>>
>>59857149
If it's the one pictured, then yes. That one is not minty ENOUGH to be worth $400. If it's a linen dialed 5740C and even the hands are in great shape, then yes, $400 is reasonable, but it has to be in A++ condition.

What's the opinion on the poljot 3133 movement? I want a Strela and the movement seems to have a lot of history (movement used by cosmonaut watches).

But I look at it inside cases and there just seems to be a lot of wasted space because it's not so flat. Strela cases are 1.5 cm and that's still not automatic...

It's totally possible just like 18000bph chronometers are possible.

Also they're perfectly reliable out of the factory, I just don't trust them to last as long (forty, fifty, seventy years or more) as a normal thickness mechanical. Where there's wear and tear, past shocks or even sloppy service a normal thickness mechanical will run not so good, where a thin one might not run at all.

You mean 90% of watch parts used in "affordable luxury" 50.01% Swiss shitters marketed to plebs like you are made in China.

Rolex doesn't make any parts in China. Neither do the Swiss haute horlogerie brands. Neither does Nomos. Not Grand Seiko. It's the modern marketing driven brand whoring "PRESTIGE" driven brands that outsource as much as legally allowed because they don't give a fuck about watchmaking, they see the physical goods merely as a totem to carry the marketing messages.

>Find 1 one (uno) piece of evidence to suggest that Rolex

As we have seen, to be Swiss, a watch must use a Swiss movement. According to Section 2 OSM, a movement is considered to be Swiss if:

it has been assembled in Switzerland;
it has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland; and
the components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly.
If the movement fulfills these conditions, but the watch is not assembled in Switzerland, the "Swiss" indication may be affixed to one of the components of the movement. On the outside of the watch, may then only appear the "mouvement suisse" or "Swiss movement" indication. Section 3 § 3 OSM requires that the word "movement" appear in full, and be written in the same type-face, of identical size and colour, as the word "Swiss".

Changes to Swiss laws which were lobbied for by the hucksters at the Swatch Group are not evidence of what Rolex does or does not do in their manufacturing process.

Again, find me a SINGLE piece of direct evidence that Rolex outsources the production of any parts used in their watches outside of Switzerland.

These laws were in place before Swatch group ever existed. Swatch actually pushed for it to be 50% instead of the already existing 40% pushed for by Rolex.
>>
>>59858857
Prove both of those assertions.
>>
>>59858857
By the way, seeing as Rolex has their own steel and gold foundries in Switzerland, you would be required to argue and provide evidence for the metals being smelted in Switzerland and then shipped elsewhere for any other process, which would of course be self evidently ABSURD, so you might as well just stop now before you embarrass yourself any further.

Hans Wilsdorf, the gay founder of Rolex died in 1960; since then, the trust has owned and run the company.

Rolex SA is owned by the private Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, which is registered as a charity and does not pay corporate income taxes.

There is no person or persons who 'profit' from higher sales, since no person owns shares of the corporation.

Hans Wilsdorf began creating Rolex watches in the early 1900s along with his lover and business partner, Alfred James Davis. Rolex became a registered brand name in Europe in 1912. In 1920, Wilsdorf bought out Davis' share in the company and continued making improvements to the quality watches. After the death of his wife in 1944 and with no heirs, Wilsdorf wanted to ensure the company continued to run as he dictated, which prompted him to create the trust.

Its important to note that the Foundation's trustees are not owners or shareholders, they are only custodians, like the board of a nonproft. They decide how to reinvest the profit, hire or fire the Rolex director, and so on. As trustees, they may get a free watch from time to time, but they are not owners and don't benefit financially.

So in a way, Rolex, a globally successful company which generates 4 billion in sales annually, belongs to nobody! Nobody uses this money. How many billions has it hoarded over the years is a mystery as neither the Rolex comapny's or the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation's accounts are public.

I assume the cash in the bank is minimal. They probably give a big chunk to charity (after all they can't keep it as profit as no one "owns" Rolex) and the rest they pour into research and development.

That Hipster Jew at Hodinkee got the amazing privilege to tour the Rolex factories and (beyond their being a surprising amount of handmade aspects of all Rolex watches) the amount of effort they put into literally every aspect of their watches is astonishing. They're like the anti-Swatch.

Fiduciary duty. While Rolex is held by a non-profit trust and donates at least some significant portion of its profits, the directors of that trust are still obligated to act to maximize the trust's returns.

That being said, the graph you posted is partially misleading as there have been significant technological and manufacturing quality improvements to the Submariner over the time period charted that would mitigate SOME (but obviously nowhere near ALL) of the increase in price over inflation. A 1957 Sub did not have a case made of 904L steel, did not have a solid-link solid end-link bracelet with a milled clasp, did not have a ceramic bezel, etc.

wait until the second hand approaches zero, turn the crown backwards, and then maintain a slight backward pressure on the crown. this will most likely hold the second hand in place. just after the top of the minute on your reference clock, let go of the crown and the second hand should begin to move again. set the time by advancing just beyond the correct time, and then turn it backwards to the correct time as the second hand passes zero again.

with a little bit of practice you can set a non-hacking movement to within a second or two of the reference clock and the process should take only two or three minutes. i can easily set my 7s26 and vostok movements much more precisely than they can actually keep time using this approach. this is called "back-hacking" and it is not harmful for the movement.

next time, however, you will surely buy a watch with a hacking movement.
>>
How hard is it to build your own watch? Everything is just so overpriced. Movements cost a few dozen dollars and people just slap on a case and suddenly it's $200.
>>

A phone's auto focus is typically not going to pick up small lume dots amid pitch black, this is obvious by the blurriness, and without a subject in the frame it has no reference to increase its exposure beyond its default whereas your eyes automatically adjust making the lume appear brighter to you than the to the camera. So yes, learn how exposure works.

Fun fact: if I try to buy this in the EU I wont pay less than 230€, either from Italy of Germany or from my local watch shops (they go as high as 350€, not even kidding). But if I order it online from lets say, Longislandwatches, Skywatches or else, I pay $200 for the watch and about $60 in VAT and customs tax - which is in any way maybe even €150 cheaper than buying from local dealers. Whats up with the price inflation in the EU?
>>
>>59868836
Thanks man, I don't know why but I just love the face of that watch.
>>
>>59868978
Americans never include VAT in the price points for things since they differ from state to state so their prices always look cheaper than they are.
>>
>>59869017
But that doesnt explain the hebraic behavior of local watch dealers in the EU. €350 is a normal price for skx007k if you want to buy from local watchmakers watchdealers in my country
>>
>>59869090
Are you honestly asking why running a shop with authorised products, guarantees for refunds/quality etc is more expensive than a grey market online only business where you can get away with a lot more?
>>
>>59869157
yeah I know, I can understand the safety factor that it has, but the hyperinflation is just bizzare. More like stopped making. They already had the 4s15 and we're using it, but then they decided the 4s15 was too high end and moved it to Credor.
>>
Would this strap pair well with a dress watch or is it too vintage/rustic/whatever?
>>
>>59870732
Casual straps are usually fine on dress watches if you're not actually wearing them formally
>>
>>59870732
It's more casual looking if that's what you want. Usually you'd have a stitched croc strap (or similar) for dress watches.
>>
>>59870871
>>59870899
Damn, croc strikes me as so tacky and ostentatious, especially when it's mostly just simulated grain cow leather.

I know that, I just don't know what to look for specifically or where to buy one at a reasonable price and avoid an excessive mark-up. Can you recommend anything or post a decent example?

The new cocktail presage is supposed to have a better designed crown right?
Will the price increase that much? I want a cocktail but not sure if I should wait or just get one now.

Hadley Roma for $20-30
Hirsch for $40-50

Both the best at their price points
>>
>>59871270
seems like what they offer is just junk "genuine leather" with some filler, am I missing something? I don't see a lot of high-quality leather specified there

I can spend a little more if it means getting something legit and not laminated styrofoam
>>
>>59871200
Yes
>>
>>59871281
You are correct. Hadley Roma, Hirsch, Rios1931 and the rest mostly make styrofoam garbage "genuine leather" straps.

For non-dressy leather at a reasonable price I would look at the handmade leather straps at Watch Gecko and from ColaReb. I don't have any dressy leather strap recommendations at that price point at the moment, unfortunately.
>>
>>59871200
Lawyeranon has at least two.
If it's worthy of his collection, I'd say yes. Get it.
>>
>>59871322
Thanks for the info, I'm happy to spend a little more on a dress watch strap—I guess I just need to shop around and determine how to avoid paying an exorbitant markup. It seems like there are decent straps in the $100 range, although there is no single popular model or search term, so it's tough to get a bead on it.

Do you think this is garbage, btw? I've come across a few posts on r*ddit about them and they claim that they're good, cheap straps, but it's tough to get a straight answer from people who are biased and looking to rationalize their purchases

http://vietnambeautiful.com/black-genuine-alligatorcrocodile-leather-skin-watch-strap-band-20mm-c20-p859.html

Don't necessarily want to buy from this site, but for some reason there seem to be a lot of cheap croc straps from Vietnam

>>
>>59871371
I actually have one on order. From what I've been led to believe they are great quality for the price. I believe there is a large alligator farming industry in Vietnam and that's why they have such a cottage industry in alligator straps.
>>
>>59871396
>Wrong hobby
Everything has a market price range and choosing to aim for the lower end of it is simply sensible

You should have recommended one to me, some of them look pretty nice
>each listings pics of the actual individual strap
Vietnam > China confirmed
>>
>>59871414
Indeed, I should have. Didn't occur to me until you mentioned it because I was trying to think of dressy plain leather straps rather than alligator/croc.
>>
>>59871453
I appreciate your advice. Do you or anyone else ITT happen to know of a cheap dressy watch like the Bambino but in a more classic size, ~35mm? I've been thinking about picking up an old Seamaster DeVille, but I'd honestly prefer something newer/quartz as I don't have much opportunity for a dress watch and I don't want to worry about service etc. for something that will sit in my watch box 360 days out of the year, especially for a vintage from eBay or whatever

anyway thanks

That guy is from a major right-wing party in FInland, btw. He wears a fucking Suunto everywhere, or at least used to, he isn't our prime minister or anything anymore so I don't see him that much. I guess it kinda makes sense, wearing a more expensive Finland-related watch might be a bit much.

This guy was the leader of our leftmost party until pretty recently, he wears a tag hueuer instead. Got some shit for it some years ago but no one really cares (as it should be, being a leftist doesn't mean that you should spend all your money on Marxist literature or something)

The guy in the OP is the leader of a right-wing populist party.

I'd agree if it was something totally outrageous but a basic Carrera, I don't need to see him wearing that to know his high salary as a rep, minister, etc (whatever his job title is at whatever time). He even has the excuse that tags were a pretty big thing in our hiphop/rap subculture at some point, so its like, totally hip and cool and conscious of underground youth culture.

We even have a slang word derived from Tag Heuer - "taagi/taaki", meaning something big or good. (Ie: taagi börsta = a big beer)
It originated from some bouncers at subculture events often having Tag Heuers given to them by their employers.

Here's our current prime minister wearing a Breitling. He is from a "centrist" party, but really, they're pretty bourgeoisie.
>>
>>59871988
