunch fo terminal commands or whatever and you don't NEED to do that anyway since you can always look up things if you get lost.
>>
>>60045487
XFCE, I tried GNOME on a live usb of Antergos and thought it sucked. I used to use Crunchbang to play around with when it was still supported so I've probably spent the most time with openbox. Nothing in particular, I don't think, but it's more of a general unease because unlike Windows everything won't "just werk" and if I want to change something I'll have to do it myself.
>>60045532
I decided to go with Arch because Debian wouldn't recognize my ethernet and I thought it would be better to understand a little more about a Linux system by doing a command line install. Which I like to think I did, albiet not much. I think I'm just nervous about having to learn something new, since unlike today I've had Windows as a backup to boot into if I did want something to work the way I'm used to.
