Anon with a broken X220 screen lid from a couple threads ago here.

I tried glue, left it for a day like the glue instructions say, now I tried opening the lid "normally" without being particularly careful or gentle and immediately the glued joint snapped. So looks like I'll have to replace the entire lid cover.

What are the options for a UK-fag to get a cheap part? It's literally a piece of plastic and goes on ebay for 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of an entire laptop. Are there other outlets where I can hunt around?

Then there's this guy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/222411885440, which is 8 times cheaper than literally everything else. With shipping it's still over 2x cheaper, but the huge price difference between that and every other listing makes me wary. Any advice? This lid is driving me nuts.
>>
>>59801019
that listing is a skin for the lid cover, not the lid cover itself

Apparently I am unable to read. Thanks anon.

So does that mean I will have to shell out £40 to get a proper sturdy lid that doesn't flex for miles whenever I open it?
Surely there are some options. Is it possible to purchase the part from Lenovo or something?
>>

How long can you even upgrade the CPUs? What's the point in going for specifically for a socketed CPU when you can only upgrade once? Unless I'm wrong of course, I don't think you can just keep upgrading it.

They're expensive as believe it or not they are actually made from a soft touch coated magnesium. Try have a look on the Chinese market like on aliexpress i've found cheap new parts on there.

>>59801110
its not really worth upgrading the cpu unless you are going from a dual to quad core and are taking advantage of the extra threads.
>>
>>59801110
you can always drop a quadcore i7 which should be as fast as any modern mobile i7in single threaded applications and much faster in multi, and might compete with some i5s.

I guess, so its more of a revival of an older machine more than a continuous upgrade path. Even a T430's CPU isn't bad right now, so this would ensure some future proofing. What about BIOS issues and shit like graphics drivers and whatnot for the iGPU?
>>

I heard they were flimsy and generally pretty shit. Its too thin to give a satisfying THUNK of a keystroke, flexes and its just generally shit.

You may be required to return the defective part that is replaced by the CRU. When return is required:
Return instructions, a prepaid shipping label, and a container will be included with the replacement CRU; and
You may be charged for the replacement CRU if Lenovo does not receive the defective part within thirty (30) days of your receipt of the replacement CRU. See your Lenovo Limited Warranty documentation for full details

Heck. Alrighty, I'll check there.

In the meantime, anyone have hardware advice on other possible solutions? I know some of you probably hate me and my lid by now, but I want to try out various options to see if something works before committing on completely replacing the part. Would something like epoxy hold better? Or can I DIY some sort of solution to stick the two bits together?

In pic related you can clearly see the gray nub next to the red cable, showing the break area in the vertical black bit that is supposed to connect the top and main parts of the cover lid.

At this point since, if I fail, I'm going to be replacing the part anyway, I'm game for almost any modification.

Option 1: buy RAM
>have to pay

Option 2: jew Lenovo
>will likely get it for free
>there's a chance they'll require it back, in which case you don't send it and pay

In other words:
>always pay
vs
>probably don't pay

The only downsides to the second option can happen if you find some super-cheap deal elsewhere, or Lenovo is a huge jew that will overcharge you just because they can. Cheap RAM is likely to also be crappy RAM, so the only thin you really have to worry about is Lenovo telling you that your replacement ram is actually worth double market value because they said so and asking you to pay up.
>>
>>59801705
If they get suspicious don't answer them and buy RAM.

Never. Seriously. It was just an idea by Lenovo but they'll never do it. Its not needed anyway, when you already have the original thing, the OG ThinkPads, you don't need to wait for Lenovo to sell a 'retro' looking one. Its not even about the looks, it'll probably look similar, but with no structural similarities because those are just too expensive to implement these days.

If by structure you mean simply being solidly built, then the subframe and rest of the chassis shouldn't be too hard to replicate, they already get most of them made to order, it'd just come down to a higher per-unit cost. The biggest problems will be shit like a 4:3 screen and the classic keyboard if they wanted to go with it. I'm not aware of any appropriate 4:3 panels being made, the best would probably be 3:2 or something similar but even then that would be at fairly small sizes.

*30 series have some mild performance advantages (the only one that's actually noticeable is graphics though) and minor shit like USB3, but are a little more expensive. Up to you if you think you'll actually see your money's worth in the price difference.
>>
>>59805161
If you are completely new to ThinkPads, honestly there is really no difference.

A lot of new ThinkPad users will like either keyboard and not care about the layout.
Some will like the T430/X230 having a backlit keyboard.
But i DID notice that the backlit keyboard isn't as great as the standard one. There are some subtle differences, I am too used to the texture on nonbacklit thinkpads, the backlit keyboard has a smooth surface and slightly worse key travel because of it.
Which to me, I really don't think is much different than the T420/X220

With this all being said, it really depends on what you just like.

Having used W500, T400, T500, Z-Series and T60p, T61, R61 in all their different form factors... out of them all, I loved the 14" 16:10 R61, something about its slightly thicker base just made it a perfect machine to type on. And this is me trying out alps, NMB and chicony keyboards. I would still prefer the R61.
>>
>>59805849
Only had it a day keep in mind but my first impressions were good. It feels strong and is built like a tank without a doubt. The actual casing in nice too. All the pictures I saw made it look really plasticy but it's not really. The casing feels nice. This thing is maximum comfy. The trackpoint is the best. I was unsure at first but I can't imagine using anything else anymore. I fucking love it. The fact that it's so cheap is also amazing. I jewed myself out of 250 for mine just because I didn't wan to go through too much setting up and shit and I wanted something to replace my macbook air I sold asap. I could have probably gotten one together for 200 looking at all the listings.

As for the cons, there aren't that many... The speakers are shit. They get the job done if you want speakers but they're shit. The computer requires you to become at least mildly technically competent in order to maximize your experience which is good I think but not for everyone. Somepeople just want something they can buy and be done. This isn't really for those types I don't think. I haven't begun researching how to install linux or anything and I still have to clean the fucking thing but I'm real happy.

I have the V.7 in my T520 and it is glorious. TN panel, but with exceptionally good viewing angles for a TN, and very vivid colors (97.5% of AdobeRGB).

I would recommend the gloss version because it has higher contrast ratio, and this panel already runs a little low (700:1, which while not brilliant is pretty respectable for a laptop TN panel).

I'm not sure if I want a t series (15 inch) or x (13.) I'd probably prefer the t in terms of performance, battery and screen size, so I don't have to hunch over while using it on a desk, but I feel like I might have trouble carrying a t420 around, and using buses and trains etc on my lap.

But I'm constantly battling for hard drive space, can I add a second HDD into this laptop?
In the future I'd also like to replace the panel to a 1920x1080 IPS one if possible. ALSO how many memory slots does the t450 support?

So I managed to get a cool set up where:

-My docked X220 is connected to my monitor through DP
-My PC is connected to it through HDMI
-I'm using some USB mechanical switch with a hub so I can easily use KB+Mouse with both systems
-I can switch audio by just plugging my headphones to my monitor if I want X220 audio, and my sound card if I want desktop audio (HDMI audio is trashy, otherwise would have been more convenient)

Now the thing is, I tried both hackintosh and Windows on it, and I can only manage to use the X220 while closed and docked without issues on hackintosh. Why can't Windows 7 detect that you're using an X220 docked and plugged to a monitor, and turn only its own screen off and nothing else?
>>

I've got a 2007 T61..

Its currently got a T7500, 500GB HDD, and 3GB DDR2 ram, and battery dead.

To upgrade it to the best CPU, T9500, 8GB DDR2 RAM, new battery, and a 256GB SSD (850 evo) it'll run $300 or so.

A new dell laptop or something can be $300 if I stick with a ~720p monitor, low memory, but the CPU is faster (i3 7300U), also has HDMI not VGA. But the drive is smaller, the battery is integrated etc.

Thoughts? Should I upgrade it?

Was going to use it mostly for linux (though I'd likely dual boot Windows/Linux just to have the option).

Then just use it for simple projects, or as a media center PC but not sure if it can output 1080p through VGA to a TV with an adapter.
>>
>>59811885
I'd go for the T61. The Dell you mentioned seems like consumer shit which will break after like 1 year.
>>
>>59811957
What do you think is the easiest way for me to output 1080p to a modern style TV from the t61? My TV does have VGA, I just dont know the T61 will do 1080p over it, and if its extended desktop or desktop mirroring.

Also how the hell do I tell what kind of pcmia or cardbus or whatever version I have? Shits confusing as hell.. because I know they have adapters for USB 3.0.

Hey anon, I've been using almost the same laptop for about a year now, except I have 8GB of RAM, 1080p screen and an nVidia 940 MX.

It's just as fast as the day I bought it, and I've had almost 0 problems with it. It's speedy, the keyboard is decent and the trackpad is ok. It's battery life is pretty great too.

However, there are some caveats you should know. First of all, the screen is pretty terrible. Even though the screen I have is 1080p, the colors and viewing angles are terrible, and everything seems washed out. Second of all, for portable use it's a bit bulky. If you're going to be bringing a laptop around, definitely go for <14 inch screens. Finally, $399 really isn't an amazing deal. I bought my laptop for $499 a full year ago, and mine have better specs to boot. I think you'll get better value for your money if you listen to the Thinkpad shills in here.

I have a x201t and a fresh Lenovo 6-cell, I say it lasts about two to three hours.

Mainly it is up to you if you want condition over price. Mine had a cracked hinge that was really no issue and I got it a little less expensively. During my search on ebay for one lots of the cheaper ones had pretty significantly scratched screens if you looked at them closely. There is one small gash on mine that you can't see but you can feel with the pen.

what do you guys reckon about this, I currently have a ux303lb (i7 5500u, gt 940m). I'm thinking of getting a refurbed t420/30 for the following reasons:
-don't like the keyboard on this (use for coding and report writing)
-Don't like the trackpad, it's super resistant to physical clicks and super slippery when it's a slighty warm day and I start to sweat a little
-Don't care for the GPU, don't really game, I can use my 6600k deskop for that if I wanted
-Only 250gb ssd, would like to be able to add a hard drive as well
-Shitty wifi reception (because of metal body???)
-Super reflective screen
-Feels a bit flimsy

I do like though:
-the weight
-backlit keyboard
-cool idle temps

Things I like about about the thinkpad:
-Robust, don't plan on using a case to take it to lectures or anything
-Battery life looks really good especially with the 6 cell, thickness doesn't bother me, more worried about the physical footprint
-Only gonna cost me $200 + $100(ssd & 8gb ram upgrade), I'll likely be able to sell my asus for ~$700
-Expand-ability - if I choose to ditch my desktop as well I can ad an express card gpu (if I need a gpu) and upgrade the cpu to a quad core
-serviceability

Would a t420/30 be a good replacement for this or will i be disappointed with the "downgrade"? is it worth looking at the t440+ instead?

The display's CCFL backlight can be replaced for an LED one for $100, which should hopefully be better.
Not sure what you mean by shit ssd, it has a SATAIII and mSATA slot so you put w/e you want in there.
CCFL backlight is inefficient so that kills a decent portion of the battery life. Review said they used a 32WHr battery, so with the 75WHr battery, hopefully it'll be 4-5hrs wifi browsing, which is pretty damn good.

>>
>>59823152
The color matches well, but it doesn't have all the thinkpad like properties the Note II has.

The Note II, like the Thinkpad, has:
-Plentiful amount of cheap, used Note IIs
-Removable battery
-Easy repair (can replace screen with just a philips screw driver and a guitar pick)
-Support for free software alternatives like Replicant (just like some thinkpads have libreboot/coreboot support)
-Durable
-Has old, but useful features not present in new devices, such as a 3g test port for hooking up larger antennas, or hdmi through micro usb (comparable to the thinkpad's express card slot and ultrabay)
-Superior input method, the stylus (just like the thinkpad has a trackpoint)

The X300 was an accident. I left a bid when I wasn't thinking too hard about it, a few days later I got a notice that I had won the bid. Felt like I had to pay up. I will be picking it up today. Should be fun enough to play around with.

I don't know when the X220 will be here, but I hope it'll be here before easter, but I doubt it. Should be here next week at least.

>X300 was an accident

Largely useless nowadays, but a beautiful machine. I was using mine until a year ago when I realized it was just too slow to get anything done outside of word processing. The build quality is easily the best that Lenovo has ever put out, and matched some of the older IBM machines. I replaced it with an X1 Carbon (3rd gen), and while I like it, it just does not have the same "no - compromise" feel. And the keyboard is noticeably inferior.

If Lenovo just released a Kaby Lake X300 with a 1600x1050 screen, and kept everything else basically the same, I would buy it in about 3 seconds. Brand new.
>>
>>59824714
Aside from the pulse-width modulation when you turn down the brightness, they are basically flawless.

>>59825174
No it was a low bar for sure. But compared to most laptop screens it still stands out, which makes it exceptional in the context of Thinkpads.

I haven't gotten a new thinkpad since now they seem to be half-mac inspired "meh", which XPS is better at.

I really hope they go back full retro like a T61 but with modern ports & CPU.

But there is no confirmation they will go retro right? Some people say maybe later this year because anniversary but idk.
>>
>>59803198

>>
>>59826896

>>
>>59827137

>Some people say maybe later this year because anniversary
and this
>>
>>59827140
They wont go full retro, at most they'll put a 7 row keyboard and thinklight. The survey (which they probably faked themselves) said that customers preferred no dvd drive or ultrabay.
>>
>>59826355
I had an X230 and loved everything about it, but the PWM was a real fucking problem. It gave me serious headaches at low brightness levels, and the reason why is Lenovo uses a stupidly low refresh rate. You can clearly see it through a phone camera viewfinder and anyone who is even a tiny bit sensitive will be able to detect it.

I tried going to an Elitebook 2570p but there were a lot of other aspects about this machine that I don't like and it has not proven to be substantially more reliable than a common consumer laptop. I am tempted to buy a fourth gen X1 Carbon since apparently the display does not suffer from PWM, but I loathe to support a company that thinks this shit is acceptable on "premium" business machines. Lenovo gets away with far too much because people are constantly willing to overlook their bullshit.

>>
>>59827420
>justify things that will cost a lot to make and their objetive public will not buy
That's the most retarded thing I ever read on this site and I browse /pol/ everyday
>>
>>59827447
>cost a lot to make
A 7 row keyboard and thinklight that fit into the same thinkpad that they already produce wont cost alot. And if the public wont buy it does not matter because the majority of lenovo's customers are business and they only care about price/performance ratio.

The only thing that will satisfy me is an exact re-production of a T60 or T420, but a new processor and motherboard. Basically a 51nb T70 but with a new shell and official from lenovo.
>>
>>59827551
>won't cost a lot
No, except that
>you have to pay for R&D for that
>you have to pay increased manufacturing cost
>you probably will end hate it because they should choose between redesign the chassis to fit a larger keyboard or having the seven roy keyboard with smaller keys
>>
I guess someone here have bought one, so how long battery time can I expect from a Chinese 6-/9-cell battery?
>>
>>59827551
