This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to produce a fine mechanical watch.

All this crying about "Luxury" watches made in China should make you realise that ALL "luxury" watches are overpriced as fuck and no watch deserves to be over $1,000

You think a "luxury" watch suddenly becomes worth it's astronomical price just because it was touched by some mountain Jew?

Watch makers are outsourcing their manufacturing to china because there's literally no difference in quality.

You're paying for the mystique of a swiss man touching your watch thanks to successful advertising.

Why does this keep happening?

Land Rover had changed their entire design and marketing from building vehicles that farmers used for work, to luxury items for rich cunts.

You're even starting to see "luxury" pick up trucks with leather seats.

Hey /wt/, it's my wife and I's first anniversary next month and we are looking into getting a luxury watch to share (budget of $2000 max). I have 6.1inch wrists and she has 6.3 inch wrists. We are currently looking at pic related as it is 36mm which shouldn't look too large on either of our wrists. Two minor problems with your argument:

1) To the extent that non-Chinese companies are able to produce anything better than horrible quality non QC'd garbage in China it is because those companies are sending outside observers and management to watch the Chinese manufacturers like a fucking hawk so they don't cheat them, and doing their own QC to make sure the stuff coming out of the factory isn't complete garbage.

2) To the extent that the Swatch Group does outsource manufacturing to mainland China, this is precisely reflected in their watches being of a laughably bad manufacturing quality and finishing standard for the price. A $4,000 Omega Aqua Terra is noticeably worse dial/case/hands/bracelet quality than a $500 Seiko Brightz (no, I'm not kidding.)
>>
>>59801257
No, moron, the issue is that the mainland Chinese literally don't believe in business ethics. They will lie, cheat, steal and poison you to make an extra $0.02, and will do so without any shame or remorse whatsoever.

The only way to get anything made there that isn't toxic garbage is to impose external monitoring and QC on them.

Except that a Rolex utterly shits all over all those fake "Swiss" marketing driven "brands" that exist to shove ETA movements into chinesium cases and pawn them off on normie suckers at hilarious markups.

There are still a few watchmakers out there who actually care about the quality of the products they make and charge a reasonable price for them. They aren't all or even mainly Swiss, however, as the Swiss industry is basically garbage until you get to Rolex and up pricing.
>>
>>59801723
Rolex are good but that doesn't mean they're not overpriced.

Their prices have risen over inflation despite manufacturing becoming cheaper.

Entry level:
Vostok
Orient
Seiko
MIyota 9015 powered micro-brands

$500 - $1,000:
Seiko
Orient Star (I hate them all aesthetically but the quality is decent)

$1000 - $3000:
Sinn (good tech and fair prices for ebauche powered watches)
Damasko (As above)
Nomos (First new true in-house production watchmaker since the 1970s)
Grand Seiko quartz

$3000 - $7,500:
Nomos DUW 3001 and 4401 powered models
Grand Seiko mechanical
Rolex
Jaeger LeCoultre entry level models
Omega Speedmaster Professional (and ONLY this model)
Zenith (buy used to avoid the vicious depreciation and don't buy an ugly one)

$7,500+
Girard Perregaux
Jaeger LeCoultre
Piaget
A. Lange & Sohne
Vacheron Constantin
Patek Phillipe

That's just off the top of my head and I'm sure there are some omissions. A few here who hate Nomos' aesthetics will bitch about their inclusion but that's an argument of aesthetic preference rather than quality and horological merit.

"A Seiko" could be anything from an Astronomical Observatory Chronometer worth $20,000 to a Seiko 5 worth $0.02

It would depend on which Seiko it was. Seiko made a lot of GREAT watches in the late 1960s and into the 1970s
>>
>>59801908
Sad!
>>
>>59801940
I dunno but $1,000+ is far too much for watches as boring and ugly as Sinn watches.

Most of them have fucking painted dials.
>>
>>59801966
The quality of the printing on those dials doesn't really show from pictures but is quite noticeable in person. I was really impressed by an 856 I handled up close.
>>
>>59802008
The point I was making is that a $1,000 watch shouldn't have a printed dial.

Come on even $20 chinese shitters have applied markers.
>>
>>59802022
Do you understand why Damasko and Sinn have printed dials? It's not because its cheaper to make, you know. It's because Sinn watches are based on the bold and easy to read dials used on airplane cockpit instrument clocks. Damasko started off as a parts maker for Sinn that branched out into making watches in the same genre. That whole genre of watches necessarily uses printed dials.

Please tell me you are a troll and not clinically retarded.

Western manufacturing has died becuase of environmental regulations and labor unions driving the prices up to manufacture in the west

China has zero fucks given for the environment and zero fucks given for laborers. QC is non existent too. Therefore they can manufacture goods for pennies on the dollar compared to the west when you literally don't give a shit. Until someone calls out China and India on this shit this is the shoddy quality of goods we will have to deal with. If and when they have to join the rest of the world and manufacture responsibly this is what we get.

Is it right or wrong to say hurr muh mountain jews? Depends on what you are talking about. Most Tissots are not worth of being called Swiss made these days. I don't think the quality is lacking in higher end stuff.

Older ones are generally base ETA shitters for terrible prices. Newer ones use the co-axial escapement which sounds good in theory but Omega won't sell parts to anyone and the movements will eat themselves up and be obliterated if they don't get regular, precise services.

The Speedmaster Professional is the only really good watch they have as NASA won't allow them to fuck it up.

I would keep it and wear it when I visited them. Then after they die I would wear it on their birthdays to remember how they were thoughtful enough to show interest in my hobby, however misguided.

Dad told me a story once.

He's a CNC machine operator, and the owner of his factory owned a factory in Britain and in China. He was losing money and had to decide which factory to close.

Even though it was much cheaper he closed the Chinese factory because the Chinese machinists were unable to operate the machines at the same speed as the British workers.

Jaxa case wrench, case knife, spring hand puller, jeweler screwdriver, tweezers, and movement holder is what I'd recommend. Bic pen cartridge end makes for a hand setter. All very cheap.

I had to paint the seconds hand which is obscenely difficult to get right with the paint I have. The hour hand is also not the correct size so I had to gently crimp it into a literally .1mm smaller diameter. The rest is straightforward knowing what to take apart and where.

Nobody said that.

External QC changes a lot.

The big issue is when Chinese production is based on stolen technology and know-how. The bigger issue is when financial success is based on brazen counterfeiting, safe in the knowledge that it is close to impossible for foreigners to effectively enforce intellectual property rights in China. And even if you get one success the same group reappears elsewhere within days, merrily continuing.

Why did you think there is an exodus of foreign companies heading instead to Vietnam?

Super cheap, they're pretty much disposable. The steel bracelet makes the plastic case really obvious. The small size makes them very convenient.

>>
>>59813288
Not him, but I would recommend one. They're usually about $10, they're durable and the battery will last close to a decade. Even if it gets beat up, water damaged, lost or stolen, they're only $10 so you never really worry too much about it as you're wearing it.

Not to mention they keep time more accurately than most watches available.

They're worth ~$10. Not worth it for the ones that get to $15 or more, Casio makes ones with better functions at that price.

What's the best all purpose watch?

I hate the idea of having two or more watches for different ocassions. Too much commitment.

Is sarb ok? I'm a salaryman so I usually wear shirt and tie so a diver would look out of place.
>>
>>59812287
Very tidy.

I wish more watches were like this. Hard to be sure but I am not sure the hands are lumed.

A slight minus for lack of crown guard.

I'm thinking of picking up an 80' oysterdate.
Looks like pic related.
The only problem is, it's handwinding and has a screw down crown.
Winding it everyday must be a bitch.
Should I?
The dial is absolutely fantastic. Sort of like pearly sunburst.

There's the world time or calculator watches, as well as just the more modern basic models.

Depending on the model, it could come with better water resistance, battery, lighting, time zones, perpetual calendar, and multiple alarms.

This applies to all watches. Even titanium divers will have stuff like steel springbars and bracelet pins.
