Only needing a few bits to represent your basic character space means that you're saving space. You also avoid dealing with endianess.

Why can't I fucking install Windows 7 on my skylake machine? Tried using the USB patch program from an Anon last thread and still got the same problem "A Required CD/DVD Drive Device Driver is Missing for Windows 7 Installation". I tried to install on a DVD and it stuck at 0% at "Expending Windows files" during the installation and after a while I got the 0x080070017 error. I don't want to switch to 8.1 or 10, 7 is god tier.

Here's my full pc specs:
i7 6700k
msi z270 gaming m7
1080ti
250gb ssd + 2tb hdd

Any suggestion? I might switch to Ubuntu but it has no gaymes and this machine is wayyy too overkill for gnu/linux anyways

Guys how hard would it be to build something that

1.scrapes information off ebay like buyer email address + quantity

2a.Creates login details from the browser Webmin of a server by entering 3 different strings and selecting 1 option from a drop down menu
2b. Downloads a string and a zip file.

3. Create an email from a template, enter in scraped Ebay email address + downloaded string + attach zip file.

4. Once email sent, send email, leave feedback and mark as dispatched in ebay.

I know basic bitch programming but not done it in years so don't really know where to start. How hard and length a project would this though and if I were to do it what languages and programs would I need to be up to speed with?

No. Virus scans don't even write or move anything. Defragmentation isn't so much harmful as it is pointless. Physical location is meaningless to an SSD. What the OS sees is just an abstraction created by the controller.

it might be a bit harder to get a grasp first, but once you know them I feel like I'm much more in control than some clicky UI.
Especially that some don't even give me all the options.
Just yesterday I had to render a video from after effects and it didn't have a CRF option for h264, so I had to export it lossless and run it through ffmpeg afterwards.

Personally I'd rather look up what I can do than having to sift through pages of checkboxes and radiobuttons.

Can this thing be made into a word processing/spreadsheeting/researching machine? Perhaps by installing linux to a flash drive and booting from that?

A fan died in my real PC's power supply, causing it to overheat to the point of shooting sparks out of the back. The PSU and motherboard are fried, possibly the CPU/RAM/GPU as well.
So I'm burrowing a 10 year old Vista PC with these stats so I can survive my 19 credit hour course load this semester.

Thing is, it's so bogged down it hardly runs. It took me over an hour to get it booted up, speccy downloaded, and this post typed up to ask this question.

I want to return the PC as I got it, so I don't want to go deleting a lot of files and uninstalling a lot of applications.

So: Is there a linux distro I could throw on a thumb drive that would let me access university research portals as well as software like Word and Excel so I can get my research done and then just return the PC next month? I'm used to using PCs that wipe themselves between uses, because that's what my uni uses on campus, so having to back up all my work online is no big deal.

Does the computer have multiple hard drives? Maybe you could clean off one of those, format it, and install a secondary OS on there instead of a USB drive.

This can seriously happen to anyone. It's just that people who aren't tech savvy have an extremely higher chance of it happening to them.

If you can teach your aunt an easy way to backup her hard drive every season, it could probably save her a lot of heartache in case some family photos become endangered in the future. Ransomware's only becoming more common, from what I hear.

>do they need special software to access?
No, there's just some authentication in the background. It can bog down the uni computers every now and then, but it never slowed down my home PC.

>that's not much
I've heard 19-25 becomes more common as you approach grad school, but at my current pre-bachelor's level, I know nobody else taking so many hours.

Plus it's all STEM courses, so I'm spending 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week studying nuclear chemistry, electromagnetism, strength of materials, calculus, learning to code, etc while driving an hour a day to get to campus and doing all of my own cooking/cleaning/yard work/etc.

I was handling it all just fine, until my computer exploded. Now my straight As are slipping and I'm faced with the prospect of taking 2 or even 3 Bs if I can't do work in the evenings and on weekends while I'm off-campus.

>>59921905
I'm currently doing all of my online work on-campus, but the uni has pretty limited computer hours. 9 pm is the latest any computer lab on campus is open, and 7:30 is the earliest any are open. I USED to stay up till midnight every night working, so this has cost me 3 hours a day, 15+hours per week I'd rather spend studying.

>Does the computer have multiple hard drives? Maybe you could clean off one of those, format it, and install a secondary OS on there instead of a USB drive.
It does not, but if I can find a spare cable I do have spare HDDs lying around I could plug in, format, and boot from.

I guess I can reframe my question:
Sounds like this PC isn't going to be super useful.
Where could I get recommendations on good laptops for students?
I can probably muster a budget of $1k and a laptop will be better than another desktop, so I can't build my own PC, like I'm used to.
So how do I know what's good when all the review sites are paid shills?
How can I maximize my investment?
(And will I still be able to use my mechanical keyboard with a laptop to spare the laptop some wear and tear?)
>>
>>59922773
Well, modern laptops usually use USB. If it has a parallel port, I imagine it might be using something else, maybe PS/2.
Keep in mind that you won't find a usb plug inside your laptop, you'll still have to solder it yourself.
>>
>>59922874

I meant for me, personally.

A laptop I can take to class or work on in the more secluded library study areas, away from the rows of communal computers, and then still use at home in the evenings and over the weekends, will be better than a traditional desktop that's anchored to my desk at home, sitting unused for 20 hours out of the day during the week.

If I'm going to drop $1k on a computer with my current schedule, I want something mobile. For example, I'm in a study group for one of my physics classes that meets in the classroom 2 hours before class and works until class starts. Most of the rest of the group has a laptop and can work on that while we all work. I don't, and it puts me at a noticeable disadvantage as I sit there and work everything out by hand with a pencil and paper and lug around a massive textbook that cost me $300 used while they have bookmarked pdfs they found for free.

The issue is, again, how to find trustworthy rankings of laptop computers.

At a minimum I need enough processing and memory to do Excel operations with hundreds of data points, juggle 4 Word documents with 10-60 pages each, and have 12+ Chrome tabs open. I don't think a Chromebook can handle all of that.

But an i5 with 8 gigs of ram that could handle all of that costs $400-600. So why not just go in an extra $500 and get something that claims it can run modern games on mid to high settings while I'm at it?

If American, Vocational/Tech school or Community College.
Take one class over the summer at either and see if you like it and can handle the schedule and work. If you can't, nobody will want you for an employee anyhow.

Money's not much of an option, either. Fill out a FAFSA if going to a community college for CIT and if you're poor you can get like $5000 per year towards school that you never have to pay back, plus an additional $3-5k of subsidized loans with no interest until you're 6+ months out of school.

You could easily get an associates, learn python, C++, Java, Javascript, etc in 2 years at a community college for free if you're poor, and for $8k or less if you're not. And they could expose you to cybersecurity, crypto tech, systems administration, etc.

I know a guy making $80k/year running IT for a company of ~400 people off of just an associates degree and about 4 certifications he picked up while he was getting his associates. iirc he got A+ certified, some Cisco networking cert, and two microsoft certs and also had a networking class prior to community college that taught him how to run ethernet cables, wire wall jacks, etc.

I have no qualifications or certs in IT at the moment. I come here to ask for some guidance on where I should start. For example I could start by getting CompTIA/CCNA/Cisco/CEH certifications or start by doing a course in IT at a college or even apply for an apprenticeship (UK).

Lastly, where else would I find answers on this topic?

I know next to nothing about electronics so here is my shitty plan so far:
>attach battery pack with power switch to plastic casing

>wire battery pack to motor
>have there be an open-ended cylindrical shaft at the top of the casing
>put piston in shaft
>attach piston to motor
>have there be an ergonomic grip at the other end for... reasons

It has been years since I upgraded my pc. I'm gonna buy a ryzen cpu and a b350 motherboard. I've heard people having trouble with RAM going over 2400. You can set the memory speed to whatever you want. For example, when I was first testing my Ryzen build (Crosshair VI, G.Skill 3200 CL14), i set the memory to 2400MHz CL15 to install Windows, then tested 2933 CL15, then 3200 CL15, then finally 3200 CL14.

Depends on what you know. Programming is a political subject. People will tell you they know exactly what is the best way to make programs effectively.
It's very non-descriptive to say that you're 'bad at programming'. It's like saying you're bad at math. You can be bad at mental math, algebra, understanding the more abstract concepts. There's not a single "programming" you can be bad at really.

New to sql and need help.

I have tables A and B. A to B has a one-to-many relationship: sometimes there are no B entries containing an A id, sometimes there is one, sometimes several. Every B relates back to one A.

I want to make a table containing A.id, B.id, and B.quantity, where I select all As and only Bs that have the maximum B.quantity for their A. Doing this with just A.id and B.quantity is no problem with the max function, but I don't know how to throw in B.id without selecting all B.id's

The current workaround I'm thinking of is:
SELECT
ST.id, B.id, B.quantity

FROM
(SELECT
A.id, Max(B.quantity) as quantity
FROM
A
left join B on B.id = A.id
GROUP BY
A.id
) as ST
left join B on B.id = ST.id

WHERE
B.quantity = ST.quanitity

This is clunky and inefficient, but so far I haven't found a solution with GROUP BY, HAVING, or max(). Any advice?

can anyone help me get write access to one of my drives? So i've got two internal hdd's. One running peppermint and the other has no os. they are both formatted as ext4.
