hey guys, brand spanking new to android as it currently exists here (had an og motorola droid before switching to iphone for 6 years)

I know this is a weirdly specific setup but its how I've had it on my phone for years so hoping to recreate it in android: Is there any way to have gmail vibrate/make a sound for new emails, have an unread counter on the icon, but not show up in the notifications at all? I want to be minorly notified of emails but don't want them cluttering up the notifications bar, I have enough of that going on with the fb messenger as it is.

>>59874761
My first gen Moto G (bought in early 2014) stopped receiving OS updates after Lollipop, which was nearly 2 years ago. The latest security patch is March 2016, which was over a year ago. I don't trust Pajeet ROMs and I am getting a little worried about how exposed I may be to the myriad of bugs that keep popping up in Android, even if Stagefright is supposedly not an issue. Also, I want to know what LTE feels like. For these reasons, I have justification to buy a new phone even though mine was purchased after 2013.

That being said, support has been pretty good for a budget phone that originally cost me $200 outright and has worked without issue for 3 years. I am just waiting to see what the new Nokia phones look like before I go out and buy something (like the G5, for instance).
>>

>>

>>
>>59875322

>>
>>59873839
You can have a SD820 for €160 or a SD625 for €140, why do you want to lower yourself to a shitty processor?
>>
What should I replace my Note 4 with? I like big screens and microsd card slots.
>>
>>59875491
For me the RAM is not the limiting factor since I don't do anything too demanding. Even got the phone to run Pokémon Go at the height of that particular craze. The lack of expandable storage is painful; 16 GB really is not enough. Even if it had space, it really does not have the processing power for Hi10p video (remind me why we all suddenly had to switch from 8-bit to 10-bit for our Chinese cartoons?)

>>59875614
Theoretically. But in practice... would you trust Pajeets? Even if there is nothing nefarious I don't trust the quality of the code.

Bixby, much better form factor, vastly improved screen, significantly better performance, an actually acceptable amount of on board storage, probably actually properly water resistant, based USB-C. Oh, and free middle of the line VR headset and good earbuds.

Yes, the S8 is the best phone available.

So, a question. Does the second camera on the LG G6 do anything besides take shitty wide angle photos? Does it help with focus or anything?

I jumped on the Chinkphone bandwagon rather early, bought a Redmi 2 at the same time my friend got a Moto G3. He paid 230 Syrupbux and I only paid 150 for mine, so I figured I was being a smart nigger, but a few cost-cutting corners became apparent.

Firstly, despite having the same 1GB of RAM, the G3 was noticeably and consistently smoother out of the box. Flashing the Mi with a custom ROM solved this, but I also had to take time to do that. Another thing, the Motorola was running Lollipop out of the box, but the Xiaomi only had Kitkat and as far as I know, never received any updates. Actually MIUI is kind of shit overall. The camera was noticeably better on the Moto. Over time, my phone kept running into all sorts of issues, although I cannot tell if it was the hardware's fault or the ROM's (SD cards corrupted, random reboots, WiFi signals dropped). Whatever it is the phone has been a bit of a headache whereas again, the G3 has apparently been flawless. I've also had to replace the original battery despite going way easier on it than my friend does on his G3 (I only charge once a day, sometimes once every two days, he recharges his phone two times a day usually).

Overall I am not sure the hassle was worth $80. I'm looking to replace this phone and will not be buying another Xiaomi. Maybe the new Nokias will be good.

Galaxy Note 5? Is that the most recent? I mean, is the G6's regular back facing camera really not as good as that of say the S7? I'd hate to trade in a phone with a great camera but shitty huge bezels for a phone with a better screen and much less bezel yet a shitty, or at least worse, camera... though I know the MP on the G6 is 13, which is one above the S7. So the only way it could really be worse is if maybe it doesn't have as good image processing or something. Does it still shoot fast and non-blurry like the S7?

Zuk Z2 or coolpad cool1 is probably best camera under $200.

>>
>>59884597
Zuk Z2 has manual camera controls so it shouldn't suck too much for static low light shots as long as you have a steady hand. Indoor shots during the day look fine. Some anon in csg posted some snaps last year iirc, if you can be bothered searching through the archives.

Not too sure about the LeEco though. Should be similar or slightly better is my guess.

>>59884567
>for snapchat
Shouldn't be an issue. Obviously the more you spend the better it is. If you get the Samsung you're getting a better screen and camera, but it's pretty much comparable in most other ways. Why not something in between like the ones I listed? None of them are as good as an S7, but they get close for a much lower price.

1+3t would probably be the most recommended because of the custom rom community. There's also Meizu Pro 6 Plus if you want a bigger screen (5.7 inch)

>>
>>59888370
>something that'll last me a couple years at least

Pretty much any phone is designed to last the length of a standard cell contract. But if you mean "a couple" as in more than two years, then good luck. I kept updating my Galaxy S2 on CM, but near the end I just got sick and tired of the increasingly slow and unstable nightlies. The last two years of ownership were a constant annoyance of dropped signals, random reboots and other bugs. The flagship game just isn't worth it. Buy an unlocked budget or midrange phone for $200-$400 and enjoy using it for two years until you've got the next one. It's not worth trying to play the flagship game to "make something last" , these things become obsolete too quickly and aren't modular like, say, a Thinkpad.

So /spg/, I have a Blackberry Priv I got with my parents' company plan when I started university in the fall. I did not really have the choice to buy the phone unlocked, it came from Bell (Canada). I've only recently found out that updates are being held back by my carrier. The April security update arrived weeks ago for factory unlocked phones bought directly from Blackberry, and some research showed that the Marshmallow update was held back by Bell for almost 2 months. I'm worried that my carrier may not even bother with the Nougat update.

So my question is, if I unlock the phone, can I get the updates on the same schedule as the Privs that came unlocked from them factory? And if I move to another carrier after unlocking it, will I continue to get updates?

Holy shit, you can root the Huawei P10 now.

Would have bought it, but the lack of oleophobic coating is really holding me back.

Can you install lineage or do you have to rely on shady ROMs?

It's made by ZTE.
They don't have any official means of unlocking the bootloader

>Also, how come a majority of you /g/eeks are so cheap and/or poor?
It's not that we're cheap perse, we just like price/performance. What's the point of spending 600+ dollars on a flagship phone when we can get a different phone with the same specs and less bloat for half that?
We like technology enough to research and spend accordingly on things we want, unlike normalfags who just get the latest thin mint phone because they saw a commercial for it on VH1.

I played the flagship game exactly once, when I bought an HTC Sensation in September 2011. Piece of shit through and through, only lasted two years before it refused to turn on. Since then I have just moved from one budget Motorola to the next (1st Gen Moto G, 3rd gen Moto G, probably a Nokia 6 or Moto E next) and I've generally been far happier. The phones are more than capable enough and don't cost a stupid amount of money to buy, so I don't have huge expectations and don't feel bad if anything happens to them.
>>
>>59889445
I don't know, it's a new phone, so most probably no support yet.

However rooting the device is the most important step for me, to set up all the privacy stuff, and have full control of what the apps are doing.

>>59889362
To be completly honest I can, there's not much I can do with it besides sell it for a couple of euros

You are right on the money. Cell phones aren't supposed to last longer than the contract itself. Of course you can root it and install a custom rom to continue updates, but like you said, it's an annoyance. Also, I might add that you need to change your battery after two years since it will only hold 25% of a charge and applications will continue to use more and more memory and your phone will slow down. I finally bit the bullet and updated my original moto G 2013 edition to a G5+ (can't wait for it to come in the mail). I had the latest lineage and a new battery, moto G, but applications were becoming unbearably slow and cell service was dropping randomly.

Question /spg/:
My daily driver died on me and I got left with an LG spirit (h440n) that I got for free. Thing is, it has LG's own craptier rom on it. Came with lollipop originally. Got the OTA for Marshmallow. Ever since then, gestures are a thing of the past (not that I mind much tho), and animations no longer exist when opening apps or returning to the homescreen etc. Between that and the subjectively horrid notification shade, I decided I might as well rice the bitch since I found no custom or stock roms for it. Suggest ricing options that won't make it entirely useless or point me towards a stock 6.1. or 7.something for it please!

What the fuck? I remember the prices being closer to 700$ for a PS3 day 1 and I specifically remember the "700$ bluray player" meme being sort of big.

Was that it? I honestly don't remember. I can only remember things vividly for about 2 years, anything after that is always a blur with certain strong memories that shine through.

The original Sensation 4G was very much a flagship. Slightly less capable than the Galaxy S2 but miles ahead of most phones in 2011.

FUGGG :D :D :D!!! Looking on xda (is that a reliable website, btw?) I discovered that apparently the only Lineage OS build available for my phone is an unofficial, still quite buggy one. So, what do I do now? Do I stay with MIUI 8.1.10.0.0 until there is an official one? Or do I install stock android or the ROM from xiaomieu? How do I reduce the botnet as much as possible? The only Google apps I need are Google Play and maybe Gmail.

My lg g3 is beginning to developed some sort of yellowed out pixel range on the left hand side of the screen right where your letters would start on the reply entry box.
Is it time to upgrade, or should I just replace my screen? It's easy, I have the tools.

>$250-400 range
>decent ROM support
>don't need shiny flashy shit
>utilitarian features would be neat
>NO chinkphones

I've viewed the LG G5 but it doesn't seem to be enough of an upgrade to warrant the cost. I would love a carrier that doesn't charge me $85 a month for 2gb though. Fuck Verizon.

Slowly getting there...

Could somebody please tell me how to set my home screen background as my LOCK screen background as well?

Should be fairly simple, but I still haven't figured it after almost an hour...

It will probably be official soon. Never trust people on xda that are reporting bugs, most of them are grade A fucking morons that don't know what they are doing.

Budget is upwards to 400$ but would prefer something in the 200-300 range.

Why would you want a Jap phone? They're known for their feature phone which you can't use most functionalities outside Japan anyways

Nice, thank you very much m8! I will check it out now. Btw, if it will become official will I be able to update it without flashing the phone, like I would be with the stock one?

Because I'm curious what smartphones they have since
1. know for a fact that most of their shit is not sold overseas/anywhere else. Sony being the only exception I guess
2. tired of the slew of Korean droids (LG and Samsung)
3. Chinkshit-wise I probably can't afford a Mi Mix and the others are not as appealing (feel free to change my mind)

Used their feature phones, and those ain't bad either , but I want one with a decent camera.
