I've got a Thinkpad T530 with no screen, no OS.
I've got a Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D cable, a VGA cable, an RJ45 cable, power adapter for the T530, and a non-EFI PXE server setup.
There is a password set for the BIOS, and I know the password.

I can't traverse bootup blind to get it to network boot. pls, anyone w/ a Thinkpad T530 willing to guide this blind anon?

T430 Master fucking race.

Add in a $50 SSD, $12 3rd party adapter, and $30 3rd party 94Wh battery.

$200 each (after upgrades) for a laptop that benchmarks within 10% of current gen ULVs and can be tossed off ladders.

Depending on the screen it's got they can be worth quite a bit. 1600x1200 IPS is rare as fuck, most listings I've seen for it on ebay want $300 or more if they know they have it. 1400x1050 IPS is also uncommon and I've seen those go for $150-$250. If it's a 14" or widescreen model, it won't be IPS, and won't be nearly as sought-after or valuable. 1400x1050 14" can still go for a decent price around $100. Anything 1024x768 is <$50 territory. Screen and condition are really the only things that matter for hardware so old.

reposting this from the last thread

just installed 10 LTSB on my T420, when I was loading it up with 7zip the fan wasn't running
I've got all the drivers I can find installed, not sure if I'm missing something
>>
>>59993261
Don't worry, I paid $200 for my first T430 and still had to buy an SSD and new battery. What'd you pay for yours?

Here I'm paying ~$200 total (for each, so $400 for two) for a brand new SSD, Battery, and Power Adapter.

I might flip one for a few bucks, but maybe not since Jewnovo is taking weeks (going on 4 now) to fix my P50s. Gonna be nice to have a well performing beater (or two!) in the meantime.

I just finished installing basic stuff on my x230 (got it for ~$120) any recomendation on some software that will help me keep it in decent condition/battery life ? And is msata SSD worth it (~$25 for 80GB intel one) ?

Hey Thinkfriends, I see some of y'all posting pictures of T420s with QM (quad core) CPUs. Is installing a quad core cpu in a T420 as simple as just doing it, or are there heat and fan issues to take into account?

I'm in the market for a quad core Thinkpad, and right now W520s seem to be my best bet for getting the jist of what I want without having to spend too much in post-purchase-upgrades.

Looking at a:

Thinkpad X201 (3626)
CPU: i5-540M
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 160 GB

How does $190 sounds for such a laptop, it is allegedly a store front model, with a new battery and 6 months warranty.

Hell, /tpg/!

I have a T510 that I purchased used about a year ago. Last night it kept shutting down and now it won't turn on at all because it apparently isn't getting any power from the battery. Libreboot, the lack of battery and wlan card whitelists. The T430 is as easy to repair, has more options for keyboards, has the same tanky build as the T420 (carbon fiber reinforced nylon + magnesium rollcage) and it comes with a 3rd Gen core cpu without libreboot

If you're planning on buying one, unless you're planning on practicing your freetard or want to run a lot of sketchy chink batteries go for the T430

Just got a T420. What's the best way to get my SSD into this while not losing my old data but getting all the proper drivers to work?
>>
>>60002590
transfer your important shit from HDD to flash drive / ext hard drive. or buy an external drive dock.
install SSD
install OS on SSD
transfer shit from step 1 onto SSD (if you're installing SSD alongside HDD, do the following instead of this step)
wipe HDD (with data on some other drive. flash / external)
format HDD into OS
transfer shit onto HDD
if you're running windows, make all your libraries sourced to your D drive, which presumably is your HDD
>>
>>60002590
So you want to take out your SSD from an old PC and put it into the new Thinkpad?

If you run Windows 10 it should install all new drivers itself.
If you want all your shit from a HDD to a SSD there is migration software. No need to format and reinstall.
>>

if you're asking about how to move an OS with all it's shit onto the SSD in one step, I'm not sure that's much of a thing.

i ain't worried. like i said, i either get strong computing power in a weak frame for super cheap, or decent computing power in a strong frame for average.
i don't travel with it, so it can just be a desktop replacement for all I care.
>>

If you really get a 540p though it's really good. Like the 40 series was shit but its still a lot more than 150$

that's exactly my reasoning. not my favorite aesthetic thinkpad, and not the best build quality, but for $150 i could roll dice.

Okay I just checked out the BIOS and there is no easy way to enable network booting but there is something better. You can set your output as your default boot display

Hit F1 to get into your bios you should here beep if your mute isn't on
Left Down Down Down Enter
Now this should get you to the display menu in your bios
For vga: Down Enter
For display port: Down Down Enter
Press F10 Enter to save and exit

If you have trouble getting a display out just try every option after entering the menu until one of them boots up

Just bought some more memory for my Thinkpad T430 (i5 3320m) since it's pretty easy for me to get up to 4GB usage and things start to slow down a lot.

I'm running GNOME, coming from 4GB to 8GB how much improvement can I expect to see? I know that the hd 4000 in the machine uses system memory as well so hopefully my graphics performance goes up a bit.

My elitebook 8470p just came in.
Other than a few scratches on the lid, it's absolutely immaculate.

It looks better than any of my thinkpads for sure, the brushed metal aesthetic looks and feels great.

The touchpad is fantastic, I never expected glass trackpads to feel this good to use, especially with KDE's robust touchpad support.

Both the clit buttons and touchpad buttons are rubberized and super comfy. Doesn't have any diver issues and worked with the SSD I pulled out of my X201 (rip) right away.
Also the boot screen is super fast compared to the thinkpad one, was in GRUB in less than a second.

Runs super cool, even with a riced out firefox full of tabs running 1080p youtube

Screen is great too. As good, if not a little better than my 1600x900 T420.

The BIOS options are MUCH more robust than a standard thinkpad one, and it's much appreciated. You can "sterilize" the HDD from the BIOS for example.

Now for the bad:
Keyboard layout is comply normie tier, and the chicklet keyboard doesn't feel as clicky as the newer thinkpads.

No middle button for click. but I got used to that surprisingly quick.

Overall worth the 150 cuckbucks I paid.
Very impressed, and overall I think it's a better option than the equivalent thinkpad (T420)

Definitely going to buy the 12" version of this and see if it's better than the X220/230.

Is it better (in terms of build quality) than a T400? Absolutely not. T430? Yes.

Hi thinkfriends

Location: US
Price range: $450 max
Size range: 12" to 13"
Performance requirements: Enough for some super duper light 'gaming'. Like, ancient 5 dollar games on steam that run on linux.
Also programming, netflix, general shitposting. Nothing major but I would like to feel like I'm using an up to date machine, not a fucking caveman like I do with my shitty hp mini netbook. (I know, it was my first computer. I was retarded and I hate myself.)

Other requirements: Keyboard needs to be 10/10. I cannot fucking stand shitty laptop keyboards. It'd also be nice to have a good battery life. 5 or 6 hours during normal use. This can be ignored mostly since I'm not a fag and won't be writing a faggy socialism novel at starbucks.

kthx <3

Modify what? A thinkpad or a consumer shitbox?

Also, I have a T61, T420, X200 and X201 (rip), all bought for less than a shit machine like pic related.
The most expensive one was the X201 that I bought 3 years ago for 170, it came with a dock and original power supply as well.
And it survived 3 years of me abusing it for school, it would sometimes be on all day at school, and then stay on all night too. I think the longest uptime was a month or so.

I also scored a basically new X200 for 30 bucks. Like it's so new the spring for the latch is still tight as fuck.

Watching old 4:3 anime on the T61 with the thinklight on is 100% certified comfy.

i was considering upgrading my x301 because the battery is shit, and the CPU is horrible because its dual core. I also think the screen is pretty small. I was looking at the specs of the t420 and x220 which seem nice, but it looks like they only come with dual core? Is the only way to get a thinkpad with a quad core really to buy a 2.5kg+ w series? i want a 15 inch screen on a laptop with a decent quad core CPU, but don't want something that's ridiculously thick or heavy. I picked up an X220 for $15 AU which had pretty much nothing but the case and motherboard. The upside was it was in near-perfect condition.
>Pulled keyboard from T410
>Already had SSD and 8GB RAM
>Went with a TN screen to keep it cheap, $50 off ebay
>Went with chink 6-cell since I didn't need battery life and wanted to keep it light, ~$22
In retrospect I should've gone with the 9 cell just to use it as a handle.
>Hard drive rails and cover plus spares for all of the screws since some were missing was ~$5 from china

It worked out fairly cheap since I already had a lot of stuff for it and the laptop itself was cheap even for something missing so many parts. If I had bought all of it at more ordinary prices I wouldn't have spent much less than the going rate for a complete specimen anyway, so it's probably only worth it if you're able to accumulate decent amounts of cheap spares over time.

Nah, everything was off ebay, it just so happened that it was cheaper that way. The battery and HDD cover were both new from China (battery was shipped from within the country though because lithium) and all of it would probably be much the same prices off aliexpress just with longer shipping. The laptop itself and a lot of my spares came cheaply from a local IT disposal business that does occasional sales to offload broken laptops and other old stuff.

however, switching from paste that was on it my laptop when i bought it to even some cheap cooler master paste dropped my temps about 30c, though that may have been because someone replaced the cpu before selling it and did a super shitty job putting on paste.

Lest you get jewed out of 2000mWh like me >>60011199

Also, what should I do about this anons? I feel like I'm gonna buy the label and he'll give me the run around when it comes to paying for it
>>
>>60014513
>get jewed out of 2000mWh
What's the normal mWh should it be?
For 6 cell T420 battery?
>>
Anon, I have a question.
What are chances there'll be selling batteries for T460s about two years from now on?
I've noticed they are actually removable but aren't considered customer replaceable by Lenovo, so they don't sell them - at least now.
>>
>>60014532
Why would you get a 6 cell? A 9 cell is only a few bucks more and should give you at least an extra hour of battery
>>
>>60014552
Wait, you can't remove the battery on the T460?
>>
>>60014560
Because when I bought it I was told it's 9 cell battery.
>>
>>60014586
Just check the max capacity
>>
>>60014570
T460 has a customer replaceable battery. T460s does not, however, batteries it has aren't actually soldered in.
>>
>>60014091
Isn't that a microSD card reader? If you're trying to connect to mobile networks then the cards are completely different, and most thinkpads already have a slot behind the battery for them anyway. Get whatever the factory WWAN card option for your model was.
>>
>>60014613
>47.52 Wh
It's a 6 cell right?
Is this the normal capacity?
>>
>>60014662
6 cells are generally like 48-52ish Wh, so yeah.
You should get a decent 2-3 hours out of that
>>60014628
Oh, so you just have to unscrew the back to get to it?
I don't see why it wouldn't be offered then, since they sell macbook batteries.
>>
>>60014674
>Oh, so you just have to unscrew the back to get to it?
Eeyup
>I don't see why it wouldn't be offered then, since they sell macbook batteries.
Great to hear. I was concerned about the longevity of the laptop but knowing I'll be able to replace the battery when it'll inevitably wear out is good news.
>>
>>60014656
My bad.
Mine didn't come with one, so I just searched for "SIM card reader mSATA"
This should be the correct one, right?

How do you connect with it?
Do I need special application?
>>
>>60014736
I don't have any first-hand experience with WWAN cards but I assume that that would be fine, though if ideally your laptop would have been a model that originally supported that card just to guarantee compatibility. Just don't forget that you also need antennas for it, assuming you're not just replacing the WLAN card or something.
>>
So the wifi card in my T420 can't detect 5G wireless, which card do I get for it to do so?
Would I have to deal with BIOS whitelists and such?
>>
>>60014813
>Just don't forget that you also need antennas for it
Where do I get those?
Shouldn't be included within the laptop?
>>
>>60015101
They're only included if the laptop came with a WWAN card as far as I know. If you had any then they'd probably be floating around where the mPCIe slot is. They should just be the same as the Wifi ones though so you could always use those I guess. You can also buy them off ebay, just searching for "laptop antenna" gives me results, though of course they might be the wrong length. They also route through around the screen to get a good signal, so if you wanted to retrofit it properly you'd have to take half the laptop apart, hence needing a specific length. Otherwise you could probably just sacrifice on signal strength and run the antennas wherever is convenient if you're lazy, though maybe someone else in this thread will have an easier solution.

Hey tpg! I just got my t420 in the mail. I also purchased a little 64gb SSD to put my OS, Doom 2, and Sublime on. I've never actually installed a SSD before. It's extremely tiny and not in a case! Did I need to buy a case for it to go into? Can someone give me a clue as to how to install it? Can post a pic if needed.

I'm using this video as a comparison, by the way! The SSD I bought is smaller than the RAM stick he installs!

The t460 has a empty m.2 slot, where you can put an ssd, and have 2 effective HD's, without having to substitute your CD-Drive.
