It's cost of living. That salary is considered decent for back water and flyover States generally. Those who disagree just aren't aware of it. If you live in big cities or more affluent areas where cost of living is high, salaries tend to match it. 120k/year for example in the valley by mountain view, California or something would feel normal or even below because everything there is so expensive and people are earning way more than that even.
