I'm looking for a laptop to replave my sandy bridge laptop. Mainly looking to get a smaller size/weight to take with me everyday to college.
Currently looking at 3 options
1 - second hand x230. Afraid the screen will be too small to be comfortable, but size is GOAT. Perfomance is not that much of an improvement, and battery might be shit. About 300€
2 - Get a Clevo from a local retailer. 14", 1080p, recent hardware. Build quality will be much worse than thinkpad, but it'll be enough i'd say. No clue about battery. About 640€
3 - Buy a new T470. Would have to buy from lenovo directly, would be about 1200€.

leaning towards 2, seems the best compromise of price, new hardware, and decent specs
>>
>>59776301
I got the x230 for college and it's freaking awesome, got a great deal on it. The small screen was never a problem for me.

well, you won't be able to open all of that at once, but it can handle that easy. before i got myself a nice tab manager i was running an ide, discord, spotify, and like 20 or 30 tabs at once, and that is with 4gb ram...

I need advice on which thinkpad is a better option.
Both are a T460p but the problem is the next:
One comes with a i5 6440HQ and in this option I can upgrade it to 8gb RAM crucial and a 275GB crucial.

The last option is with a i7 6820HQ and a 940mx 2GB. but I can't upgrade it to 8gb ram and a SSD because I don't have the money. I have time to the next week. If I choose the i7 one, I would have to upgrade it in my country and it will be very expensive.

Any advice would be of much help

Hello. I've been a Thinkpad owner/ user for two years now, but I only just realized the extent of a hardware feature, I guess.

The mute mutton on this fucking thing, I always thought it was unreliable. It just occurred to me to ask about it in /tpg/ though, so I checked to make sure it wasn't working. Turns out it works, but it only mutes the hardware speakers, and changing volume with the keys unmutes it.

So until now I just thought the mute key never worked, or worked randomly. Turns out as long as I don't adjust the volume with the laptop volume keys, I could unplug my headphones with porn playing at max volume and no noise would play, provided it's hardware muted. Pretty neat m8s...
>>
>>59778136

Isn't that incredibly expensive, especially for older machines with less common parts? Don't get me wrong, I'd do it if I had the cash with a couple of every T4/W5/X2-10-20-30 machine. How common are chink parts leaking into eBay disguised as originals? Is anything shipping from China basically fake?
>>
>>59778148
Agreed. I always use my volume mute button. I'd hate to "upgrade" to a laptop without one. Hell there's even a microphone mute button but I have no idea if it works or not. I've never seen it light up but it could just be a Linux issue.
>>
>>59778177
There are no "fake" parts, just made by different OEMs, there may be a few different LCD models for same Thinkpad, with matte/glossy finish, TN/IPS and so on, but parts like plastic palmrests, lids and magnesium bases are all genuine. The main thing is non-original battery packs, the main concern is uncertain cell manufacturer and capacity and different stickers.
>>
>>59778108

>>59778215

I thought only Lenovo made things for ThinkPads and anything else was a knockoff. I know displays can have different suppliers for the same line of machine but I wouldn't guess it would be the same for body panels and such. What models have you built from parts so far?

I have the t460 and kinda wish I got the 460s. I mainly got the 460 because the ram is easier to upgrade and it has a removable battery. The 460s is lighter and has somewhat better materials and I thought it wasn't worth the 300$ more. But the display is a lot better for the 460s. Really depends on what you want and how much money you want to spend
>>
>>59778330

Not him but, 'outdated' is relative. If send letters a lot and I have a functioning IBM ThinkPad from 1994 that still works and connects to a printer I can still use it to write letters.
>>
>>59778261
Motherboards are designed and manufactured by Wistron corporation, many keyboards in early 2000's were made by Chicony (real thing is there are not so many keyboard switch manufacturers even today, this is why every laptop looks like macbook air knock-off with island-style keys), some case designs for low-end IBM Thinkpads were manufactured by Asus and joint-company with LG for Korean market.
If you take off your laptop and look at molded parts closer, you will see manufacturer stickers, stamps and press-molded labels indicating their origin.
>>
>>59778330
You really don't understand the appeal of ThinkPads. Buying them new is fucking retarded since the gooks overprice them. Businesses buy them in bulk at a discount, and then sell them on secondhand. If you buy newer model thinkpads, this general isn't for you

What's your distro recomendations for T420s? I've tried a few so far, mint, ubuntu, debian, etc. I have Arch on my home PC but not sure if I want it on my laptop.
>>
Rule #1 of /tpg/: don't buy a used Thinkpad, unless you're really poor. They're old, ugly, and don't have dedicated graphics which are essential for most modern work (not only games, the whole GPGPU thingy doesn't work with shitty Intel Graphics). Go for a Macbook Pro if you have the money (or for a refurbished Macbook Air if you want to go cheap-Mac-route, they're like 700$ from Apple and are like new), or check out some HP/ASUS/Dell, you should find something pretty good around 400 $ if you're lucky in the new market. Just avoid Lenovo, they're not to be trusted since they put malware on a BIOS level. Old thinkpads are still ok though as a very cheap option.

Are you guys serious when you talk about Arch? I'd rather use my OS than serve it, some guys at my college were obsessed by setting up Arch since our first year, while I just went with Ubuntu or Debian and only did the little customizations I needed to work properly, and as a result I'm about to graduate while they spent 3 years just making their system usable without actually using it.

Pretty OK when you consider the SSD and RAM. Even if it is just a cheap SSD, that would be about 50-80 dollars by itself, and the RAM would be about the same. A grade would imply that this computer is visually flawless, no dings, no scratches, no worn off coating.

>Even if it is just a cheap SSD, that would be about 50-80 dollars by itself, and the RAM would be about the same.

>>
>>59780257
Fair enough, I've never stuck around for the auctions since I'm usually happy with the initial prices anyway and there's never anything left that I want. Even as it is it's a nuisance to get anything respectable given you have to race a small army of neckbeards to get to things first, I kind of wish they'd just go back to running sales more regularly.
>>

>>
>>59780347
Haha that's the prices new SSDs and 8GB RAM kits go for. Might find a cheap RAM kit on ebay, but you won't find a good new SSD for less than 50 dollars. As a package deal, that laptop seems ok.
>>
>>59780347
Just checked newegg for you. Cheapest 128GB SSD is 45 dollars, cheapest 4GB RAM module is 25 dollars. That laptop has at least 70-95 dollars in upgrades. And it is supposed to be A grade (scratch free, no dents, no marks).
>>
>>59780451

>>
>>59780726
Any one with an ultrabay.
>>
>>59780726
They'll all kind of work- the normal slot would work fine for this, you just wouldn't screw the drives into the caddy, it'd still be a secure fit without them. The problem is that the cover only stays on with a screw. Getting a ultrabay HDD caddy would probably be ideal, it's easy enough to eject and you don't necessarily need screws. Though if you weren't using screws then you might want a spacer to fill the gap in the caddy just prevent the drive sliding in it, even if it's unlikely to happen.
>>
>>59780726
Anything with an Ultrabay like the Ivy and earlier T/W series for tool free swapping
Otherwise, most models are 1 screw access to drive bay though you'll want some spare sleds unless you want to change 4 screws every time

For the latter case, bear in mind that SATA connectors were designed with a limited wear life
>>
>>59780797

>>
>>59780815
If it can boot from the DVD drive, it should be able to boot off a SSD in the same bay.

Hey I posted the tail end of last thread. Anyone ever hack a x220 keyboard onto the x230? I'm gonna do it either way, but was seeing if anyone here had a horror story to tell me before I order the keyboard.

Anyone here had to take their laptop apart and apply some new thermal paste?
I decided to bring my Acer 5755g up to date with Windows 10 and after a fresh reinstall and updates its still idling at 60 degrees+, going as high as 90 under some load.
I had to put a new battery in too since my old one just wouldnt hold any charge at all. (Why I stopped using it in the first place, well except for Windows 8 constantly freezing without a BSOD. So I knew I had to do a reinstall at some point)

I know it used to run hot anyway, but it was never quite this hot.

People that care about warranties. Get a bad stick? just RMA it. You don't get that with ebay. Even if you get a used SSD from ebay, the prices on those can be rather stiff. Either you have one already from an old build, or you get a new one.

Looks like most of the marks on that laptop can be cleaned off. Even if you did find a cheaper x220 on ebay, the prices for a b-grade one is also pretty high, especially when you consider that many of them come without hdds, ram, chargers, or have worn keyboards and chipped off corners. 200 dollars is ok for a complete package, even if it does have a few marks that may or may not be dirt. I can't see any obvious cracks or defects on it.

Could find one cheaper locally, but the selection is worse, and you might have to wait for a long time to get one. Around these parts they're harder to find, and once you find one in good shape, they're sold for about 200 dollars with an i3.

Follow good practice of unmounting the drive of course. It is designed with hot swapping in mind after all. Though I guess if you have something as delicate as an OS, it might hate you for it just because

Just got my first ThinkPad -- an X230! Threw in a 9-cell, an SSD, 16GB of RAM, an IPS display, an AC7260 for WiFi, a new FPR, and a X220 keyboard and palmrest. Also flashed it with coreboot+grub2 payload, because why not.

>>59780861
It's pretty effortless, but you might want to order an X220 palmrest (like I did) if you don't want to file down the nubs on the keyboard. I didn't tape the two pins on the keyboard connector, and it seems to work fine so far too, with no visible damage.

You just have to swap in the keyboard (and optionally, palmrest), compile the modded EC firmware, flash it and you're done.

Is libreboot a meme or does it actually have any advantage over stock, assuming I'm planning on installing Linux once I decide on a distro?

I don't particularly care about the open-sourceness of bioses, but if it's actually more stable or has more customisation or things like that then I'd find it useful.

Thanks.
I guess I'll make the HDD the daily driver, then set the booting order of the DVD drive to be first.
That way it will boot from the caddy first.

In terms of practical advantages, perhaps a faster boot -- a sub-10-second boot from button press to desktop is possible with something like (core/libre)boot and grub2 payload

Are there any Thinkpads that do not use PWM to control the screen brightness?

I bought an X230 as a sort of side-grade from my T500 (still use the former because 1920x1200), mainly use the X230 on the go. But I find whenever I turn down the brightness on the screen, after a little while I get a horrible headache and my eyes really hurt. I looked this up and found a lot of sensitive users have the same issue due to the very low PWM refresh rate. My T500 has no such issue since the backlight is CCFL. So to avoid the strain, I have to keep the X230 on maximum brightness all the time, which hurts battery life and is frankly pointless.

I hear the new X1 Carbon doesn't have this problem, but are there any others aside from ancient models? Why does Lenovo even do this? Is it cheaper than using an LED backlight that dims properly?

exp gdc beast v8.0 is the only one at a reasonable price ($50ish). some people reported stability issues, while most users haven't had any. i wonder how many of those problems might've been caused by odd card/psu/laptop combos rather than the adapter itself. like, a shit atx psu, overpowered card, shitbox laptop with a flaky mpcie port, etc. my exp gdc v8/750 ti/dell da2 psu/x220 works great

I tried converting over to Linux but I still find myself using Windows from time to time. I originally swapped out the 160gb hard drive in my T400 for an SSD, but I am wondering if it is possible to get a hard drive caddy to house the original Windows drive and then select which OS to use on boot (with Linux on the SSD and Windows on the ultrabay)

I know that. My issue is that neither of the drives are really big enough to make partitioning worthwhile (120 GB and 160 GB). I want to keep the existing SSD, which is 100% dedicated to Linux, and add the original hard drive (which still has the Windows 7 installation on it and is sitting in a drawer) in an Ultrabay setup. I am wondering if this can be done seamlessly or if I will need to keep changing the boot order in the BIOS.

I got that to work on a 2007 low-end pink vaio with like a 1GHz pentium or some shit, and no GPU to speak of (I'm not even sure if it came with integrated graphics).

Granted I was limited to 2 chunks draw distance and the framerate would dip if I looked at too many things at once, but point is your X220 should be just fine. Unless you want to run modded, that thing can make my 4660k lag depending on what I'm trying to build.

>CS
GO? Source? Again, some games are older than others.
Since I believe CS:GO uses the Source engine (correct me if I'm wrong), it should probably be fine.

>Rocket league
Ok I have no idea because it's such a small game but it's also relatively new. I never tried it on low-end hardware, so I have literally no idea how well optimised it is. You might need to turn the graphics down for a 460.

>Overwatch
I would highly doubt that, it's a recent game built to be pretty and fancy rather than compatible with 7 year old ultraportable laptops. You might find yourself struggling both on the CPU and GPU end to be honest.
>>
>>59786484
I'm guessing an ebay seller wont be that helpful in 11 months if something stops working. But maybe he's sitting on a pile of replacement parts and will just send over any part you report as broken. Hard to tell if they will honor their warranty, since I doubt you can change your feedback after 11 months.

There might be local businesses that sell off-lease business laptops, but the ones that do that here usually sell laptops like the X220 for 350-400 dollars.
>>
Ok so, I've already decided on a W500 for general use, but what I want now is quite the opposite of a W-series.

I tend to be quite a lot on the road/ away with work so I need something
>tiny, light, something you can throw around
>dirt cheap
>can decently run youtube via chrome on linux
>decent soundboard if possible (main use would be listening to music)
>battery life (so either availability of replacement batteries or hackability of standard ones, I can replace the 18650 cell myself granted there's no problems with the chip making my life hard)
I'm not really interested in any "tablet" capabilities.

Any opinions deebly abbregiated :DDD
>>
>>59786864
Have you considered an mp3 player? An order of magnitude cheaper than almost any laptop, correspondingly smaller and lighter, can get thrown around.

The only downside is that depending on the model, youtube might be awkward or outright impossible. So for this to work you'd need to be able to pre-download your music. If that's not an option, then take a look at the X series - even the X200 should be good enough to play videos in a browser, although I have no idea how good its sound is.
>>
>>59787069
Well that's the thing, I want something like a media player, but, in laptop form. Else I'd have gotten a tablet. Plus you can't really shitpost on 4chan from an mp3 player.
>>
>>59787141
>You can't shitpost on 4chan from an mp3 player
You'd be surprised. I posted a few shitposts from my 3DS of all things.

Anyway, yeah, consider an X200 or so. There are older, smaller models, and you could set up youtube-dl to listen to youtube music without having to load the bloated website, but again sound is probably gonna be shit and it's also more of a hassle. Plus buying a 7 year old (or so) laptop has its risks, now if you go for a 10+ year old laptop you're that much more likely to have various parts of it die on you.

Sup /g/. I was wandering around this board to get ideas for my new laptop (thanks burglars for breaking into my apartment and stealing my Asus X201E: it was shit, but I liked it), when I saw this general's title and I remembered seeing my Orbital Mechanics lecturer, an engineer that I respect a lot, with a ThinkPad, so I stopped by.

After I read the OP I went on ebay and I discovered the T420 and the X220, the ones you suggest, are sold for less than €300, which is insane, since similarly priced new laptops on amazon have shittier specs.

However these ThinkPads are five years old used machines, so I was really wondering what's the deal with ThinkPads.

Is it actually a safe choice to buy used or reconditioned ThinkPads? Also, why suggesting such old machines: wouldn't it be better to spend more and buy newer ones?

Thanks.

oh i see, is it an easy process to flash? I have an x230 already with the keyboard mod and would love to have ac wifi. Btw I highly recommend you isolate those 2 pins on the keyboard as over time it can cause damage. Its not something you'll notice straight away.
>>
>>59788141
it's a little bit of a pain in the ass to flash -- you'll need an SPI flasher and a SOIC-8 clip. I used a Raspberry Pi I had lying about and bought a Pomona 5250 clip, but once you flash the correct bits you'll be able to flash it again from your OS.

You'd have to compile coreboot (might take a few tries to get everything working just the way you want), (optionally) take a backup of your 4MiB BIOS ROM chip and flash the ROM chip with your coreboot image. If you want to be able to flash coreboot from your OS after that, you'd also want to dump your 8MiB IFD/ME/GBE ROM chip and unlock the flash descriptor. I'd recommend that if you want to save yourself the hassle when you change something else in the future.

Anyway, coreboot should generally work fine out of the box, but resume from S3 suspend resulted in the LVDS screen not turning on -- I had to use the VGABIOS binary blob out of my BIOS instead of native graphics init (uncheck Devices > Use native graphics init, then check Devices > Run VGA Option ROMs).

Also, thanks for the heads up about the keyboard, I'll go tape up those pins. A brand new keyboard would only cost me around $22 USD though, so I'm not particularly concerned
>>
>>59787758
That's the entire point of ThinkPads: their build quality is so good that you can comfortably buy used and most of the time it will work great.

Of course as with anything there's a risk that it won't work great, or won't work at all, so it's always worth taking reasonable precautions that would allow you to return the product if faulty (so, for instance, a shady deal on gumtree or something is worth worrying about). Most places offer some sort of buyer protection, though, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

ThinkPads and other business bought laptops bask in the second hand market because the people selling them do not have any sentimental or monetary value towards them. Most places charge the original owners to zero the drives out and remove their 'old' IT equipment.
This is why i5/i7 business laptops are a lot cheaper than their consumer counterparts.
The seller isn't the owner, the difference is that they just want to make profit rather than trying to get as much value from their machine when bought new.

Battery life should be decent, although I'm not sure if you can really underclock Core i CPUs. Maybe with Throttlestop or something.

It's built pretty well, so I guess so

CPU's soldered to the mobo. Bluetooth board is easily removable (just one screw), microphone is on the board with the inward-facing LEDs though so that might be harder. Thermal paste might be a little bit of the pain, but it's still easy to tear the X230 apart so I reckon it's the same with the X220.

I bought a new replacement battery for my thinkpad T61p. I wanted to get a 7800mAh (9 cell) and the one I had was 5200mAh. They are claiming that because of this difference I bought the wrong model. Does the capacity of the battery affect the compatibility? The voltage is the same on each battery at 10.8V.

So..I just replaced the screen on my t420 with the alienware panel (glossy).

It has much nicer colours, the jump in resolution is nice. The viewing angles are better (but still poor). I would recommend it all in all. I have to say that working on the t420 was not as easy as I expected.

All the videos on youtube about it were quite shitty, I ended up referring to the t420 manual which was quite good.

you need a special cable/converter for that? also I heard something weird like it doesnt have screwholes or something like that, it's that true?

Did you need to change to the HD+ cable or something? Otherwise in terms of only the screen replacement it's about as easy as it gets.
>>

Because I had the 768p panel I had to change it from a HD cable to a HD+ cable I got from some chinese seller on ebay.

Had no issues with screwholes, the screen itself was straightforward.

first off is not really an internship, it is a junior enterprise, its a global movement of companies associated with colleges, non-profitable, run entirely by students. they cover various fields, depending on the college. in my case, its administration and what we do is business consulting

yeah nobody gets paid shit (only 4h/day though), but its a hell of a experience, been there for bit more than 1 month and already made a project of business diagnosis, went to meetings with clients and even made a fucking outdoor for our company

bottom line is, my company is not rich, they can't offer notebooks but we have desktops there but they are shitty so few people bring their notebooks

USB-C is basically USB 3.1, so USB 3 but faster. Unless you want to be booting from an external SSD or something, it's basically a meme.

It also has a different connector. Literally get a $5 adapter and you're set. In the long run standardisation of USB-C is nice because the connector is much better than standard USB-A, but that literally has zero bearing on your current laptop purchase.

Second result on amazon, after the exact same thing but the other way around.

They're piss-cheap and super-simple so don't worry much about it. Besides there aren't that many devices which use USB-C male exclusively yet - smartphones have migrated to usb-c female from micro-usb, so more devices are starting to use the male, but you probably won't find yourself in a situation to need this adapter any time soon. For instance, almost all memory sticks which have a usb-c connector also have a traditional usb-a connector.

It replaces the Display Port.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it can also charge over USB-C, and if so that could be a big plus if you share workplaces with others using USB-C charging.

Worth $179 though? I don't know, It depends how rich you are but I would say probably not unless you plan to use it for a very long time.
